Following his graduation from the parochial schools of East Liverpool, Neil C. McNicol spent two years at Notre Dame Preparatory School, and four years at Notre Dame University. He then entered business with his father, as secretary-treasurer of the D. E. McNicol Pottery Company, at East Liverpool, and continued in that capacity from 1915 until 1931. At the death of his father, he became vice president of the organization. On Dec. 5, 1931, Mr. McNicol opened the McNicol Firestone Service Station, at East Liverpool, where he handles Texaco products, Firestone tires, batteries, radios, etc. The shop also specializes in repair work of all types.


Mr. McNicol served during the World War as a member of the Infantry School of Arms at Ft. Benning, Columbus, Ga., and at Ft. Sill, Okla. He is a member of the American Legion.


Mr. McNicol is a Republican, a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, and belongs to the Elks Lodge, Buckeye Club, and East Liverpool Country Club. He is unmarried.


Robert E. Hall. —A prominent member of the Columbiana County Bar Association is Robert E. Hall, well known lawyer of Lisbon. He was born at East Liverpool, Dec. 22, 1906, the son of Ernest B. and Carrie (McArtor) Hall.


Ernest B. Hall, who died in 1922, was a native of Ohio. He was born in Washington County and his wife was born

at East Liverpool. She died in 1917. During his early lifo Mr. Hall was interested in general farming but later fol-lowed the trade of potter at East Liverpool for many years. He was a Republican and a member of the Christian Church. The only child born to Mr. and Mrs. Hall was Robert E., the subject of this sketch.


Robert E. Hall was graduated from East Liverpool High School in 1924 and then entered Ohio Northern University, where he received the degrees of A. B. and LL. B. Following his admission to the bar in 1929 he located at Lisbon, where he has an extensive practice. He is a member of the Columbiana County and Ohio State Bar Associations.


On July 16, 1930, Mr. Hall married Miss Thelma Grimm, who was born at Wellsville, Ohio, Aug. 21, 1907, daughter of William H. and Myrtle (Elson) Grimm. Both are natives of Jefferson County, Ohio, and reside at Alliance. Thelma (Grimm) Hall is a graduate of Alliance High School and received the degree of Bachelor of Arts at Mount 'Union College. She also received the degrees of Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Illinois, and before her marriage was a member of the faculty of that institution. She is president of the Columbiana County Parent-Teacher Association, and is also a prominent member of the Order of Eastern Star. Mr. and Mrs. Hall have two sons, Robert Elson, born Feb. 23, 1933, and Gary Ford, born Oct. 27, 1934.


Mr. Hall is a Republican and belongs to the Kiwanis Club, Masonic Lodge, and Delta Theta Phi fraternity.


Harry C. Warrick. —A member of one of the oldest and best known families of Columbiana County, Harry C. Warrick is prominent in the city of Columbiana as a funeral director. He was born at Clarkson, Columbiana County,

July 8, 1884, the son of William Clark and Madora (Altdoerffer) Warrick.


William Clark Warrick, who died Aug. 22, 1920, was a well known funeral director of Columbiana County. He was born at Clarkson, July 22, 1856, the son of Milo War-rick, who in 1836 had established a funeral home at Clarkson. He was also a cabinet maker. His father was Isaac Warrick, also a cabinet maker by trade and a native of Pennsylvania. William Clark succeeded to his father's undertaking business at Clarkson and for many years ranked as the community's most substantial citizen. He was a Democrat, a member of the Presbyterian Church, and belonged to the Masonic Lodge, Knights of Pythias, and Maccabees. It was Milo Warrick who had the distinction of owning the first funeral hearse in Columbiana County. Madora (Altdoerffer) Warrick was a native of Fairfield Township, Columbiana County, born March 31, 1857. She died Dec. 3, 1903, and is buried at Clarkson, Ohio. She taught school before her marriage. She held membership in the Presbyterian Church, and belonged to the Red Cross, Grange, W. C. T. U., Roosevelt Circle, and Ladies Auxiliary of the Grand Army of the Republic. To William Clark and Madora (Altdoerffer) Warrick were born the following children: 1. Elmer J., attorney, lives at Cleveland. 2. Harry C., subject of this sketch. 3. Wilmer A., a World War veteran, connected with the Pennsylvania State Highway Department, at Williamsport, Pa.


The boyhood of Harry C. Warrick was spent at Clarkson, Ohio, and he was educated in the public schools. Following his graduation from East Liverpool High School in 1905 he attended the Pittsburgh School of Embalming, and was graduated from that institution in 1908. He immediately became identified with his father's undertaking business at Clarkson and continued as his partner until the latter's

death in 1920. Harry C. Warrick then operated the establishment for six years, after which he removed to Columbiana and opened his present funeral home. He has one of the finest establishments in the county and is recognized as a reliable funeral director. His cousin, Everett Warrick, has been his assistant since 1925 and he was graduated from the Cincinnati College of Embalming in 1930.


On Aug. 8, 1912, Mr. Warrick was united in marriage with Miss Emily Gaston, born at Clarkson, Feb. 2, 1891, the daughter of John and Esther (Hickman) Gaston. Both are natives of Clarkson, Ohio, and Mr. Gaston now lives at Alliance. His wife died in 1932 and is buried at Clarkson. He was a farmer. Politically, Mr. Gaston has always been a Democrat. To Harry C. and Emily (Gaston) Warrick has been born a daughter, Jane Ellen, born at Clarkson, Jan. 30, 1917. She is a graduate of Lakewood High School, class of 1934.


Mr. Warrick is a Democrat and has served as township clerk and member of the board of education. He and his family are active members of the Presbyterian Church, and he is affiliated with the Panora Lodge No. 410, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Pleasant Valley Lodge No. 398, Knights of Pythias, Kiwanis Club, and Chamber of Commerce. He also holds membership in the Ohio State and National Funeral Directors Associations. He is a member of Negley Lodge No. 565, F. & A. M.; Salem Chapter, R. A. M.; Omega Council No. 44, R. & S. M.; Salem Commandery K. T.; Al Koran Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S.


Harvey J. Harrold. —As president and general manager of the H. J. Harrold Tool Company, at Columbiana, Mr. Harrold is recognized as one of the able and highly success-ful business men of Columbiana County. He was born at

Columbiana, Aug. 13, 1878, the son of Samuel and Nancy (Culp) Harrold.


Samuel Harrold was born at Columbiana, Ohio, and died in 1924. His widow is a native of Mahoning County, Ohio, and lives at Columbiana. He was reared on a farm near Columbiana and attended the district schools. By trade, he was a blacksmith, and in later life Mr. Harrold owned and operated a farm. He was a Republican and served as township trustee. He held membership in the Mennonite Church. Two children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Harrold: Harvey J., subject of this sketch; and Mary, married Cassius Orr, lives at Columbiana.


Following his attendance in Columbiana Schools Harvey J. Harrold attended Mt. Union College and Canfield Normal School. He taught school for one year and during 1898 and 1901 Mr. Harrold worked as a machine blacksmith and forger with the Enterprise Machine Company, at Columbiana. During 1901-14 he conducted a blacksmith shop at Columbiana, and in the latter year he established his present business, the H. J. Harrold Tool Company. They are specialists in hand forged tools and are among the largest tool manufacturers in the United States. The plant occupies 19,000 square feet and employs 60 men. Tools, manufactured under the "Harrold" brand, have a wide sale throughout the United States and Canada. They specialize in the making of screw drivers, pliers, wrecking bars, bit braces, etc. The normal capacity of the plant is 18,000 screw drivers per day, 5,000 pliers, 4,000 wrecking bars, and 3,000 braces. During 1928-29 more than 365,000 screw drivers per month were manufactured. Mr. Harrold holds numerous patents on his tools, and at the present time has contracts for furnishing screw drivers to the Ford and Lincoln Motor Car Company. They also have had contracts to supply the U. S. Navy with a special type of screw driver.

On Dec. 27, 1897, Mr. Harrold was united in marriage with Miss Clara Uebele, born at New Springfield, Ohio, daughter of John and Naomi (Cleckler) Uebele. The former died in 1932 and the latter in 1933. They are buried at New Springfield. Mr. and Mrs. Harrold have a son, Roy V., born at Columbiana, Jan. 2, 1901. He is a graduate of Columbiana High School, and is secretary-treasurer of the J. Harrold Tool Company. He married Miss Elizabeth Fellers, of Columbiana and they have two children, Myrna Lee and Donna Jean.


Mr. Harrold and his son are independent in politics. He and his family are members of the Grace Reformed Church, and he and his son are affiliated with the Masonic Lodge and Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He also belongs to the Chamber of Commerce.


F. W. Reese is widely known in Columbiana County and is a substantial citizen of East Palestine, where he is clerk of the Public Service and Safety department. He was born here Dec. 10, 1879, the son of Christian and Theresa (Straube) Reese.


Both Christian Reese and his wife were natives of Germany and died in 1902 and 1904 respectively. They are buried at East Palestine. In early youth Mr. Reese emigrated to the United States and settled in Pennsylvania. He later spent six years in the coal mines of Illinois, and in 1876 came to East Palestine, where he was employed as a coal miner until the time of his death. Mr. Reese was a Republican, a member of the Presbyterian Church, and be-longed to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. There were two children born to Mr. and Mrs. Reese: 1. Clara B., married Charles Frank, of McMinville, Ore. 2. F. W., the subject of this sketch.

Following his graduation from East Palestine High School in 1896, F. W. Reese became a potter in the Sebring Pottery Company at East Palestine. He remained with that concern for several years and later lived at Pittsburgh, Pa. Upon his return to East Palestine he became associated in business with David Gaston, and they became well known plumbing and heating contractors, the firm continuing in business until 1919. At that time Mr. Reese purchased his partner's interest and continued the business until 1922. In that year he was appointed East Palestine's first Safety Director and served in that capacity until he resigned to become clerk of the department.


On Feb. 18, 1909, Mr. Reese married Miss Helen Bell, born at Signal, Columbiana County, March 22, 1879, daughter of Louis K. and Cornelia (Morris) Bell. The former died in 1925 and the latter in 1932. Both were natives of Ohio and are buried in Kimball Cemetery, near Elkton, Ohio. Mr. and Mrs. Reese have no children.


Mr. Reese is a Republican, a member of the United Presbyterian Church and belongs to the Masonic Lodge.


Fred Straube, uncle of Mr. Reese, was a native of East Palestine and served throughout the Spanish-American War.


Henry Clifford Gorby, - A prominent and highly esteemed citizen of Columbiana County is Henry Clifford Gorby, lawyer, of Columbiana, and he is a member of a well known pioneer family of this section. He was born in Middleton Township, Columbiana County, May 20, 1886, the son of William L. and Joanna (Godsleben) Gorby.


William L. Gorby was born in Middleton Township, and now resides on a farm near Rogers, Ohio. He is the son of Henry Gorby, who enlisted for service during the Civil War and died of fever during the siege of Vicksburg. He

was a member of the Third Ohio Battery. A brother of William L. Gorby, Pierce Gorby, was killed at the Battle of Chattanooga in 1863. William L. Gorby has always been a farmer and has spent his entire life on the Gorby homestead in Middleton Township. He is a Republican and has served as township trustee and school director. He holds membership in the United Brethren Church. Joanna (Godsleben) Gorby was born at Calcutta, Ohio. Their children are: 1. Henry Clifford, the subject of this sketch. 2. George O., who is manager of the Firestone Farms near Columbiana. 3. Leo G., who is connected with the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Company. 4. William Leroy, lives at Huron, Ohio.


Henry Clifford Gorby attended and taught the district schools of Middleton Township and received the degree of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Law at Valparaiso Uni-versity, Valparaiso, Ind., in 1909. After his admission to the West Virginia bar, Mr. Gorby practiced law at Pineville, W. Va., from 1909 until 1923 as a member of the firm of Childers & Gorby. He then located at Cleveland, Ohio, as an examiner with the Guarantee Title & Trust Company, and continued in that work until 1933. During the following year he worked on the Gorby homestead in Columbiana County. Since April, 1934, he has conducted a private law practice at Columbiana. Mr. Gorby is Justice of the Peace in Middleton Township. While a resident of Pineville, W. Va., he served as mayor and member of the board of education.


On June 7, 1911, Mr. Gorby was united in marriage with Iva Lyons, born at Rogers, Ohio, Nov. 8, 1889, daughter of Matthew and Madora (Nahr) Lyons. Both were born at Columbiana, Ohio, and live at East Palestine. Mr. Lyons is a retired farmer. Iva (Lyons) Gorby died Feb. 1, 1921, and is buried at East Palestine. Mr. Gorby is a Republican and belongs to the Masonic Lodge and Independent Order of Odd Fellows.


Francis H. Lang. —Outstanding among the most successful young lawyers of Columbiana County is Francis H. Lang, of East Liverpool. He was born at Manchester, Ohio, June 4, 1907, the son of James Walter, Sr., and Mary (Harover) Lang.


James Walter Lang, Sr., is recognized as Manchester's most representative citizen and influential business man. He was born there and has spent his entire life in that city. Mr. Lang is the owner and proprietor of a hardware and furniture business, and also operates a fine garage and modern hotel at Manchester. He is a Republican, a member of the Presbyterian Church, and belongs to the Knights of Pythias. His wife is also a native of Manchester, Ohio. They are the parents of twin sons : Francis H., subject of this sketch; and James Walter, Jr., who is a well known lawyer. Following his graduation from Manchester High School he received the degree of Bachelor of Arts at Ohio Wesleyan University in 1929 and the degree of LL. B. at Ohio State University in 1932. He has practiced law at West Union, Ohio, and is the prosecuting attorney of Adams County. He was admitted to the Ohio bar Aug. 17, 1932.


Mary Harover was the daughter of Capt. Francis Marion Harover, who was born at Aberdeen, Ohio, Jan. 20, 1842. He died May 10, 1921, and is buried at Manchester. He spent many years as president of the Bank of Manchester, and was a Civil War veteran, having served as a member of Company D, 175th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He enlisted

on Aug. 14, 1862, and received his discharge on Jan. 6, 1865. He held membership in the Loyal Legion of Ohio, and was a past commander.


Francis H. Lang is a graduate of Manchester High School, class of 1925; Ohio Wesleyan University, Bachelor of Arts, 1929; and Bachelor of Law at Ohio State University, class of 1932. After his admission to the Ohio State Bar in August, 1932, Mr. Lang immediately established his present practice at East Liverpool as an associate of W. B. Hill. They have offices in the Potters Savings and Loan Building.


Mr. Lang is a Republican, a member of the Masonic Lodge, Rotary Club, Sigma Phi Epsilon and Delta Theta Phi fraternities, and Order of the Coif. He also belongs to the Columbiana County, Ohio State, and American Bar Associations.


Mr. Lang was married Oct. 20, 1934, to Miss Rachel Boyce, of Chester, W. Va., daughter of the late Charles R. and Sue (Esterly) Boyce, natives of Ohio. He is deceased, and she resides in Chester, W. Va. He was secretary-treasurer of the Harker Pottery Company, vice president of the First National Bank of East Liverpool, and president of the City Hospital Board of Trustees for 27 years.


Edwin A. Coles, widely known Doctor of Osteopathy, ranks among the substantial young professional men of Salem and Columbiana County. He was born at Toronto, Jefferson County, Ohio, Oct. 13, 1904, the son of William G. and Gertrude (Agner) Coles.


William G. Coles, who died in 1910, was a native of Pennsylvania. His wife was born at East Liverpool and died in 1918. They are buried at East Liverpool. Mr. Coles was a marble cutter by trade and during 1905-10 engaged in business at East Liverpool as a member of the firm of Coles &

Everson. He was a Democrat and held membership in the English Lutheran Church. Gertrude (Agner) Coles was the daughter of John Agner, who served with a Pennsylvania regiment throughout the Civil War. To Mr. and Mrs. Coles were born two sons : 1. Harold Williams, research chemist, identified with the Mellon Institute at Pittsburgh, Pa. 2. Russell Allen, insurance, at Akron, Ohio. 3. Edwin A., the subject of this sketch.


After his graduation from East Liverpool High School in 1922 Edwin A. Coles was connected with the Mutual Supply Company of Cleveland for two years. He then en-tered the Kirksville College of Osteopathy and Surgery, from which he was graduated in 1927. He then established his present successful practice at Salem.


Dr. Coles is a Republican, a member of the English Lutheran Church, and belongs to the Kiwanis Club, and Atlas Club. He is also identified with the Ohio State Osteopathic Society and American Osteopathic Association.


Jesse Bernard Blumenstiel. —Identified with the law firm of Hart, Bluemenstiel & Strong, attorneys, with offices in the First National Bank Building, Alliance, Mr. Blumenstiel is recognized as one of the able young lawyers of Stark County and is a prominent citizen of the community. He was born at Sebring, Ohio, March 28, 1905, the son of John Frederick and Carolyn Maude (Weigel) Blumenstiel.


John Frederick Blumenstiel was a native of Hamilton County, Ohio, and died at Sebring in 1919. His widow was a native of Indiana and died Oct. 9, 1934, and both are buried at Sebring, Ohio. Mr. Blumenstiel was reared and educated at Evansville, Ind., and as a young man learned the trade of potter. He worked in various potteries at Evansville, East Palestine and Sebring. Mrs. Carolyn Blumenstiel was

very active in Republican politics in Stark County, havink served several years on the Stark County Board of Elections, and while a resident of Sebring, Ohio, she served for many years as president of the Board of Education. Mr. Blumenstiel was a Republican, a member of the Presbyterian Church, and belonged to the Woodmen of the World. The following children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Bluemenstiel: 1. Bernice Estelle, a teacher, lives at Maxwell, N. Mex.

2. Jesse Bernard, subject of this sketch. 3. Jane Catherine, married Edward Bryan, lives at Sebring. 4. Victor, a law student at Ohio State University, lives at Alliance.


The early education of Jesse Bernard Blumenstiel was received in the public schools of Sebring, from which he was graduated in 1922. He then spent a year at Wooster College and in 1927 received the degree of LL. B. at Ohio State University, being admitted to the bar in the same year. Mr. Blumenstiel was associated with the law firm of Hart & Koehler, at Alliance, until 1930, when he became a member of the firm of Hart, Blumenstiel & Strong, as mentioned above. He holds membership in the Stark County, Ohio State, and American Bar Associations.


On Aug. 19, 1930, Mr. Blumenstiel was united in marriage with Miss Mary Stuart Hunt, of Coshocton, Ohio, born Nov. 27, 1904, daughter of Robert T. and Nellie (Ricketts) Hunt. Both were born at Coshocton, and are deceased. Mr. Hunt, who died in 1930, married (second) Iva Weeks, of Coshocton, who resides there. He was president of the Hunt-Crawford Manufacturing Company for 20 years, and also had other business interests at Coshocton. His father, Rev. William E. Hunt, was pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, at Coshocton, for more than 40 years. He wrote the first history of Coshocton County in 1876. Robert T. Hunt was a Democrat, a member of the Presbyterian Church, and belonged to the Elks lodge. Mary Stuart (Hunt) Blumenstiel is a grad-

uate of Mary Lyons Private School, at Swarthmore, Pa., and Ohio Wesleyan University, Bachelor of Arts, class of 1927. She belongs to Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Mr. and Mrs. Blumenstiel have a daughter, Marilyn, born July 28, 1932.


Mr. Blumenstiel has always been a Republican, and is a member of the Stark County Republican Executive Committee, and secretary of the Republican Central Committee of Alliance. He is a director of the Kiwanis Club, and is affiliated with the Conrad Lodge F. & A. M.; Chi Phi and Phi Delta Phi fraternities. He and his wife also are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.


George Weigel, maternal grandfather, was a private in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He was a native of Evansville, Ind.


Adrian P. Howald. —Few citizens of Massillon are better known than Adrian P. Howald, who is service and safety director. He was born at Massillon, July 18, 1874, the son of Christian and Adelaide (Pfouts) Howald.


Christian Howald was born at Massillon, April 16, 1848, and died March 10, 1910. As a boy he learned the moulder's trade as an apprentice of his father, Jeremiah Howald, who was then foreman in the old Russell foundry at Massillon. Christian Howald engaged in this work until his retirement in 1905. Mr. Howald was a Democrat and served as a mem-ber of the city council from the Second Ward during 1906-10. He held membership in the Knights of Labor, International Moulders Union and The Maccabees. He also was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Evangelical Church. His brother, Jeremiah Howald, Jr., was a Union soldier during the Civil War and was killed at the battle of Stony Creek. Adelaide (Pfouts) Howald was born at Wilmot, Ohio, June 26, 1851.

She resides at Massillon. She is a member of the Methodist Church. There were four children in the Howald family: 1. Adrian P., the subject of this sketch. 2. Rodney W., lives at Cleveland. 3. Everett J., who died in 1912. 4. Myrtle, married Harry Caldwell, lives at Massillon.


Following his graduation from Massillon High School in 1896, Adrian P. Howald entered the employ of James Walker, paint and wall paper dealer at Massillon. He later spent six years in the wall paper and paint business of Bahney & Spaulding. He was identified with the Russell foundry for several years, and in 1908 became foundry foreman for the Massillon Foundry & Machine Shop, in which capacity he served until 1923. For a time he was employed by the Bean Spring Company and Eaton Spring Company, Inc. In 1929 Mr. Howald opened a gasoline and service station at 916 Tremont Street, West, which he still owns and operates.


Mr. Howald is a Democrat. He served as a member of the city council, Second Ward, during 1910-12, and in November, 1933 was elected president of the city council. On Jan. 9, 1934, however, he resigned from the latter appointment to become city service and safety director.


On June 28, 1898, Mr. Howald was united in marriage with Miss Anna Mattern, born at Richville, Ohio, April 15, 1877, daughter of Adam and Catherine (Schneider) Mattern. Both were natives of Germany and died in 1908 and 1927 respectively. They are buried at Richville, Ohio. During the Franco-Prussian War, Mr. Mattern served as a sergeant in the German army. He was a blacksmith by trade and also operated a woodworking shop. He was a Democrat and held membership in the Reformed Church. To Mr. and Mrs. Howald were born five children: 1. Opal Myrtle, born June 20, 1900, married Roland Swingle, lives at Massillon. 2. Christian D., born June 24, 1902, died in 1933. His widow,

Grace (Heck) Howald and three children. 1. Christian G. 2. Willard. 3. James. They reside in Massillon. 3. Emerald G., born Sept. 12, 1909, the widow of Charles Miller, lives at Massillon. 4. Bernice Adria, born May 2, 1911, died in 1916. 5. Garnet, born June 5, 1914, lives at home.


Mr. Howald holds membership in the Protective Home Circle, International Moulders Association, Fraternal Order of Eagles, and Loyal Order of Moose.


Since 1911 Mr. Howald has also served as a Notary Public.


Enoch Faulliner. —One of the best known and most dependable citizens of Columbiana County is Enoch Faulkner, who is serving as Mayor of East Palestine. He is a native of England, born near Liverpool, Feb. 24, 1884, the son of William and Emily (Rowley) Faulkner.


William Faulkner and his wife were born in England. He was employed in the coal mines of his native land and in 1882 came to the United States and settled at Carnegie, Pa. Two years later he located at East Palestine, and was em-ployed by the State Line Coal Company, Prospect Coal Com-pany, and Carbon Hill Coal Company. He was a Republican, a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and belonged to the Sons of St. George. Mr. Faulkner died in 1893 and his wife died in 1925. Both are buried at East Palestine. Their children were : 1. John Thomas, lives at Richmond, Calif. 2. Enoch, the subject of this sketch. 3. George William, lives at Canton, Ohio. 4. Amelia Anne, married Perry Allen, lives at East Palestine.


Enoch Faulkner attended the public schools of East Pales-tine but left school at the age of 13 years. He worked in the local potteries. He was employed by the Sebring Pottery Company and later by the Ohio China Company. He also spent two years with McCurdy Brothers, sewer pipe manu-

facturers, and since 1903 Mr. Faulkner has been in the service of the W. S. George Pottery Company as a potter.


On January 31, 1906, Mr. Faulkner married Miss Minnie Mae Neely, born at Elgin, Ill., Feb. 16, 1885, daughter of John and Susan (Krause) Neely. Both were born at Harrisburg, Pa. Mr. Neely is deceased and is buried in East Palestine. His wife died in 1930. To Mr. and Mrs. Faulkner were born four children: 1. George William, born Sept. 8, 1906, lives at Richmond, Calif., where he is employed by the Ford Motor Company. 2. Genevieve Ruth, born March 14, 1908, married George Schreckengost, lives at East Palestine, and they have two children, George Earl and Richard Lee. 3. Grace Naomi, born March 21, 1916, lives at home. 4. Charles E., born Aug. 18, 1922.


Mr. Faulkner is a Republican and during 1926-27 was a member of the city council. He was elected to the office of Mayor of East Palestine in 1933. He has also been a member of the volunteer fire department since 1902. He is affiliated with the Knights of Pythias, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and National Brotherhood of Potters.


Robert G. Hoffman. —One of Massillon's representative young men is Robert G. Hoffman, attorney, who has offices at 137 Lincolnway East. He was born at Canton, Ohio, Sept. 29, 1903, the son of George W. and Alice L. (Romy) Hoffman.


George W. Hoffman was born in Germany and was brought to this country in infancy by his parents, who settled at Cumberland, Md. He became a baker by trade and spent many years as foreman with the Andrews Baking Company at Canton. He was later identified with the General Baking Company as superintendent and resigned in 1915 to become assistant foreman in the Sweeney Bakery. During 1918-30 he was superintendent of Beaumont's New

System Bakery at Canton. He is now retired. Mr. Hoffman is a Democrat, a member of the Lutheran Church, and belongs to the Loyal Order of Moose, Modern Woodmen of America, and Maccabees. His wife was born at Canton and died Dec. 9, 1924. She is buried in West Lawn Cemetery. To Mr. and Mrs. Hoffman the following children were born: 1. William F. 2. Pearl, married Joseph L. Hilton. 3. Robert G., subject of this sketch. 4. Morello. 5. Verdello, married Harold L. Boylan. All live at Canton except the subject.


After his graduation from Canton McKinley High School in 1923, Robert G. Hoffman spent a year at Ohio State Uni-versity. He then was identified with the Loehr Lumber Company until 1924, at which time he organized the State Collection Agency at Massillon. Mr. Hoffman took cor-respondence work in law at the Blackstone Institute, Chicago, Illinois, and was admitted to the bar Feb. 12, 1932. He has since practiced law in this city and is attorney for the Inland Loan Company, C. L. Arnold Funeral Home, Incorporated, and Hall Casket Company, Inc. He is also legal adviser for the State Collection Agency.


On June 16, 1926, Mr. Hoffman married Miss Mildred C. Capion, of Canton, born June 26, 1905, daughter of Clarence E. and Tessie (Howe) Capion. They are natives of Massillon. Mr. and Mrs. Hoffman have no children.


Mr. Hoffman is a Republican, a member of the Presbyterian Church, and belongs to the Masonic Lodge. He also is a member of the Massillon and Stark County Bar Associations.


Fred L. Romy, maternal grandfather of Robert G. Hoffman, was a native of Switzerland, and served throughout the Civil War as a corporal. He was a member of the Canton city police force for many years and retired in 1912.


From 1920-21 he was a member of Battery E, 134th Field Artillery, Ohio National Guard, and was one of the organiz-

ers. In 1921 he transferred to the Service Battery, 134th Field Artillery, and served until June 1923 when he was honorably discharged as a sergeant.


Harold A. Paul. —One of the better known young business men of Massillon is Harold A. Paul, who is interested in the general insurance business in this city with offices at 109 North Erie Street. He was born at Massillon, Sept. 18, 1902, the son of Gustavus G. and Catherine (Keller) Paul.


Gustavus G. Paul, deceased, was a representative citizen and widely known business man of Massillon. He was born here and spent his entire life in this city. His education was received in St. Mary's parochial school and he also attended St. Vincent's College, at Beatty, Pa. He was a printer by trade and worked on the "Massillon American", a local weekly publication. Later, he was a compositor on the "Massillon Independent", while its editor, Robert P. Skinner, was ambassador to Turkey. Mr. Paul took a prominent part in local politics and for 20 years served as justice of the peace. He also was clerk of the city council. He studied law late in life and at the age of 50 years was admitted to the Ohio bar. He also was the founder of the G. G. Paul Insurance Agency, and was identified with that business at the time of his death, Dec. 17, 1933. His wife died Nov. 11, 1933. Both are buried at Massillon. Mr. Paul was organist of St. Mary's Catholic Church for nearly half a century, and was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a Democrat and belonged to the Stark County Bar Association. Harold A. Paul was reared and educated at Massillon, and for a time was connected with the offices of the Stark County surveyor. During 1919-22 he was associated with his father's insurance business, and he then went to Brewster, Ohio, where he was associated with the engineering department of the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railroad Company. How-ever, in 1924 Mr. Paul returned to Massillon to again become associated with the G. G. Paul Insurance Agency. He assumed full management of the office at the death of his father in 1933.


Mr. Paul is a Democrat, and is an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He is unmarried.


Harry C. Aker. —As president of the Massillon City Council, Mr. Aker is well known in the city as a substantial business man. He was born at Wooster, Ohio, May 15, 1887, the son of August and Mary (Keasey) Aker.


August Aker was born in Butler County, Pa., and spent his early life there. At the age of 21 years he located in Wayne County, Ohio, where he successfully engaged in gen-eral farming until his retirement in 1929. He resides at Dalton, Ohio. Mr. Aker is a Democrat and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. His wife was born in Butler County, Pa., and died in 1924. Their children were : 1. Maud, lives at Dalton. 2. Jean, married A. A. Amstutz, lives at Cleveland. 3. Florence, married F. R. Snodgrass, lives at Barberton, Ohio. 4. Hattie, married J. Schupp, lives at Akron. 5. Harry C., the subject of this sketch. 6. Harry C. Aker is a graduate of the public schools of Dalton, Ohio. He engaged in various types of employment, being identified with the following organizations: Clark Lumber Company, at Barberton; Babcock-Wilcox Boiler Shop, at Barberton; Pittsburgh Valve & Fitting Company; O. H. Miller Grocery Company; Ohio Insulator Company; Westinghouse Insulator Company, at Berry, Pa.; proprietor of a grocery business at Cleveland for seven years; and in 1921 Mr. Aker established his present grocery business at Massillon. A bakery was added in 1931, and since 1927 Mr. Aker has operated a grocery route throughout Stark County.


On Jan. 5, 1905, Mr. Aker married Miss Carrie Keifer, born at Dalton, Ohio, Nov. 27, 1880, daughter of William and Esther (Rowland) Keifer. They were born in Wayne County. Mr. Keifer died in 1930 and his widow resides at Marshallville, Ohio. Mr. and Mrs. Aker have no children.


Mr. Aker has always been a Democrat and served as a member of the city council until his appointment Jan. 20, 1934 as president of that body. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and is affiliated with the Moose, Elk and Eagle lodges. He also belongs to the Massillon Better Business Bureau and Grocers Association.


David D. Dowd is a leading citizen of Massillon, and well known throughout Stark County as an able young lawyer. He was born at Seville, Medina County, July 7, 1904, the son of D. D. and Bessie V. (Crawford) Dowd.


D. D. Dowd was born at Seville, where he still resides. At the age of nine years his father died and he was forced to help support the family. He worked as a farm hand until 23 years of age, and then purchased a farm of 115 acres in Medina County, in partnership with his brother, C. A. Dowd. They continued as partners until 1916 when D. D. became owner of the homestead, where he now resides. He is a Republican, a member of the Presbyterian Church, and belongs to the Grange. The following children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Dowd: 1. David D., the subject of this sketch. 2. Mary V., married F. N. Owen, of Maumee, Ohio. 3. Parker F., lives at Seville. 4. Sidney, lives at Akron.


The Dowd family history dates back to 1639 when Henry Dowd came to this country from England. His great-great grandson, Ebenezer Dowd, served as an officer in the Revolu-tionary War as an aide to General Washington. In 1824, David D. Dowd came to Seville, Ohio, from Connecticut, where he was born in 1806. He was too old to serve in the Civil War, but organized a company from Seville, which served throughout the war period. He was afterward known as Colonel Dowd.


Porter W. Crawford, maternal grandfather of David D. Dowd, was born at Seville and at the age of 19 years was one of the 100 day volunteers who guarded Washington, D. C. in 1864. He died June 11, 1932, and is buried at Seville.


David D. Dowd acquired his early education in the public schools of Leroy, Ohio. He was graduated from Wooster College in 1925 with the degree of Bachelor of Arts, and four years later received the degree of LL. B. at the Cleveland Law School, being admitted to the Ohio State bar Aug. 5, 1929. Until March 1, 1930, Mr. Dowd was associated in the practice of law with D. D. McLaughlin, at Massillon. He has since conducted a private practice.


On Aug. 16, 1927, Mr. Dowd married Miss Martha C. Combrink, born at Ossian, Ind., Oct. 10, 1905, daughter of Charles E. and Hettie (Fullerton) Combrink. Both were born at Carrollton, Ill. Rev. Charles E. Combrink was ordained as a minister of the Presbyterian Church in 1899, his first pastorate being at Pierceton, Ind. He was later trans-ferred to Ossian, Ind., Murphysboro, Ill., Alton, Ill., Brook-

ston, Ind., Union City, Ind., and Richwood, Ohio. He has been located at Richwood since December, 1926. Rev. Com-brink is a graduate of Wabash College and Princeton Uni-versity. He is a Democrat. Hettie (Fullerton) Combrink died in 1923 and is buried at Carrollton, Ill. He married (second) Bertha Irion, a native of West Virginia. Mrs. Dowd is a graduate of Wooster College, Bachelor of Science, class of 1927. She is a member of the Massillon Women's Club. A brother, Harry N. Combrink, resides at Carrollton. To Mr. and Mrs. Dowd have been born two sons: David D. Jr., born Jan. 31, 1929, and John C., born April 2, 1933.


Mr. Dowd is a Republican, a member of the Presbyterian Church, and belongs to the Independent Order of Odd Fel-lows, Delta Theta Phi fraternity, and Y. M. C. A. He also holds membership in the Massillon and Stark County Bar Association.


Edward M. Ertle. —Holding the office of chief of police in the city of Massillon since 1903, Mr. Ertle has taken a prominent part in the civic affairs of the community. He was born in this city, April 20, 1862, the son of Martin and Barbara (Hamburger) Ertle.


Martin Ertle and his wife were natives of Baden-on-Rhine, Germany. Both are deceased and are buried at Mas-sillon. He was a stone mason and cooper by trade, and at the age of 22 years emigrated to the United States and settled at Massillon. He later conducted a grocery business in this city. Mr. Ertle was a Democrat and held membership in St. Mary's Catholic Church. To Mr. and Mrs. Ertle were born the following children: 1. George, who died in 1894. 2. Edward M. Ertle was reared and educated at Massillon, and as a young man was employed in the grocery establish-ment of Frank A. Sible. Later he was connected with the meat business of Verkle & Lise. For a time he worked as a cooper in the shops of W. A. Taylor & Company. Mr. Ertle was identified with his father's grocery business for five years, the store being located at Main and Exchange streets. He was employed by the Massillon Bridge Company for a time and on May 8, 1894, became a member of the city police force. He assumed his present duties as chief of the department in 1903.


On June 7, 1886, Mr. Ertle married Miss Susan Garver, of Massillon, daughter of Christian and Genevieve Garver. They were natives of Switzerland and are deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Ertle have two daughters: 1. Grace, lives at home. 2. Gertrude, married John S. Meininger, of Massillon. They have two daughters, Rita and Virginia.


Mr. Ertle is a Democrat, a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and belongs to the Knights of Columbus, B. P. O. Elks, and F. O. Eagles. He is president (1935) of the Ohio Police Chiefs Association, and served as president during 1915, also. He is a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, and served as guard in 1931-32, on the National Staff.


Leo F. Heitger. —Identified with Heitger Bros. Funeral Home, at 639 First Street, N. E., Mr. Heitger is recognized as one of the able and substantial business men of Massillon. He is a member of a prominent pioneer family of the city, born here June 2, 1884, and the son of Anton and Mary (Klipfel) Heitger.

Anton Heitger, deceased, was a representative business man of Massillon for many years and founder of the under-taking business which is now conducted by his sons. He was born at Senheim-on-the-Mosel, Prussia, and was ten years old when he emigrated to the United States with his parents. They arrived in New York City after a 52 day voyage on a small sailing vessel, and immediately went by boat up the Hudson River and through the Erie Canal, across the Great Lakes to Chicago, Ill., and thence to Milwaukee, Wis. Shortly after their arrival in that city there was a great epidemic of cholera and three brothers and two sisters of Anton Heitger succumbed. His parents were also stricken but survived and they later came to Massillon, where the father followed his trade as a stone mason. The son, Anton, became a cabinet maker, grid later followed his trade in a furniture factory at Pittsburgh, Pa. On July 16, 1863, he enlisted for service in the Civil War as a member of Company E, 46th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and joined his regiment at Kelly's Ford, Va. He participated in three major battles and was with General Sherman on his famous march to the sea. He received his discharge, July 16, 1865, and returned to Massillon. On March 22, 1869, he married Miss Mary Anna Klipfel, and during that same year Mr. Heitger became interested in the funeral business at Massillon. He successfully remained as the city's leading pioneer funeral director for 40 years and subsequently turned the business over to his sons, Leo F. and Otto H. Heitger. He had conducted 3,000 funerals during his career. Mr. Heitger died Jan. 13, 1926, and is buried in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, at Massillon. His wife was born at Massillon and died June 27, 1929. She also is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery. Mr. Heitger was a Democrat, a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, and belonged to the C. M. B. A. The following children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Heitger:

Leo F. Heitger is a graduate of the parochial schools of Massillon and in 1909 was a member of the graduating class of the Cleveland School of Embalming. He had previously spent ten years in the employ of the John Meinhart Contracting & Building Company before taking up the study of embalming. In 1909 Mr. Heitger became an associate of his brother, Otto H. Heitger, and they continued with the father until the latter's retirement. It was in 1918 that he and his brother Otto H. Heitger purchased their father's interest. The original funeral home was on old Mill Street, now First Street. In September, 1923, a new establishment was erected by the firm. It is of two story construction, modern in its appointments, and is recognized as the city's leading funeral establishment. A complete funeral service is maintained by this well known firm. They hold member-ship in the Ohio State Funeral Directors Association.


On Jan. 18, 1914, Mr. Heitger was united in marriage with Miss Mary Emma Braun, born at Massillon, Jan. 1, 1888, daughter of August and Mary C. (Voerner) Braun, natives of Germany and Massillon, respectively. Mr. Braun died Nov. 26, 1921 and his wife died Jan. 8, 1928. They are buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Massillon. To Leo F. and Mary Emma (Braun) Heitger have been born the following children : 1. Edna Mary, born Dec. 23, 1914. 2. Irene Lucille, born May 29, 1916. 3. Howard Leo, born Jan. 13, 1918. 4. Robert Paul, born July 5, 1919. 5. Dorothy Mary, born Sept. 13, 1920. 6. Alice Florence, born Aug. 25, 1923.
