THE MARION STAR; OCTOBER 2, 1905 Mr. Isaac Baker was on his way home in a wagon and was crossing the Pennsylvania Tracks this morning when he was struck by the train. Isaac Baker, aged thirty years, a farmer, residing northwest of the city on the Henry True farm, was struck by Southbound, No. 475 at a crossing near the Central Ohio Stone and Lime Company's plant and fatally hurt, this morning at 10 o'clock. Baker was on his way home when the accident happened. Conductor W.R. Masters of Columbus states that his engineer blew his whistle several times, but Baker did not seem to notice it and drove directly upon the track. The rain was falling and Baker set in his wagon with his head down as if to protect himself as much as possible from the rain. When the engine plowed into the wagon Baker was hurled about twenty feet to one side. One of the horses was so badly hurt that it was shot by Conductor Masters. The wagon was wrecked. The trainmen placed the injured man on a flat car and brought him to the Silver St. Crossing of the Erie, where a telephone call sent in for Hess & Kirkendall's ambulance. He was removed to the City Hospital. Where it developed that his ribs had been crushed and was hurt materially. Besides being crushed about the ribs and chest, Baker suffered two fractures of the skull, it being necessary in removing the bone to take out a portion of the brain. Dr. A. Rhu performed the operation.

OCTOBER 3, 1905 With tear-dimmed eyes and aching heart a little women sat in the lobby of the City Hospital all of Monday afternoon and late into the night. Every foot-step leading to the sick rooms above caused her to turn and look anxiously toward the door. She was waiting for some word that her husband, Isaac Baker, who was struck by a southbound Pennsylvania frieght train, Monday morning, had regained consciousness. But her hopes were never realized, for he died at 11 o'clock Monday night without return of consciousness. From the time the injured man was brought into the hospital little hope was entertained for his recovery. In two places the skull had been broken and crushed into the brain. Dr. A. Rhu, physician and surgeon for the Pennsylvania Railroad, together with the assistance of the entire hospital corps, quickly had the man stripped and on the operating table. The broken skull was taken from the brain and with it a portion of the brain. "He had one chance out of a thousand," the surgeon said when it was all over. Up until 9 o'clock Monday night Baker's pluse and temperature were favorable, when there was a sudden change and he slowly sank into death. Isaac Baker was hard-working, honest, upright young man, well liked by everybody. Besides his wife he leaves four children, Marie, Serg, Leone, and Simon, the last being a baby.
