Dear Allen,

In reference to your e mail, there are in fact two wills in the New Jersey State Archives relevant to the Biggs family of Cumberland County, New Jersey.

The first is the will of William Biggs, Hopewell Township, Cumberland County dated Jan. 2, 1794, proven Jan. 6, 1794. In this will, William names the following relatives: nephew William Biggs (son of this brother Daniel), nephew William Biggs (son of his brother John), and the children of his brother Jeremiah, ie., Lazar, Noah, Jeremiah, William, Aaron, and Ephraim.

The second Cumberland County will is that of Rachel Randolph, (late Rachel Reeves) from 1806. Rachel names the following relatives: Her sisters Easter Davis and Abigail Biggs, her brothers Elisha Smith and Daniel Smith, and the children of Abigail Biggs - sons Lazar, Noah, Jeremiah, William, Aaron, and Ephraim, and daughters Rachel Castow and Ami Castow.

This family also appears in various Cumberland County tax lists and church records. The records of the Deerfield Presbyterian Church show that William, son of Jeremiah Biggs, was baptised by Rev. Enoch Green in 1771, and Aaron, son of Jeremiah Biggs, was baptised in 1773. (earlier records are lost).

All of this tends to support the Biggs family as outlined in "A Short History of the Harrod and Biggs families", except for it's initial statements about brothers Jeremiah, Benjamin and Joseph coming to Philadelphia.

So far, I have no definitive records of where this family was located before they appear in New Jersey about 1750. I can make an educated guess. Most Presbyterian settlers in Cumberland county came from Connecticut or Long Island. There was a large Biggs family in Suffolk County, NY (the eastern 2/3 or Long Island) founded by Thomas Biggs, one of the founders and original proprietors of the town of Brookhaven (year 1655).

That's all I have on this family at the moment. If I find anything more, I will let you know.

THE SENTINEL

MT. GILEAD, OHIO

THURSDAY NOV. 1, 1888

HORRIBLE!

The Crime of Murder and Arson

Shocks the Usual Quietude of

Morrow County.

Who is the Culpit? There

Seems to Be No Positive Clue

-He is Safe From Every-

thing, Save Him Con

science.

Last Friday morning the residence of David Sellers, who lived in the second house west of "Blackbird," in Harmony township, was burned to the ground. Among the ashes were the charred remains of David Sellers and his wife, who were supposed to have perished in the flames. Subsequent developments, however, make plain the theory that murder was first committed. Although nothing remained of Mr. Sellers, but the body and one arm, the other portions having been entirely consumed, the head of Mrs. Sellers showed too plainly for doubt that some blunt instrument like a hatchet or hammer had been used with deadly effect. Her hair was matted with blood, as was a portion of the clothing.

That such a horrible crime should have been committed in our own community is a revolting thought, but the evidence too plain for disbelief. Why it was committed is a still greater mystery.

The time once was when David Sellers was as neatly and finely dressed as any young man in the community. Later, however, he turned his whole attention to the accumulation of money, and the family has since lived in the most miserable squalor, and miserly condition. Although he was known to be wealthy, owning some four hundred acres of land which was well stocked; etc., he was said, by those with whom he was most intimate, to have at all times but very little money about his house or person, hence the murder could have been committed by any one knowing his habits for the purpose of robbery. Neither could revenge have been a motive, for while no one particularly admired his habits, it may be said that the family had no enemies. What the object was, or who the criminal is, will remain shrouded in, mystery until that terrible accuser, conscience, compels the culpit to give up his secret that justice may be avenged. All the facts which can be learned will be found in the inquisition papers of Coroner James, a verbatim copy of which follows:

TESTIMONY.

RHODEBACK - my age is 26 in June I have been working for Mr. tellers since last March; It has been my home since that time; I was there yesterday morning and last evening; I was at Cardington yesterday; I went with family; I returned from Cardington just before dark; I don't know whether he drew any money out of bank or not; he paid me some money recently; I seen Mr. and Mrs. Sellers "about" dark, or little later; the last I seen Mrs. Sellers about half-past eight; "then I retired;" both were in usual health, excepting a bad cold, I went to bed about half-past eight or nine o'clock; I do not know what time Mr. Sellers got home. I went to sleep as soon as went to bed; I wakened up by some person hollowing; I do not know who it was, but suppose it was Miss Sellers; I slept up stairs in the north end of the house; I put my pants and shoes on, and then may vest and coat on; I got my overcoat out of setting room down stairs; the outside door was open; the first thing I thought of was I hollowed; then I opened the sitting room door; then as I came out I got my overcoat; I did not hear any noise in their department; Chloa was not there; when I came down stairs I heard the bell tap as I came down stairs; Mr. Sellers did not drink any intoxicating drink that I know of; the fire seemed to be in their department as far as I could see; they got supper by the fire-place; I don't think the had any fire in the stove from two or three days; I heard no racket after I went to bed; one of the horses was out at that time when I got up: they were in the habit of getting out sometimes; I think the house (If they did not leave any more fire than when I went to bed) the house was set on fire; I don't know whether I smelt chloroform or not; I don't know hardly what I did swell; I thought they had. been chloroformed; these are the best clothes I have; I have a better pair of pants they were burned up; I went to call Mr and Mrs. Sellers, then I went to got my trunk, but was too hot so I went outside of house and threw my shoes and coat over the fence, and then I hollowed fire; than I began to get the things out of the house; the first came was Sam. Gordon, Frank Mateer; I don't know how that door got open unless some one opened it; I don't think the furniture was destroyed that I know of; I have not been keeping company with their daughter at all; been no stranger there lately that I know of; they, in cold weather, generally leave a good fire at might; Mr. Sellers took butter to town, that is all I know about what he went to town for, I met Mr. Sherman in Cardington; was with him awhile; I went to the jewelry store with him; I am not acquainted with him very much; I heard the daughter say she would like to have a new dress for the fair, be said to wait a while and he would get it for her; she did not seem to be offended; Mr. Sellers have not had much money since last July he sold some of his cattle and I seen the man pay him he has not had any money since that time that I know of; I can not say positive that he had any hatchet in the house or not, "but think he had;" I was never in but one room up stairs; I don't know just what he had in there; "the reason" I went to Cardington; was to get my watch fixed, and besides they wanted me to go; I think they locked the door before they went, could not say positive.

CHLOA SELLERS.-Age about twenty-six or seven; we ate supper by candle light about five or six o'clock; last seen of them; David Sellers (her papa) was absent after that time; father and mother was both well when last seen of them; both of them ate heartily as usual; he came home about eleven o'clock p. m. They were sleeping apartment was in the south-east corner of house; my sleeping apartment was in the north-east room adjoining father and mother's my sleeping apartment was in the northeast room adjoining father and mother's room; hired hand slept up stairs; (his name) Wm. Rhodeback; my pa, as usual, waked me up when he came in; I was aroused up about 1 o'clock; supposed, I beard a horse is what aroused me or walking of a man; there was no smoke in my room as I could detect; I dressed as fast as I could, and as I open the door adjoining, the smoke came puffing very fast and thick; I hollered at pa and said, pa get up quick the house is full of smoke he answered, "Yes, yes," that was all he said; mother did not speak at al I; I went to the kitchen door I did not see any fire but lots of smoke; I looked in their room, I did not could not see anything at all for smoke; father's voice seemed as natural as ever; he did not make any effort to get up as I could see, I could not hear him make any noise whatever; I did not notice their breathing was heavy or not; I went out to draw a bucket of water and saw the sash in the south window a fire; I went and rang the bell and thin hollowed fire and run across the fields to Sam Gordon's; the hired hand was up stairs as far as I knew I did not see him until I came back from Gordon's; I did not think of the hired hand until I came back from Gordon 's; I came from Mr. Gordon's to Mr. Fritz's; I went from there home; the house was all in flames when I got home; the first I seen was the hired hand or Mr. Gordon I do not know which; my father's habit was not used to keeping mach money about the house; Mr. Sellers had money in Cardington, but do not know whether he brought it home or not: he came over to Mr. Fritz to pay him a small bill about two or three dollars as near as I can come to it; they have had no fire in the stove since Wednesday, although we keep fire in the fire-place all the time (generally); as far as I know I cannot say but what it was set afire; W m. Rhodeback seemed excited and hollowed fire; Wm. Rhodeback was to Cardington with us yesterday; I observed nothing out of order; all was as usual when I got home; father and mother would quarrel sometimes, but were all in the beat of humor last evening; my pa got me everything I wanted; I carried very little or any money; my father and mother was about; there was no strangers at our house lately; father and mother always slept with their heads one way I have no suspicion of any one that would set it afire; father and mother had some enemies, Mr. Lafe and Frank Green, but I do not say that there was any suspicion on them,

R. S. CORDON -My age is 33 years I live about a quarter of a mile (from) Mr. Sellers, I heard Mr. Mateer hollow for me about 9 o'clock; I went to the door and heard Miss Sellers hollow that their house was on fire, I went as soon as I could and I found that their house was all aflame. As soon as I could get there I began to throw things out of doors; I just thought where was Mr. and Mrs. Sellers; I asked and they did not know and I began knocking and pushing the windows in; I seen Mrs. Sellers but could not see him; all burnt in a crisp but could not get them out; I don't think he was in the bed for I did not see him; I could see the bed was all afire; about his money matters financially I could not say; my opinion about the fire is I could not say; the fire seem to originate from the kitchen; there was no intimacy as far as knew between the daughter and hired hand that I know of.

FRANK MATEER.-Age, 2! years; I was awakened up by someone halloing and seen a blaze in my window; I called Mr. Gordon and we went over; I seen Mrs. Sellers through the window; could not see him; I think they were both dead when we got there; my opinion is that the house was set afire; my opinion about the way they or her, by the marks about her, that there was foul play the covers on her bed was all burnt off, yet the bed was standing at that time.

HENRY FRITZ.-Age, 58; Mrs. Sellers is my sister; I live about a quarter of a mile from where they reside; I don't think anybody would do anything to get them out of the way; I think they had been chloroformed, but of course could not say; I don't think it could catch fire from the fire-place; I think they kept more or less money about the house; I don't think the daughter knew all about money matters; I do not suspicion anyone; when I got there everything was all in a blaze.

WILLIAM RHODEBACK (Recalled).-In regard to the house there was a buttery in southeast corner; kitchen in south-west corner; kitchen bedroom next, north of pantry; the parlor was in the north-east corner of house; the sitting room was in the north-west corner; I was awakened by a noise about two o'clock, or a little before; when I first raised up I saw fire in south part of the chamber; the part that wasn't finished. I hastily put on my pants and took my coat and shoes in my hand and ran down stairs into the sitting room out the front door; and then over the fence; then run back into the sitting room and opened the door into the kitchen, but the fire and smoke rolled in so that I could not see the bedroom door; I shut the door again and threw a few more things out of the sitting room; then I thought ht of my trunk up stairs, in which was thirty dollars of my money and some of my clothes, but could not get up stairs on account of the smoke and fire; then I threw a few more things out; and then I thought I would ring the bell; I ran around the house and grabbed the wire, but I guess the string with which the wire was tied to the bell broke, and I could not ring the bell then as I turned to come back I saw Sam. Gordon coming. When he came up he asked me where Dave and Tena were I did not answer right away; then he broke in the parlor door and I followed him in, and then we threw out s few things; then we went around to the east side of the house and Sam. asked me which was their bedroom window; I told him, but he misunderstood me and first broke in the pantry window; I told him the other window and he broke in the bedroom window, but the room was all afire so that we could not get in; I just got a glimpse of Tena laying on the bed; I might have seen Dave too, I don't know; Sam. said. oh, my God! they are dead then we just stood back and wouldn't do anything but just watch. When we came home from town I helped put the horses away; and then I changed my clothes and we ate supper; after supper Mrs. Sellers gave Dave some money out of her handkerchief, probably two or three dollars; Chloa and I went over across the road where the cows were to milk; Mrs. Sellers come over to help us a few minutes later; when Chloa and I were going over to milk we were talking about the people in town, and I don't know what else could not hear plain, ordinary noises down stairs, but could hear the door squeech when shut sometimes the hatchet and hammers sometimes were laid down by the kitchen door; sometimes on the window cases, just wherever they happen to use them; had three or four hammers, one of which are now used at the wagon shed, and I don't know where the others are. If they were murdered, it is my opinion it was for money.

PHYSICIANS STATEMENT.

We, the undersigned physicians, being duly summoned by the coroner of Morrow county to make a post mortem examination upon the remains of two bodies found in Harmony township, at the old home farm of David Sellers, in Morrow county, state of Ohio: The body of the male was completely charred over the surface, with both lower limbs burned away and the head entirely gone and could not be fund. There was a cut on the right arm, midway between the elbow and wrist, about two inches in length. The cervical vertebra was all there, in original position. No other marks of violence were found on the person The body of the female was completely charred except the head and face. The lower limbs were burned away up to the knees, and the greater part of the upper limbs were also burned away. The abdominal muscles were so burned away that the bowels were protruding through the opening. On the right side of the face the zygomatic arch and superior maxillary were broken through, with several contused wounds on the soft parts. Over the frontal bone, about one and a half inches above the nasal margin, was a wound that indented the bone and about the same distance above the right obit was a wound about one and one-fourth inches in diameter, and almost round that broke through the skull into the brain. Also another wound about the middle of and on the prominence of the parietal bone, about the same size as the wound over the right orbit, and broken through to the brain. The hair was steel gray and the greater part was not burned. There was a small hole in the soft part, just behind the molar tooth, about five-sixteenths of an inch in diameter and round. We also found that a large quantity of blood clots were formed in the axilla, mouth, eyes ears, around the neck and clothing adjacent to the head. The wounds upon the skull were sufficient to cause death; the contused wounds were made with the same instrument, and were inflicted by some person which caused death within a few minutes, and before burning.

The Biggs Family

The Census for Washington County, Pennsylvania, shows a widow, Abigail Birrgs, living on the land between Abner Brown, Sr., and Abner Brown Jr., in what is now Morgan Township, Greene County. She was the widow of Captain John Biggs, who was captured and burned at stake on the Crawford Expedition. It is thought that she was a daughter of Abner Brown Sr., whose wife was Abigail Luse.

Captain John Biggs, born December 27, 1851, son of Benjamin Biggs, was appointed a Lieutenant of militia at the first session of the Virginia Court at Blacks Cabin on Short Creek, Ohio County, in January 1777, and took an active part in the defense of the frontiers. He was a frequent visitor to the Tenmile Country where his wife's people had settled. He was chosen one of the captains at Mingo Bottoms on the Sandusky Expedition and was captured and burned at the stake. He had performed with outstanding officer who had been badly injured, a fact that may have hastened the death of Captain Biggs, for both he and the officer whom he had were murdered before the Colonel. The story of his death was told by Dr. Knight. At the time of his death in June 1782, it is not likely that Captain John Biggs was father of more than five or six children, and certainly not nine as given by one of the Ohio historians. After the death of Captain John Biggs, his wife, Abigail, returned to her people on the Tenmile living on land of Abner Brown, Sr., adjoining the land of Levi Harrod. As her children went to Knox County, Ohio about 1804, it is most likely that she went with them to that place. Page 258 He was married to Abigail BROWN on October 24, 1770 in Southold, Suffolk, NY.

He was buried in Grove Cemetery, Pleasant Twp., Knox Co., Ohio. WP Oct 11, 1825 Dated Sep 24, 1825 Revolutionary Soldier Muddy Creek, Green County, Pa !Levi Harrod (1-22-1750 to 10-2-1825) born in Bedford Cty., Pa.; died in Knox Cty, Ky (really Ohio). Married Rachel Mills (10-22-1752 to 9 -28-1834) Levi served under Capt Benj. Sites in the Revolution.

History of Knox County, Ohio - Norton 1862 Morgan Twp. The Harrods, Levi, William and Sam; Levi and Sam were in Clay Twp and William moved to Indiana. John Harrod was County Commissioner in 1811 and Levi Harrod in 1827.

Levi Harrod Sr lived in Waynesburg until 1811 when he moved to Knox County, to join his children and grandchildren. He was in both Va and Pa militias. He was County Judge for 30 years in what was then Washington County. Was trustee fot the Goshen Baptist Church. He fought in the Continental Line.

Levi Harrod, youngest son of John and Sarah (Moore) Harrod, was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, on January 22, 1750, and died in Knox County, Ohio, on October 2, 1825. He married about the time his family settled on the Tenmile and is listed in the 1772 tax list as the head of a family. As a military man his services did not attain the prominence of his older brothers, but he performed his regular tours of duty in the militia, where he advanced to the rank of lieutenant, serving much of the time in the company of Captain Benjamin Stites. This service extended beyond 1790, for he is listed as a guide on the "White Woman's Campaign." (Draper Mss. 37J174.) In civil life his activities played an important part in the refinement of the frontier community. As Justice of Peace at a time when that office was more important than the present, Levi Harrod acted as wise judge and counselor. His office at his home near the present Harold Bell Poultry Farm, was the scene of many early weddings in which he performed the ceremony. For many years he served as Moderator in Goshen Baptist Church, where he and his wife both belonged, and where he was frequently called upon to settle differences among members, or recall some erring member to his or her duty. It may be said that his influence was a factor in all walks of life in the Tenmile Country. Shortly before 1800, his sons began pioneering in Knox County, Ohio, and in the twilight of his years, Levi Hai-rod sold his plantation on Tenmile to join his children at that place. Goshen Baptist Church records disclose that on July 28, 1811, he and his wife asked for letters of dismissal and in 1813, they moved to Ohio. His wife was Rachel Mills, who was born October 22, 1752, and died September 28, 1834. She is buried with her husband in the Union Graveyard in Harrison Township. Levi Harrod's will was made on September 24, 1825, and names nine of his twelve children. He was married to Rachel MILLS.

23. Rachel MILLS was born on October 22, 1752 in Frederick, Frederick, Maryland. Birth could have been Oct 22, 1752 She died on September 28, 1834 in Pleasant Twp., Knox Co., Ohio. She was buried in Grove Cemetery, Pleasant Twp., Knox Co., Ohio. !Cemetery Inscriptions

Sold his land in Greene Co., Pa in 1811.

He was buried in Grove Cem., Harrison Township, Knox County, Ohio. They moved to Ohio and settled on the old Cook farm about a mile east of Martinsburg, There was only a small space cleared about the house at that time. When Mrs. Harrod was hanging out the clothes to dry one day, she heard someone running through the yard just back of her. She turned around and there was a negro. He stopped suddenly and cried out "Good Lord, Nelly Mills." Mrs. Harrod recognized him as one of her father's slaves back in Virginia. As the bloodhounds could be clearly heard, he dashed into the woods and said no more. He was caught and taken back.

xi. Thomas HARROD. Died Young

xii. Sarah HARROD was born about 1789 in Bedford Co., Pennsylvania. She died in 1835 in Harrison Co., Kentucky. Sarah Harrod is mentioned in her father's will, though an estrangement is indicated, as her father is uncertain as to whether she was living at that time, and makes certain that any of her children may not inherit from his estate if she be dead. It has been ascertained that she had removed to Kentucky about 1800, and settled in Harrison County where the heirs of her husband, Benajah Dunn, are found in Deed Book 15 pp. 421. Her husband, Benajah Dunn, probably the son of Benajah Dunn, Sr., who in 1774, sold cattle to Captain William Harrod for the Dunmore War, had died in Kentucky about 1835, his estate being settled there in January Term of Court in 1835. Sarah is not named among the heirs and it may be presumed she had died before her husband, but the names of the heirs clearly indicate the relationship. A Bible record has been sent by Mrs. Price Doyle of Murray, Kentucky.

42. Abner BROWN was born about 1710. Abner and Ebenezer brown, said to have been brothers and Paul Brown, were members of Captain Benjamin Stites' Militia Company from Morgan Township. Abner Brown received patents for two tracts of land between the land of Levi Harrod and Tenmile Creek, total of about 265 acres. His wife was Abigail Luse, daughter of Eleazer and Jemima Luse. In the Spring of 1805, Abner brown, Sr., with his brother Ebenezer, and Abner Brown Jr., removed to Knox County, Ohio, where they erected the first grist - mill, an entirely wooden structure on Delano's Run above the Martinsburg Road. The building was about ten feet square and made of rough logs, and when the stream was full of water, had no difficutly in supplying the neighborhood with its corn meal, ground in a sort of sugar trough. Abner Brown, Sr., died in Knox County, Ohio where his will was proven on October 29, 1827. The will had been made on August 28, or the same year. He was married to Abigail LUSE.

240 - TENMILE COUNTRY

THE HARRODS

No one locality can lay exclusive claim to the Harrods. They are as much a part of the Tenmile Country as they are of Kentucky James Harrod alone lived a longer period of time in Kentucky than he lived in Pennsylvania. The Tenmile was the home of William Levi and for his brief life, Samuel Harrod. Thomas and John Harrod, half brothers of James, William, Samuel and Levi, were not of the Tenmile nor of Kentucky except for brief periods of time. It is unfortunate that so much confusion has grown up concerning the history of these men. The errors that have crept into the history of these men is perhaps due to the fact, that like Daniel Boone, their contemporary and at times their companion, they were trail blazers, and were continually skirting the frontiers. Always on the trails, seldom at home, their feats made possible the security, of the border settlements. It is not surprising that their deeds have become a national folklore.

Mrs. Otis W. Swainson, now of Piedmont, California, with whom the writer has collaborated during the past ten years, is probably the best living authority on the Hai-rod Family genealogy. A descendant of Levi Harrod, she has sifted every source of material in her search to clear up the many errors previously printed. Her coming book on the Harrods should go a long way in correcting the errors. It is obvious that certain writers, who do not have the facts, have frequently tried to create them. Mrs. Swainson produces the data she has uncovered, and lets it go at that.

Mrs. John B. Mason is also printing a book on the Harrods, which will be the most readable and entertaining yet printed. Mrs. Mason has collected a trunkful of material, which she recently brought to Waynesburg, for the purpose of getting the local angle on the Harrods. She is more concerned with the story than the genealogy of the family, but her genealogy will be correct so far as she uses it.

A three way correspondence between Mrs. Swainson, Mrs. Mason and the writer of these articles, has uncovered early Harrods in New England, New Jersey, and at the head of the Chesapeake Bay, where almost invariably the name is spelled Harrod or Herrod. The name Hayward, or Harwood seldom appears in these records to connect the family with the early family of that name, which settled in Virginia and Maryland. It has been the contention of this writer that the Sergeant John Harrod, who was serving in Colonel Pfarmer's New Jersey Militia Regiment under Captain Leonard in 1715, and the man with whom we start this sketch, were the same man. (Old East New York Vol. 5. pp. 670.) This has not been proven. A

From Rachel Hentons Notebook, frequently mentioned in Harrod histories, we learn that John Harrod was the father of two sons by his first marriage. They were John and Thomas Harrod, the later named settled in North Carolina. The note book states that while John Harrod was away from home, the Indians came and burned his house, and killed his wife. The note book states this John Harrod came from England and settled in one of the New England States, and that John Harrod married again and had children by the second wife.

AND ITS PIONEER FAMILIES - 241

From here we shall quote the interview of Draper with William Harrod, Jr., born on January 10, 1773, on South Fork of Tenmile, Greene County, Pennsylvania. Draper had this interview with William Harrod, Jr., in November 1845, when visiting him near Germantown, Bracken County, Kentucky. It is remarkable for the correctness of the report of the local events, which should qualify it for the other points of the interview.

Copy of Draper Mss 37JI68

"The father of the Harrods (Thomas or Samuel, probably) came from England when a young man-married Sarah Moore, on the Shenandoah; oldest son, Samuel, born there, and then removed to the Big Cove in then Cumberland County, Penna., and there William was born on the 9th day of December 1737then Nellie (married to Voluntine House)- then James, born in 1742-then Rachel (married to George Newland) then Mary (married to Adam Newland), Levi, Sallie (never married)- then Elizabeth (married to Benjamin Davis, cousin of Anthony Wayne) and Jemima (never married.)

"William Harrod served as a sergeant on Fobers (Forbes') campaign in 1758, greatly pressed for provisions and had to kill some of the pack horses, and Harrod went out one day and killed three deer, Forbes having given permission-this was on the return to Fort Cumberland.

"Before the close of the French War, Captain Harrod was stationed at Juniata and Captain James Piper commanded at a neighboring fort. A party of Indians came and killed some men near Juniata Fort. Others with them fled and reported about fifty Indians. Harrod raised at his own and Piper's Fort, 35 men; took the trail, and overtook them in the evening, camped at the head of a hollow. Harrod's men surrounded the Indian camp, and as the day was dawning and the Indians just getting up, fired on them and killed several; the others fled without firing a gun, leaving several guns and other plunder in camp. Harrod's party returned victorious, and no depredations were committed in that region for some time.

"On the first of October 1765, Captain Harrod married Amelia Stephens, moved from the Big Cove to the Little Cove, and in 1772, removed to the Monongahela country, and settled on the south fork of Tenmile Creek.

"It was Samuel Harrod who in 1767 was with Michael Stoner hunting in Illinois *** Samuel was a great hunter, remained in the French country, killed buffalo meat and took it to New Orleans to supply the garrison, and thus remained until the spring of 1780, when he was killed at the mouth of the Tennessee by an Indian hired to do so from some pique by a French trader at Kaskaskia, whom William Harrod had apprehended and put in irons, took his store of goods and divided them among his soldiers.

"War of 1774. In the summer of 1774 Captain Harrod commanded at Ross's fort on Rough Fork of Tenmile. (Ruff's Creek) Captain Harrod aided in getting supplies for Dunmore's Army and went out with a company in the Fall of 1774. Dunmore's Treaty was made on Kinnekenic Creek, a branch of the Sciota.

" Early in 1776 and perhaps late 1775 Captain William Harrod visited Kentucky.

"Late in 1776 he was placed in command at Grave Creek and there remained the most of 1777. He was on Foreman's party, took to the hillside with Samuel Thomas and others, Foreman's men

242 - THE TENMILE COUNTRY

were fired on. Harrod and others hollowed and ran down the hill firing on the Indians. The latter fled and several swam the Ohio. One Thomas shot swimming and both the Indian and his --un sank.

"Thinks he commanded at Wheeling in 1776 and 1777.

"Aided in taking Kaskaskia-went down the Monongahela with his company in a keel boat. John Swan (Jr.) was his lieutenant.

"At the taking of Vincennes, Harrod was ordered by Clark to march and remarch around the Sugar Loaf Hill in sight of the British garrison. (Here Draper says that Harrod was not there.)

"Bowman's Campaign. William Harrod commanded a company. John Moredock was killed either here or at Pickaway in 1780, and his brother Edward killed two Indians.

"Clark's Campaign 1780-William Harrod was out-James Harrod commanded the right wing, and Col. William Harrod the left-and at the battle, Col. William killed two Indians. His cousin, Samuel Moore was killed in this battle. He had dreamed before leaving Harrodsburg that he would either be killed or wounded, but rather than remain and be considered a coward, he went along, taking bandages with him.

"Captain Harrod commanded at the Falls of the Ohio-had a town laid off there.

"During the hard winter of 17SO (3 feet of snow on the Monongahela country and the river froze over in November and continued till the last of March snow 41/2 feet deep on the mountains between Redstone and Cumberland) G, R. Clark spent a cart of his time at Jacob Vanmeter's Fort on Swan's Run. (note-This was Henry Vanmeter's Fort.)

"Swan's Fort and at Captain Harrods-Adam Rowe's family, wife and several children killed, two sons not killed; hid some pot metal, plowing irons; going down the Ohio with Captain Harrod, and Rowe would go and get his hidden articles against Harrod's advice, who saw fresh Indian signs; Rowe and Isaac Perry, a young man, went to Rowe's cabin, under the floor of which the articles were hidden, and as they recovered it, they discovered several Indians sitting down in front of the cabin eating. Several fired and shot Perry, who ran a few steps and fell. Rowe escaped and Joined Harrod, abandoned their canoe where it was tied and had to go around back water, and thus were so long in getting, to Wheeling.

"Harrod, Rowe, and Perry had left a large keel boat, in a large keel boat to Rowe's plunder, and then rejoin the keel boat. Accompanying the keel boat were other boats-a day or so after Perry was killed, this keel boat was fired upon and Mrs. Richard Swan was wounded in the shoulder.

"William Swan was Colonel of the militia of Washington County, Pennsylvania. (This should be Charles Swan). This was before Greene County was laid off. In some way William Harrod gave his vote against slavery.

"In April 1793, William Hai-rod lost his wife, about that time he commanded a block house high up on Wheeling, Creek, some 22 miles. Commanded at Fish Creek a while.

"While Harrod was at the Block House up Wheeling Creek in the Spring of 1793, perhaps in May, Captain William Enochs, with a party of men, pursued Indians that had killed two of widow Crow's daughters. About seven miles up Captina, they fell in with the enemy and a battle ensued. Captain Enoch killed all Indian, Abraham McCoun killed another. The whites were defeated with the loss of Abraham and Isaac McCoun, Abraham Enochs and John.................ines, and perhaps more. Duncan MacArthur was in

AND ITS PIONEER FAMILIES - 243

this defeat. When the party returned subsequently, the body of Abraham Enochs, (the first who was killed in the fight, he being in advance) was found, cut up and mangled. The body of one of the McCouns was not found.. Harrod had advised Captain Enochs not to follow much over the river.

"Jackson's Fort on south fork of Tenmile, was principal station in that region. Ross's, and John Antrim's (Ankrom's) on the south fork. Jacob Vanmeter's on Muddy Creek, Legg's (Clegg's) on Dunkard Creek, William Minors on Big Whitley Creek, Guthrie's on Big Whitley, John Swan's on Swan's Run, Henry Vanmeter's also on Swan's Run, Henry Enoch's at the forks of the Tenmile, (he was the father of Captain Enochs) Bell's Fort on Rough Creek and others.

"The Harrods forted at Ross's Fort in 1774, subsequently they forted at Swan's Fort, while Captain William Harrod was in Kentucky in 1780 or before.

"In the Spring of 1782 Simon Rinehart, William Brown, and one English (William) some two miles down from Jackson's Fort, while moving some merchandise on sleds were fired upon and all three killed. Vincent Brown and Michael Archer escaped to the fort, chased there.

"In July 1787 Colonel William Harrod and several others went out hunting on Fish Creek. Michael Archer, while on the way to join the hunting party, nearly a dozen miles above Jacksons Fort on Tenmile, was killed by the Indians. His body was found with his fists clenched, and full of hair, evidently had fought till the last. His dog was found lying, three days after, beside his master and very active.

"About 1782 or 1783 Caleb Linsecurn and Michael Archer, when on Laurel Run, a mile from Jackson's Fort, were surprised by the Indians. Archer beckoned Linsecum to mount their only horse, but Linsecurn was so overcome with fear that he was easily killed, Archer escaping.

"About 1783 Indians fell upon the families of Robert McClennan (McClelland) and James Archer, whose families lived in the same cabin, about three fourths of a mile from Fort Jackson. They came on a foggy morning. Eight or nine of the two families were killed, a few escaped. Jane Archer, a small girl was tomahawked and scalped, and left for dead but recovered.

"Col. William Harrod was a little short of six feet, (not more than an eighth of an inch wanting) raw-boned, about 180 pounds, dark hair and complexion. He was fond of hunting, in one day he killed eleven deer, a wolf, and a wild cat on Fishing Creek. One Fall in Kentucky, he killed 11.0 deer and sent the skins up the river. This was somewhere in the 1780s. He killed 28 bear and 75 deer on a six weeks fall hunt up on Fish Creek.

"Col. Harrod came to Kentucky in the Spring of 1795 and lived with his son William in Bracken County at the head of Locust Creek, and died October 9th 1801 after a few days illness with fever. He was buried near the present Sharon Meeting House.

"Col. James Harrod may have been out on the Forbes Campaign, dont recollect. In 1773 he explored Kentucky with several in a party. Went to Greenbriar. Next Spring, went again and settled Harrodsburg, etc.

"The elder Harrod (John) had two sons, John and Thomas, by a first wife, then married Sarah Moore. Thomas Harrod (Col. James Harrod's half brother) settled in North Carolina, and James used to go and visit him, and there very likely met Boone and others

244 - TENMILE COUNTRY

and learned of Kentucky. He was six feet, could read and write, spare, dark black hair and eyes. He (James) probably met foul play out trapping. Made his will at Washington, Kentucky, and then went out on his last trapping on the Sandy.

"Col. David Williamson boarded at William Harrod's at Big Cove. Levi Harrod was one of the pilots on the White Woman's Campaign, this about 1790 or 1791. Williamson and someone else commanded, quite a body of men. Captain William Crawford was a captain, no fighting, all horsemen. Found the Indians too strong Thomas Stokely was along.

"Captain Ezekiel Rose was wounded thru the body, a very bad one, had a silk handkerchief pulled thru the wound several times, got well and lived on Shirtee or Pigeon Creek.

"General James Ray, when a man was out plowing at Harrodsburg, and an Indian was stealing up behind him, got in the rear and shot the Indian. The man escaped to the fort and reported.

"Ben Eulen, perhaps a man killed with him, ran and jumped down from the eastern bank of the Kanawa, some 60 or 70 feet. Would have been killed but for grape vines, as it was he had his thigh broken- and perhaps an arm. Was taken to the fort at Pt. Pleasant. Had a halt in his walk when my informant saw him at Pt. Pleasant. A heavy set small man.

"James Harrod, once out hunting. on horse back, fired, horse jumped and threw him and broke his thigh. At a subsequent period he had the other broken the same way.

"Captain Jesse Pigman commanded a company at Wappatomika, in 1774, an old Indian fighter, who lived in Muddy Creek Section.

"Col. William Harrod-early in the French War, prior to Forbes Expedition. Harrod was stationed at, and this was probably his first service, and very likely in 1755, at Fort Littleton, (so his son thinks) and rather than receive the contumelious insults, he engaged in a fisticuff fight, and came out first best amid the shouts of hurrah for the widow's son.' Hence his father had deceased prior to this date." November 1845

Any person familiar with Greene County history will recognize how close this son of William Harrod was to the actual facts of our local history. He must therefore have been equally well versed in the make up of his father's family for he had full opportunity of seeing most of them during his lifetime. No other statements have appeared from any source which should be or could be more acquainted with the facts, than the record given by William Harrod, Jr. Born on Tenmile in 1773, and living there until close to 1800, where his parents, Uncle Levi, and Aunts Rachel and Mary, lived in close neighborliness to him, his information certainly was first hand. If his age did not dim his recollection of events that took place in this part of the country, then why would not his family information be equally reliable. In the face of official records, it is.

JOHN HARROD, SENIOR

The first official record we have of John Harrod, Senior, is found in Pennsylvania Colonial Records in a letter of May 1750, from Secretary Richard Peters to the Colonial governor. Secretary Peters had been sent into what is now Cumberland and adjoining counties in Pennsylvania to warn the people off the land which had not yet been purchased from the Indians. It was on this trip that the story of the "Burnt Cabins" occurred. Trader George Croghan was with Peters in the Augwick Valley where he had a home.

AND ITS PIONEER FAMILIES - 247 (245)

When the commission went to the Little Cove and Big Cove, they report that they ordered a number of persons off their improvements, including John Harrod. This was at a time when William Harrod, Jr., reports his grandfather as living in the Big Cove. It was the same locality that saw James and William Harrod begin their military service under Forbes, and where William Harrod got his first commission a few years later. John Harrod is the only one that is reported of that name and he had been there at least three years. It is in the same vicinity that John Harrod, Jr., half brother of James, William, etc., spent the last years of his life. There can be little doubt that this was the father of the famous sons. From William Harrod, Jr., we must assume that John Harrod, Sr., did not stay out long, and like many of his compeers, he returned at once where he died before 1755, as William was called the "widow's son" at that time. I was in this location that John Harrod, Sr., a hardy Frontiersman himself, fitted his sons for the future lives they were to lead. He had been a pioneers in the Shenandoah after the death of his first wife, for it was here that he met and married Sarah Moore his second wife. He could have been following the fortunes of Jost Hite, who was making the moves from New Jersey to Germantown, Pennsylvania and then into the Shenandoah about the time John Harrod, Sr., is reported in these places. We do not choose to go into the various records compiled by Mrs. Swainson and Mrs. Mason, -since we are in this case concerned more in the genealogy of the Tenmile Pioneers. It would also appear that at one time or other members of each family of sons and daughters of John Harrod, Sr., came to the Tenmile Country, and there are quite a few descendants still living there.

Children of John Harrod, Sr.

1. - Thomas Harrod, son by the first marriage, settled in North Carolina, where he died in Rutherford County in 1798. He made several trips to Kentucky, and there is evidence he visited the Tenmile Country. He owned land in Kentucky, and a dispute over this land discloses his children. They were: James Harrod, who married Elizabeth Stewart. Mary Harrod, who married Stephen Montgomery. Jane Harrod, who married William Grooms. It is to be noted that a William Grooms warranted a tract of land one farm removed from Levi Harrod in Morgan Township, Greene County, which was patented to Samuel Nyswanger. Elizabeth Harrod, married John Fauch. Leah Harrod, who married William McCallister. Lucinda Harrod. Rachel Harrod. Susannah Harrod. Hannah Harrod. John Harrod. Samuel Harrod, who married Polly Paullin.

2. - John Harrod, Jr., born in Chester County, Pennsylvania about 1734, died in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, December 26, 1781. He was known as John Harwood, and as a major in the Revolution was captured when serving in Colonel Parker's Regiment under Baron DeKalb. He was taken to Canada but after returning, his injuries made him unable to do further service, and he retired to Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He married August 5, 1758, Rachel Shepherd, who died November 10, 1806. This information and the dates of the children are from the

Rachel Henton Notebook. Rachel Henton was a descendant of this couple.

Children

1. - Sarah Harrod, born April 29, 1551.

2. - Thomas Harrod, born January 15, 1761. He removed to Western Pennsylvania and his name is in the Muddy Creek Ledger, after which he removed to Kentucky. He was killed by the Indians on Harrod's Creek, Ross County, Ohio in 1803. During the Revolution he served as a Frontier Ranger in the Bedford County, Pennsylvania, Militia, where he attained the rank of Ensign.

3. - Mary Harrod, born December 15, 1763.

4. - William Harrod, born October 1, 1765. He received a pension for his services in the Revolution while living in Scott County, Indiana in 1836. Died at Madison at the age of 82 years.

5. - Catherine Harrod, born January 14, 1767, no records.

6. - Elizabeth Harrod, born July 14, 1769, married Robert Stinson, parents of Rachel Henton.

7. - Rachel Harrod, born August 5, 1771.

8. - John Harrod, born April 3. 1773. He and his brother, Levi, went to Kentucky before 1796, and later moved to Scott County, Indiana.

9. - Levi Harrod, born August 21, 1776.

3. - Samuel Harrod, eldest son of John and Sarah (Moore) Harrod, born in the Shenandoah Valley about 1735-6. Was in the Big Cove with his father in 1750. Listed in Springhill Township

Tax lists for Bedford County, Pennsylvania in 1772. Was with Stoner on several exploration trips to the Mississippi before 1767. Never married. Killed by an Indian about 1780.

4. - Nellie Harrod, married Valentine House. Probably parents of Andrew, Levi, and Samuel House, who came to Tenmile Country. Not yet proven.

5. - William Harrod, son of John and Sarah (Moore) Harrod, was born in the Shenandoah Valley on December 9, 1737, and died in Bracken County, Kentucky, April 1, 1801. A book could easily be written about him. His son, William Harrod, Jr., In an interview with Draper, has given the highlights of the career of this soldier frontiersman. Draper is full of references to him. From boyhood to old age he served the calling of arms, and while the major part of his adult life was spent in the field, one thing to be remembered is the fact that the Tenmile Country was his home from youth to old age. He came to the Tenmile just after his marriage in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, on October 1, 1765, to Amelia Stephens. Here the most of his children were born and here his wife died In September 1793. She is probably buried on the tract "Drawl" warranted to William Harrod, December 23, 1785, but later patented to George Rex. A part of this tract now lies in the town of Jefferson. It was here that he recruited for his many campaigns, using Fort Jackson, Fort John Swan, and the fort at Redstone as a rendezvous. His children married here and at least one of them is buried here. Many of his neighbors were among those who served under him on his campaign under George Rogers Clark, perhaps the highlight of his Military career. Many Greene County families can feel justly proud that their teen-age ancestors served under this experienced commander on that campaign. It was not until after 1796,

AND ITS PIONEER FAMILIES - 245 (246)

near the close of his life, that he removed to Bracken County, Kentucky, where he died a few years later and is buried in the old Sharon Cemetery.

Children of William and Amelia (Stephens) Harrod

1. John Harrod, of whom little is known.

2. - Sarah Harrod, born August 1, 1766, died in Greene County, November 16, 1822; married William Swan, son of John and Elizabeth (Lucas) Swan. Her husband, a lad of but 16 years, served under her father on the Clark Campaign. He was born in 1762, and died December 25, 1835. Both are buried in the Swan Cemetery near Rices Landing.

3. - Samuel Harrod, born January 19, 1769, died in Bracken County, Kentucky, where he was living on September 19, 1798, when he and wife Sarah made a deed for a tract of land called "Union," originally warranted to Sarah, Henry, and Barnabas O'Neal. (Deed Book 1. pp. 198.) When the patent for this tract was granted, Samuel Harrod was included with his wife Sarah, which indicates he had married Sarah O'Neal, daughter of Barnet O'Neal, Sr. Guardians

had been appointed for these O'Neal children in Washington County Courts.

4. - Elizabeth Harrod, born April 16, 1770.

5. - William Harrod, Jr., born January 10, 1773, died in 1847. He is best known for his interview with L. C. Draper in which he gave the most authentic genealogy of the Harrod Family yet found. William Harrod, Jr., married Nancy Rice, daughter of John and Sarah (Roach) Rice. They

moved to Bracken County, Kentucky, with William Harrod. Sr., about 1796. William Harrod, Jr., signed deeds in his father's estate in Clarke County, Indiana. Known children were:

1. John Harrod.

2. Ann Harrod, who married John Poe.

3. Elizabeth Harrod, who married Daniel Kiger.

4. James Harrod, whose wife was Mary ... ......................

6. - James Harrod, who died before 1814.

7. - Rachel Harrod, who married February 13, 1796, Isaac Miranda.

6 - Colonel James Harrod, the founder of Harrodsburg, Kentucky. Books have been written about this member of the family and there is little room here for his biography. One fact not given much notice, is that he dwelt on the Tenmile for some time before leaving to settle the town that bears his name. He is in the Bedford Tax lists for 1772, for Springhill Township, as the head of a household, perhaps that of his mother and any unmarried children of Sarah (Moore) Harrod. Indications are that he spent four or five years in the Tenmile Country, or used it as his base, before making Kentucky his permanent home. A late record not used in previous biographies shows he enlisted at the age of 16 years in Captain Gavin Cochrane's Company in Colonel Boquet's Campaign, and was on that muster roll on June 7, 1760. At that age he was 5 feet 21/2 inches tall and later references in the Henry Boquet Papers indicate that he was not cut out for an officer's servant but satisfactory as a soldier. (Boquet Papers Series 21645 pp, 2.)

7. - Rachel Harrod was one of the older Harrod girls, possibly older than her brother, James. Her husband was George Newland, who went out on Boquet's Campaign under, Captain Evan

248 - THE TENMILE COUNTRY

Shelby, (Boquet Papers 21644 Vol. 2. pp. 182) and is listed in the muster roll of that company July 1759. While serving under Captain Clapham in that campaign he was taken prisoner, but on December 26, 1760, was released by the Indians and brought into Fort Pitt. He had been a member of the Pennsylvania Light Horse Regiment. (Boquet Papers 21655 pp. 103) After Boquet's Campaign the family of George Newland removed to Berkeley County, Virginia, and then a few years later settled on the Tenmile near the present town of Jefferson, where he patented a tract of 400 acres of land on March 23, 1785, under the title of "Yellow Banks," now the Riggle Farm on Stokton's Lane. This tract he arranged to sell in 1796, when he left for Bracken County, Kentucky, but he died before the completion of the transfer and his widow, through her brother, Levi Harrod, completed the deal in 1798. (Gr. Co. Deed Book 1. pp. 185.) When Benjamin Stites sold the mill site where Pollack's was later built, to Jacob Rush, and removed to the site near Fort Jackson, George Newland took ail assignment of the tract from Jacob Rush, in 1787. (Washington County Deed Book I-B-pp. 198.) Rachel Newland died in Bracken County, Kentucky, about 1811, where her will, made on August 17. 1810, was probated on October 13, 1811. Mrs. C. A. Delzeil of Cheyenne, Wyoming, sent record.

Children (Bible Record)

1. - Harrod Newland, born May 17, 1766 in Berkeley County, Virginia. His pension application states that in August 1833, at the age of 67 years, he was living in Indianapolis, but that when he was forty-nine years old he had left the Tenmile Country, where he had served in Captain Jesse Pigman's Company in the Revolution, and gone to Franklin County, Indiana. In 1829, he had settled in Marion County, later moving to Indianapolis. He patented a triangular tract of land adjoining the Yellow Banks tract of his father.

2. - George Newland, Jr., born December 18, 1768, married, April 26, 1796, Ann Day, born November 20, 1776, a daughter of Isaac and Anna (Ambrose) Day. The Newland record is copied from their Bible.

4. - Jacob Newland, born August 8, 1775.

5. - Elizabeth Newland, born January 1, 1779.

8. - Rachel Newland, born Ap He was married to Sarah MOORE in 1734 in New Jersey.

45. Sarah MOORE was born in 1712 in Baltimore, Maryland. She died in 1775 in Ten Mile. John HARROD and Sarah MOORE had the following children:

i. Nellie HARROD18. Probably parents of Andrew, Levi, and Samuel House, who came to Tenmile Country. Not yet proven.

ii. William HARROD was born on December 9, 1737 in Shenandoah Valley, Virginia. Info from Christine Smith Jan 27, 1997 He died on October 9, 1801 in Bracken Co., Kentucky. !William Harrod (12-9-1737 to 4-1-1801) son of John and Sarah Moore Harrod, born in the Schenandoah Valley, Va. On 10-1-1785 he married Amelia Stephens in Bedford Cty, Pa. He died in Bracken Cty., Ky. Bedford County, Archives Volume III edited by, James B. Whisher. son of John and Sarah (Moore) Harrod, was born in the Shenandoah Valley on December 9, 1737, and died in Bracken County, Kentucky, April 1, 1801. It was not until after 1796, near the close of his life, that he removed to Bracken County, Kentucky, where he died a few years later and is buried in the old Sharon Cemetery.

iii. Rachel HARROD was born in 1739 in Little Cove, Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania. She died on October 13, 1816. Info from Christine Smith Jan 27, 1997

iv. Mary HARROD was born in 1741. Mary Harrod, daughter of John and Sarah (Moore) Harrod, married Adam Newland, who is listed as a lax payer in the Bedford County, Pennsylvania tax lists for 1772, as head of a household. As a widow on March 4, 1785, Mary Newland got a warrant for a tract of land where a part of Jefferson, Pennsylvania, now stands, but this tract was later patented by Colonel John Heaton. She had remarried before August 20, 1789, for on that date she made a deed in which she is joined by her husband, Evan Shelby, and is described as "formerly the widow of Adam Newland." Two of her children by the former marriage are represented by guardians, one of whom is married. (Washington Co. D. B. 1-F-64.)

v. James HARROD was born in 1742 in Little Cove, Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania. He died in 1792. Colonel James Harrod, the founder of Harrodsburg, Kentucky.

SELLERSVILLE

Borough erecred from southeastern West Roskill Township, incorporated in 1874. Sellersville is a very old settlement. Among the earliest settlers were the families of Dotterer, Harr, Wambold and Derstine, all in or near the present borough, Wambold's mill and tannery is know to have been on Branch Creek (1) as early as 1730 and Derstine's mill, just below, was built the same year. (2) The founder of Sellersville, for whom it was named , was Samuel Sellers, a native of Hilltown Township, born there on his father's farm in 1765. The Sellers family in America was founded by Philips Henrich Soller, who with his wife Catharine and four children came over in the ship Goodwill, David Crockatt, master, arriving in Philadelphia September 11, 1718. He was born February 18, 1699, in Weinheim, a small town in the Palatinate, ten miles northeast of Manheim. In 1733 he bought 150 acres of land on Branch Creek and lived there until his death July 1, 1769. His remains are buried at Indian Creek Church. He left ten children. The fourth son, John, was a blacksmith and settled on a farm in Hilltown Townhip, having married Anna, daughter of William Johnson. Samuel, the founder of Sellersville and second son of John and Anna Sellers, learned the trade of his father and followed it until 1789, when he inherited his father's farm and the same year (May 30, 1789), sold it to Frederick Fluck, He had married

(2) Walter E. Baum in Two Hundred Years (1938), p 23 says "Derstines was a name given to the village cluster around the old mill established by the old family, and Clemmershteddle was a name that the village south of Branch Creek bore even within the memory of my boyhood in Sellersville. Though there is no supporting data available, I have a firm belief that Clemmershteddle was the original name of Sellersville."
