The Sager Genealogy

Tradition indicates Switzerland to have been the original homeland of this family, also that some branches of the family emigrated to Germany, that one branch descended the Rhine River and settled in the Odenwald district.

Tradition is that Church records found here indicate that Melchoir Seeger, born in Reichenbach in 1636, was the father of Johan Christian Seeger whose son, Dr. Johan George Seeger, emigrated to America, landed at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on October 5, 1737. Tradition is that he was a doctor and a man of great learning. He settled in Lancaster Colony. This colony was comprised, chiefly, of German emigrants and they were known as "Pennsylvania Dutch."

To explain the different spelling of the name: Ship recorded the name as Seger omitting one e, Johan was a forename these germans gave to all their sons; after settling in America they dropped this forename, and Johan George Seeger signed his name plain George Seger. How the name got changed to Sager we do not know, but found it so recorded in Virginia records.

George Seger was married two times, first marriage was on June 13, 1739, and is recorded in the Emanuel Lutheran Church at Brickerville, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Rev. John Casper Stoever was the paster. He records are handwritten and in German script. They are old, faded, and from much handling have become badly worn and difficult to decipher. This is why we give two names for George's first wife. Some translate it as Anna Maria Kloter, others claim it Clotin. No record was found of his second marriage, but we learn from his will that she was a widow, first name was Catherina.

Records in Lancaster, County, show that George paid taxes on a fam comprised of 70 acres located in Rapho Township. He died there in March or April 1767. He left a will which is recorded in Book C, Vol 1, page 72, Lancaster records.

George Seger and Anna Maria Koter or Clotin were the parents of two children who are of the first generation to be born in America.
