L., born in 1900, lives at East Liverpool, is a veteran of the World War, having served overseas with Troop L, Seventh Cavalry, married Amy Hales ; (5) Dorothy, born Aug. 28, 1903, married Oct. 23, 1922, to P. V. McKeone, lives at Wellsville, and they have a daughter, Mary, born June 18, 1924; (6) Daniel E., born Aug. 30, 1905, lives at home ; (7) May, born Sept. 5, 1907, was graduated from Wellsville High School in 1925, married E. M. Hall, East Liverpool; and (8) Josephine, born June 11, 1910. Mr. Alton is a Republican, and has served as city councilman and safety director. He and his family are members of the Methodist Church and are representative of the best citizenship of Columbiana County. Raymond Jacobs is among the leading young business men of Columbiana County and a veteran of the World War. He was born at Wellsville, May 30, 1892, and is the son of Henry B. and Laura M. (Connell) Jacobs. Henry B. Jacobs, of Wellsville, was born at Wooster, Ohio, and has lived in this city since 1885. He has been in the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad as foreman of the painting department for 35 years and is a highly esteemed member of the community. He is a Democrat, a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and belongs to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. To Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs four children were born: Edith, married Willis H. Robinson, lives at Industry, Pa. ; Raymond, the subject of this sketch; Mary, deceased ; and Ruth M., married F. W. Heldiman, lives at Wellsville. After completing his schooling, Raymond Jacobs entered the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad in a clerical capacity and four years later he went with the East Ohio Sewer Pipe Company of Irondale, Ohio. Since 1914 he has served as auditor of this company. HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 751 Mr. Jacobs served in the World War with Company B, 23rd Infantry, Second Division, and took part in many important battles and drives of the war. He was wounded in action Oct. 4, 1918. On Nov. 16, 1920, Mr. Jacobs was united in marriage with Miss Bessie F. Wardeska, of Irondale, Ohio, born Sept. 8, 1897, and the daughter of J. C. and May (Call) Wardeska, the former a native of Germany and the latter of Ohio. They reside at Irondale. Politically, Mr. Jacobs is a Democrat. He holds membership in the Methodist Episcopal Church and is treasurer of American Legion Post No. 70, of which he also has served as commander. He is efficient in his work and is considered as one of the county's successful young men. John E. Eaton is well and favorably known in Wellsville, where he has been connected with the Pennsylvania Railroad for almost 40 years. He was born in Hancock County, W. Va., in August, 1863, and is the son of Aaron and Catherine (Worstell) Eaton. Aaron Eaton, deceased, was a veteran of the Civil War and an early settler of Columbiana County. He was a native of West Virginia and his wife was born in Ohio. In 1871 he came to this county and settled at Wellsville, where he was employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad. He was a stanch Republican, a member of the Christian Church, and belonged to the Grand Army of the Republic. He died June 11, 1914, and his wife died in September, 1924. Mr. and Mrs. Eaton were the parents of the following children: Flora, married J. J. Duell, lives in California ; Frank, deceased; John E., the subject of this sketch ; Nancy, deceased, was the wife of John Ramsey, lives at Wellsville ; Boyd, deceased ; George, killed in a railroad accident ; Mary, married J. F. Merrell, lives in Pennsylvania ; and Maylon, deceased. John E. Eaton spent his boyhood in Wellsville, received his education in the public schools and in 1886 entered the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad as a car repair man. He held various positions and from 1896 until 1924 was in complete charge of the wrecking crew. He has since worked in the carpenter department. Mr. Eaton owns a well improved farm of 78 acres in Madison Township, Columbiana County. In June, 1911, Mr. Eaton was united in marriage with Miss Jennie Phillips, of Hammondsville, Ohio. She died in April, 1919, leaving a 752 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY son, John Emerson, born March 23, 1912. On Dec. 13, 1919, Mr. Eaton was married to Miss Elizabeth Conway, of Portland Station, Ohio, born in 1875, and the daughter of William and Mary Jane (Moore) Conway. Mr. Conway died in March, 1922, and his wife lives at Tiltonsville, Ohio. They were the parents of the following children : Mrs. Eaton ; Zenas Martin, deceased ; James, lives at Tiltonsville, Ohio ; Joseph, lives at Chillicothe, Ohio ; Helen, married Benson Higgins, lives at East Liverpool; Charles, lives at Yorkville, Ohio ; and Harry, lives at Tiltonsville, Ohio. Mr. Eaton is identified with the Repubican party in politics and is a member of the Christian Church. He is highly esteemed and ranks among the reliable men of Columbiana County. Cletus H. Crook, retired, was one of Lisbon's most prominent and successful business men for many years. He was born near Lisbon, Aug. 18, 1851, and is the son of Charles and Sophia (Fredericks) Crook. Charles Crook, deceased, spent the greater part of his life in Fairfield Township, Columbiana County, where he engaged in general farming and stock raising. His wife, who was born in Lisbon, is also deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. Crook were born the following children: Marquis, lives at Lisbon ; Erret, lives at Lisbon ; Cletus H., the subject of this sketch ; Ada Neigh, lives in Cleveland ; Jennie H., deceased, was the wife of Harry Hart ; Mary B., deceased ; Anna Vogan, lives at Lisbon ; Ella McDonald, lives at Lisbon; and Mattie Harbaugh, lives at Lisbon. Cletus H. Crook was reared and educated in Fairfield Township and later removed to Lisbon, where he conducted a restaurant for 45 years. Although he now lives retired, Mr. Crook still owns the restaurant and the business is conducted by his son, Ralph S. Crook. He has lived on his present farm near Lisbon since 1922 and is the owner of 85 acres of fine farm land. On Dec. 18, 1879, Mr. Crook was united in marriage with Miss Leonora Shawke, of Lisbon, the daughter of Joseph and Sophia Shawke, both deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Crook have five children, as follows : Frank R., a pharmacist, lives in Center Township, married Bertha McKee, of Ripley, Ohio ; Ralph S., lives at Lisbon, married Marie Flugan, and they have HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 753 three children, Harold, Doris and Robert ; Josephine Sophia, married Walter E. Cutting, of Cleveland ; James Cletus, a World War veteran, lives at home ; and Florence L. Bilger, lives at Columbiana, Ohio. Politically, Mr. Crook is a Republican, and he and his family hold membership in the Methodist Episcopal Church. They have a wide acquaintance in the county and are well liked. William G. Given has been prominently identified with the agricultural interests of Columbiana County for many years. He was born in Beaver County, Pa., Aug. 3, 1856, and is the son of John and Margaret (Miller) Given. John Given, deceased, was a farmer during his active career and specialized in the breeding of sheep. He owned 80 acres of land in Beaver County, Pa., and was a leading politician of that section. He was a Democrat and a member of the Presbyterian Church. He died in March, 1885, and his wife died in 1872. Mr. and Mrs. Given had five children, as follows : David, died in infancy ; John Miller, deceased ; Margaret L., married William Hayes, lives retired at Beaver Falls, Pa. ; James T.. died in 1895; and William G., the subject of this sketch. After completing his schooling in the district schools, William G. Given engaged in general farming. He came to Columbiana County in 1885 and after spending five years in East Liverpool, he removed to St. Clair Township. Later, he returned to Beaver County, Pa., where he remained until 1898. He has since lived on his present farm of 60 acres in Madison Township. On Nov. 12, 1884, Mr. Given was united in marriage with Miss Matilda Catherine Faulk, who was born in St. Clair Township, Columbiana County, June 9, 1855, and died Sept. 10, 1903. She was the daughter of Henry and Nancy (Smith) Faulk, early settlers of this county, and both now deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. Given were born seven children, as follows: Frank L., born Sept. 2, 1886, is a veteran of the World War, lives in East Liverpool; Harry B., born Jan. 24, 1888, lives with his father ; Nannie, born March 26, 1890, lives at home ; Walter R., born Sept. 11, 1891, a veteran of the World War, lives in East Liverpool; Elbert Carmom, born Oct. 29, 1894, also a World War veteran, engaged in the (11)V2 754 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY garage business in East Liverpool ; Maggie Irene, born March 15, 1896, married William J. Flowers, Jr., lives at Leetonia, Ohio; and Mary Olive, born April 13, 1899, married Donald Fitzimmons, lives at Columbiana, Ohio. Mr. Given has a grandchild, Maggie Katherine, born Nov. 23, 1923. Mr. Given is a member of the Presbyterian Church and is one of the highly esteemed citizens of the community. James Kapotas is a successful and enterprising young business man of East Liverpool. He is a native of Carpathos, Greece, born March 5, 1893, and the son of George and Fotenee Kapotas. George Kapotas, deceased, was the son of Manuel Kapotas, a large vessel owner of Greece. He worked on his father's boats during his life time and died in 1918. His wife died two years later. To Mr. and Mrs. Kapotas were born four children : Demanto, married M. Stamatake, lives in Greece ; James, the subject of this sketch ; Gustave, lives in Alliance, Ohio ; and Emanuel, deceased. After attending the schools of his native land, James Kapotas came to the United States in November, 1912, and settled at Bellaire, Ohio. Later, he lived at Wheeling, W. Va., and in 1916 came to East Liverpool, where he engaged in the restaurant business. Since 1918 he has conducted his present business, known as the Unique Billiard Parlors. A cleaning business is also operated in connection. Mr. Kapotas is a Republican and holds membership in the Greek Orthodox Church. He is favorably known in the community in which he lives. Cyrenius Eidenier, who now lives retired in Yellow Creek Township. is a veteran of the Civil War and an interesting pioneer of Columbiana County. He was born in this county ,Oct. 12, 1841, and is the son of Jacob and Jane (Culbertson) Eidenier. Jacob Eidenier, deceased, was a native of Columbiana County, as was his wife. He was a blacksmith. He died at Boonville, Ind. in 1852 and his wife died at Wellsville, Ohio in 1900. They were the parents of the following children: Cyrenius, the subject of this sketch ; Almoreen, deceased, was a Civil War veteran ;Adigna, deceased, was also a Civil War HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 755 veteran ; William, deceased ; Elizabeth, married Jesse Coy, both deceased ; and Mary, deceased. Cyrenius Eidenier spent his boyhood in Columbiana County and was educated in a log school house. He became interested in business at an early age and for 25 years conducted a shoe business at Wellsville until July, 1903, when he moved to what is known as the Flats, one-fourth mile west of Wellsville city limits, where he owns six acres of land. During the Civil War Mr. Eidenier enlisted with Company K, 115th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and served throughout the war. Mr. Eidenier was married first, Feb. 19, 1866, to Miss Julia A. St. Clair, who was born in Columbiana County, in 1833, the daughter of Benjamin and Anne (McCann) St. Clair. To them a daughter was born, Emma J., born in 1867. She married K. W. Boring and lives in St. Petersburg, Fla. They have had four children: Earl and Merrill, both deceased ; George, lives in Florida ; and Doris, married Earl Good, lives in Florida. Mr. Eidenier was married the second time to Miss Catherine Rush. of Armstrong County, Pa., born Oct. 8, 1858, and the daughter of Joseph and Catherine (Culp) Rush, natives of Germany. The Rush family were early settlers of Armstrong County, Pa. Mr. Eidenier is a Republican, a member of the Christian Church, and belongs to the Grand Army of the Republic. He is a citizen who holds the high regard of the entire community. Christ Anas is an enterprising young business man of East Liverpool. He was born in San Floras, Greece, Oct. 27, 1898, and is the son of Gus and Agalo (Statharis) Anas. Gus Anas is a prosperous farmer of San Floras, Greece, where he owns 100 acres of land. He raises grapes and olives extensively and has his own wine and olive oil plants, dealing direct with the dealers. There are five children in the Anas family, as follows: Christ, the subject of this sketch ; James, lives in East Liverpool, where he is associated in business with his brother ; Ernest, Lamprine, and Anastatia, all students, who live at home. Christ Anas grew up in his native land, attended the public schools and was associated with his father until 1917, when he came to the United 756 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY States. He lived in Chicago for one year and then went to Woodlawn, Pa., where he was employed in the steel mills. He has lived in East Liverpool since 1921 and has had various business interests. He conducted a restaurant business for some time and in 1924 established the National Billiard Parlors at 125 East 6th Street. He also deals in cigars and refreshments. Mr. Anas is a member of the Greek Orthodox Church of East Liverpool, and has a wide acquaintance in the city. D. E. Jack is an extensive farmer and stockman of Madison Township and a substantial citizen of Columbiana County. He was born on the farm where he lives, Jan. 11, 1872, and is the son of Hugh and Isabel (McIntosh) Jack. Hugh Jack was born in Scotland and at the age of 20 years came to this country and settled in Madison Township, Columbiana County. He engaged in general farming and was a stone mason by trade, being a pioneer in the latter field of work in this section. He took part in the construction of the railroad when it was built through Wellsville. Mr. Jack was a staunch Republican and a life long member of the Yellow Creek Presbyterian Church. Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Jack : Margaret, W. A., and Charles G., all deceased ; and D. E., the subject of this sketch. D. E. Jack received his education in Witch Hollow District School, Madison Township, and began his business career in the employ of Riggs Company, general merchants of Wellsville. After a number of years he engaged in farming and stock raising and since 1909 has lived on his present farm of 77 acres. Mr. Jack is a grain farmer and also raises a good grade of stock. On Oct. 19, 1898, Mr. Jack was married to Miss Mary Nettie McIntosh, who was born on the Jack farm, Jan. 29, 1875, the daughter of William T. and Catherine F. (Falconer) McIntosh, natives of Madison Township. Mr. McIntosh was a veteran of the Civil War. He died in January, 1905, and his wife died March 2, 1926. Mrs. Jack was their only child. To Mr. and Mrs. Jack were born three children: Catherine Isabel, born July 10, 1901, a graduate of East Liverpool High School, HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 757 now in the employ of the R. Thomas Company, East Liverpool; Hugh, born in 1907, engaged in farming with his father; and John F., born June 22, 1914, a student. Mr. Jack is identified with the Republican party in politics and is a member of the Yellow Creek Presbyterian Church. L. A. Hood is well and favorably known in Madison Township, where he is successfully engaged in general farming. He was born in Independence Township, Washington County, Ohio, Nov. 11, 1866, and is the son of David B. and Lucinda (Reese) Hood. David B. Hood, deceased, was a veteran of the Civil War. He was born in Pennsylvania and at an early date removed to Washington County, Ohio, where he farmed for many years. He was a Democrat, a member of the Christian Church, and belonged to the Grand Army of the Republic. Mr. Hood died Aug. 25, 1921, at the age of 86 years, and his wife died July 8, 1889, at the age of 50 years. Mr. and Mrs. Hood had seven children, as follows: J. J., lives in Jefferson County, Ohio; L. A., the subject of this sketch ; Mahala, married J. J. Enochs, lives in Washington County, Ohio; Mary, married Jack Holmes, lives at Alliance, Ohio ; Elizabeth, married Nathan Jacobs, Toronto, Ohio; and Caroline, married George Haun, deceased. L. A. Hood spent his boyhood in Washington County and attended the public schools. He engaged _in farming with his father for several years, later operated a farm in Jefferson County, and in 1920 purchased his present well improved farm of 127 acres in Madison Township. With his general farming operations Mr. Hood is extensively engaged in stock raising. On June 29, 1888, Mr. Hood was united in marriage with Miss Margaret A. Moore, born in Washington County, Ohio, June 3, 1872, the daughter of Joshua and Mary (Robinson) Moore, both deceased. There were six children in the Moore family as follows: Thomas, lives in Cleveland ; Mary, married Henry Wedger, lives in Pennsylvania; Mrs. Hood; Frederick, lives in Wellsville; William, lives in Wellsville; and Benjamin, lives at New Cumberland, W. Va. Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hood, as follows: Herbert, born May 1, 1889, mention of whom 758 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY is made below ; John, died in infancy ; Pearl, born in 1895, died in April, 1914 ; George, born March 18, 1899, lives at Steubenville, Ohio ; Lucinda, born Aug. 6, 1897, married Ernest Mosser, lives in Washington County, Ohio ; James W., born Aug. 6, 1900, lives in East Liverpool; Ernest, born in 1903, engaged in farming with his father ; Jennie May, born July 31, 1905, married Theodore Higgins, lives in East Liverpool ; Bessie, born Dec. 26, 1908, Grace, born March 1, 1910, and Ruth, born Aug. 7, 1912, all at home. Herbert Hood is a veteran of the World War, having served overseas with Battalion C, 18th Field Artillery, Third Division. He was also with the Army of Occupation in Germany after the war. L. A. Hood is a Republican and has held many township offices. He is held in high regard in the county and is an excellent citizen. Clarence L. Snediker is a progressive and enterprising merchant of Wellsville, where he is engaged in the grocery and transfer business. He was born at Wheeling, W. Va., Aug. 3, 1873, and is a son of Samuel and Mary (McClaren) Snediker. Samuel Snediker, deceased, was born at Wellsburg, W. Va. He was an early settler of Wheeling and in 1888 removed to Wellsville where he successfully conducted a grocery business until 1905, at which time he retired and disposed of his business to his son, Clarence L. Mr. Snediker was a Republican, a member of the Methodist Church and served as justice of the peace. His wife, a native of Wellsville, is deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Snediker had four children : Charles H., engaged in the grocery business at Wellsville ; W. A., an attorney, died in 1923 ; Clarence L., the subject of this sketch ; and Maud, married W. R. Lamson, lives retired in Wellsville. Clarence L. Snediker was educated in Wellsville and at an early age became interested in his father's grocery business, which he has conducted for more than 20 years. On Feb. 24, 1894, Mr. Snediker was married to Miss Emma E. Peake, who was born in East Liverpool, Aug. 25, 1875, the daughter of John H. and Emma Elizabeth '(Moore) Peake, natives of England, and pioneers of East Liverpool. Mr. Peake died Aug. 28, 1924, and his wife died in HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 759 1894. They had three children: John H., lives in East Liverpool; Mrs. Snediker; and William B., lives in Flint, Mich. To Mr. and Mrs. Snediker have been born five children: Helen, married L. R. Mackey, lives in East Liverpool ; John Emerson, lives in Akron, Ohio, is a veteran of the World War ; Harold M., Olive Elizabeth and Carl Wilbur, all at home. There are four grandchildren : Juanita and Phyllis Mackey ; John and Harold Snediker. Mr. Snediker is a Republican, and a member of the Methodist Church. Thomas L. Allen, retired, is among the substantial and highly esteemed citizens of Wellsville. He was born at Clarion, Pa., July 20, 1856, and is a son of Thomas and Alice (Hicks) Allen. Thomas Allen, deceased, spent his entire life in Pennsylvania. He was a carpenter by trade and became a well known building contractor. Mr. Allen was a Republican and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. His wife is also deceased. They were the parents of five children: Isaac, deceased, was a Civil War veteran ; Sarah, married William Smith, both deceased ; Elizabeth, deceased, was the wife of Joseph Sampson ; Caroline, married W. F. Gourley, lives in Clarion County, Pa. ; and Thomas L., the subject of this sketch. Thomas L. Allen spent his boyhood in Clarion County, Pa., and attended the district schools. In early life he engaged in farming with his father and in 1887 removed to East Liverpool, where he learned the sheet metal trade. Mr. Allen was employed in the shops of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company for 37 years, and has lived retired in Wellsville since 1922. On Nov. 15, 1882, Mr. Allen was married to Miss Mary Pittinger, who was born in Hancock County, W. Va., June 24, 1856, the daughter of Nicholas and Elizabeth (Andrews) Pittinger, the former a native of Hancock County, W. Va., and the latter of Pennsylvania. Mr. and Mrs. Pittinger were the parents of the following children : Dallas, deceased ; Jerusha, married James Hall, both deceased ; Marietta, the widow of Winslow Hood, lives in East Liverpool; Thomas A., deceased ; Mrs. Allen ; John, deceased ; Frank, lives at Newell, W. Va.; and William, lives in East Liverpool. To Mr. and Mrs. Allen were born two children: Edwin, born 760 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY Dec. 20, 1883, a traveling passenger and freight agent for the Union Pacific Railroad, lives in Cleveland, married Vinnie Grunt, and they have a daughter, Louise Mary ; and Clyde, born Nov. 26, 1899, died June 18, 1900. Mr. Allen is a Democrat and has served as city councilman. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church in which he is an elder. James A. Forbes, who ranks among the prominent and successful business men of Wellsville, was born in Madison Township, Columbiana County, July 14, 1867, and is the son of Daniel and Nancy (Smith) Forbes. Daniel Forbes, deceased, was a native of Scotland. At an early age he came to this country and settled on a farm in Madison Township, Columbiana County. He cleared 100 acres of land and was extensively engaged in grain raising. He was a Republican. Mr. Forbes died in January, 1906. His wife is also deceased, and they are buried in Yellow Creek Cemetery. To Mr. and Mrs. Forbes nine children were born, as follows : Alexander, deceased ; Christine, married John Rose, both deceased ; John S., deceased ; Laughlin, lives on the old homestead in Madison Township ; Nettie, married John Gunn, lives in Iowa ; Margaret, married Angus Campbell, a farmer, lives in Madison Township ; Daniel, lives at Wellsville ; James A., the subject of this sketch ; and William M., lives at Wellsville. James A. Forbes received his early education in the schools of Madison Township. At an early age he learned the carpenter trade, and in 1900 engaged in the building business in Wellsville. He has established an excellent business and is a builder of high grade residences. He was the contractor in charge of the building of Wellsville High School. Mr. Forbes' son is associated in business with him and the firm is known as James A. Forbes & Son. On Dec. 31, 1896, Mr. Forbes was united in marriage with Miss Christine Jane Noble, who was born in Madison Township, Columbiana County, in August, 1873, the daughter of Laughlin and Margaret (Lowden) Noble, both deceased. The former was a farmer of Madison Township. There are three children in the Noble family : Mrs. Forbes ; Bertha, who resides with Mr. and Mrs. Forbes ; and John, lives at Lisbon, Ohio. To Mr. and HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 761 Mrs. Forbes have been born four children: Lester, born at Wellsville, Jan. 10, 1898, was graduated from Wellsville High School and Ohio State University in June, 1924, as an electrical engineer, is now associated with the Northern Indiana Gas and Electric Company of Hammond, Ind.; Irene, born Jan. 1, 1900, died Dec. 29, 1909 ; Homer, born in October, 1904, died in infancy ; and Donald, born on Nov. 11, 1907, graduate of Wellsville High School, engaged in business with his father. Mr. Forbes is a Republican and a member of the First Presbyterian Church, of which he has been on the board of trustees for the past 14 years. He is a charter member of the Kiwanis Club and the Chamber of Commerce, and takes an active interest in the affairs of the community. J. O. Carney, of West Point, is well and favorably known in Columbiana County. He was born at Beaver Falls, Pa., June 22, 1879, and is a son of Joseph and Sarah (Dailey) Carney. Joseph Carney, deceased, was a veteran of the Civil War. He was born at Beaver Falls, Pa., where he spent his entire life. He served during the Civil War with Company E, First Pennsylvania Cavalry and was wounded in service. He was a Republican, a member of the Methodist Church and the Grand Army of the Republic. Mr. Carney died in 1919. His wife resides at Harmerville, Pa. They were the parents of the following children: Rose, the widow of William O'Brien, lives at Harmerville ; Harry and Emma, deceased; Stella, married Julius Potter, a farmer, lives in Beaver County, Pa.; J. 0., the subject of this sketch ; Sarah, the widow of Mathew New, lives at Harmerville, Pa.; Frank, deceased, was a Spanish-American War veteran ; and Roy, a farmer, lives in Beaver County, Pa. J. O. Carney received his education in the schools of Beaver Falls and began his business career as the proprietor of a restaurant at Conway, Pa.. which he conducted for 12 years. In 1913 he removed to East Liverpool where he was interested in the motion picture business for several years. He also conducted a confectionery store there. In May, 1924, Mr. Carney purchased his present place of business, a gasoline and oil service station, which is located on the Lincoln Highway at the juncture of the East Liverpool and Wellsville roads. He also handles automo- 762 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY bile accessories and conducts a grocery and confectionery business in connection with the former. On April 27, 1900, Mr. Carney was united in marriage with Miss Mary Friedrich, who was born at New Brighton, Pa., Aug. 20, 1881, the daughter of John and Helena (Water) Friedrich, the former a native of Germany and the latter of Pennsylvania. Mr. and Mrs. Friederich, now deceased, were the parents of the following children: George, deceased ; Elizabeth, lives at Beaver Falls, Pa. ; Mrs. Carney ; John, lives at New Brighton, Pa. ; Walter, Beaver Falls, Pa.; Helen, deceased ; Lawrence, resides at Beaver Falls, Pa.; Herman, a veteran of the World War, lives at Beaver Falls ; and Roy, lives at Beaver Falls. To Mr. and Mrs. Carney have been born four children: Mary, born Aug. 17, 1902 ; Joseph, born Feb. 2, 1910; Sarah, born Dec. 16, 1913, and Calvin, born Jan. 16, 1926. Mr. Carney is a Republican and a member of the Catholic Church. He has an extensive acquaintance in the community and is favorably known. George B. McCormick is a representative young business man of Lisbon, where he is local agent for the Chrysler automobile. He is a native of Wayne Township, Columbiana County, born Jan. 13, 1901, and the son of D. S. and Nannie May (Williams) McCormick. Both D. S. McCormick and his wife are natives of Columbiana County and residents of Lisbon, where he is connected with the local post office as a rural mail carrier. George B. McCormick received his education in the Lisbon schools and for several years was employed by the Mullins Body Corporation. He spent a year in the employ of the Peerless Automobile Company at Detroit, Mich., was identified with the Barnes Motor Company, Cleveland, for two years, after which he returned to Lisbon, and engaged in the battery business here. He has been agent for the Chrysler automobile since 1923 and has a fine salesroom and service station on the Lincoln Way, known as the Chrysler Sales & Service Company. On Sept. 4, 1924, Mr. McCormick was united in marriage with Miss Ruth Patterson, the daughter of David M. and Mary Patterson, of Lisbon. HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 763 Mr. McCormick holds membership in the United Presbyterian Church and the Knights of Pythias. He is among the reliable business men of Lisbon and is well known. S. D'Amore is among the successful merchants of Wellsville where he is engaged in the grocery and produce business. He was born in Italy, Nov. 11, 1871, and is the son of Antonio and Marie D'Amore, both deceased. There were seven children in the D'Amore family : Lorenzo and Sonta, both deceased ; S., the subject of this sketch ; Bernadine, Otto, Gregory, and Satinia, all residents of Italy. S. D'Amore spent his boyhood in his native land and attended the public schools there. In 1901, after having completed four years service in the Italian army, he emigrated to the United States and settled in Wellsville, where he followed his trade as a bricklayer. In 1912 he established his present business on Third Street. He handles a complete line of groceries, produce, candies, ice cream, etc. Mr. D'Amore is a member of the Catholic Church and is well and favorably known in the community. Harry Crubaugh. Numbered among the successful young business men of Lisbon is Harry Crubaugh, proprietor of the Crubaugh Chevrolet Garage. He was born on a farm in Madison Township, Columbiana County, April 4, 1900, and is the son" of Wesley and Oma (Meridith) Crubaugh. Wesley Crubaugh, a substantial citizen of Columbiana County, engaged in general farming and stock raising in Madison Township, is a native of this county. His father settled on the present Crubaugh farm during the early days and it has since remained in the family. It was the spot in Columbiana County where General Morgan surrendered in July, 1863. Harry Crubaugh was educated in the public schools of Madison Township and was interested in farming on the home place until 1922, at which time he established the Crubaugh Chevrolet Garage in Lisbon. It was organized as Fife & Crubaugh, but two years later Mr. Crubaugh became sole owner. He conducts a first class garage and operates a gasoline 764 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY filling station in connection. His salesroom is among the attractive automobile showrooms in the county and he has a well organized business. The building, erected in 1924 at a cost of $18,000, replaced the original structure, which was destroyed by fire. On Dec. 24, 1924, Mr. Crubaugh was united in marriage with Miss Sylvia Nettrour, the daughter of Walter S. and Eva (Aldridge) Nettrour, of Leetonia. Mr. Crubaugh is an independent voter. He holds membership in the United Presbyterian Church and belongs to the Grange. Both he and his wife have a wide acquaintance throughout Columbiana County and are well liked. Harper F. Merrick, efficient cashier of the Kensington State Bank, is a member of a prominent pioneer family of Columbiana County. He was born in West Township, Columbiana County, Nov. 13, 1861, and is the son of William and Jane (Coulson) Merrick. William Merrick was born in Hanover Township, Columbiana County, in 1815, and spent his entire life on a farm. Both he and his wife are deceased. Harper F. Merrick grew up on his father's farm and received his education in the schools of Hanover Township, Mt. Union College and Ohio Northern University at Ada, Ohio. He was employed at Alliance, Ohio, for a short time and later spent a year at Manistee, Mich., where he was engaged in the title and abstract business. Since 1908 he has been identified with the Kensington State Bank as cashier, in which position he has proven his ability and trustworthiness. In November, 1888, Mr. Merrick was married to Miss Laura Coulson, the daughter of Jesse and Mary (Baker) Coulson, of Morgan County, Ohio. Two sons were born to Mr. and Mrs. Merrick : Charles E., who attended Ohio University, at Athens, Ohio, Valpariso University, at Valparaiso, Ind., and Oberlin College, at Oberlin, Ohio, is now engaged in general farming in West Township, Columbiana County; and William R., deceased. He attended Ohio University, at Athens, Ohio, and at the time of his death in 1915 was studying law at Georgetown University. Mr. Merrick is a Republican and is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge. He is township treasurer and has been a member of the school board since 1910. HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 765 The Kensington State Bank was established Nov. 1, 1906, by J. W. Cox and David Conser. The present officers are : J. W. Cox, president ; F. L. Cox, vice president ; Harper Merrick, cashier ; and C. H. Hoopes, assistant cashier. The directors are : J. W. Cox, F. L. Cox, Harper Merrick, C. H. Hoopes, Harry H. Myers, and John M. Oyer. The Kensington State Bank is among the thriving banking institutions of Columbiana County. It has a capital of $25,000 and a surplus of $16,500. Charles H. Hoopes is well and favorably known in Columbiana County as the assistant cashier of the Kensington State Bank. He was born in Augusta Township, Carroll County, Ohio, Feb. 21, 1877, and is the son of William M. and Eliza (Harrison) Hoopes. William M. Hoopes, who lives retired at Kensington, engaged in general farming during his active career and met with success. After completing his schooling in the district schools and at Mt. Union College, Charles H. Hoopes spent 25 years in the teaching profession. He served as district superintendent of the schools of Elkrun, Unity and Middleton townships, in Columbiana County, and was serving in this capacity in January, 1919, when he resigned to accept his present banking position. Mr. Hoopes had also been superintendent of the Salineville schools for three years and superintendent of the New Waterford schools for four years. On April 13, 1900, Mr. Hoopes was married to Miss Alice Long, the daughter of Martin H. and Sarah (Russell) Long, of East Township, Carroll County, Ohio. To them were born five children: Irma, was graduated from Lisbon High School in 1919 and from Mt. Union College in 1925 ; Edgar M., was graduated from Minerva High School in 1921, and in 1926 from Mt. Union College ; Mary Alice, graduated 1926 from Minerva High School ; Ruth, deceased, and Charles Robert, born Jan. 11, 1926. Mr. Hoopes and his family are members of the Christian Church and are representative of the finest citizenship of Columbiana County. He is a Republican and a member of the Masonic Lodge. Mr. Hoopes is a candidate for nomination on the Republican ticket for County Treasurer of Columbiana County in the primaries of August, 1926. 766 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY Thomas H. Fisher, vice president of the First National Bank of East Liverpool, is among the prominent and successful business men of Columbiana County. He was born in Beaver County, Pa., May 30, 1873, and is the son of William Harvey and Martha A. (Laughlin) Fisher. Thomas H. Fisher entered the employ of the First National Bank of East Liverpool, Ohio at the age of 16 years and from a messenger boy he has risen to his present executive office. He was elected vice president of the First National Bank of East Liverpool in 1923. Mr. Fisher is also vice president and treasurer of the Federal Building & Loan Company, and president of the National China Company of Saline-vine, Ohio. In August, 1907, Mr. Fisher was united in marriage with Miss Glennelle Reed of Wooster, Ohio, the daughter of Milton and Martha A. (Brenaman) Reed. Mr. and Mrs. Reed are residents of Wooster. In politics Mr. Fisher is a Republican and served as a member of the school board. He is identified with the Second United Presbyterian Church, the Masonic Lodge and Shrine, the Rotary Club, East Liverpool Country Club and the Chamber of Commerce. He is an energetic and enterprising citizen and well known throughout the community. B. R. Stout, a progressive and enterprising citizen of Kensington, where he is engaged in the mercantile business, was born here Nov. 24, 1891, the son of William and Ella (Ruhl) Stout. William Stout, who died in 1919, was a well known merchant of Kensington for many years. His wife now resides in Los Angeles, Calif. After completing his schooling in the public and high schools of Kensington, B. R. Stout attended Mt. Union College and Alliance Business College. He was associated in business with his father for a number of years, spent some time in the employ of the East Ohio Gas Company in Cleveland, the American Multigraph Company, Cleveland, and in 1920 returned to Kensington to assume his father's business interests. The Kensington Merchandise Company was established in March, 1921, with N. C. Maines, president ; F. L. Cox, vice president ; and Mr. Stout, secretary, treasurer and manager. In January, 1926 Mr. Stout bought out the Kensington Merchandise Company and is now sole owner and conducts HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 767 the business. He carries a complete and high Lade line of general merchandise and has an extensive business. On June 27, 1916, Mr. Stout was united in marriage with Miss Miriam Culp, of Alliance, Ohio, and the daughter of William T. S. Culp. They have a daughter, Janet Marilyn, born April 2, 1921. Mr. Stout is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Masonic Lodge. He is an independent voter. John C. Strahm, who conducts a general merchandise business in Hanover Township, is a leading citizen of the community and a member of a family that has long been identified with Columbiana County. He was born in Hanover Township, Columbiana County, July 25, 1887, and is the son of Francis M. and Margaret (Keitzer) Strahm. Francis M. Strahm was born in Butler Township, Columbiana County, July 7, 1861, and is the son of Charles Strahm, who came to this county from Pennsylvania during the early days and settled on land in Butler Township. Francis M. Strahm has always been interested in general farming and stock raising and operates 106 acres of land. His wife was born at New Chambersburg, Ohio, Jan. 26, 1861. They have two children: Ora May Wilkinson, lives in Butler Township, Columbiana County ; and John C., the subject of this sketch. John C. Strahm grew up in Hanover Township and when a young man engaged in general farming with his father. He later entered the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad, with whom he remained for eight years. He engaged in general farming for several years and in 1924 purchased his present business from Carle & Carle. It is located at New Garden. On Jan. 25, 1912, Mr. Strahm was married to Miss Nellie Louden, of Hanover Township, the daughter of Robert and Emma (Young) Louden. Mr. Louden was born in Wayne Township, Columbiana County, April 28, 1858, and died Oct. 19, 1919. His wife resides in Hanover Township. To Mr. and Mrs. Strahm three daughters were born: Bernice Pauline, born July 3, 1913 ; Thelma May, born Nov. 27, 1916 ; and Maxine Luceille, born Sept. 25, 1918. Mr. Strahm is a member of the Christian Church, the Masonic Lodge, and is a Democrat. 768 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY Robert S. Ramsey, an enterprising and progressive farmer of Center Township, is a native of Columbiana County. He was born in the township, where he resides, Aug. 23, 1854, and is the son of John and Keziah (Hamilton) Ramsey. John Ramsey, son of Robert Ramsey, was a native of Madison Township, Columbiana County, and a prosperous farmer of this section. Both he and his wife are deceased and buried in West Beaver Cemetery. They were the parents of 12 children, two of whom are living: Robert S., the subject of this sketch ; and Keziah, married Ramsey McGregor, lives at Lisbon. After completing his schooling in the district schools of his native township, Robert S. Ramsey engaged in general farming with his father. After his marriage in 1881 he purchased his present farm and several years later added to his original land holdings until he owned 116 acres of well improved land. Mr. Ramsey has disposed of some of this land, which has been allotted into homesites. He still maintains about 25 acres, but lives practically retired. On Sept. 14, 1881, Mr. Ramsey was united in marriage with Miss Lucy Burnett, of Hubbard, Trumble County, Ohio, and the daughter of Edmund P. and Christiana (Myers) Burnett, both deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Ramsey have no children. In politics Mr. Ramsey is identified with the Republican party and holds membership in the Presbyterian Church. Mr. and Mrs. Ramsey have a wide circle of friends in the community where they have spent so many years and are highly esteemed. Paul Haubert. Ranking among the capable business men of Lisbon is Paul Haubert, who is successfully engaged in the automobile, real estate, and insurance business there. He was born in Stark County, Ohio, Sept. 18, 1874, and is the son of John and Elizabeth (Hein) Haubert, both deceased. Paul Haubert attended the schools of Stark County, was interested in coal mining for a number of years as a mine superintendent, and in January, 1923, established his present automobile business in partnership with Orin Hein and Carl Fife. They have an up-to-date and attrac- HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 769 tive salesroom and are the local dealers for the Nash and Ajax automobiles, as well as the Nash trucks. April, 1924, Mr. Haubert became engaged in partnership with G. C. Rauch, in the real estate and general insurance business. Mr. Haubert was married Oct. 15, 1900, to Miss Verna Wallace, the daughter of James and Mary (Moore) Wallace, of Carroll County, Ohio. They have a daughter, Leona, who is the wife of Carl Fife, of Lisbon. Mr. Haubert and his family are identified with the Reform Church and he belongs to the Knights of Pythias and The Grange. He has been successful and is one of Lisbon's efficient citizens. Orin Hein, a member of the firm of Hein & Haubert, agents for the Nash and Ajax automobiles at Lisbon, is a popular young business man of Columbiana County. He was born in Stark County, Ohio, Sept. 13, 1891, and is the son of Paul and Mary (Schwartz) Hein.. Paul Hein, who resides in Stark County, Ohio, is a successful farmer and operates a well improved farm of 125 acres. After completing his schooling in the schools of Rose Township, Carroll County, Ohio, Orin Hein followed farming for several years. He later worked in the coal mines of Deerfield, Ohio, and since 1923 has been identified with the Hein & Haubert Motor Car Company. Besides having the agency for the Nash and Ajax automobiles they are agents for the Nash trucks. Mr. Hein is an independent voter. He is a member of the Reform Church and the Moose Lodge. He has a wide acquaintance throughout Columbiana County and is well liked. Charles Chandler Connell, of Lisbon, is a representative member of the bar of Columbiana County. He was born at Lisbon, Sept. 27, 1871, and is the son of George and Louisa (Chandler) Connell ; his father George M. Connell, deceased, was widely known as the author of the play, "The Fall of Atlanta." C. C. Connell received his early education in the public schools of Lisbon, in Ohio State University until 1892 and graduated from the Cin- (12)V2 770 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY cinnati Law School in 1894. He has ever since been engaged in the practice of law at Lisbon. During the World War Mr. Connell held the rank of major and was awarded the Medal of Honor by the French War Department for his work done as chief of the medical personnel of the American Red Cross. He served as a member of the Senate for four years, as U. S. referee in Bankruptcy for seven years, and he also served as city solicitor for 12 years. Mr. Connell is vice president of the Firestone Bank of Lisbon. On June 27, 1901, Mr. Connell was united in marriage with Miss Evelyn Gaskill, of Lisbon, the daughter of Charles and Kitty (Harvey) Gaskill. They have no children. Mr. Connell is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge, the Ohio Society of New York, and the Leister Club of Dublin, Ireland. Andrew H. Rininger who successfully operates a general merchandise store at Dungannon, Ohio, is among the well known business men of Columbiana County. He was born April 7, 1883, at Canal Fulton, Stark County, Ohio, and is a son of Solomon A. and Roseanah (Kinsley) Rininger. Both Mr. and Mrs. Rininger were early settlers of Stark County and are both now deceased. They are buried at Greensburg, Ohio. Andrew H. Rininger received his education in the public schools of Comet, Summit County, Ohio. For 18 years he was in the employ of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company at Akron, Ohio. On Oct. 25, 1923, Mr. Rininger came to Dungannon where he bought his present business. This is one of the up to date stores of its kind in this section and Mr. Rininger has a well established business. On Oct. 14, 1905, Mr. Rininger was united in marriage with Miss Elizeida S. Keck, of McDonaldsville, Stark County, Ohio, a daughter of J. F. and Christiana (Sells) Keck. Mr. Keck lives in McDonaldsville and his wife died on Aug. 8, 1915. To Mr. and Mrs. Rininger six children have been born as follows : Chioma La Verne ; Glen Wallace ; Thora Elzaida ; Dawn Junita ; Duane Andrew ; and Lorna Eileen. In politics Mr. Rininger is independent. He is a member of the Reform Church, the Modern Woodmen of America and the Farmers Grange. He is a public spirited and progressive man and has many friends in his community. HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 771 David W. Thomas ranks among the prosperous farmers and substantial citizens of Knox Township, where he was born Oct. 13, 1858. He is the son of Eli and Rachel (Bushman) Thomas. Eli Thomas, deceased, was born in Washington Township, Stark County, Ohio, and at an early age removed to Columbiana County. He was the son of Jacob Thomas, an extensive land owner of Knox Township. Mr. and Mrs. Eli Thomas, deceased, were the parents of the following children : David W., the subject of this sketch ; Mrs. Sarah Sanor, lives in Knox Township ; James M., a sketch of whom appears in this history ; George, deceased ; Hiram H., lives in Knox Township ; Joseph and Amanda Jane, both deceased ; Clara Irene, deceased ; and Howard, deceased. David W. Thomas received his education in the schools of Knox Township, where he has always lived. He purchased his present farm in November, 1891, which is among the attractive farms of Columbiana County. He operates 45 acres of land and for a time had a good grade of stock. On Sept. 25, 1890, Mr. Thomas was married to Miss Rena Mangus of West Township, Columbiana County, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Mangus. Mr. Mangus lives retired. His wife died in March, 1922. To Mr. and Mrs. Thomas six children were born, as follows : Wallace P., lives in Knox Township ; Earl R., lives at Homeworth, married Marie L. Johnson, and they have two children, Helen F., and Donald Earl ; Virgil L., married Clara E. Stump, and they have a daughter, Kathleen F. ; Ray D., lives at home ; Arthur M., married Susie L. Borton, lives at Sebring, Ohio, and they have two children, Richard E. and Betty Aline ; and Dora M., the wife of Emmett E. Grimes, lives at Homeworth. Mr. Thomas and his family are members of United Brethren Church. He has served as a member of the local school board for a number of years and has always taken an active interest in the affairs of his community. Col. J. H. Sinclair, widely known auctioneer of Columbiana County, is a veteran of the World War. He was born in Hanover Township, Columbiana County, Oct. 25, 1888, and is the son of Leroy W. and Sarah F. (Ehehart) Sinclair. Leroy W. Sinclair is deceased, his widow resides at Hanoverton, Ohio. J. H. Sinclair attended the public schools of Columbiana County and was graduated from the Missouri Auction School, Kansas City, Mo., in 772 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY 1914. Since that time he has been engaged in that particular line of work at Hanoverton and vicinity. On Aug. 26, 1919, Mr. Sinclair was united in marriage with Miss Nellie E. Taylor, the daughter of Frank and Flora (Chandler) Taylor. They have no children. During the World War, Mr. Sinclair enlisted July 25, 1918, and was sent to Camp Jackson, S. C., where he became a member of a replacement outfit in the field artillery. He was discharged at Camp Sherman, Jan. 10, 1919. Mr. Sinclair is a Republican and is now serving as township clerk and clerk of the school board. He has served as mayor. He holds membership in the Christian Church, Masonic Lodge, Salem Commandery, Lake Erie Consistory, Al Koran Shrine of Cleveland, and the American Legion. Mr. Sinclair is a prominent citizen of the community and is highly esteemed. John W. Davis is a leading and representative citizen of East Palestine and is widely known throughout Columbiana County. He was born near Lisbon in Elk Run Township, Aug. 15, 1877, and is the son of William and Amy (Chamberlin) Davis. William Davis, now retired, is a native of Columbiana County, as was his wife. She is deceased. John W. Davis received his education in the district schools and when a young man was employed on a. farm. He then spent several years in a tin plate mill at Lisbon, after which he entered the coal mines of this section. He served as a representative of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for five years and is now engaged in business at Lisbon, with offices on North Market Street. His residence however, is in East Palestine. Mr. Davis served as a member of the school board of East Palestine for 12 years, and was clerk of the board. On Sept. 10, 1902, Mr. Davis was united in marriage with Miss Martha Wainwright, of Lisbon, and they have eight children: Theda. Paul, Marion, John W., Jr., Arthur, Dale, Wayne and Betty. Mr. Davis is an independent voter. He holds membership in the Methodist Church and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He and his family have a wide acquaintance in the community and many friends. HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 773 Clarence A. Hole. Among the highly esteemed and prominent citizens of Columbiana County is Clarence A. Hole, mayor of Hanoverton. He was born at Hanoverton, Jan. 31, 1871, and is the son of Dr. Samuel J. and Mary Ann (Endley) Hole. Dr. Samuel J. Hole was one of the early settlers of this section of the state and a leading pioneer physician. He is now deceased. Clarence A. Hole has spent his entire life in Columbiana County. After completing his schooling he engaged in the mercantile business for several years. He is now a painting contractor. Mr. Hole was elected mayor of Hanoverton in 1915 and served three successive terms. He has also been township trustee and a member of the town council. On Jan. 31, 1894, Mr. Hole was married to Miss Clara Gregg, the daughter of George and Mary F. (Steele) Gregg, of Carlton, Ohio. They have three children : Gretchen, Charles, and Mary. Politically, Mr. Hole is a Republican. He and his family hold membership in the Presbyterian Church and have a wide acquaintance in the community in which they live. William Lloyd Fultz, of Hanoverton, ranks among the progressive and enterprising citizens of Columbiana County. He was born in Winona, Butler Township, Columbiana County, Feb. 13, 1883, and. is the son of Jacob and Emma (Scattergood) Fultz. Jacob Fultz is deceased, and his widow married M. H. Ruble and resides near Hanoverton. William Lloyd Fultz grew up in Columbiana County and attended the schools of Butler Township and District School No. 6. He engaged in the saw mill business for a short time, later the railroad business, and since March, 1924, has lived at Hanoverton, where he conducts a restaurant and confectionery business. On May 30, 1906, Mr. Fultz was united in marriage with Miss Mary E. Cope, who died Nov. 6, 1921. She was the daughter of Charles Freemont and Anna (Railey) Cope, of Hanoverton. Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Fultz: Frank Jacob, at home Duanne Curtis, deceased, and a daughter died in infancy. Mr. Fultz is a Republican, a member of the Presbyterian Church, and belongs to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows at Centerville, Pa. 774 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY George T. Farrell, a representative member of the bar at Lisbon, and one of the leading citizens of Columbiana County, is a native of this place. He was born at Lisbon, Ohio, May 31, 1876, and is the son of James D. and Mary (Maloney) Farrell. James D. Farrell, deceased, spent his entire life as a railroader and for many years was employed by the Erie Railroad as an engineer and master mechanic. Both he and his wife are deceased and buried at Lisbon. George T. Farrell was reared and educated in Lisbon. He read law in the offices of Hon. Charles S. Speaker, one of Columbiana County's most prominent attorneys, who died March 14, 1925. Mr. Farrell was associated in practice with Mr. Speaker until the latter's death. On June 16, 1900, Mr. Farrell was united in marriage with Miss Helen Cavanaugh, the daughter of John and Anna (Morris) Cavanaugh, both deceased. Mrs. Farrell died Dec. 24, 1922, and is buried in Lisbon. Politically, Mr. Farrell is a Republican and he served as mayor of Lisbon from 1900 until 1908. He is a member of the Catholic Church and affiliated with the Elks Lodge. W. A. Fox, who has been in the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad as station agent at Kensington for 36 years, is a member of one of Columbiana County's honored pioneer families. He was born at Hanoverton, Columbiana County, June 9, 1869, and is the son of Reason and Mary (Hoffee) Fox, both of whom are deceased. W. A. Fox received his education in the schools of Hanoverton, and when a boy learned telegraphy in the Kensington station, of the Pennsylvania Railroad, at that time operated by Oliver Miller. He later served as clerk under M. Leonard, local agent, and since 1908 has been station agent. On Nov. 12, 1894, Mr. Fox was united in marriage with Miss Eva L. Fox, the daughter of George and Myra (Combs) Fox, of Robertsville. To them were born six children, as follows: Esther, married Wyland Jones, lives in Rochester, N. Y. ; Gladys, married Wade Robinson, lives at Whittier, Calif., and they have a son, Jack ; Fern, married Earl Yoder, lives at Minerva, Ohio, and they have a daughter, Dorothy ; Margaret, HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 775 married Dwight Glass, lives at Alliance, Ohio ; Earl and Curtiss, both at home. In politics, Mr. Fox is identified with the Republican party. He and his family are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and he is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge. He is a representative citizen of the community and is well and favorably known. Frank S. Davis, who is successfully engaged in the mercantile business at Hanoverton, was born at Winona, Ohio, Jan. 25, 1876, and is the son of Isaac and Susan (Morrison) Davis. Both Isaac Davis and his wife are deceased. Frank S. Davis attended the district schools and when a young man entered railroad work. Later he engaged in the saw mill business and in 1910 removed to Hanoverton, where he engaged in construction work. His present business was established in 1919. Mr. Davis carries general merchandise and is well patronized by the surrounding community. In 1902 Mr. Davis was united in marriage with Miss Nettie Fultz, the daughter of Jacob and Emma (Scattergood) Fultz. Jacob Fultz is deceased and Mrs. Fultz is now the wife of M. H. Ruble, Hanoverton, Ohio. They have no children. Politically, Mr. Davis is a Republican. He and his wife are members of the Disciple Church and are highly esteemed members of the community. E. E. Bower, a well known and substantial citizen of Columbiana County, who lives at Kensington, is a native of this county. He was born at Homeworth, July 15, 1880, and is the son of Adam and Sarah (Curry) Bower. Adam Bower was a farmer and is now deceased. He spent his entire life in Columbiana County and owned a well improved farm. His wife is also deceased. After completing his schooling in the public schools, E. E. Bower attended Salem Business College. He then entered the employ of the Adams Express Company at Pittsburgh, later was with the Crucible Steel Company for nine years, and then engaged in general farming in Columbi- 776 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY ana County for ten years. Since January, 1925, Mr. Bower has been identified with the Kensington Supply Company as manager. They are dealers in farm implements, machinery, lumber, grain, feed, etc. The Kensington Supply Company was organized in June, 1923, and the present officers are: J. B. Sanor, president ; W. S. Lepper, secretary ; and Mr. Bower, manager. Mr. Bower is a member of the Presbyterian Church and the Masonic Lodge. He and his family have a wide acquaintance in the community and are highly esteemed. Rev. Grant E. Pike, who lives retired in Center Township, is a member of a prominent pioneer family of Columbiana County. He was born in this township, Oct. 5, 1863, and is the son of DeLorma Frederick and Cordelia A. (Arter) Pike. DeLorma Frederick Pike was born in Fairfield Township, Columbiana County, July 17, 1835, and died Sept. 25, 1910. He was the son of John Crawford and Maria H. (Frederick) Pike. His father was Hugh Pike, a native of England, who emigrated to this country when 20 years of age. He came with his father, Thomas Pike, who was a near relative of Capt. Zebulon Pike. Thomas Pike was visited by Capt. Pike upon his return from his western trip, at which time he explored Pike's Peak. Immediately following this visit, President Washington sent him to Canada to take Fort York, now Quebec, from the English. During this siege Captain Pike was killed. Thomas Pike married Mary Crawford, one of whose ancestors, Witherspoon, signed the Declaration of Independence. To Thomas and Mary Pike were born the following children : Thomas William, John, Hugh, Lewis, Robert, Elizabeth, married William Whistler ; Matilda, married Rev. S. S. McKown ; Sarah Jane, married Samuel Stapleton. John, grandfather of Rev. Grant E. Pike, married Maria, daughter of Thomas Frederick. Their children were as follows: Thomas ; Benjamin Henry ; Susanna Adams ; Wilhelmina, married James I. Caldwell; Sadie, married George Walters ; Sarah, married Robert George Eells ; Hannah, married Capt. John Myers. Thomas, Frederick's father's name was Thomas, and he HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 777 was born near Harrisburg, Pa. His father, Noah, was killed by the Indians, the mother tomahaWked and left for dead. The boy, Thomas, was carried off by the Indians and made a prisoner at the age of seven years. Later a release was officially secured at Fort Duquesne, Pa., now Pittsburgh. He grew up in Philadelphia and married Margaret Tibbins, to whom were born the following children : George, Catherine, Thomas, Elizabeth, Jacob, Henry, John, Noah, Samuel, Margaret, Mary, and William. Thomas Frederick located near Lisbon in 1804, Thomas Jefferson signing the patent to the land and also James Madison, then secretary of state. He died in 1808. The farm was sold to the son, Thomas, the father of Maria, grandmother of the subject of this sketch. The family originally came from Germany on account of religious persecution. The ancestors run back as follows: Brown, Miller, and Gloss, the latter being private physician to the Emperor of Germany. After the marriage of John Crawford Pike to Maria Frederick, Feb. 13, 1834, they located west of Lisbon and were farmers, principally raising sheep. They have seven children: DeLorma Frederick ; Mary Ann, married Aaron Arter, and they had three children, Homer, John .and Olive; Sophia, married Jesse Frost, and they had three children, Wilbur, Frank, and Elsie; Robert Thomas, married Louisa Thomas, and they had five children, Linnie, Mary, John, Olive and Ralph ; and Irene, married William Rudisill, and they had two children, John and Marie. Cordelia A. (Arter) Pike, mother of the subject of this sketch, was born Dec. 6, 1840, and died Nov. 13, 1925. Her ancestors located north of Lisbon in 1804. Her father, Simon, who had one brother, Daniel, and one sister, Rebecca Hardman, married M. Burger, to whom were born 11 children: Daniel ; Belinda, married Solomon Switzer ; Anthony ; George ; Cordelia ; Aaron ; Mariah, married William Webb ; Charlotte, married Edward Hull Samuel; Marcus and Lambertine. The grandfather, Abram Arter, came from Maryland and located north of Lisbon and was one of the founders of the old "Brick Church," Reformed. Originally the family came from Germany and through this source Reverend Pike inherited one of the first German printed Bibles still in his possession. Reverend Pike's parents were married March 21, 1860, and settled five miles west of Lisbon on a farm near Gillford. They were prosperous farmers and active in church work. Here Reverend Pike and his sister, Georgia 778 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY Mariah, born Dec. 25, 1861, received their early training and schooling. In 1880 their father purchased and moved to a farm just north of Lisbon. They attended Lisbon High School, where they were graduated in 1884. They both entered Mount Union College in 1885 and were graduated in 1887. Georgia was married to George Nichols, born April 14, 1862. He was the son of Mahlon and Hanna Nichols, farmers, east of Salem. They located north of Columbiana and have two sons : Hayden George, born Oct. 26, 1899; and Paul Spencer, born Aug. 17, 1904. They both graduated from Columbiana High School, took up teaching and entered Mount Union College, and later Hiram College. Reverend Pike re-entered Mount Union College in 1889 and received his degree of A. B. in 1890. On Feb. 18, 1890, he married Miss Alice Dustman, of Berlin Center, Ohio, a graduate of Mount Union College, and a daughter of Abram and Mary (Hartsough) Dustman. In 1890 he entered the ministry in the Disciple Church at New Baltimore, Ohio. After holding successful pastorates in eastern Ohio, especially at Barnesville, where in four years he had 250 accessions to the church and engineered the erection of a new church building, he took pastoral work in Chicago and entered the University of Chicago for the degree of B. D. On account of his wife's failing health he took work at Colorado City and Sweetwater, Texas, but returned in two years to Alliance, Ohio, where his wife died, Jan. 18, 1904. He then returned to his father's home in Lisbon on account of a nervous relapse. He was later called as pastor of the Christian Church, Lisbon, and later was pastor of the Calvary Christian Church, Pittsburgh. Here he entered the University of Pittsburgh for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, studying psychology and the origin and growth of life. On account of the failing health of his parents, he returned to Ohio and took pastorate in the Methodist Episcopal Church at various places in the Eastern Ohio Conferences for six years. He is now retired and devotes his time to the writing of religious topics of the day. Reverend Pike has two daughters: Ethel Gladys, born Dec. 29, 1891, and Dorotha Esther, born Aug. 4, 1894. They were both graduated from Lisbon High School and attended Mount Union College and the University of Syracuse. Dorotha Esther Pike married Everett Elliott Mumau, Aug. 6, 1916. He is a native of Garrettsville, Ohio, and was graduated from Hiram College, Washington State University, and Case School of Applied Science, HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 779 Cleveland. He is a structural and civil engineer at Beaver, Pa. Mr. and Mrs. Mumau have three sons : Everett, Jr., born July 26, 1918 ; John, born Aug. 1, 1920 ; and James, born March 27, 1923. Ethel Gladys Pike received the degree of Bachelor of Music at the University of Syracuse in 1919. She was married April 3, 1920, to James M. Paisley, of Paisley, Scotland. He is a graduate of the University of Glasgow. Mr. and Mrs. Paisley are residents of Syracuse, N. Y., where he is engaged in the banking business. John H. Hinchliffe, who ranks among the prominent and influential business men of Lisbon, is a native of Lisbon. He was born June 12, 1878, and is a son of George T. and Sarah (Morrison) Hinchliffe. George T. Hinchliffe, deceased, was a Civil War veteran. He was born in Yorkshire, England, and at the age of 17 years came to the United States and settled in Lisbon where he was employed at his trade as a dyer. He served throughout the Civil War with Company B, 19th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and was captured and held as a prisoner in the Libby and Andersonville prisons. He was twice wounded, but after recovery returned to the service. He died in 1900, and his wife died in 1888. They are buried in Lisbon. To Mr. and Mrs. Hinchliffe were born 13 children, as follows: George W., deceased ; Jennie ; Margaret, deceased ; James R., lives in Cleveland ; Sarah, Anna ; John, deceased ; Addie; J. B.; Hugh G. ; John H., the subject of this sketch ; Harry ; and Charles H. John H. Hinchliffe attended the public schools of Lisbon and began his business career as a driver for a local laundry concern. He later operated a newspaper agency and confectionery business for several years, and in December, 1904, established his present business known as The Hinchliffe Agency, dealer in real estate and general insurance. On June 21, 1899, Mr. Hinchliffe was united in marriage with Miss Nora J. Zimmerman, the daughter of David and Mary Zimmerman. They have three children : Esther ; John Eyler ; and Iris ; the two latter are students. Esther married Lester Sexton, they have one son, Lester Walter Sexton. Politically Mr. Hinchliffe is a Republican. He served as mayor of Lisbon from 1908 until 1910, as a member of the city council from 1904 780 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY until 1908, and as Columbiana County commissioner from 1917 until 1923. He is a member of the Reformed Church, the Masonic and Elks lodges, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and is President of the Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Hinchliffe is a public spirited citizen and holds the high regard of all who know him. E. A. Nelson is one of Lisbon's well known young men, where he is station agent for the Erie Railroad. He was born at Ridgeway, Pa., Nov. 25, 1895, and is the son of M. O. and Hannah (Anderson) Nelson, residents of Warren, Ohio. Mr. Nelson is a general farmer. After completing his schooling at Warren, Ohio, E. A. Nelson taught school for three years in that city, after which he entered the employ of the Erie Railroad at Phalanx, Ohio. He was located at Mantua, Ohio, for one year and since Jan. 1, 1924, has been serving as local agent at Lisbon. Four men are employed in this office: J. E. Maskrey, chief clerk ; Gene Webber, clerk ; Fred Ball, yard clerk ; and E. A. Nelson. On Feb. 7, 1925, Mr. Nelson was united in marriage with Miss Anna Morris, of Lisbon, the daughter of John and Anna Morris. Politically, Mr. Nelson is a Republican. He holds membership in the Christian Church, the Masonic Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and American Legion. He is held in high esteem by all who know him. Mr. Nelson served during the World War from May, 1917, until February, 1919. He was a member of Company B, 47th Infantry. He saw service in France and was gassed in the battle of the Argonne Forrest. He was also engaged in the St. Mihiel Drive. A. C. Robbins is a progressive and enterprising business man of Rochester, where he is a member of the East End Garage Company. He was born in Carroll County, Nov. 24, 1870, and is a son of William and Philena (Freed) Robbins. The father is deceased and the mother lives in Rochester. A. C. Robbins attended the public schools at East Rochester, after which he was engaged in the carpenter trade for 20 years. In 1919 he HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 781 established his present business. H. C. Hawkins was admitted to partnership on January 1, 1925. They carry a complete line of automobile accessories, tires, oils and gas, and do general machine and repair work. They occupy a frame building 20x80 and have a well established business. On Nov. 20, 1895, Mr. Robbins was married to Miss Bertha A. Spore, a daughter of Cornelius and Susan (Crowl) Spore. Mr. Spore was a farmer of Paris Township, Stark County, Ohio. Mr. and Mrs. Robbins have five children: Helen, married H. C. Hawkins, manager of Andalusia Dairy Company, and they have two children: Charles and James ; E. A., who lives at Alliance, is employed by the Drake Furniture Company. He married Doris Hayman and they have a son, Robert ; Donald, who is with the Pennsylvania Railroad ; Salem, married Hilda Leatherbery, and they have three children, Alvin, Leonard and Virginia ; Arnold, at home; and Marjorie, a high school student. Mr. Robbins has served as township assessor for four years, and as township treasurer for eight years, and for many years as a member of the school board. He belongs to the Masonic Lodge No. 151 Minerva, and the Grotto at Canton. In politics Mr. Robbins is a Republican. Alpheus Arter, retired, is among the highly esteemed and representative citizens of Lisbon, where he has spent his entire life. He was born in this city in 1841, the son of Jacob Arter. Jacob Arter was among the first settlers of Lisbon, having come here in 1830 from his birthplace in York County, Pa. He engaged in the saddlery and harness making business and established a business which was later carried on by his son and grandsons. He is deceased and is buried in Lisbon. Alpheus Arter was reared and educated in Lisbon and ranks among the pioneer business men of this section. Besides his harness and saddlery business he founded the Arter Manufacturing Company in 1895, which is now known as Arter Sons' Company. Mr. Arter is a stockholder in the Peoples' Bank of Lisbon and is actively connected with various other business institutions of the city. Mr. Arter was married three times. His first wife was a Miss Huston, three children were born to this union: Frank, Lyman and Mrs. 782 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY Carrie Ramsey, all of whom live in Lisbon. Mr. Arter's second wife was Sarah Hamilton. She died 1891; to this union six children were born: Harry G., a sketch of whom appears in this volume ; Dora M.; Minnie C.; James S.; Robert, of Lisbon, Ohio, and Allen who was killed while serving in the World War and is buried in France. Mr. Arter's present wife was Nannie Shaw ; no children have been born to this union. Alpheus Arter served in Company C, Eighty-seventh Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. Mr. Arter is a Republican and is widely known in Columbiana County. Harry G. Arter is among the progressive and successful business men of Lisbon, where he is engaged in the leather goods business. He was born in this city, May 26, 1879, and is the son of Alpheus and Sarah (Hamilton) Arter. A complete sketch of Alpheus Arter appears elsewhere in this history. Harry G. Arter received his education in the public schools of Lisbon and when a young man learned the harness making trade in his father's shop. In partnership with his brothers he now conducts the leather goods business, known as Arter Sons Company, which was founded by his father in 1895. On Oct. 28, 1905, Mr. Arter was united in marriage with Miss Kittie James of Lisbon, the daughter of Edward and Mary James. Mr. James died in 1921 and his wife resides in Lisbon. Mr. and Mrs. Arter have a son, Alpheus E., born May 21, 1910. Mr. Arter is a Republican, a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Kiwanis Club. He is esteemed throughout the community as a substantial and reliable citizen. C. E. Donnalley, a progressive and well known young business man of Lisbon, is a native of Columbiana County. He was born in this city, July 28, 1899, and is the son of E. S. and Carrie (Culler) Donnalley. E. S. Donnalley was born in Elk Run Township, Columbiana County, in 1875, and his wife, also a native of that township, was born in 1880. For a number of years Mr. Donnalley engaged in general farming and HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 783 later was a miner. In 1915 he entered the employ of the Wright Manufacturing Company, Lisbon, with whom he has since been identified. He resides at Lisbon. The Donnalley family hold membership in the Christian Church. C. E., the subject of this sketch, is the only child. C. E. Donnalley was educated in the public and high schools of Lisbon and attended Mount Union College. He learned the machinist's trade in the employ of the Wright Manufacturing Company, with whom he remained until 1924, when he purchased the business of F. C. Davis. Mr. Donnalley deals in wall papers, paints, and hardware supplies and carries a complete line of these goods. On Nov. 2, 1922, Mr. Donnalley was married to Miss Elizabeth Davis, of Lisbon, and they have a son, Gail Frederick, born Jan. 17, 1924. Mr. Donnalley is a Republican, and is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge and Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Clyde V. Hadley is a progressive and enterprising business man of Lisbon and a veteran of the World War. He was born at Washingtonville, Columbiana County, Sept. 18, 1887, and is the son of Arthur and Minnie (Jones) Hadley, both deceased. Clyde V. Hadley was educated in the public schools of Washingtonville, Salem and Lisbon, and for several years was employed by A. Arter & Company of Lisbon. He was later an electrical engineer with the Youngstown & Shenango River Power Company at Youngstown, the National Brass & Copper Company of Lisbon, and the Saratoga Fire Clay Company at Lisbon. He served throughout the World War in France with the Motor Transport Corps, Fourth Division. He established his present business in 1921 and in August, 1925, the erection of his new salesroom and garage was completed on East Lincoln Way. Mr. Hadley does general repair work, and deals in automobile accessories, gasoline, and oils. On June 21, 1921, Mr. Hadley was united in marriage with Miss Ethel T. Todd, of Columbiana, the daughter of Harry and Elizabeth Todd. Mr. Hadley is affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Masonic Lodge and American Legion. He is a Republican and is well known throughout the community. 784 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY W. Edwin Davidson is a veteran of the World War and a prominent young man of Columbiana County. He was born on a farm one mile east of Kensington, Oct. 28, 1895, and is the son of William E. and Sarah (Starkey) Davidson. William E. Davidson, deceased, was a native of Columbiana County. He was born in Hanover Township, Oct. 27, 1852, the son of James and Elizabeth (Britton) Davidson, early settlers of Columbiana County. William E. Davidson was a prosperous farmer and served as postmaster of Kensington for 17 years. He died July 11, 1925. His wife resides in Kensington. To Mr. and Mrs. Davidson the following children were born : Bessie M., Harry, Hazel, who married Fred Ash of Chicago, W. Edwin, the subject of this sketch ; Bruce, and DeNelda, married Fred Flint, of Minerva. W. Edwin Davidson received his education in the schools of Kensington, and at an early age entered the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad in a clerical position. He was later employed by the American Sheet & Tin Plate Company at Chester, West Virginia. On May 17, 1917, Mr. Davidson volunteered for service in the World War and served in France for more than a year. He saw service in the St. Mehiel Drive and the Meuse Argonne. He enlisted as a member of Troop E, 16th Cavalry, but was transferred to Company B, 5th Ammunition Train, 5th Division. He was discharged at Camp Sherman, Ohio, July 30, 1919. Since February, 1920, Mr. Davidson has served as postmaster of Kensington. In politics Mr. Davidson is identified with the Republican party. He is a member of the Christian Church, the Masonic Lodge, and the Disabled American Veterans Association of the World War. Dr. Walter Charles Nevin has been a successful and well known physician and surgeon of Lisbon for the past 35 years. He was born near New Waterford in Columbiana County, Sept. 1, 1861, the son of John and Deuira (Brewster) Nevin. John Nevin, deceased, was a native of Columbiana County and was a prosperous merchant and farmer of Middleton and Center townships for a number of years. He died Jan. 22, 1916. His wife was the daughter of John T. Brewster, and was born in Petersburg, Columbiana County, in 1841. She resides with her son, Dr. Nevin, the subject of this sketch. HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 785 Dr. Walter Charles Nevin was reared in Lisbon and attended the schools of this place, as well as Geneva Falls and Bellevue, N. Y. He was graduated from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, in 1890, and has since been engaged in the practice of his profession in Lisbon. On Jan. 28, 1892, Doctor Nevin was united in marriage with Miss Della Morrow, of Lisbon, the daughter of Robert and Della (McMichael) Morrow, both deceased. Doctor and Mrs. Nevin have a son, Bruce Morrow, born June 6, 1903, lives in Lisbon, Ohio. Doctor Nevin is a Republican, a member of the United Presbyterian Church, and has served as a member of the board of health and is a member of the Columbiana County Medical Society and the American Medical Association. He is a progressive man and is held in highest esteem throughout the county. Dr. Seward Harris is a prominent young physician of Lisbon. He was born in Lodi, Seneca County, New York, Oct. 27, 1883, and is the son of Abraham W. and Minnie B. (Brooks) Harris. Abraham W. Harris was born in New York state and followed farming and stock raising during his active life. His wife is also a native of that state. They were the parents of three children, as follows: Herbert and John B., both living in New York state ; and Seward, the subject of this sketch. Seward Harris was graduated from the public schools of Cortland, N. Y., after which he followed teaching for four years. He then entered the University of Michigan from which he received his degree as Doctor of Medicine in 1912. The following year he spent at Saint Elizabeth Hospital, Dayton, Ohio. He began the practice of his profession in Lisbon on July 1, 1913, and is located at 10 North Park Avenue. On Sept. 6, 1911, Doctor Harris was united in marriage with Miss Jane Bodine, of Ovid, N. Y., the daughter of Joseph and Mariah (Jones) Bodine. Before her marriage Mrs. Harris was a teacher for six years. She died Nov. 30, 1922, and is buried in Lisbon. Mr. and Mrs. Abraham W. Harris are now living retired in Lisbon. Doctor Harris is a Republican, a member of the Presbyterian Church, and belongs to the Odd Fellows of Lisbon, the Masonic Lodge, Blue Lodge (13)V2 786 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY of Salem, and the Shrine at Cleveland. He is a member of the Columbiana County Society and the Phi Chi Fraternity. Doctor Harris is an excellent citizen and merits the high esteem in which he is held by the community. W. J. and V. C. Barlow, who are successfully engaged in the grocery business at Lisbon, are substantial citizens of Columbiana County. They are the sons of Richard and Elizabeth (Underwood) Barlow. Richard Barlow was born in England in 1832 and when a young man came to this country and settled in Lisbon, where he was employed in the old wooden mill. In later life he engaged in general farming in Center Township and died in 1912. His wife, a native of Columbiana County, died in 1918. To Mr. and Mrs. Barlow the following children were born : Sadie, deceased ; Alice, married Frank Riddle, lives at Lisbon ; Effie, married H. J. Hollinger, lives at Lisbon ; W. J., associated in the grocery business with his brother in Lisbon ; Linnie, married Edward Cassidy, lives at Mobile, Ala. ; and V. C., the subject of this sketch. W. J. Barlow attended the district schools of Columbiana County and was engaged in various occupations until 1907 when with his brother, V. C., they established their store at 135 West Washington Street, Lisbon, Ohio. W. J. Barlow was married April 4, 1903 to Nora B. Johnson who was born in Elk Run Township, the daughter of John M. and Anna (Scott) Johnson, natives of Columbiana County. The latter now resides in Elk Run Township. Two children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Bar-low : Bernice E., born Feb. 14, 1904, a graduate of Lisbon High School and Kent State College, is now a teacher in the Lisbon Schools ; and Frances, born Nov. 29, 1909 is a graduate of the Lisbon High School. Mr. Barlow is a member of the Masons, Junior Order of American Mechanics, the Christian Church and is a Republican. V. C. Barlow was educated in the public schools of Lisbon and Northeastern Ohio Normal School, which was located at Canfield, Ohio. He engaged in teaching school in Center Township for four years and in 1907, with his brother, W. J., established their present business. Barlow Brothers are well known dealers of high grade groceries and meats. On Aug. 22, 1907, V. C. Barlow was united in marriage with Miss Margaret Williams, of Wayne Township, Columbiana County, the HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 787 daughter of Minas and Elizabeth Williams, both deceased. They have a daughter, Janet Elizabeth, born Nov. 6, 1913. Politically V. C. Barlow is a Republican. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Masonic Lodge, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Kiwanis Club. The Barlow brothers are public spirited citizens and hold the high regard of all who know them. P. W. Freshley. Among the most prosperous and well known farmers and stockmen of Columbiana County is P. W. Freshley of Knox Township. He was born in this township, March 1, 1876, and is the son of Jesse and Scyrmantha (Ruff) Freshley. Jesse Freshley, who is widely known as an extensive farmer and stockman, is also a native of Knox Township, born in 1851, and the son of John and Mary (Miller) Freshley, who settled in Columbiana County about 1825. The Freshley family are of German descent. They have always been interested in general farming and are among the largest land owners of this section. Scyramantha (Ruff) Freshley was born in Knox Township in 1858, the daughter of Hiram Ruff, pioneer of Home-worth. To Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Freshley the following children were born: Edith, the widow of Austin Sanor, resides at home with parents; P. W., the subject of this sketch ; Daisy, the wife of Lyman Marietta, Alliance, Ohio ; Edcher, Cleveland ; Homer, resides in Hanoverton, Ohio; Owen, lives in Knox Township ; John, Knox Township; Olive May, deceased; Monroe, Knox Township ; Estella, widow of Walter E. Bedford, resides at Limaville, and Allen and Ellen, twins. Allen lives in Knox Township and Ellen married Chester Stoffer, Beloit, Ohio. P. W. Freshley grew up no his father's farm and received his education in the schools of Knox Township, Mt. Union College and Ada College. He taught school for several terms, later engaged in the mercantile business at Homeworth, and for a number of years has followed general farming and stock raising. He operates 55 acres of land and his home is one of the finest residences in the township. On Dec. 18, 1906, Mr. Freshley was united in marriage with Miss Dora Unger, a native of this township, and the daughter of Charles and Mary (Randolph) Unger. Mr. and Mrs. Unger reside in Knox Township 788 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY opposite the Freshley farm. Seven children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Freshley, as follows : Ruth A., born Sept. 27, 1907, was graduated from Alliance High School in 1924, now studies and teaches music ; Donald Earl, born April 13, 1909 ; Atlee Pomerene, born March 4, 1911; Wilson Bryan, born Jan. 21, 1914 ; Wendall Wayne, born Jan. 25, 1920 ; and Dwight Lowell, born June 27, 1924. Mr. Freshley and his family hold membership in the Methodist Church at Winona. He is a Democrat and takes an active interest in the affairs of the community in which he has spent his entire life. C. E. Gross, of Homeworth, is among the prominent and successful business men of Columbiana County. He was born in Knox Township, Nov. 28, 1869, and is a son of John and Mary (Schaeffer) Gross. John Gross, deceased, was a native of Germany, and the son of John and Fredericka Gross. The Gross family emigrated to the United States at an early date and settled on land in Knox Township, Columbiana County. John Gross engaged in general farming and stock raising and operated 96 acres of land. Mr. and Mrs. Gross, deceased, were the parents of the following children : Matilda, and Christian deceased ; Lydia married Isaac Hesstand, both deceased ; Jacob, lives in Knox Township ; Amanda, married Andrew Yagley, lives at Paris Center, Ohio ; C. E., the subject of this sketch ; and William, in partnership with C. E. Gross, lives at Homeworth. C. E. Gross spent his boyhood in Knox Township and engaged in farming with his father until the latter's death. He then established a business at Homeworth, which is known as the Gross Brothers Lumber Company. It is the only business of its kind in this section and they are dealers in hardware and builders supplies. A contracting business is also conducted by Gross Brothers and they employ a large force of carpenters, masons, etc. Mr. Gross was married on Jan. 19, 1890 to Miss Nancy Catherine Yeagley, of Knox Township, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Yeagley, both deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. Gross was born a daughter, Elva Luella, born Jan. 26, 1893. She married Jesse W. Freidley, who lives at Homeworth, where he is connected with Gross Brothers Lumber HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 789 Company. They have had two children: Glenwood, died in infancy ; and Russell, born May 7, 1913. Mr. Gross is a member of the Presbyterian Church and the Masonic Lodge. He is a Republican and stands high in the esteem of his fellow citizens. He served two terms as township clerk of Knox Township. D. F. Hahn, a well known citizen of Columbiana County, who is extensively engaged in farming and stock raising in Knox Township, was born on the farm where he resides and is a son of Hiram H. and Elizabeth (Aspey) Hahn. Hiram H. Hahn was born in Starke County, Ohio, in 1841, the son of Adam Hahn, a pioneer settler of Columbiana County. Hiram H. Hahn taught school in early life and later became interested in general farming in Knox Township. He served throughout the Civil War and was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. He died in 1901 at Homeworth, where he had lived retired. His wife was born in Columbiana County, May 30, 1844, the daughter of Joshua and Eliza Aspey. Mr. Aspey was born Dec. 1, 1819, and died Sept. 21, 1888. His wife was born March 31, 1824, and died April 8, 1905. Mrs. Hiram H. Hahn died Dec. 23, 1911. To Hiram H. and Elizabeth (Aspey) Hahn were born five children: Clara, born June 18, 1870, died March 3, 1896, was the wife of Ira Kimes ; D. F., the subject of this sketch ; Allen, born Oct. 31, 1873, married Mary Pentz, lives at Alliance, Ohio ; Vernon, born Oct. 20, 1881, married Dora Glass, lives at Waynesburg, Ohio ; and Irma, born Jan. 11, 1884, married Marion Mangus, lives near Alliance, Ohio. D. F. Hahn received his education in the schools of Knox Township and Mount Union. He engaged in teaching for 12 years and has been interested in farming and stockraising since 1902. Since 1910 Mr. Hahn has specialized in the breeding of registered Jersey cattle and owns one of the finest stock farms in Columbiana County. He is vice president of the Columbiana County Farm Bureau. In 1893 Mr. Hahn was married to Miss Elizabeth Heastand, who was born in 1876, and died in 1906, leaving four children : Ralph, born Sept. 13, 1894, a World War veteran, lives at Alliance, Ohio ; Gertrude Mildred, born Aug. 20, 1896, married Russell Fryfogle, lives at Sebring, Ohio, and 790 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY they have two children, Louise Jane and Russell, Jr. ; Clare Franklin, born Feb. 3, 1898, lives at Alliance, Ohio ; and Wade H., born Feb. 18, 1902, lives at Alliance, Ohio. Mr. Hahn was married the second time to Miss Rose Wallace, who was born in Stark County, Ohio, July 10, 1874. She died May 13, 1917, leaving four sons : Lynn L., born April 17, 1909, lives at Alliance, Ohio ; Clark Clinton, born Feb. 18, 1911; Dale Dallas, born April 14, 1913 ; and Glen R., born April 6, 1915. Mr. Hahn was married for the third time to Miss Nellie McGee, who was born at Hanover, Ohio, Sept. 6, 1875, the daughter of Patrick and Louise (McCartney) McGee, both deceased. Mr. McGee died May 17, 1917, and his wife died in 1911. Mr. Hahn is a member of the United Brethren Church and is a Democrat. Harry A. Hahn is among the successful and representative young business men of Homeworth, where he is identified with the Hahn Brothers Motor Company. He was born at Moultrie, West Township, Columbiana County, Sept. 27, 1896, the son of Daniel K. and Cora (Willison) Hahn. Daniel K. Hahn was born in West Township, Columbiana County in 1868, the son of Marion Hahn, a native of Columbiana County and a veteran of the Civil War. Daniel K. Hahn has spent his entire life at Moultrie where he is engaged in the painting business. His wife was born at New Alexandria, Columbiana County, in 1870. Mr. and Mrs. Hahn are the parents of the following children : Ronald, died at the age of five years ; Clytice, married Frank Barnhart, lives in Washington Township, Stark County, Ohio ; Hazel, twin sister of Clytice, married Ray Kridler, lives at Homeworth ; Harry A., the subject of this sketch ; Marion A., associated in business with his brother at Homeworth, married Mabel Along ; Norma, lives at Alliance, Ohio ; Laverne, Carlos and Florence, all at home. After his graduation from the public schools of Moultrie, Harry A. Hahn was associated in business with his father. He spent several years at Alliance, Ohio, where he learned the machinist trade and at the outbreak of the World War he enlisted and served overseas. In 1921 Mr. Hahn engaged in the automobile business at Homeworth. Hahn Brothers Motor Company are the authorized Ford dealers of this district and have an up to date salesroom and garage. HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 791 On Feb. 17, 1920, Mr. Hahn was married to Miss Helen Ball of Damascus, the daughter of George A. and Clara (Crawford) Ball. Mr. Ball resides at Canton, Ohio. His wife died March 15, 1924. Mr. and Mrs. Hahn have had two sons, Robert Arnold, born May 27, 1922 ; and Richard Lowell, born April 8, 1925, died in infancy. Mr. Hahn is a Republican and a member of the Christian Church of New Franklin. E. A. Tinsman is among the reliable and substantial business men of Salem, where he is president and general manager of the Salem Rubber Company. He is a native of Ohio, born in Norton Township, Summit County, April 12, 1875, and the son of Isaac and Mary (Myers) Tinsman. Isaac Tinsman, deceased, was a farmer during his life. For a number of years before his death he lived retired at Akron, Ohio. He died in 1915. After completing his schooling in the public schools of Akron, E. A. Tinsman entered the employ of the Goodrich Rubber Company of that city, with whom he remained for four years. He was then connected with the Diamond Rubber Company for 13 years, first as assistant mill foreman and later as factory foreman: His next position was as assistant superintendent of the factory of the Portage Rubber Company and he was later promoted to factory manager. In March, 1919, Mr. Tinsman became connected with the Standard Tire Company of Willoughby, Ohio, as vice president and general manager, which positions he held until his present connection in 1921. The Salem Rubber Company ranks among the leading industries of its kind in Columbiana County. It was formerly the Porter Rubber Company and in November, 1921, was reorganized as the Salem Rubber Company. They are manufacturers of high grade tires and tubes and carry on an extensive trade throughout the United States, having their products handled by such well known firms as Macy's and Wanamaker's, New York City ; William Taylor Son & Company, Cleveland ; Marshall Field & Company, Chicago ; and Hudson Bond in Detroit, Mich. Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Minneapolis are also large centers of distribution for the Salem tires and tubes. On April 26, 1900, Mr. Tinsman was united in marriage with Miss Clara Jane Haer, of Akron, Ohio, and the daughter of Jacob and Marie 792 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY Haer, residents of that city. They have two daughters : Viola May, married M. P. Ellsworth, who is connected with the Salem Rubber Company, was graduated from Western Reserve University, Cleveland, in 1923 and Ruby, a graduate of Willoughby High School, and now a student at the University of Wisconsin. Politically, Mr. Tinsman is a Republican. He holds membership in the Grace Reformed Church of Akron, and belongs to the Salem Chamber of Commerce, Salem Golf Club, and Rotary Club. L. S. Ward, secretary and treasurer of the Columbiana County Mutual Insurance Company, Lisbon, ranks among the representative business men and highly esteemed citizens of Columbiana County. He was born at Franklin Square, Salem Township, Columbiana County, Dec. 7, 1866, and is the son of Levi and Angeline (George) Ward, both deceased. Mr. Ward was a prosperous farmer of Salem Township for many years. He and his wife are buried in the Kemble Church Cemetery. L. S. Ward attended the district schools of Salem Township and Mount Hope Academy, one of the early schools of Columbiana County. He taught school for several years and was later identified with the American Sewer Pipe Company, and the American Tin Plate Company at Lisbon, Ohio and Chester, W. Va. Since 1905 Mr. Ward has been connected with the Columbiana County Mutual Insurance Company in various capacities and since 1922 he has been secretary and treasurer. On April 23, 1890, Mr. Ward was united in marriage with Miss Anna Rees, of Lisbon, the daughter of John and Mary Rees, both deceased. They have a daughter, Esther, who is the wife of Dr. McCandless, of Lisbon, a sketch of whom appears elsewhere in this history. To Dr. and Mrs. McCandless has been born a daughter, Dorothy Jane. Mr. Ward is a Republican, a member of the Presbyterian Church, Masonic Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and Kiwanis Club. The Columbiana County Mutual Insurance Company of Lisbon was founded March 2, 1837, and is among the oldest and most reliable insurance businesses in this section of the country. They are writers of general insurance and during the year of 1925 carried on $15,155,466 worth of business. The company operates in Ohio exclusively and has 100 HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 793 agents as its representatives. The original officers and directors of the company were: Benjamin Hanna, Samuel Shriner, Peter Spiker, J. H. Shields, Godfrey Beaumont, Henry Trunic, William Carey, Daniel Whitacre, Levi Hanna, Jonathan Hamilton, Jr., Joshua Hanna, John Armstrong, William Heiman, James McElroy, and William D. Lepper. The company's first policy was issued by Erastus Eells, first president, to Martin Heiman, and covered household goods. The present officers of the Columbiana County Mutual Insurance Company are: S. D. Longshore, president; and Mr. Ward, secretary and treasurer. The directors are: S. D. Longshore, Mr. Ward, E. M. Crosser, C. W. Huston, R. J. Wilcoxen, I. C. Beam, J. J. Bennett, and Dr. C. McCandless. Stephen C. Jessup is among the well known and highly esteemed business men of Salem, where he is owner and proprietor of the Jessup Pattern Works. He was born in Lakewood, Ohio, Oct. 7, 1866, and is the son of Samuel J. and Mary Jeanette (Minor) Jessup. Samuel J. Jessup, deceased, was a native of Stamford, Conn., spent greater part of his life in New York City as also did his wife. He was connected with the Cleveland Rolling Mills as superintendent until his death in 1868. His wife died in 1922. After completing his early education in the public schools of Lakewood, Stephen C. Jessup attended the Forest City Business College, Cleveland. His first position was with the Cleveland Ship Building Company, now the Great Lakes Ship Building Company. He was later employed by the Artie Ice Machine Company, where he learned his trade as a pattern maker. In 1888 he came to Salem, where he bcame associated with the Buckeye Engine Company in charge of the pattern department. At the age of 22 years Mr. Jessup was put in charge of the company's shop and he remained in their employ until 1914, when the plant was sold. He then took over the pattern department of the company and conducted it himself. Two years later he leased the Peoples Lumber Company and operated his shop there until the erection of his present fine plant on Roosevelt Avenue in September, 1919. About 40 men are employed in the plant, which occupies 19,750 square feet of factory space. Mr. Jessup does work both in wood and metal and numbers the following 794 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY firms among his leading customers: The Hoover-Owens-Rentshler Company, Hamilton, Ohio ; Dean Bros. Steam Pump Company, Indianapolis, Ind.; Gould Coupler Company of New York ; American Steel Foundry ; Ohio Steel Works, Lima, Ohio; James P. Clow & Son, Chicago, Ill. ; and the Machined Steel Casting Company, Alliance, Ohio. On Sept. 25, 1901, Mr. Jessup was married to Miss Loretta M. Zimmerman, the daughter of David and Mary Zimmerman, both deceased. They have a daughter, Mary Elizabeth, born Sept. 19, 1907. Mr. Jessup is a member of the Episcopal Church, and belongs to the Masonic Bodies, Rotary Club, Salem Country Club, and Chamber of Commerce. He is a Republican and an excellent citizen of Columbiana County. R. E. Kridler, a substantial and well known citizen of Homeworth, is a native of Columbiana County. He was born at Leetonia, Nov. 3, 1889, and is the son of Charles and Lulu (Hendricks) Kridler. Charles Kridler, deceased, was a native of Fairview Township, Columbiana County. He engaged in general farming during his life and is now deceased. His wife, who was born at Leetonia, lives at Columbus, Ohio. Two children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Kridler: Hazel, married Charles Kelley, lives at Columbus, Ohio ; and R. E., the subject of this sketch. R. E. Kridler spent his boyhood at Leetonia and attended the public schools. He was also a student in the public schools of Columbiana and Canfield, Ohio. He was 12 years old when his father died and shortly afterward he was forced to leave school in order to support himself. He learned the chair making trade at Columbus, Ohio, and later worked in the potteries of Sebring, Ohio. He then lived at Alliance, Ohio, for some time, after which he removed to Homeworth, where he now conducts a billiard parlor. On Aug. 1, 1913, Mr. Kridler was married to Miss Hazel Hahn, the daughter of Daniel and Cora Hahn, residents of West Township, Columbiana County, and members of a prominent pioneer family of this section. Mr. and Mrs. Kridler have two sons: Norman Lee, born in 1914 ; and Chester LeRoy, born in 1918. Mr. and Mrs. Kridler are members of the Christian Church and are highly esteemed in the community. HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 795 James M. Thomas, who is successfully engaged in farming in Knox Township, was born on the farm where he resides, Aug. 20, 1863, and is a son of Eli and Rachel (Bushman) Thomas. Eli Thomas was born on the Thomas farm in Washington Township, Stark County, Ohio, the son of Jacob Thomas, a pioneer settler of Columbiana County. Eli Thomas engaged in general farming and stock raising during his entire life and owned 300 acres of land. He and his wife are deceased. They were the parents of the following children: David W., a farmer, lives in Knox Township, a sketch of whom appears in this history ; Mrs. Sarah Sanor, a widow, lives with her brother James M., the subject of this sketch ; George, died at the age of 22 years ; Hiram H., a farmer, lives in Knox Township ; Joseph, deceased ; Amanda Jane, died at the age of two years ; Clara Irene, deceased ; and Howard, deceased. James M. Thomas has spent his entire life on this farm, which he now owns. He operates 100 acres and specializes in dairy farming. His present modern home was erected in 1909. In 1884 Mr. Thomas was united in marriage with Miss Nancy Sanor, a native of West Township, Columbiana County, and the daughter of Samuel and Eliza (Stoffer) Sanor, both deceased. Politically Mr. Thomas is a Democrat and he is a member of the United Brethren Church of which he has served as deacon since 17 years of age. He has a wide acquaintance in Columbiana County. James P. Partlow is one of the progressive and highly esteemed young business men of Salem, where he is vice president and sales manager of the Justice Manufacturing Company. He was born at Athens, Ohio, March 30, 1891, and is the son of Elmer E. and Mary Elizabeth (VanEst) Partlow. Elmer E. Partlow resides in Salem with his family and is employed by the Salem China Company. James P. Partlow was reared and educated at East Liverpool and when a young man was employed by the Knowles Taylor & Knowles Pottery Company at that place. He then went to Columbus, Ohio, and four years later located in Salem, where he was connected with Castle & Beall, as a salesman for the Cleveland automobile. While in their employ he established an excellent selling record. On Nov. 23, 1923, the present 796 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY business was organized with the following officers: E. C. Castle, president ; James P. Partlow, vice president ; and A. T. Beall, secretary and treasurer. The above named men, together with Hiram S. Hendricks and H. L. McCarthy, constitute the board of directors of the company. The Justice Manufacturing Company are manufacturers and dealers of the Justice electric washing machine, which is sold throughout the nation. The business is incorporated at $90,000.00 and has a daily output of 20 washers. In its manufacture a 12 Anchor brand ringer is used, which is made by the Lovell Manufacturing Company of Erie, Pa., and a General Electric motor. On Dec. 24, 1910, Mr. Partlow was married to Miss Margaret Baxter, of East Liverpool, the daughter of Samuel J. and Samantha Baxter, residents of Salem. They are the parents of five children: Esther, born May 28, 1912 ; Frank, born May 22, 1915 ; Mary, born Nov. 16, 1917 ; James P., Jr., born Nov. 19, 1921; and Samuel, born Feb. 17, 1924. Mr. Partlow has a wide acquaintance in Columbiana County and is favorably known. Fred J. Culler, one of Washingtonville's enterprising young men, is a native of Columbiana County. He was born at Washingtonville, June 14, 1895, the son of Alonzo and Anna (Ashman) Culler. Alonzo Culler, deceased, was a substantial citizen of Washingtonville, where he engaged in the coal business for a number of years. Fred J. Culler is one of the following children born to his parents ; Florence, was a Red Cross nurse in the World War, lives in Pittsburgh ; Harry, lives in Akron, Ohio ; Fred J., the subject of this sketch ; Irma, at home ; Lloyd and Glenn live at Washingtonville ; Elmer, died in infancy and Albert, deceased. He served in the World War in Co. B, 348th Machine Battery, 91st Division, died after returning from army. After completing his schooling at Washingtonville and Leetonia, Fred J. Culler entered the employ of the Youngstown and Ohio River Railroad. He has remained with this company continuously and is now freight agent at Salem. Politically Mr. Culler is a Republican, and he is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge and Independent Order of Odd Fellows and has a wide acquaintance in the community in which he lives. HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 797 Frank H. Sebring, Jr., president of the Salem China Company, is a veteran of the World War and a member of one of the representative and well known families of Columbiana County. He was born in East Liverpool, March 1, 1889, and is the son of Frank A. and Emma (Harbison) Sebring. Frank A. Sebring, president of the Limoges China Company of Sebring, is well and favorably known in Ohio. He was born in Columbiana County and is the son of George and Elizabeth A. (Larkins) Sebring, the former a native of Beaver County, Pa., and the latter of Pittsburgh. At an early age Frank A. Sebring became associated with the pottery industry. The present business and plant, known as the Salem China Company, was purchased from the Standard Pottery Company in August, 1918, and reorganized Dec. 31, 1918, as the Salem China Company. It is a seven kiln pottery, with ample facilities for decorating their entire output. This plant, which is affiliated with the Sebring pottery interests at Sebring, Ohio, employs 275 people, and are manufacturers of high quality, popular priced dinner ware. The annual pay roll is approximately $400,000. The officers of the Salem China Company are: Frank H. Sebring, Jr., president and manager ; F. W. McKee, secretary ; Frank A. Sebring, of Sebring, chairman of the board of directors, and Charles L. Sebring, with S. I. Morley, and the above named constitute the board of directors. C. G. Herbert, for many years foreman of the W. S. George Pottery Company of East Palestine, is superintendent of the local plant ; George Olloman is manager of the decorating department ; F. C. Fowler, is production manager ; and John Davidson is foreman of the clay department. Frank H. Sebring, Jr., received his early education in the public schools of East Liverpool and Sebring, and attended Phillips Exeter Academy. He was graduated from Yale university in 1913 and has since been identified with the Sebring pottery interests, at Sebring and Salem. He is also secretary of the Crescent China Company, Alliance, Ohio ; secretary of the Limoges China Company, Sebring ; and a director of the First National Bank, Salem. In Sept. 1917, Mr. Sebring volunteered for service during the World War and was stationed at Camp Sherman, Ohio, in the Infantry for 18 months. On Sept. 5, 1917, Mr. Sebring was united in marriage with Miss Margaret Ramsey of Alliance, Ohio. She was educated in the schools of Alliance and attended Miss Bennett's School for Girls, New York. Mr. 798 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY and Mrs. Sebring have two children: Willis Ramsey, born Nov. 25, 1919 ; and Shirley Margaret, born Dec. 16, 1920. Mr. Sebring is affiliated with the Masonic and Elks lodges, and belongs to the Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, Salem Golf Club, Salem Country Club, Yale Club, Ohio Society, and Union Club of Cleveland. F. W. McKee, secretary of the Salem China Company, is a leading business man of Columbiana County. He was born in Mercer County, Pa., April 7, 1885, and is the son of S. E. and Lessie E. McKee. Mr. McKee resides at Sebring, where he is engaged in the electrical business. F. W. McKee spent his boyhood in East Palestine and at an early age became identified with the Sebring pottery interests. He has held his present position as secretary of the Salem China Company since 1918. In July, 20, 1906, Mr. McKee was married to Miss Hannah W. Wilson, of Pittsburgh, and they have three children : Ellsworth, Elizabeth and Virginia. Mr. McKee is a member of the United States Pottery Association and the Youngstown Association of Credit Men. He belongs to the Masonic Lodge, Rotary Club, Salem Golf Club, and Salem Country Club. Ira F. Mellinger, who is extensively engaged in the lumber business, with headquarters at Leetonia, ranks among the representative and successful business men of Columbiana County. He was born in this city, Dec. 21, 1870, and is the son of Henry C. and Catherine (Keyser) Mellinger. Henry C. Mellinger, deceased, was a pioneer lumber man of this section. He established the old Mellinger Lumber Company, which concern has been out of business since 1900. Both Mr. and Mrs. Mellinger are deceased. Ira F. Mellinger attended the schools of Leetonia and in 1888 was graduated from the local high school. In his early life he was associated with his father's business for ten years and in 1898 established his present business. Mr. Mellinger is a widely known wholesale and retail lumber dealer of Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia and carries on a business HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 799 of large volume. His three sons, Wilbur S., Henry Ross, and Edward W. are associated in business with him. On Dec. 31, 1891, Mr. Mellinger was married to Miss Effie M. Sitler, the daughter of Joseph M. and Ella M. (Walters) Sitler. They have three sons : Wilbur S., a graduate of Gettysburg College ; Henry Ross, a graduate of Lehigh University ; and Edward W., a graduate of Cornell University. Mr. Mellinger is a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Masonic Lodge and Shrine, and the Kiwanis Club. He is a Republican. The Mellinger family is widely known and highly esteemed throughout the county. William E. Warren. Numbered among the representative members of the bar of Columbiana County is William E. Warren, who is successfully engaged in the practice of law at Leetonia. He was born in Middleton Township, Columbiana County, March 7, 1865, the rn son of John B. and Lucy (Underwood) Warren. John B. Warren, deceased, was a veteran of the Civil War. He was a native of Little Bolton, Lancashire, England, and migrated to the United States in 1857. In September, 1861, Mr. Warren enlisted in Company D, 19th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and took an active part in the war until 1863 when he was discharged on account of physical disability. Mr. Warren was for many years a successful farmer of Middleton Township. There were eight children in the Warren family, as follows: Hannah, married Emmett Farr ; Mary, married John Kaminsky, lives at Salem ; Joseph, a farmer, lives in Fairfield Township ; William E., the subject of this sketch ; Lola, married Jonas Moreland ; Zula, deceased, was the wife of James Kridler ; Walter, chief of police of East Palestine ; and Effie Gilmore, lives at Lisbon. William E. Warren was educated in the common schools of Columbiana County and attended Mt. Hope Academy, Rogers, Ohio, and Cincinnati, Ohio, Law School. He read law in the office of C. S. Speaker, Lisbon. He was admitted to the bar of Ohio June 5, 1890, and to the United States District and Circuit Courts, Oct. 12, 1898. He has engaged in the practice of law in Leetonia since that time and from 1893 until 1914 served as city solicitor. He also served as post master of Leetonia from |
