Statement made by Joseph Potts at the inquest for Lorenzo "Ren" Gano sucide. Mr. Gano had been convicted that day in court of the murder of Dwight Merriman near Cardington, Ohio. Mr Merriman was murdered Aug 1891. The inquest was held March 28, 1892 in Mt.Gilead, Ohio. Mr. Gano had been in the Morrow County, Jail since August 19, 1891. Joe was on guard duty the night of the sucide.

JOSEPH POTTS being duly sworn says I live in Mt. Gilead. I was acquainted with Lorenzo Gano. Have known him for ten or fifteen years. I have see frequently he has been confined in Jail here. He generally appeared cheerful. I have been with him alternately with Mr Jackson since the verdich was rendered, was with as a guard. I was with him from the time the Verdich was rendered till morning. About half past two o'clock Thursday morning the 12th day of March 1892 I was sitting by the stand between the cell and the stove. heard a noise in the cell. I took the light went into the cell found Gano lying on his back apparently perdectly stiff streched out, eyes wide open, and staring. When I first went in the body occurred to bounce up and down several times. arms jerking, muscles twitching, head thrown back, mouth closed tight as could be. I shook him, talked to him, felt his pulse, it appeared to be weak. He made no reply, kept staring. I worked with him perhaps five minutes. I suspicioned he had got a dose of poison, and so stated to the Sheriff whom I called immediately. He came in and looked at him, then went for Dr. James. The Dr came back with him. He was still in this condition, except he did not bounce around so much. The Dr examined him, I think he remained from one helf to three fourths of an hour. He spoke to the Dr first as he was leaving asking for something to make him sleep. Dr James relpied he could, came to the stand. gave me two pills, told me to give him one right away if he did not settle down in the course of two hours to give him the other one. I gave him one of the pills, the other one I never gave him. I nver saw the pills you have before. As soon as the Dr came in I told him I thought Gano had got a dose of poison. After a short examination he said he did not think it was anything of that kind, it was nervous prostrations, after helf an hour he went to sleep and remained so until day light. Jesse searched him as soon as he came from the court house, before this sickness occurred. I never saw the piece of steel before his death. I thought his mind was as clear as it ever was, except during these sick spells. He had no other sick spells until he died that I know of. The night prior to his death he had retired before I went in. he seemed asleep and rested until about three o'clock when he called to me. I went to his cell and asked what he wanted, he replied nothing in particular only I wake up and wanted to talk a little. He did not seem nervous but very composed talked with him about five minutes. He wanted to know if I had been in the Court Room the day before; he wanted to know what the opinion of the people was about his getting a new trial. I told him I had no opportunity of knowing. He commenced telling me if he had known before his trial what he did now, he could have made a good deal better showing. He said he hoped and believed the people would find out he ws innocent. I told him if he was innocent as he claimed it was a pity it could not be found out in time to do hime some good. The last thing he said was, he felt in his head that something would happen that he wouldn't be hung. He seemed to go to sleep till morning. When the Sheriff came to wake the boys for breakfast. I went with him to Gano's cell. The Sheriff said "Hello Ren it's time to get up for breakfast". I think he said "all right, Jesse asked him how he ws feeling>" He said he was well. The Sheriff spoke second words to him. I did not pay any attention; I came away and did not see him again until about nine o'clock in company with Mr. Jackson. Rev Lewis, the Sheriff and Dr. Case went to bring Ren to the Court Room found him as near as I can tell in the same condition as the morning after the verdict. I helped to put on his coat and vest. helped carry him to the cylinder. The Sheriff held him right up in his arms. As I went ot turn the cylinder he dropped his head and a grin came on his face, his eyes were open his mouth ws drawn down: I was in here when he was laid on the cot. After he laid on the cot I thought he drew his chin as though he tried to breathe or gasp. The Dr kind of shook him and called for water which he threw in his face. Some one said he is dead. The Dr said he is dead sure enough. I know no one disturbed his person till you came.

Signed Joseph Potts

FORMER RESIDENT MURDERS HUSBAND AT FRIEND'S HOME.

Hoy Darling Shot By Wife When Found With Woman

LIVED AT DETROIT

Victim Buried Sunday In Fredericktown

Services were held Sunday afternoon in Fredericktown for Hoy Darling, 46, who was murdered by his wife, Carrie, Thursday night at the home of a friend of Mr. Darling's, in Detroit, following a quarrel.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Darling lived in Morrow County before moving to Detroit, Mrs. Darling, whose maiden name was Carrie Potts, was born and raised in Mount Gilead. She is a niece of Mrs. A. J. Moore, of Mount Gilead. They visited here last summer.

Funderal Sunday was held in the Meredith funeral home with Rev. T. H. Kerr officiating. Burial was in Forest cemetery. Mr. Darling is survived by his wife and his mother, Mrs Florence Darling of Detroit.

COUPLE QUARRELED

An account of the fatal shooting in reprinted here from The Detroit News.

During a quarrel with his wife, who charged him with showing attentions to another woman, Hoy W. Darling, 46 years old, was wounded fatally Thursday night on the front porch of a home at 5331 Joy road. He died a few moments later of a bullet wound in the chest.

Mrs. Carrie Darling, 45, the wife, is held at Receiving Hospital on a charge of murder. There are serveral bruises on her body and physicians at the hospital say that small bones in both the neck and ankle may be fractured.

Mrs. Ada M. Noland, who lives at the Joy road address, is detained for investigation. Mrs Nolan had been friends according to Philip J. Neudeck, assistant prosecuting attorney.

TELLS OF QUARREL

Mrs. Darling told Neudeck that her husband left their home at 84 (34?) Elmhurst Avenue, Highland Park late Thursday afternoon. She said she went to Mrs. Noland's home in the evening and waited on the porch several hours. Then her husband arrived and they quarreled, she said.

"Then everything went blank", Mrs. Darling said, "I don't remember what happened, but I think he struck me."

There were no witnesses of the shooting, so far as the police have learned, but Mrs. Noland's two sons, (Gorman, 16 and John, 14) were in the house at the time.

"My brother and I had been out during the evening," Gorman said. "We got back about 10 o'clock and saw a woman on the porch. At about 11 o'clock Mr. Darling came in through the back door. I told him a woman was on the porch and he said he would go out and talk to her.

SHOT IN HEART

"A few minutes later we heard a shot. Then the woman dragged Mr. Darling into the front room and left him in the middle of the floor. She sat down and started to cry. She kept saying, "he shouldnot have hit me."

"Mother ran in a few minutes later and called a doctor."

Mrs. Nolan told Neudeck that she had seen Darling earlier in the evening, but that he left at about 8 o'clock. She said she went to visit a sister-in-law on Clarendon avenue and returned home at about 11 o'clock. As she was nearing the house she heard the shot.

The body was on the floor when Mrs. Nolan entered her home. She called Dr. William Carnochan, who notified the police. Patrolmen Albert Landers, of Petoskey station went to the home. He said Mrs. Darling was crying and incoherent when he arrived.

The patrolmen found a small pearl-handled revolver at the bottom of a laundry chute in the house. One bullet had been fired from it. Mrs. Darling later told Neudeck that she did not remember taking the revolver with her "but if it has a pearl handle it must be mine."

Mrs. Darling was hysterical at Police Headquarters and broke into sobs often as she made her statement.

"We had been married 27 years," Mrs. Darling told Neudeck. "We had been very happy. Then he got a job in the laundry at Henry Ford Hospital, where Mrs. Noland worked. About three months ago I learned that he was friendly with her.

"He was the only one I had in the world and I felt I couldn't give him up. I went to Mrs. Noland's house twice and brought him home. Once he struck me there. I tried to make them both promise that they wouldn't see each other any more.

WORKS AT FORD PLANT

"About a month" ago, my husband left the hospital and started to work at the Ford Factory. I was happy for a while but then I was almost crazy.

"He was away Wednesday night and didn't get home until 2 a. m. Thursday. He slept until 4 in the afternoon and then got up and walked out of the house. I waited until 8 o'clock and I couldn't stand it any longer. I thought I would go over to Mrs. Nolan and make one last try to keep our home together."

Mrs. Nolan told Neudeck that she lost her job at the hospital Thursday and had suspected that Mrs. Darling had caused her discharge."

"I told Mrs. Darling I wasn't going to see him any more," Mrs Nolan said, "but we decided to meet once more to settle matters. That's why he dropped in for a few moments last night. I had planned on seeing Mrs. Darling, too."

THE MORROW COUNTY SENTINEL, MT. GILEAD, OHIO THURSDAY, JULY 21, 1932

MRS HOY DARLING NOT TO BE TRIED

No Prosecution, says Assistant Following Coroner Jury's Verdict

Possibility that the Hoy Darling murder case in Detroit may be dropped without prosecution was learned here Saturday through a Detroit newspaper clipping telling the verdict of a coroner's jury. The jury returned a verdict that "Darling died of internal hemorrhages caused by "a gun shot wound received in an undetermined manner."

Hoy Darling was reported killed by his wife, the former Miss Carrie Potts, on the night of June 23, when when found him on another woman's porch, in Detroit. Both Mr. and Mrs. Darling were former Morrow County residents and had visited Mount Gilead, last summer.

The Detroit newspaper story reads as follows:

An open verdict in the death of Hoy Darling, who was fatally wounded, June 23, during an altercation with his wife, Carrie, on the porch of Mrs. Ada Noland's home at 5331 Joy road, was returned Saturday by Coroners Jury under Dr. Albert L. French, county coroner.

DEATH UNKNOWN

They jury decided that Darling died of internal hemorrhages caused by "a gun shot wound received in an undetermined manner." Chester P. O'Hara, assistant prosecutor, said there would be no prosecution.

Testimony by Mrs. Darling, Mrs Noland and a number of other witnesses left the cause of death as much a mystery as it was when Darling was shot two weeks ago.

Mrs. Darling testified that her husband had been visiting Mrs. Noland for three months. She said she and Darling were planning a picnic at Belle Isle the day of the shooting, but that Darling left to buy some cigarets and did not return.

"After a time I thought he might have gone to see Noland," she said, "i went to her home. Nobody was there, and I sat on the porch. I saw a car drive up and though I recognized my husband in it. Then Mrs. Noland came around the side of the house. I asked her if she had seen him and she said she did not know where he was.

Just then my husband came through the house to the front door. We began to argue. I woke up in the police station. I did not have a revolver and I did not shoot him. He is all I had to live for."

REVOLVER IDENTIFIED

Mrs. Darling identified a revolver found in a clothes chute in the house as one belonging to her. She said Darling had been carrying it in his car. There was no testimony to indicate this was the weapon used in the shooting.

Mrs. Noland corroborated Mrs. Darling's testimony to a large extent. She said she and Darling met at the Ford Motor Co. Laundry where both were employed, but said she had met Darling elsewhere only six or seven times. Darling came to her home to talk to her about the job from which she had been let out and they went for a ride in his car, she testified.

" I came around the house and said I had not seen him, although I knew he was entering the back door, she testified. "When he appeared and hit his wife, she started to fall backwards over a chari. Darling reached out as if to catch Her.

"Then there was a shot and he fell. I didn't see a revolver in anybody's hands at any time. Mrs. Darling helped her husband into the house and there wandered from room to room, hysterical. A doctor had arrived when the police appeared."

Mrs. Noland's two sons, Gorman and Jack, told a similar story. Detective Vincent Hoesel and other officers told of finding the revolver in the clothes chute and of the actions of the two women.

Potts Obituary: Saturday July 17, 1993 Marion Star, Marion, Ohio. Death was given as 12:08 AM July 16, but she really passed away about 11:30 PM July 15 at her home in Meeker. She was pronounced dead later at Marion General Hospital. Mom had passed a normal day and appeared to be normal during the day. Matthew James had been at her home baby sitting Brandon and Brock Potts sons of Mark and Carla Potts. Matthew had eaten dinner with mom and the boys. He went home after dinner. About 10:30 mon mentioned she was not feeling well and thought she would go to bed. Carla thought maybe she needed some help and mentioned to her if she felt worse to call her. Carla went up to bed a little later and mon called her asking for help. Mom got up and set in a chair in the front room. She was having difficulty breathing. Carla called 911 and then Cynthia. Cynthia came right down and mom appeared to pass away just after Cynthia arrived. The ambulance took mom to Marion General Hospital, Cynthia rode along in the abulance. Carla called several of the family members. She call me and I called Harold telling him of mom's problem and asked him to go the hospital. Cynthia, Mark, Stacey, Foy and Genes got to hospital, but mom was gone. Harold arrived just as the other family members were leaving. I made arrangements that night to make the trip to Ohio the next morning. I left Salt Lake City at 8:56 AM and arrived in Columbus, Ohio at approximatily 3:30PM. I rented a car from Almo and went directily to Cynthia's. Arrived at Cynthia's about 6:00 PM. Spent the evening with Cynthia and Mark. Slept that evening at Maxine Cluff's in Marion. Spent part of Saturday at Mark's and part of the day doing research at the Marion City Cemetery Office and Marion Public Library on the Family of William Leeper. Spent Saturday night at Mark's. Sunday morning was spent looking for the Cemetery in Southern Knox County were the Harrod's. Bigg's and Pipe's were buried. Didn't find the cemetery. I had left Salt Lake so fast that I had for got to bring the address. Sunday afternoon at 3PM we met at Stofchcek's Funeral Home in LaRue for the Family viewing time. The public viewing started at 4PM. One of the interesting things was that all my brothers and sisters were present at the viewing that evening. I hadn't seen Barbara Potts Stiving since Gene and Jayne's wedding. She is now living with Junior in Shelby. There was many other relatives and friends who came that I had not seen since Dad's funeral. Was able to get addresses of several family members that may be able to help me with my genealogy research. Rob and Beck arrived with their three boys late Sunday Evening from Allentown, Pennsylvania. They did not make it in time for the viewing. I met them at the Travel Lodge in Marion where we were stayed the next two nights. We went over to the Funeral Home at about 1:30 PM. There was about 60-70 people in attendance, mainly family members. I had been asked by my sisters to conduct the funeral. I conducted the funeral, Rob gave the opening prayer and I gave a short talk and Rev. Keith Waller from the Meeker United Methodist Church gave the closing prayer at the service. Rob played "O May Father". Rob dedicated the grave at the Meeker Cemetery. Their was a dinner served by members of the Meeker Church for family members and friends.
