Foreword

History is supposed to be a narrative of events, and events are created either by the actions of men or are of interest as affecting and related to men.

The History of Franklin County is a record of what its people have done, and it will be found that ninety per cent of the happenings that are remembered cluster about the memories of a few leaders. Attempts to display the chorus before the footlights and relegate the star to the wings have failed to interest, save as experiments. The reader will not be surprised, therefore, to find in these chronicles much of biography and a minimum treatment of mere annals. In fact, much of this present work would have been impossible but for the fortunate chance that has preserved the data concerning the lives of our prominent citizens of the past. It is confidently believed that the sections of this history exclusively devoted to biographical sketches of leading citizens will prove to be of vital interest and use to the future historian, and to contain much that will not be available elsewhere.

The lexicographers seem to be in practical agreement that history includes comments on and philosophical speculations concerning the facts set forth. It will be observed that the author of this work has not hesitated to add observations to mere recital, and this without apology in the text or elsewhere.

The importance of any event, historically, may vary from time to time. Some of the things that seemed tremendous to the pioneers of Franklinton are but atoms of interest today, shrinking in comparison with the things that have happened since. With every careful revision of a county history there must be a re-valuation of local episodes and a re-arrangement of their treatment. Indeed, this judging of the comparative importance of events constitutes the major labor of the conscientious historian.

HISTORY OF FRANKLIN COUNTY

In the preparation of this history of Franklin County recourse has been had to all previous local histories, and to their authors it is a pleasure to make clue acknowledgment.

Martin's history, published in 1858, is replete with carefully etched pictures of the pioneer days and it will ever remain as the best source from which the student of those times must draw his materials.

Studs is history, published in 1872, supplements but does not supplant this earlier work.

Captain Alfred E. Lee's History of Columbus, published in 1892, will never be surpassed as a mine of information concerning the times of which he writes, but it is entirely too full in detail to warrant its re-publication so that the original must continue indefinitely to increase in value.

The History of the City of Columbus, by Prof. Osman C. Hooper, published in 1920, is entitled to unstinted praise, not only on account of its literary excellence, but because it treats the episodes of Franklin County's life-time in their chronological order, and thus presents a series of faithful views in sequence. Unfortunately the edition printed was in inverse ratio to the merit of the work and any one lucky enough to have a copy now may treasure it with his Elzivers and Caxtons.

Williams' History of Franklin and Pickaway Counties, Col. William Taylor's Centennial History of Columbus and Vesey's History of Franklin County have been consulted often and have yielded many items of interest.

Howe's History of Ohio contains an excellent chapter on Franklin County, all of which, with much additional matter, is preserved in Gal-breath's later history of Ohio.

To Ryan and Randall's History of Ohio the author is indebted for the last word on several disputed points of general interest and, strange as it may seem, for valuable information concerning this county and its people not readily to be found elsewhere. More than a quarter of a century has passed since the publication of this masterly work and now some one of the Ryan and Randall class, if there be any such, can render a great service to the state by publishing a sixth volume, bringing the story of Ohio down to date.

The publications of the Ohio Archaeological and Historical Society contain a vast amount of well presented data concerning Franklin County and its distinguished citizens, and these have been freely consulted. The treasures of this storehouse have been the more readily available through

HISTORY OF FRANKLIN COUNTY

the courtesies of Director H. C. Shetrone, Librarian C. B. Galbreath, Assistant, Miss Mills, and Mr. Harold Simpson, in charge of the library's unique collection of Ohio newspapers.

To Hon. George E. McCormick and Miss Alice Boardman, of the Ohio State Library, sincere thanks are here offered for courtesies freely and efficiently extended.

Appeals for help to individuals have met with quick and sympathetic response. No doubt the list is too long to print here, but there is another reason for its omission—if it were not complete, the slighted ones would never forgive the author and he would not live long enough to forgive himself. However, very special assistance has been received from Mr. John J. Pugh, of the City Library, and from Mr. J. M. Walcutt, whose mathematical memory unfailingly reaches back to the beginning of the passing generation.

The careful reacier may note some omissions. The author has viewed his dramatis personae as the writer of fiction usually looks upon his hero, rather emphasizing his good qualities and neglecting his failings. Some unpleasant incidents have been touched lightly, others calmly overlooked. It is a matter of little importance ; for it is the good deeds of men that live after them, whatever some misguided poet may have said to the contrary.

O. M.
