The most ancient of all fraternal secret societies on the globe today is that of Free Masonry which dates back as early as the building of the Temple by King Solomon. Modern Masonry is said to have had its beginning in 1646 with Elias Ashmole who Separated speculative from operative masonry and systematized its mysteries. In 1666 after the great fire in London, Sir Christopher Wren, the great architect, was chosen Grand Master of the order. In 1733 a lodge was opened at Boston, Massachusetts, which was followed by the organizing of lodges in the various American colonies and George Washington was long known as a Master Mason in a lodge in Virginia. In no country in the world has this order flourished as it has in the United States.
