SUPREME AND DISTRICT COURTS.


The earliest record of the supreme court to be found in the office of the clerk of common pleas for Ross county, bears date November 27, 1805. The presiding officers were: Hon. Samuel Huntington, chief judge, and Hons. William Spriggs and Daniel Symmes, associates.


The first suit was: Wilson Hunt vs. John McDougal, on writ of error, in which the action of the lower court was confirmed. The adoption of the new constitution in the above year abolished this court, and created what is now known as the district court. Since then, the following judges have presided: 1852, John L. PROBATE JUDGES.


This office was created by the new constitution adopted March 10, 1851.


The first person who was elected under its provisions, was Samuel F. McCoy who served until 1860. He was succeeded by Samuel H. Hurst who resigned in January, 1862, to become a soldier. William F. Hurst was appointed to fill vacancy until the fall election subsequent, when Nicholas Throckmorton was elected ; he was succeeded in 1865, by Thomas Walke, and he, in 1874, by the present incumbent, Benjamin F. Stone.

The first mention of this officer upon the records of the commissioners of Ross county bears date June 15, 1819, when it was "ordered that Humphrey Fullerton and A. L. Langharn, former recorders, be paid for their services." The following successors to this office are given from memory by elderly citizens who are conversant with the affairs in the court house for many years back: Samuel Taggart, Arthur O. Lucket, Josiah L. Hearn, S. D. Stratton, Henry Whisson, William Briggs and Edward Cryder, who is the present incumbent.

The record of the proceedings of the board of commissioners begins with the "March term, 1799," when a "return of the road from the town of Chillicothe to intersect the load from the falls of Paint creek to Brush creek," was received and recorded, and instructions were given to Duncan McArthur, as chief, and Thomas McDonald and Frederick Bray, as assistants, to survey said road.
