HISTORY OF AUGLAIZE COUNTY - 485 CHAPTER XIV MILITARY ANNALS. The military activities carried on in the territory now included within the confines of Auglaize county during the progress of the War of 1812 have been set out in that section of this work devoted to the days of Indian occupancy and of the early, settlement of the county, where also is carried the story of the campaigns carried on here during the time of the earlier Indian wars Among the pioneers of this county were quite a number of men who had participated in the War of 1812 and there also were among these pioneers several who had taken part in the Revolutionary war and whose last days were spent here. So far as is known this latter list was confined to five men, Peter Sunderland, John Ridley, William Richardson, William Rogers and William Taylor, who had taken up their residence here following the opening of the lands in this region to settlement. Peter Sunderland came to Ohio in 1817, he then being eighty years of age, and located at Dayton, whence in 1822, as has been set out elsewhere, he came up here with his son, Dye Sunderland, and settled in the Ft Amanda neighborhood, where he died five years later at the age of ninety years. John Ridley, a native of Maine, lived to the great age of 106 years and his last days were spent in the home of his son, John, at Waynesfield, where he died in 1867. It has been written of him that "he was never known to be sick, and died of old age." William Richardson, who was a boy soldier during the Revolution and who later served as a soldier of the War of 1812, was for years a resident of this county, making his home with the family of his son, Elder Daniel L. Richardson, in Logan township, but the last twenty years of his life were spent in Paulding county, where he lived to the great age of 109 years. 486 - HISTORY OF AUGLAIZE COUNTY William Richardson was a cousin of "Mad Anthony" Wayne, whose campaigns throughout this region had carried terror to the hearts of the Indians, the respective mothers of the two having been sisters. It is said that Richardson was married seven times. One of his wives, Catherine Millhouse, was a sister of Barbara Dillbone, who with her husband had been murdered by three Shawnees. Richardson avenged this murder by tracking down and killing the redskins, getting two of them in the vicinity of Piqua and the third down the Auglaize, about two miles north of where Buckland is located. It has been written of Richardson that he was a man of powerful physique and great endurance and that "he would rather fight than eat," this pugilistic propensity gaining for him the local sobriquet of "Rowdy" Richardson. He died in 1874. It is also said of William Richardson that during the early settlement period, owing to his great physical strength and fearlessness, he was pressed into service by the law-abiding settlers to do the public flogging at Wapakoneta for certain offenses committed and that in consequence he became a terror to all local evil doers. The person found guilty of an offense against the well being of the community was given so many lashes across the bare back, according to the nature of the offense, with a long whip. Frequently the blood would flow freely and the culprit would beg for mercy. Some persons might think this mode of punishment brutal, but the law-abiding settlers considered it the most merciful as well as the most effective way of punishing criminals that could be devised to meet the conditions of the time and place, when courts were remote and "lock-ups" were inadequate. They were compelled to protect themselves against the criminal class and it was up to them to devise an effective mode of punishment. It is said that those who were flogged by the efficient "Rowdy" Richardson either left the country or, if they remained, were good citizens ever afterward. HISTORY OF AUGLAIZE COUNTY - 487 VETERANS OF THE WAR OF 1812. According to the older chronicles, the following is the roster of the veterans of the War of 1812 who made their homes in this county following the opening of the lands to settlement : Isaac Bogart, Reuben Brackney, William Brackney, Joseph Brown, William Craft, John Elliott, James Gibbs, John Hardin, Aaron Howell, Bennett W. Langley, Robert Linzee, James Maran, Shadrach Montgomery, Gideon Mott, Elisha Noble, William Richardson, William Ridley, William Ryan, Robert Skinner, Edward Tissue, George Whetstone, Jacob Whiteman and Henry Woolery. By the time the Black Hawk war came on in 1832 there was sufficient permanent settlement here to arouse alarm among the settlers in face of a possible uprising of the redskins still remaining here, but there was no cause for alarm as the Indians of this region were not particularly concerned in the affairs of their red brothers farther west and the flurry passed off without special local incident. Ohio's quota in that war was soon filled from the older settlements and so far as known there was no recruiting for this service in the territory now comprised within this county, at least the older chronicles make no mention of it. There may have been some among the adventurous souls who then were settling here who responded to the call to arms, but if so their names have not been preserved in that connection. Though there was considerable settlement here by the time the Mexican war broke out in 1846, all the lands of value here having been taken up by that time and the territory now included within the county having a population of right around 10,000, Auglaize county had not yet come into its own as a civic entity and was not erected until two years later, in 1848, the year in which the war closed. The call to arms for that war elicited a considerable local response, quite a few going out with the 1st Ohio, others with the 2d and another detachment with the 4th. Those who enlisted from this region in this behalf, according to the older chronicles, were as fol- 488 - HISTORY OF AUGLAIZE COUNTY lows James Basil, John Bauemel, Samuel Brewer, Joseph Brockert, Michael Busch, John Evans, Andrew Fisher, William Focht, W. And then thirteen years later, in April, 1861, came the great Civil war or the war of the rebellion of the Southern states. The only newspaper published in Auglaize county during the period of the Civil war was the Auglaize Democrat, at Wapakoneta, the county seat. In the issue of this paper of date April 22, 1861, under the heading "The Union Forever—Auglaize Responds," there is the following account of the manner in which the call to arms was being met here: "Our usually quiet village presents quite a warlike appearance. On Saturday last notice was given that a meeting would be held on Monday evening for the purpose of raising a company of volunteers. Early Monday morning the cannon began to boom and by 10 o'clock our town was one solid mass of people. Court being in session, Judge Metcalf, after opening, made a patriotic speech and adjourned until May 22. The crowd then proceeded to the depot and gave the Lima company, who passed through, a parting salute. "In the evening the meeting was held at the court house and speeches were made by Messrs Andrews, Walkup, Craig and others and the call then was made for volunteers. The call was nobly responded to—some sixty coming forward and signing the roll and taking the oath. "Auglaize is nobly responding to the call for volunteers. She is turning out the best of her sons—men who will stand HISTORY OF AUGLAIZE COUNTY - 489 by the flag of their country to the last. They are men whom we look upon with pride." And the feeling of pride thus expressed in behalf of the soldiers of the Union has never abated, but indeed has increased with the passing of the years and will continue to find expression so long as there remains one of the now rapidly dwindling representatives of the hosts which went forward at the call of arms in defense of the Union in those dark days more than half a century ago, and after all are gone will still find perpetual expression in the noble monuments that everywhere over the land are being erected to the memory of the deeds they nobly performed. Following the response of the initial volunteers above noted, others came as the days passed and the urgency of the nation's need became personally apparent. Recruiting offices were maintained in the county, manned by officers from Camps Vance, Cleveland, Chase, Troy and Lima, and before the close of the war more than 1,100 men from this county had entered the service of the army. A STORY THAT NEVER CAN BE TOLD. In the nature of things this brief review cannot purport to be a complete history of the Civil war period in A uglaize county, the limitations of this work prohibiting. A volume in itself could be written on the activities of that period. Regimental histories and the records of the adjutant general's office cover the stories of field service. The story of home service never has been, perhaps never can be, adequately told. That is a tale written on the hearts of those who had to participate and inspired indeed would be the pen that could present in all its poignancy of detail the heartbreaking strain of those days of stress. Here is a theme that might well attract the pen of some one here at home with a proper sense of the historical value of homely, everyday events. The thesis may yet be written. Handled properly it would be wonderfully illuminating, wonderfully interesting. 490 - HISTORY OF AUGLAIZE COUNTY Suffice it to say that in the main Auglaize county acquitted itself aright in every responsibility arising out of that period. Unhappily, and it is a matter of bitter memory even yet, there was not always complete accord. Even as in many Northern communities, there were some few who sympathized with the cause of the rebellion and certain neighborhood dissensions thus created have not been forgotten. But this hardly is the place to go deeply into that—another story that in its entirety would require a separate volume, should any one now care to sift the tale and set it out for posterity. OFFICIAL WORK OF SOLDIER RELIEF. The journal of the board of commissioners for Auglaize county carries in brief official memoranda the story of public relief designed to mitigate somewhat the pressing need of such families of the soldiers in the field as might be suffering by reason of the temporary withdrawal of the mainstay of the family, but this is only a partial record of such relief. The local organizations, the noble women's relief corps and similar associations of amelioration, did as much in their quiet and effective way--a self-sacrificing service ofttimes as heroic as the more spectacular service rendered in the field. All had their shoulders to the wheel in this time of the Nation's need. The commissioners' journal as of June 18, 1861, sets out as follows the manner in which this relief work officially was inaugurated: "The board this day appointed A. H. Trimble and M. W. Smith a central committee for the county to receive reports and to disburse funds to the different township committees, appropriated for the relief of the families of volunteers." Alexander H. Trimble was probate judge at that time and Marmaduke W. Smith was auditor. In that same month, under the provisions of a special act of the Legislature, the commissioners had levied a tax of one- half mill upon the taxable property of the county to meet the necessary relief expenditures, and a fund thus was created to meet all the more pressing needs arising out of the situation. HISTORY OF AUGLAIZE COUNTY - 491 In the journal of that same date it also is noted that "the board also appointed the following township committees : Salem township, A. J. Pickerel!; Noble township, Nicholas Brewer; St. Marys township, A. H. Dieker ; German township, Christian Smith; Jackson township, J. P. Schmieder; Logan township, Russell Berryman; Moulton township, N. A. Murdock ; Washington township, Jesse Roberts ; Duchouquet township, J. B. Craig; Pusheta township, Lawrence Singertingerr; Clay township, Arthur Bitler ; Wayne township, Harris Wells; Goshen township, Sampson Buffenberger." And then came this notation: "The county central committee were further ordered to apportion the relief funds to the different townships, proportionate to the number of families in each requiring aid." And thus the work of public relief to the families of soldiers began, and the work was maintained so long as the need continued. 'Under the operation of the law this fund has been available during all the years since the war and as occasion arises is still drawn upon, disbursements in that behalf in this county during the past fiscal year having been near 82,000. The county also provides a room in the court house for the local post of the Grand Army of the Republic. The local post at the county seat has a present membership of fifty-three. Nathan Kerst, the commander, has held that post for many years. ROSTER OF SOLDIERS OF THE CIVIL WAR. Forty years and more ago there was compiled a service record of the soldiers from this county who had participated in the cause of the Union during the Civil war and from that record in the older chronicles the following roster is taken, Auglaize county's honor roll: -A- William Abeler Adam Accuntius George Adam Harvey Adams George W. HISTORY OF AUGLAIZE COUNTY - 499 THE SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR. And then in 1898 came on the war with Spain, that brief but eventful war which aroused in the American mind a new conception of world obligation and placed this nation in a new position in the forefront of world affairs. At that time Auglaize county had a company of the Ohio National Guard, a well organized and well equipped unit of the state military outfit, under the command of Capt. John G. Hoegner, with its armory at Wapakoneta. This company was automatically carried forward into the federal service following the declaration of war on April 21, 1898, and was ordered to rendezvous at Kenton, where its members were enrolled for service on April 25. Four days later they were ordered to the general rendezvous for Ohio troops at Camp Bushnell at Columbus and went into camp at that place on April 29, and on May 10 the company was mustered into the volunteer service of the United States army as Company L of the 2d Ohio regiment, United States Volunteer Infantry. On that same date this regiment was ordered to Camp George H. Thomas (Chickamauga Park, Georgia), where it was brigaded with the 1st Pennsylvania and the 14th Minnesota as the 3rd Brigade, 2d Division. During the time of its stay at this general rendezvous this regiment received instruction in target practice and some further training and on August 28 received orders to move with the brigade to Knoxville, Tenn., where it remained at Camp Poland until November 15, when it was ordered to Camp Torrence, Macon, Ga., where it was under waiting orders when the war came to an end, December 10, 1898. Two months later, February 10, 1899, it was mustered out of service at Macon. The official muster roll of Company L (Wapakoneta), from the History of the Ohio National Guard, follows : John G. Hoegner, captain; Charles 0. Brokaw, first lieutenant ; Roy E. Layton, second lieutenant ; William M. Linder, Frank L. Snyder, Wilbur Dingler, Miller English, George W. Berry and Walter H. On Monday evening following a reception and banquet was tendered the homecoming soldiers by the ladies of the city at the court house, the evening entertainment concluding with a dance at the city hall. In its story of the homecoming, the Republican observed that "it is fitting that mention should be made of the splendid showing of this company as a part of the 2d regiment, and the perfect harmony that prevailed among officers and men. The company has always been regarded as one of the star companies of the `star' regiment of Ohio. Many of the boys have been detailed on special duty as a recognition of their ability and have contributed to raise the standard of intelligence and soldierly bearing up to the highest and they may well be proud of having served in Company L. * * * The men are true examples of the brand of America's soldiers. * * * They came home without having heard the hum of bullets, but with a consciousness of having done the duty assigned them and no one will doubt that if it had been a part of their duty to take San Juan Hill it would be as securely held as they now hold the hearts of our citizens." THE WAR OF 1917 OR WORLD WAR. And then in the spring of 1917, nearly twenty years after the Spanish-American war, came America's participation in the world war, or as the historical branch of the United States War Department calls it, the War of 1917, and in this war Auglaize county did its part, even as it had rendered full service in the preceding wars in which the Nation had be- 502 - HISTORY OF AUGLAIZE COUNTY come engaged. The story of that war is too recent a thing to require extended review here. Many histories of the war have been and are being written and the story is still unfolding. It will require the perspective of another generation to set the tale out aright. Since the summer of 1914 the chief nations of Europe had been in armed conflict, beginning with the declaration of war by the Central powers (Germany and Austria-Hungary) against Serbia on July 28 of that year. This was the flame that ignited the powder magazine. In the first week of August the Central powers declared war also against Russia, France and Belgium, and with the invasion of the latter country by Germany, Britain on August 4 declared war against the Central powers and entered the conflict. In that same month Montenegro and Japan took a part in what by that time was coming to be a world war ; in the next spring (1915) Italy entered the conflict against the Central powers, San Marino followed a month later and then Portugal, Roumania and Greece, the latter coming in in November, 1916. Meanwhile American interests were becoming involved in the general world conflagration and on April 6, 1917, the United States declared war against Germany and entered the conflict in association with the other powers that were in opposition to Germany and Austro-Hungary. Before the end of 1917 Panama, Cuba, Siam, Liberia, China and Brazil also had declared war against the Central powers and in 1918 Guatemala, Nicaragua, Hayti and Honduras had taken similar action, so that by the time the war came to an end with the signing of the armistice on November 11, 1918, no fewer that twenty-three nations were associated or allied in the war against the Central Powers, twenty-five nations thus having been involved in dreadful conflict, the duration of which from the active beginning of hostilities in August, 1914, to Armistice day in 1918 was four years, three months and seven days. The duration of the American participation in the war was one year, seven months and five days, during which time no fewer than forty-two divisions of troops had been sent abroad HISTORY OF AUGLAIZE COUNTY - 503 and the army had been raised to 4,000,000. American army casualties in the war totaled 302,612, with deaths numbering 77,118. Ohio's share in these casualties amounted to 16,007, with deaths numbering 4,082, to which latter number Auglaize county contributed thirty-nine to the "gold star" roster of this county, as follows: William S. Allen August Bornhorst Charles H. Cook Charles A. Crist Waverly E. Crites David A. Fisher Carl B. Graessle Oscar Havermehl Ralph Hineman Harold J. Ice Curt Edgar Ihle Vernon Keiber William H. Kipp Frederick C. Klute Benjamin Koetter Robert E. Langhorst James N. Latimer Dewey Lewis Dewey Linn Guy Locke Urban J. McFarland Ralph M. Morris Earl Munch Ralph R. Naus, Cyrus Reed Herman Reed Andrew J. Reineke Frank Rostorfer Edwin J. Schoonover Walter Schulte Leo J. H. Silk Herman H. Soelman Walter E. Spees Wilbert Stonerock Fred Sullivan Ferrell Swink Joseph Thobe Alfred J. Tobens Thomas J. Weaver LOCAL ACTIVITIES OF THE WORLD WAR. Auglaize county's participation in the activities attendant on this war was vigorous and continous. Every duty laid upon the county was faithfully performed and in both man and money power she rendered all that was required and more, for in addition to the large number of men called to service under the operation of the selective service act many volunteers went forward into the army from here and in all calls for money, either in loans to the Government or in the various "drives" for funds for relief organizations, her quota invariably was oversubscribed, so that it may be said that from that fateful day in April, 1917, when war was declared, to the joyous day in November of the next year, when by the signing of the armistice the struggle was brought to a close, Auglaize county undeniably was at war. Unhappily, and in a review of this sort the fact can not be overlooked, there were here and there over the county a few instances of reluctant or less than wholehearted participation. On Armistice day, when the joyous population was 504 - HISTORY OF AUGLAIZE COUNTY celebrating some of these reluctant ones were compelled somewhat painfully to acknowledge the unpopularity of their attitude. Regarding that celebration, the Wapakoneta News commented thus on the manner in which the news of the cessation of hostilities was received at the county seat, similar manifestations of joy of course being noted throughout all parts of the county: "Wapakoneta laid aside her dignity Monday, day and evening, and gave vent to its enthusiasm over the signing of the armistice by Germany and the cessation of hostilities in a manner that betokened the fact that the city is well nigh 100 percent American. * * * It was one glorious night of joy. It was a delirium of patriotic fervor, martial music, band music, the rattle of firearms, the yells of exultation of the celebrants, the cheers of the crowds—it was wonderful," and much more along that line. In the corridor of the Auglaize county court house there is a bronze tablet carrying the following inscription: "W. S. S.—In recognition of the patriotism of the people of Auglaize county who oversubscribed their War Savings Quota in 1918 this tablet is erected by the Ohio War Savings committee." Charles F. Herbst, of Wapakoneta, was chairman of the War Savings committee in this county. The quota for Auglaize county in the War Savings "drive" was $625,700 and the sales of the War Savings stamps in the county aggregated $629,800. It was so also with the Liberty Loan calls upon the unstinted patriotism of the people of the county. The quotas apportioned to this county in the earlier of these loans, the First, the Second and the Third, were absorbed by the banks of the county, which took over the bonds in amounts proportionate to their respective resources and these then were redistributed throughout the county through the ordinary channels of distribution. When the Fourth Liberty loan came on, however, in the fall of 1918, the quota for this county was such that it became necessary to organize a "drive" such as had become a familiar and popular form of patriotic activity throughout the country, so that all might have a hand in the HISTORY OF AUGLAIZE COUNTY - 505 absorption of bonds apportioned to this county, the county's quota on this loan having been fixed at $1,389,700. The county was organized down to the city ward and township precinct units, with Otto J. Boesel, of Wapakoneta, as county chairman and Theo H. Tangeman, also of that city, as secretary, and the drive began, with the result that this loan also was oversubscribed, the amount of bonds sold aggregating $1,390,190. When the Fifth or "Victory" loan, the last in the great series, came on in May, 1919, this same committee was continued and another drive began. This loan also was oversubscribed by the people of the county, the quota for the county having been $1,128,200 and the amount subscribed, $1,168,350. ACTIVITIES OF THE RED CROSS SOCIETY. In the beneficent Red Cross movement incident to the war, equally generous and liberal support also was given by the people of the county. For convenience and for the better organization of the units comprising the "drives" in this behalf, the county was divided into two chapters of the Red Cross Society, one for the western part of the county, with St. Marys as the center of activities, and the other for the eastern part of the county, with Wapakoneta as the center. This movement was inaugurated on July 1, 1917, and the latter or eastern chapter was organized by the election of J. H. Goeke as chairman; Henry Moser, vice chairman; C. W. Timmermeister, secretary, and Alice Wilson, treasurer. Mr. Goeke after awhile moved from the county and Theo H. Tangeman succeeded him as chairman and about the same time Miss Wilson was succeeded as treasurer by Malcolm Baxter, Mr. Moser and Mr. Timmermeister retaining their respective positions, and this organization has been maintained since the war. At the "peak" of the movement in this county the Eastern Auglaize chapter of the American Red Cross numbered 3,300 members, many of whom have annually renewed their membership since the war. 506 - HISTORY OF AUGLAIZE COUNTY From the time of its organization on July 1, 1917, up to January 1, 1920, the acute need of its war activities then being over, this chapter received from subscribers the sum of $19,614.91 from which disbursements were made totaling $13,862.38, leaving a balance as of the latter date of $5,752.53 as a working fund for the normal and continuing activities of the chapter. During the period of the war each community in the county also maintained a "war chest," these local activities being carried on with the several townships as units. As an example of the work thus carried on in this behalf, in the way of general relief, the Duchouquet township war chest, with 1,487 members raised $23,338.33. Its disbursements aggregated in general distribution $18,947.55, leaving a balance of $4,390, which was turned over to the American Legion. The Western Auglaize chapter of the American Red Cross, with headquarters at St. Marys, was organized with the following officers : Chairman, C. R. Backus ; secretary, Hobart Scott ; treasurer, H. G. McLain. At the "peak" of the activities of this chapter during the war period, the membership totaled more than 2,000. Following the conclusion of the war the chapter presented to all "gold star" households within that district memorial brassards commemorative of the supreme sacrifice rendered by representatives of these respective households. Since the war the chapter has been maintained, a continuing influence for good in the community, and the present (1922) officers are C. C. McBroom, chairman, David Armstrong, Jr., secretary, and H. G. McLain, treasurer. OPERATIONS OF THE DRAFT BOARD. The necessity in this war of raising a great national army without delay, systematically and with an orderly regard for absolute fairness to all in the selective operation, brought into being the national selective service law by which every eligible person in the country would be brought under the direction of county draft boards created for that purpose and selections there made by equitable processes for army service. Up- HISTORY OF AUGLAIZE COUNTY - 507 on the creation of the draft board for Auglaize county, James W. Shockey, a veteran of the Spanish-American war and former sheriff of the county, was made chairman of the board, the other members being G. W. Hassenier and Dr. E. F. Heffner. W. C. Davis, former postmaster, volunteer secretary of the board, later was joined in secretarial duty by Gilbert Kreitzer, assigned from the army, and Grace Shawber and Marguerite Krein rendered service to the board as stenographers and clerks. Under the operation of this law all eligible persons were required to register for possible army service, subject to the call of the board in numerical order, this numerical order having been based upon an ingenious "lot" system operated in Washington and automatically and systematically covering the entire country. The first registration of eligibles was carried out in June, 1917, and in this county the number registering was as follows : In the first class, 684; second class, 129; third class, 116; fourth class, 1,084, and fifth class, 222, or a total of 2,237. In the registration of June-August, same year, there were registered in the county 150 persons in class one, 23 in class two, 9 in class three, 23 in class four and 36 in class five, or a total of 241. The third registration in the following September brought out 644 in class one, 4 in class two, 19 in class three, 716 in class four and 31 in class five, or a total of 1,434. In the registration of boys eighteen years of age, there were 271 in class one, 1 in class four and 1 in class five, a total of 273, the whole of the registration for service in the county reaching a grand total of 5,941 persons. Out of this list there were inducted into service under the operation of the selective service law 799 men. Of these, 149 were inducted prior to December 15, 1917, and 563 after that date. Seventy-seven of those registering and answering the prescribed questionnaires did not wait for the expected call in the sequence of their respective numerical orders, but enlisted and got into the service without further ado in the matter. Company K of the 2nd regiment (infantry), Ohio National Guard, at St. Marys automatically went forward into service and was federalized for duty in the National army. 508 - HISTORY OF AUGLAIZE COUNTY ROSTER OF SERVICE MEN. In the very nature of things it will perhaps be impossible ever to work out a complete and authentic roster of the men from this county who rendered service in the World war. Quite a number it is known enlisted for service upon the first call to arms and got into the army before the selective service law became operative, but this is an indeterminate number and may never be definitely checked up. The county council of the American Legion is seeking through the several posts of the Legion to make up a list of all former service men accredited to this county and in time may accomplish this. From the list already in hand in this connection and from the soldiers' discharge record book in the county recorder's office and the records of the local Red Cross the following names are presented as an incomplete roster of the men from this county who rendered service in that great war : |

LOCAL UNIT OF THE OHIO NATIONAL GUARD. For some years prior to the World war Auglaize county had a well equipped company of the Ohio National Guard— old Company K of the 2d infantry regiment, stationed at St. Marys. When the flurry on the Mexican border in 1916 demanded a demonstration on the part of the United States, with the dispatch of a military force over the border, Company K was federalized and became a part of this expedition, serving thus from September, 1916, to March, 1917. It was Guard and thus was an organized unit when this country took a hand in the World war a month later. Company K mustered out of the Federal service at Ft. Sheridan and re- stored to its former status as a unit in the Ohio National again was federalized and mobilized at Camp Sheridan, where it became Company B of the 146th regiment of the 37th Division, National army, and on May 15, 1918, was transferred to Camp Lee (Va.), whence a month later it sailed with this division for France, arriving at Brest on June 22, 1918. A week later this division was assigned to service in the Beaumont sector and on July 25 took over the front lines in the Bacarat sector, remaining there until September 12 when it went into action in the Argonne drive and on September 26 took part in the Avacourt engagement. It then captured Montfaucon, where it remained until October 1, when it was sent to the St. Mihiel sector, holding there the front from October 4 to October 14, when it was relieved and sent into Belgium, where it took part in the Ypres campaign and in the Lys first and second offensives, and was there when the armistice was signed on November 11. This company, with the division to which it was attached, sailed for the United States HISTORY OF AUGLAIZE COUNTY - 519 on March 13, 1919, and on March 31 was sent to Camp Dix and thence to Camp Sherman (Chillicothe, Ohio), where it was discharged on April 13, having paraded enroute at Clinton, Akron and Columbus. Among the officers of old Company K was Lieutenant Emil F. Marx, of St. Marys, who had followed its fortunes both in Mexico and overseas, as above set out, and who upon his return to St. Marys immediately set about in a movement looking to the reorganization of a company of the National Guard at that place. He found plenty of willing volunteers and on June 22, 1919, the new company was mustered in as Company K of the 148th regiment (infantry), 37th Division, United States National Guard of Ohio, under the new National Guard law, with Captain Marx commanding. On March 1, 1921, Captain Marx was promoted to the rank of major. Company K now (1922) has eighty men and is officered as follows : Captain, Arnold F. Ruher ; first lieutenant, Thomas J. Needles; second lieutenant, Joseph E. Walsh. A medical detachment of the 148th regiment also is stationed at St. Marys, this detachment having thirty-four men and three officers, these latter being Frank E. Ayers, captain; George M. Raudebaugh, captain, and Ivan W. Wright, first lieutenant. With the reorganization of Company K, under the new law, the people of St. Marys united in a movement to procure for the city an adequate armory and in due time there was erected a handsome armory building overlooking Memorial park, which serves not only as an armory but as a much needed and very useful community house. This armory was erected at a cost of $59,000, of which $6,000 was raised by the people of the town and $4,000 was provided by the St. Marys Community Welfare Association, which also donated the ground, the remainder of the expense being assumed by the state. The building, which was designed in accordance with approved official plans, is fire proof and is provided with a room for the meetings of the local post of the Grand Army of the Republic and rooms for the company club and canteen. 520 - HISTORY OF AUGLAIZE COUNTY The drill floor is 50 by 100 feet in dimension and carries equipment for basket ball and other indoor athletics. When this armory movement was projected Roy E. Layton, of Wapakoneta, a veteran of the Spanish-American war, was adjutant general and director of state armories and he gave to the building his close personal attention. He now is judge advocate general of the 37th Division. THE AMERICAN LEGION. There are American Legion posts at Wapakoneta, St. Marys, New Bremen, Minster, Waynefield and New Knoxville, all live, alert organizations banded together under a general county council of posts, all members of which not only are alertly interested in the common cause of the ex-service men but in the general principles of the patriotic order, whose constitution is based upon the declaration that "for God and country we associate ourselves together for the following purposes: To uphold and defend the constitution of the United States of America; to maintain law and order; to foster and perpetuate a 100 per cent Americanism; to preserve the memories and incidents of the Great War; to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state and nation; to combat autocracy of both the classes and the masses; to make Right the master of Might; to promote peace and good will on earth; to safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom and democracy; to consecrate and sanctify our comradeship by our devotion to mutual helpfulness." In the spring of 1922 Auglaize Post, No. 330, at Wapakoneta bought a lot on Blackhoof street just south of the river bridge and adopted the plans for a memorial home for the post, the same to combine the several purposes of a meeting place for the post, a community center at the county seat and an athletic auditorium. This post was organized in December, 1919, and Anthony E. Shaw was elected first post commander ; Donnet Chiesa, vice commander ; Clyde Haman, adjutant; Carl Abe, finance officer; Dana House, historian, and HISTORY OF AUGLAIZE COUNTY - 521 Cletus Zofkie, chaplain. Dr. George B. Faulder was elected commander for 1921 and Neal W. Shaw is the present (1922) commander of the post, which has an active membership of more than two hundred, a gradual growth from the sixty-six charter members. |
