Following that period, for eight years he was a clerk in the store of Louis Gephart, at Niles, after which he was employed by the Erie Railroad Company, first as a telegraph operator and later as a billing clerk and following his em-ployment with the Erie Railroad he accepted a position with Reeves Bros. Boiler Works of Niles and remained with that firm for a period of eight and one-half years, progressing from bookkeeper to assistant manager. Reeves Bros. decided to move their plant to Alliance, Ohio, in 1893 and urged Hughes to go with them. However, he preferred to come to Warren, Ohio, where a small shop was then obtainable and make a trial of operating a business for himself and associates.

Consequently in July of 1893, the firm of Warren City Tank & Boiler Company was organized with A. R. Hughes, President; William F. Edwards, Vice President; B. W. Ed-wards, Secretary and Treasurer, and Daniel J. O'Rourke

Superintendent, and later on B. H. Seiple was employed as Assistant Superintendent. On account of the money panic of 1893 this firm found the first five years of its existence extremely hard sledding. Later on success became assured, resulting in their erecting in 1915 a very complete plant to specialize chiefly in the fabrication and construction of all classes of steel tanks, and during the 41 years of its existence to this date, the Warren City Tank & Boiler Company has enjoyed the highest rating from its creditors as well as the friendship and respect of its customers.

Aside from being successful in business Mr. Hughes has cheerfully responded to all calls made upon him for his time and means in aid of any worthy public movements. He was especially active during the period of the Great War when in a large degree he subordinated his business and private interests to the welfare of his country and his efforts were continually cooperated with others in the splendid record achieved by Trumbull County in its war work. In June of 1917, Mr. Hughes was elected chairman of the Red Cross War Fund of Trumbull County, said funds amounting to $135,000.00 and of which amount $76,000.00 was contributed in Warren, Ohio. Of this fund he remained chairman until February of 1920, by which time all of the said funds had been used for the purpose for which they were contributed. In May, 1918, he was elected chairman of the Trumbull War Chest Association, representing a fund of over $317,000.00, contributed for war purposes and he remained chairman of this organization until 1923, at which time all of the said funds had been finally distributed in a satisfactory manner to all concerned.

He is a member of Old Erie Lodge No. 3 Free and Accepted Masons, Warren Council No. 58 Royal and Select Masters, Mahoning Chapter No. 66 Royal Arch Masons, Warren Commandery No. 39 Knight Templars, and a life

member of Al Koran Temple Nobles of the Mystic Shrine Of Cleveland, Ohio. He is a member of Warren Lodge of Elks No. 295, also Ali Baba Grotto, of Warren, Ohio, and has membership in the following clubs, The Masonic Club of Warren, Whitehall Club of New York City.

He has been a member of the Republican party all his life and has always considered it his positive duty to vote at all elections. However, he has never held or sought any political office in Warren or elsewhere. For many years he has been a member of the Board of Trade and later of the Chamber of Commerce of Warren, Ohio. For several years he was a director of the Western Reserve National Bank of Warren, Ohio, resigning from that board for the reason that he found it impossible to attend all of the meetings of the board of directors.

Since March, 1912, and to date he has been a trustee of Warren Public Library and deeply interested in its work. From the time of the organization of the Warren Com-munity Fund in 1921 to the present date, a period of twelve years he has made the largest individual contribution each year to the said fund and has constantly expressed his belief as to the great benefit of this organization to the community of Warren, Ohio. He is a member of the Y. M. C. A. and has liberally contributed to this organization, also to the Y. W. C. A., both of Warren, Ohio.

For many years he has been a member of the First Pres-byterian Church of Warren, Ohio, and in 1921 he had installed in the said church a very complete four manual organ including echo organ with chimes, etc., at a cost of $20,000.00. In 1913 he erected a fine band stand in the Court House Park of Warren, Ohio, and has frequently given public band concerts at his own expense.

bus, Ohio, and of the International Society for Crippled Children of Toledo, Ohio.

In 1906, the organization of Warren City Hospital Association was formed with the object of building a much needed hospital in Warren, Ohio. He was elected vice president on the Board of Trustees in which capacity he continued to serve until December 21st, 1917, at which time he was elected president and which position he has continuously held and continues to occupy at this date.

The original Warren City Hospital cost $45,000.00. However, the people of Warren contributed in several campaigns so as to enlarge the hospital, resulting in it now having a capacity of 125 beds and a plant that could not at this date be replaced at less than $600,000.00 and it is conceded by all connected with the existence of this institution that it has been accomplished chiefly through the constant efforts of Mr. Hughes as its president. He has himself contributed during the past twenty-eight years of his connection with Warren City Hospital over $50,000 to this institution in addition to the immense amount of time required from him during the past seventeen years as president, but considers this contribution of time and money as the most worthy thing he has done to date.

At Niles, Ohio, Sept. 4, 1888, Mr. Hughes was united in marriage to Miss Jennie Edwards, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Fletcher Edwards of Niles and after a very happy married life of forty-two years Mrs. Hughes died Sept. 28, 1930, leaving the memories of a loving wife and devoted mother. The children of this union were Raymond Edwards Hughes, born Oct. 22, 1893, and married to Elizabeth Pond, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George S. Pond of Warren Ohio, Sept. 8, 1917; and Margaret Elizabeth Hughes, born Sept. 2, 1906, and married June 5, 1929, to Philip Leslie Wright, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Wright of Warren, Ohio.
