The Biggs Family

The Census for Washington County, Pennsylvania, shows a widow, Abigail Biggs, living on the land between Abner Brown, Sr., and Abner Brown Jr., in what is now Morgan Township, Greene County. She was the widow of Captain John Biggs, who was captured and burned at stake on the Crawford Expedition. It is thought that she was a daughter of Abner Brown Sr., whose wife was Abaigail Luse.

Captain John Biggs, born December 27, 1851, son of Benjamin Biggs, wa appointed a Lieutenant of militia at the first session of the Virginia Court at Blacks Cabin on Short Creek, Ohio County, in January 1777, and took an active part in the defense of the frontiers. He was a frequent visitor to the Tenmile Country where his wife's people had settled. He was chosen one of the captains at Mingo Bottoms on the Sandusky Expedition and was captured and burned at the stake. He had performed with outstanding officer who had been badly injured, a fact that may have hastened the death of Captain Biggs, for both he and the officer whom he had were murdered before the Colonel. The story of his death was told by Dr. Knight. At the time of his death in June 1782, it is not likely that Captain John Biggs was father of more than five or six children, and certainly not nine as given by one of the Ohio historians. After the death of Captain John Biggs, his wife, Abigail, returned to her people on the Tenmile living on land of Abner Brown, Sr., adjoining the land of Levi Harrod. As her children went to Knox County, Ohio about 1804, it is most likely that she went with them to that place. Page 258 He was married to Abigail BROWN on Oct 24 1770 in Southold, Suffolk, NY.

Levi Harrod Sr lived in Waynesburg until 1811 when he moved to Knox County, to join his children and grandchildren. He was in both Va and Pa militias. 10. Abner BROWN was born about 1710. Abner and Ebenezer brown, said to have been brothers and Paul Brown, were members of Captain Benjamin Stites' Militia Company from Morgan Township. Abner Brown received patents for two tracts of land between the land of Levi Harrod and Tenmile Creek, total of about 265 acres. His wife was Abigail Luse, daughter of Eleazer and Jemima Luse. In the Spring of 1805, Abner brown, Sr., with his brother Ebenezer, and Abner Brown Jr., removed to Knox County, Ohio, where they erected the first grist - mill, an entirely wooden structure on Delano's Run above the Martinsburg Road. The building was about ten feet square and made of rough logs, and when the stream was full of water, had no difficulty in supplying the neighborhood with its corn meal, ground in a sort of sugar trough. Abner Brown, Sr., died in Knox County, Ohio where his will was proven on October 29, 1827. The will had been made on August 28, or the same year. He was married to Abigail LUSE.
