800 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY July 1, 1914 to March 10, 1920. Mr. Warren was appointed Referee in Bankruptcy, Columbiana County, Nov. 1, 1920. On Jan. 12, 1890, Mr. Warren was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Fife, and they have a daughter, Pauline M., born Aug. 18, 1892. She married Clarence Bowser, and lives in Detroit, Mich. They have two children, Elizabeth and William. Mrs. Bowser was educated in the public schools of Leetonia, Mt. Union College and Ohio State University. Mr. Warren is a Democrat and is affiliated with the Knights of Pythias and Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He ranks among the prominent and influential citizens of the community. Dr. Hugh S. Maxwell, deceased, was a well known physician and surgeon of Lisbon. He was born at Rockville, Ind., July 3, 1879, and is the son of David H. and Anna Flora (Smith) Maxwell. David H. Maxwell, deceased, was a native of Bloomington, Ind., born in 1825, and the son of Dr. David Harvey Maxwell, who came to Indiana from Danville, Ky., during the early days and ranked among the most prominent physicians of his time. He was one of the founders of Indiana University and by many is known as the father of the University at Bloomington. His son, David H., studied law at the University of Indiana and was successful in the practice of his profession. His son. Howard, has carried on his extensive practice at Rockville, Ind., since his death, which occurred in 1903. His wife, who was born near Salem, Ohio, in 1838, died in 1912, and with her husband is buried at Rockville, Ind. To Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell four children were born: Judge David Howard, lives at Rockville, Ind.; Ralph Wilson, deceased ; Margaret Louise, died at the age of 16 years ; and Hugh S., the subject of this sketch. Dr. Hugh S. Maxwell spent his boyhood at Rockville, attended the public schools and was graduated from Indiana University in 1901. Three years later he received his degree as Doctor of Medicine from Rush Medical College and the following year was an interne at the Passavant Hospital, Pittsburgh. In 1907 he entered general practice at Clairton, Pa., and was also assistant physician there to Dr. A. W. Colcord, surgeon for the Carnegie Steel Company. He came to Lisbon in 1913 after having spent several years at Richmond, Ohio. During the period of the World HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 801 War Doctor Maxwell volunteered his services and was stationed at a Louisiana base hospital with the rank of captain. He was discharged in March, 1919, and has since been practicing in Lisbon. Doctor Maxwell had taken post graduate work at the Chicago Polyclinic and specialized in the treatment of diseases of the eye, ear and nose. On July 21, 1908, Doctor Maxwell was united in marriage with Miss Katherine Marie Probst, a native of Hartford, Wis., the daughter of Christian and Barbara (Foester) Probst. Before her marriage Mrs. Maxwell was engaged in nursing, having graduated from the Passavant Hospital at Pittsburgh, Pa. Five children have been born to Dr. and Mrs. Maxwell, as follows : Eugene Howard, born June 8, 1909, died in infancy ; Jean Ruth, born May 23, 1910 ; Martha Anna, born June 15, 1912 ; Mary Catherine, born March 2, 1915 ; and Virginia Rose, born Feb. 10, 1918. Politically, Doctor Maxwell was a Republican. He held membership in the Presbyterian Church, the Masonic Lodge, American Legion and Kiwanis Club. He was a member of the American Medical Association, The Columbiana County Medical Society, and was a member of the medical staff of the Salem City Hospital, Salem, Ohio. He was well known in Columbiana County and had a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. Doctor Maxwell died Oct. 31, 1925. Mrs. Maxwell now resides in Lisbon and is one of the highly esteemed women of Columbiana County. C. E. Holt is recognized as one of the leading business men of Leetonia, where he is connected With the Leetonia Tool Company as secretary and treasurer. He is a native of England, born at Ashton-Underlyne, Chestershire County, Dec. 14, 1878, the son of William and Marie (Byrom) Holt. William Holt came to the United States in 1880 and settled at Washingtonville, where he was employed by the Cherry Valley Furnace Company for many years. He now lives retired at Washingtonville, Columbiana County. His wife is deceased. C. E. Holt was reared and educated in Columbiana County. He worked in the mines of Washingtonville for 16 years. He has been identified with the Leetonia Tool Company since 1911 and has held his present position as secretary and treasurer since 1913. (14)V2 802 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY The Leetonia Tool Company, one of Columbiana County's well known industries, was established in May, 1907, by the following business men of Leetonia: H. T. Collins, J. I. Smith, R. W. Smith, C. S. Richards, and M. A. Collins. The present officers are as follows : John A. Floding, president ; E. E. Sitler, vice president ; C. E. Holt, secretary and treasurer ; A. F. Rauch, and P. R. Rauch, directors. The company, incorporated for $10,000, are well known manufacturers of miner's tools. On Nov. 16, 1901, Mr. Holt was married to Miss Loula B. Prior of Leetonia, the daughter of John and Emma Prior. Mr. Prior is deceased and his wife resides at Leetonia. To Mr. and Mrs. Holt have been born five sons: Charles, a graduate of Carnegie Institute of Technology, associated in business with his father, Eldon, also a graduate of Carnegie Institute of Technology, in business with his father ; Marcus, a graduate of Wittenburg College, in business with his father ; Ray and John, both at home. Mr. Holt and his family are members of the Lutheran Church, and he is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge, Knights of Pythias, and Kiwanis Club. He is a Republican. Walter L. Peet, the efficient and well known postmaster at Leetonia. Ohio, is a native of that town, where he was born April 14, 1885. He is a son of John and Mary (Lineker) Peet, pioneer residents of Columbiana County. John Peet has been associated with the Hanna Furnace Company in Leetonia for the past 41 years. Walter L. Peet received his education in the public schools and from high school he started work in a barber shop. After mastering that trade he bought and successfully conducted a shop of his own for 10 years. On Jan. 1, 1916, he received an appointment as clerk in the local postoffice, and on Feb. 8, 1924, was appointed by President Coolidge as postmaster. The following people are employed in the Leetonia postoffice: Fred W. Floding, M. J. Gaughan, Henry W. Tittsler and Emmor R. Wilson, city carriers; Maud M. Dyke, clerk ; Arthur L. Rudebock, Route No. 1; Joseph H. Wagenhouser, Route No. 2 ; and Dayton E. Stewart, Route No. 3. On June 14, 1909, Mr. Peet was united in marriage with Miss Lilly Hull, a native of England, who came to America on a visit in 1907. She HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 803 is a daughter of William and Jane Hull, natives of New Castle-on-Tyne, County Durham, England. Mr. and Mrs. Peet have one son, Willis, born May 2, 1910. Mr. Peet is a Republican. He is a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, and belongs to the I. O. O. F. and Kiwanis Club of Leetonia. He has a wide acquaintance and has always been regarded both socially and in his business relations as a valuable citizen of Columbiana County. Edward J. Dean, superintendent of M. A. Hanna Furnace Company, Leetonia, is among the well known and substantial citizens of Columbiana County. He was born at Leetonia, Jan. 17, 1877, and is the son of Anthony and Catherine (Dean) Dean. Anthony Dean, deceased, was for many years a resident of Leetonia, where he was also identified with the M. A. Hanna Furnace Company. His wife is also deceased. Edward J. Dean attended the parochial schools of Leetonia and began his business career as a laborer for the M. A. Hanna Furnace Company, with whom he has been identified for 32 years. He has served as superintendent since 1913. The local plant employs approximately 130 men. On Sept. 9, 1904, Mr. Dean was married to Miss Catherine Sheets of Leetonia, the daughter of Louis and Rose Sheets. Mr. and Mrs. Dean have six sons : Anthony and Edward, students at Notre Dame University Lawrence, Venard, Eugene and Paul, all at home. Mr. Dean is a Democrat, a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He is a reliable and efficient citizen of the community and has the esteem of his fellow citizens. Joseph Calladine is among the representative business men of Leetonia, where he is identified with the Acme Cultivator Company as secretary, treasurer and general manager. He was born in Washingtonville, Columbiana County, March 15, 1882, and is the son of Joseph and Eliza (Boston) Calladine, both deceased. After completing his schooling in Salem, Joseph Calladine learned the stove mounting trade and was later employed by the Buckeye Engine 804 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY Company, where he learned the machinist's trade. He was then connected with the W. J. Clarke Company of Salem for 19 years, the E. W. Bliss Company of Salem for three years, after which he became identified with the Acme Cultivator Company. On April 2, 1904, Mr. Calladine was united in marriage with Miss Nellie M. Nold, the daughter of Alpheus and Belle Nold, of Salem. They have a daughter, Florence. Mr. Calladine is a Republican, a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge. He also belongs to the Salem Country Club. The Acme Cultivator Company, which is incorporated for $50,000, is among the widely known industrial enterprises of Columbiana County. Its officers are: C. E. Greenamyer, president; C. J. Spotholt, vice president ; and Mr. Calladine, secretary, treasurer and general manager. The company's annual output is approximately 125 machines, which are sold at the price of $190.00 each. The plant occupies a modern factory building on West Main Street, Leetonia. Edward W. Holz ranks among the progressive and enterprising business men of Leetonia where he is engaged in the news and confectionery business. He was born at Columbiana, April 20, 1867, and is the son of Christopher and Elizabeth (Hinkle) Holz, both deceased. After completing his schooling in the public schools of Leetonia, Edward W. Holz worked in his father's store. He is now sole owner of this business, which was established in 1867. Mr. Holz carries a complete line of books, stationery, sporting goods, confectionery, and has a fine news stand. He also deals in tobaccos and cigars. The business is located at 267 Front Street. On Oct. 8, 1896, Mr. Holz was united in marriage with Miss Margaret Karch, the daughter of Jacob and Philamena Karch, of Leetonia. They have two sons: William E., a graduate of Leetonia High School, Western Reserve University and Case School of Applied Science, Cleveland, lives at Canton, Ohio, where he is connected with the Ohio Bell Telephone Company ; and Emil C., lives at Leetonia and is superintendent of the city water works. HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 805 Politically, Mr. Holz is a Democrat. He has served as a member of the city council for several years and as township trustee for 18 years and also a member of the board of public affairs. He is a director of the Peoples Savings & Loan Company and is a substantial citizen of Columbiana County. Charles J. Spatholt has for many years been a prominent and successful business man of Leetonia, where he is engaged in the hardware business. He was born in Youngstown, Ohio, Feb. 17, 1862, and is a son of Charles and Mary (Gasser) Spatholt. Mr. Spatholt was a building contractor at Youngstown, Ohio, and is now deceased. Charles J. Spatholt attended the public schools of Youngstown and in 1895 established his present business in Leetonia, in partnership with his brother, John, who retired from the business in 1906. The Spatholt Hardware Company is among Leetonia's well established businesses and has been in its present location since February, 1925. They are dealers in hardware, electrical and automobile supplies, paints and oils, and also conduct. a tin shop. On Nov. 9, 1887, Mr. Spatholt was married to Miss Minnie Smith, and they have three children: Fred G.; Jeanette Louise, was graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1924 ; and Arthur J. Both of Mr. Spatholt's sons are associated in business with him. Mr. Spatholt is a Republican, a member of the St. Johns Lutheran Church and belongs to the Masonic Lodge, Kiwanis Club, and the Business Men's Club of Leetonia. He is well known and highly respected throughout the community where he has spent so many years. Carl R. Shive is a reliable young business man of Leetonia, where he is proprietor of the Leetonia General Service Company. He was born near Leetonia, March 15, 1892, and is the son of H. C. and Lydia (Sweitzer) Shive. Mr. and Mrs. Shive are residents of Leetonia, where he is employed as a Western Union operator. After completing his schooling, C. R. Shive was employed by the U. S. Nold, the Buckeye Engine Company and the E. W. Bliss Company, 806 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY having remained with the latter concern for 12 years. He was connected with the Briar Hill Steel Company as foreman for one year, served in the same capacity for the McKeefrey Iron Company for two years. He has since been interested in the garage business and in May, 1925, established his present business in partnership with J. M. Anglemyer. They are authorized Ford dealers and also handle the Chevrolet and Star cars. They operate a high class garage, and do expert repair work. In politics Mr. Shive, is an independent voter. He holds membership in the Lutheran Church and is a member of the Masonic Lodge. He has a wide acquaintance throughout Columbiana County and is well liked. E. M. Crosser is recognized as a representative business man and influential citizen of Lisbon, where he is connected with the Lisbon Sales Book Company as treasurer and manager. He was born on a farm two miles west of Lisbon, Nov. 7, 1859, and is the son of Harrison and Matilda (Scott) Crosser. Both Mr. and Mrs. Crosser are deceased and buried in Zion Cemetery, Lisbon. E. M. Crosser obtained his education in the district schools of Columbiana County and as a young man became interested in the dry goods business of D. C. Brown & Company, Lisbon. He removed to East Liverpool several years later where a partnership was formed with S. H. Porter, whose interest was later sold to D. M. O'Gilvie. Mr. Crosser gave up this business interest at the time of his election to county recorder, which office he capably filled for six years. He then purchased the Journal and Buckeye State, Lisbon newspapers, which he consolidated into the Daily Journal. The following year he disposed of this to the Buckeye Publishing Company and at that time engaged in the dry goods business at Lisbon, which was known as the Crosser Dry Goods Company. It was in 1915 that he became associated with the Lisbon Sales Book Company. In 1917 he was elected to the State Legislature and served four years. On July 6, 1882, Mr. Crosser was united in marriage with Miss Lilian Raney, and they have two daughters: Evelyn, married H. L. Deemer, assistant postmaster of Lisbon, and they have a daughter, Dorothy Denniston Deemer; and Helen, married James Paul Frew, of Lisbon, and they have a daughter, Janet Frew. HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 807 Mr. Crosser is a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Masonic Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Sons of Veterans, and Kiwanis Club. He is a Republican. The Lisbon Sales Book Company, which was founded in 1906 as the Bennett Register & Printing Company, is among the well established and leading business enterprises of Columbiana County. They are manufacturers and dealers in duplicate and triplicate sales books and carry on an extensive business throughout the United States through 300 agencies. About 35 people are employed in the local plant, which is equipped with modern machinery and the latest type printing presses. The officers of the Lisbon Sales Book Company are: J. J. Bennett, president; W. H. Hepburn, vice president ; E. M. Crosser, treasurer ; G. Mefort, superintendent and Robert Huston, secretary. Donald W. Hasbrouch is well and favorably known in Leetonia, where he is successfully engaged in the drug business. He was born at Corry, Pa., July 30, 1894, and is the son of C. C. and Mary (Scully) Hasbrouch. C. C. Hasbrouch, one of Lisbon's substantial business men, is a native of Corry, Pa. In 1899 he removed with his family to Lisbon, where he is now engaged in the automobile business as agent for the Hudson and Essex automobiles. D. W. Hasbrouch received his education in the public and high schools of Lisbon and was graduated from the School of Pharmacy, Western Reserve University, Cleveland, in 1920. He has since engaged in the drug business at Leetonia, and in October, 1921, purchased his present place of business from Fred Weidmyer, pioneer druggist of Columbiana County. The store is located at 236 Main Street and is among the attractive business places of the city. On Jan. 1, 1916, Mr. Hasbrouch was united in marriage with Miss Gladys Sanor, of Lisbon, the daughter of H. V. and Jessie Sanor. They have three children : Billy, born Oct. 7, 1917 ; Jessie Mae, born Aug. 11, 1920 ; and Donald, born May 27, 1922. Mr. Hasbrouch is a Republican, a member of the Elks Lodge, Kiwanis Club, and Business Men's Club of Leetonia. He is enterprising and progressive and is making a success of his business. 808 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY Lafayette M. Kyes. Among the most prominent attorneys and influential citizens of Columbiana County is Lafayette M. Kyes, of East Palestine. He was born at Unity, Ohio, May 29, 1879, and is the son of Lafayette M. and Elizabeth Ann (Martin) Kyes. Lafayette M. Kyes, deceased, was a native of Michigan. He was a farmer and during the Civil War served as a captain of the 29th Indiana Volunteers. He was drowned at Yankton, S. D., in 1879. His widow, who was born in East Palestine, lives at Toledo, Ohio. To Mr. and Mrs. Kyes were born two children : Lafayette M., the subject of this sketch ; and Ida M. Edge, lives at Toledo, Ohio. Lafayette M. Kyes spent his boyhood at Unity, Ohio, and attended the public schools of East Palestine and East Palestine Business College. He was graduated from Mt. Hope College, Ohio Wesleyan University, and Ohio Northern University, from which he received his L. L. D. degree in 1902. On June 17th of that year he was admitted to the bar ; Feb. 28, 1906, was admitted to practice in the United States Circuit Court ; and on Oct. 10, 1911, was admitted to practice in the United States Supreme Court. Mr. Kyes is engaged in the general practice of law and specializes in business and corporation law. He is identified with the Columbiana, Ohio State and American Bar associations. For more than 20 years Mr. Kyes has been active in industrial and civic development in East Palestine and Columbiana County. He conducted the campaigns securing free mail and free express delivery for the City of East Palestine and for more than 20 years has headed the good roads movement of eastern Columbiana County. He is counsel for: The National Tire & Rubber Company, The McGraw Tire & Rubber Company, The Adamson Manufacturing Company, The Banner Machine Company, The Union Commercial & Savings Bank, The East Palestine Building & Loan Association, and numerous other corporations. He is also secretary of The National Tire & Rubber Company and a number of other local corporations. During the World War he was a member of the legal advisory board of Columbiana County. On June 7, 1905, Mr. Kyes was united in marriage with Miss Myra E. Rogers, of Rogers, Ohio, the daughter of Theophilus G. and Ida M. (Hammond) Rogers, natives of Maryland and both now deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. Kyes a son, Roger Martin Kyes, was born. He is a student at Oberlin College. HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 809 Mr. Kyes is a Republican and served as mayor of East Palestine from 1908 until 1912, and as city solicitor from January, 1912, until January, 1924. He is also a member of the Columbiana County Republican Executive Committee. Mr. Kyes is a member of the Methodist Church, a 32nd degree Mason, and is affiliated with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias, Sons of Veterans, Ohio Society of New York, and East Palestine Country Club. He belongs also to the Ohio State Horticultural Society and the American Pomological Society, and is prominently identified with orchard development in Columbiana County. Mr. Kyes was for ten years secretary of the East Palestine Board of Trade in the most active industrial development period of the city's history and is now an active member of the board. John M. Anlgemyer, a well known business man of Leetonia, is a member of one of the county's oldest families. He was born at Leetonia, Jan. 7, 1885, and is a son of Marcus and Lorena (Thompson) Anglemyer. Marcus Anglemyer was the son of John Anglemyer, whose father, Jacob Anglemyer, settled in Leetonia at an early day. He was prominent in the early history of the community and well liked. The original Anglemyer family were Quakers. Marcus Anglemyer died in 1907, and Mrs. Anglemyer subsequently married Joseph M. Hunt. John M. Anglemyer received his education in the public schools and when a young man entered the Crescent Machine Company's shop as an apprentice. After two years at the latter place he entered the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad where he remained for two years. He then was connected with the New York Central Railroad for five years, and with the Susquehanna Silk Mills at Jersey Shore, Pa., for four years. He was later interested in the automobile business at Jersey Shore and Detroit, Mich., after which he spent almost ten years in the employe of the Hanna Furnace Company at Leetonia. He has since been conducting his present garage business in Leetonia, which is among the finest and most up-to-date repair shops in the county. He is also a dealer in automobile accessories, including tires and tubes. On Jan. 7, 1909, Mr. Anglemyer was united in marriage with Miss Jessie E. Sweely, the daughter of Elmer and Minnie Sweely, of Jersey 810 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY Shore, Pa. They have two sons: John Joseph, born Nov. 9, 1918 ; and Robert Sweely, born Aug. 13, 1920. Mr. Anglemyer holds membership in St. Paul's English Lutheran Church and the Masonic Lodge. He has served for two years as a member of the city council and is actively interested in the affairs of the community. E. Walter Berg, a well known garage owner at Washingtonville, is a substantial citizen of Columbiana County. He was born at Alliance, Ohio, Jan. 8, 1893, and is the son of Conrad and Cora (Spellman) Berg. A sketch of Conrad Berg appears elsewhere in this history. After completing his schooling, E. Walter Berg was employed by the Sheet & Tube Company, Youngstown, Ohio, and spent the following year in Detroit, Mich. After suffering a serious injury in a railroad accident he became interested in the automobile business at Leetonia. Fire destroyed the garage and he then built in Washingtonville. He has the agency there for the Chevrolet automobile and has a well equipped and up-to-date garage. He also deals in accessories and has an oil filling station. Mr. Berg has an annual sale of 150 cars. He opened a Chevrolet sales room in Salem, Dec. 5, 1925, as distributor. On Dec. 23, 1917, Mr. Berg was united in marriage with Miss Vera Keene, the daughter of William and Amanda Keene, of Franklin Square, Columbiana County. They have three sons: Floyd, born in 1918 ; Robert, born in 1920 ; and Kenneth, born in 1922. Mr. Berg is a Democrat, a member of the Lutheran Church, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Elks Lodge, and Kiwanis Club. He has served as township clerk of Salem Township and as a member of the Central Committee. Roger A. Cavanaugh, one of Leetonia's progressive and successful merchants, is a native of Pennsylvania. He was born at Syracuse, Nov. 18, 1870, and is the son of Daniel E. and Agnes E. (Cavanaugh) Cavanaugh. Both Mr. and Mrs. Cavanaugh, who settled in Columbiana County in 1872, are deceased. He died in 1917 and his wife died in 1907. R. A. Cavanaugh attended the public schools of East Palestine, Ohio, and has lived in Columbiana County since 1872. With his brother, T. J., HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 811 he established the present dry goods and clothing business which they conduct at Leetonia in June, 1910. They deal in high grade merchandise exclusively and are highly esteemed business men of the community. On June 23, 1910, Mr. Cavanaugh was united in marriage with Miss Mary A. Cavanaugh, the daughter of Patrick and Elizabeth Cavanaugh, of Leetonia. Mrs. Cavanaugh, deceased, was a sister to Reverend Cavanaugh, president emeritus of Notre Dame University, South Bend, Ind. She is buried at Leetonia. Mr. Cavanaugh is a Democrat and a member of the Catholic Church. Thomas J. Cavanaugh, a member of the firm of Cavanaugh Brothers, merchants of Leetonia, is well and favorably known throughout Columbiana County. He was born at Syracuse, Pa., Aug. 23, 1872, and is the son of Daniel E. and Agnes E. (Cavanaugh) Cavanaugh. On Oct. 11, 1913, Mr. Cavanaugh was married to Miss Agnes Phelan, the daughter of John Phelan, of Scottdale, Pa. They have three children : Mary Catherine, Marjorie, and Daniel Cavanaugh. Mr. Cavanaugh is a member of the Catholic Church and is a Democrat. Miss Carrie A. Scully, manager of the Leetonia Telephone Company, is one of the well known business women of Columbiana County. She was born in this city and is the daughter of John and Catherine (Finn) Scully. John Scully, deceased, was a native of Ireland. When a young boy he migrated to this country and settled in Columbiana County. For many years he was identified with the McKeefrey Iron Company. He died May 9, 1918. Miss Carrie A. Scully attended the public schools of Leetonia and Detroit, Mich., from which she was graduated. She spent nine years in the telephone company's employ at Detroit, Mich., and in 1918 assumed her present position as manager of the local branch of the Ohio Bell Telephone Company. In 1922 the Ohio Bell Telephone Company and Chesapeake & Ohio Telephone Company were consolidated as the Ohio Bell 812 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY Telephone Company. The local company has 236 subscribers and six operators. Miss Scully holds membership in St. Patrick's Catholic Church and has a wide acquaintance in Leetonia and the surrounding community. William W. Long is among the highly esteemed citizens of Leetonia, where he has been a resident for many years. He is a native of Columbiana County, born at Salem, July 4, 1869, the son of Joseph F. and Isabelle (MacDonald) Long. Joseph F. Long, deceased, spent his entire life in Salem and engaged in business there. He died Jan. 5, 1919, and his wife died June 10, 1924. After completing his schooling at Leetonia, W. W. Long was employed in the store of John Leavitt for five years. He then became connected with the Erie Railroad and since 1896 has been employed continuously by the Erie Railroad in the local offices. He has various business interests and is a director of the Savings & Loan Company and the Spatholt Hardware Company. On Sept. 26, 1904, Mr. Long was married to Martha (McKelvey) Chase, the daughter of Thomas and Anna McKelvey. By a former marriage, Mrs. Long has a son, Fred E. Chase, who lives at New Brighton, Pa. Mr. Long is a Democrat and served as mayor of Leetonia from 1917 until 1921. He has been township clerk for 27 years and is also a member of the school board. He is a charter member of the Kiwanis Club and is affiliated with the Knights of Pythias. Mr. Long has always taken an active interest in the affairs of the community and has a wide acquaintance in Columbiana County. Harry C. Hawkins, of East Rochester, is a well known, substantial and highly respected business man of Columbiana County. He was born at Baird, Ohio, Nov. 15, 1884, and is the son of James and Clementine (Bates) Hawkins. James Hawkins, deceased, was a well known business man of East Rochester, where he spent the greater part of his life. He was a harness maker and shoe dealer. HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 813 Harry C. Hawkins attended the schools of East Rochester and since 1913 has been interested in the dairy business. He has served as manager of the Andulusia Dairy Company since 1920. He is also engaged in the garage business in partnership with A. C. Robbins. They do general repair work and carry a complete line of automobile accessories and supplies. This partnership business was established in 1925. On April 14, 1916, Mr. Hawkins was united in marriage with Miss Helen Robbins, the daughter of A. C. and Bertha A. (Spare) Robbins, a sketch of whom appears in this history. They have two sons, Charles and James. Mr. Hawkins is a member of the Christian Church of East Rochester and belongs to the Masonic Lodge. Homer W. Hammond, one of Columbiana County's capable and prominent attorneys, engaged in the practice of his profession at Columbiana, is a native of this county. He was born in Madison Township, June 6, 1886, and is the son of George and Anna (Knepper) Hammond. George Hammond, deceased, was a well known farmer of Madison Township for many years. He died April 8, 1919, and his widow resides at Wellsville. Mr. and Mrs. Hammond had nine children: Maud, Harry, Georgia, Clifford, Homer W., Lillian, Earl, Olive, and Walter. Homer W. Hammond was educated in the schools of Madison Township and Lisbon and studied law at Ohio Northern University, from which he received his degree. Subsequently he was admitted to the bar of Columbiana County and since 1910 has engaged in the practice of law in Columbiana. On Dec. 24, 1913, Mr. Hammond was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Shingler, the daughter of John and Malinda (Schauweker) Shingler, both deceased. They have three daughters: Mary, born June 10, 1916 ; Anna, born June 4, 1920 ; and Ruth, born May 30, 1922. Mr. Hammond is a Republican and has served as city solicitor for two terms. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias, Elks, Delta Theta Phi, and Rotary Club. He is well known in Columbiana County and has many friends. 814 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY Paul A. Johnson is a reliable and well known young business man of Leetonia, where he is proprietor of Johnson's Confectionary store. He was born at Leetonia, May 29, 1889, and is a son of Samuel A. and Frances (Crook) Johnson. Samuel A. Johnson was an employee of the rolling mills in Leetonia for many years and later was associated in business with his son. He died in October, 1923 and his wife died May 29, 1911. They are buried in Oakdale Cemetery, Leetonia. Mr. Johnson established his present business in 1908 and it has been in the same location for the past eleven years, at 244 Main Street. It is one of the finest stores of its kind in Columbiana County and has a large patronage. On Oct. 2, 1908, Mr. Johnson was married to Miss Sarah Steel of Leetonia, a daughter of Amos and Mary (Swinehart) Steel. Mr. and Mrs. Steel are both deceased and are buried at Lansing, Mich. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson have one child, Mary Frances, born June 24, 1912. Mr. Johnson is a Republican, a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, is a member of the Kiwanis Club and the Leetonia Business Men's Club. He is identified with the Masonic Lodge No. 401, Chapter Council of Salem, and the Knights of Pythias of Leetonia. William A. Rankin, owner of the Auto Laundry Company, Leetonia, is a well known young business man of that place. He was born at Leetonia, Nov. 6, 1893, and is a son of Alex and Margaret (Almond) Rankin. Alex Rankin was a miller and for many years operated the Leetonia Mills. He and his wife now live retired at Leetonia. W. A. Rankin received his education in the public schools. He studied telegraphy and was an operator for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company for two years. He then joined the navy and was on the U. S. S. Pennsylvania for 27 months, during which time he made quite a number of round trips to France. Mr. Rankin held the rank of petty officer. He returned to Leetonia and was in the employ of the Rankin Brothers Milling Company, until he opened his present business in 1924. Mr. Rankin has a well equipped garage and carries a complete line of HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 815 automobile accessories as well as gas and oil, and specializes on car washing. His garage is located on Columbia Street in the Morgan Building. Mr. Rankin is a Republican; a member of the Presbyterian Church ; belongs to the Masonic Blue Lodge of Leetonia, 401 Chapter of Salem, and Kiwanis Club. He is unmarried and lives at 80 Walnut Street. C. A. Johnson is among the enterprising and progressive young business men of Columbiana. He was born at Braddock, Pa., March 28, 1899, and is the son of Frank and Mary Johnson. After completing his early schooling at Columbiana, C. A. Johnson attended Mt. Union College. While enrolled there he served for five months as a member of the Student Army Training Corps. Mr. Johnson has been interested in his present business since 1920, it being then owned by W. L. Augustine, who established it in 1885. During 1920 Mr. Johnson purchased the business. He is a book dealer and handles a fine grade of stationery and novelties. Politically, Mr. Johnson is a Republican. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and the Masonic Lodge and Sigma Nu fraternity. He is a popular young man in the community and has many friends. Edwin H. Detwiler, a prominent business man and highly esteemed citizen of Columbiana, is a native of this city. He was born Oct. 28, 1879, and is the son of Jacob and Susan (Harrold) Detwiler. Jacob Detwiler, president of The Enterprise Company, Columbiana, is a representative business man of Columbiana County. He established his present business almost 50 years ago, and is a widely known manufacturer of engines, saw mills and special machinery. His wife is deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. Detwiler were born five sons: Edwin H., the subject of this sketch ; Elmer, Homer, Norman, and Wilbur. Edwin H. Detwiler attended the public and high schools of Columbiana, from which he was graduated in 1897. He then went to Philadelphia, where he engaged in the printing business for 18 years. He returned to Columbiana in 1917 and until 1924 was interested in his father's 816 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY business. He then organized the Acorn Printing Company. Mr. Detwiler does general job printing and specializes in commercial stationery. Mr. Detwiler was married Nov. 22, 1905, to Miss Sophia Weseman, of Philadelphia, the daughter of George and Fredericka Weseman. Mr. and Mrs. Detwiler have four children : Daniel, Philip, Franklin and Miriam. Politically, Mr. Detwiler is a Republican and he and his family hold membership in the Nazarene Church. The Detwiler family has always been representative of the best citizenship in the county. J. P. Neill, the capable superintendent of the Columbiana County Infirmary, which is located near Lisbon, is a native of Columbiana County. He was born in Center Township, May 31, 1859, and is the son of William and Harriet (Pennock) Neill. William Neill, deceased, spent his entire life on a farm. He was a native of Columbiana County and lived in Hanover and Center townships. His wife is also deceased. J. P. Neill was graduated from Lisbon High School in 1879 and in early life engaged in general farming in Elk Run Township, teaching school during the winter sessions. He later engaged in the retail dairy business near Lisbon, and continued in his teaching profession. Since Sept. 1, 1923, he has served as superintendent of the county infirmary. Mr. Neill was married first to Miss Effie Barnett, May 19, 1883. She died Aug. 8, 1890, leaving three children: William, deceased ; Charles K. ; and Jesse. On July 12, 1897, Mr. Neill was married to Mrs. Anna Thorpe, the widow of James Thorpe. By her former marriage Mrs. Neill had two daughters, Olive and Esther. To J. P. and Anna Thorpe Neill were born four children: Mary, Nora, Florence, deceased, and John P., Jr. Mr. Neill is a Republican and is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge. He is a well known citizen of the community and is held in the highest esteem by every one. The Columbiana County Infirmary, established in Center Township 31/2 miles west of Lisbon, Ohio. It contains 431 acres of well improved land and the buildings are of stone construction, built from stones which were used in the locks of the old canal. The main building is of three HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 817 story construction, 40 by 100 feet. This contains the sleeping quarters, dining rooms, kitchens, etc. The superintendent's home is located nearby. Mr. Neill raises pure bred stock on the farm and the place is well supplied with fresh vegetables, fruits, etc. At the present time there are 120 inmates of the home. Thomas Cadwallader is a prominent business man of Salem, where he is secretary and treasurer of the Salem Chattel Mortgage Company. He was born at Middleton, Ohio, March 18, 1856, and is the son of Isaac and Esther (Alman) Cadwallader. Isaac Cadwallader, deceased, was a native of New Castle, Pa., as was his wife. Most of his life was spent in farming and the latter few years were devoted to the raising of strawberries, Mr. Cadwallader being among the pioneer strawberry growers of that section. Both Mr. and Mrs. Cadwallader are deceased. They were the parents of five children, of whom Thomas, the subject of this sketch, was the oldest. Thomas Cadwallader was reared and educated at Middleton and Pittsburgh. He followed farming and coal mining for some years and was a pioneer in the manufacturing of leg bands (poultry markers). He disposed of this business and then became identified with The Salem Chattel Mortgage Company since its organization as secretary and treasurer. Politically, Mr. Cadwallader is a Republican. He stands high in the community and has many friends and acquaintances. John G. Augustine, a leading citizen of Salem, and a member of one of the early pioneer families of Columbiana County, was born in Unity Township, Feb. 4, 1851, the son of David and Sarah Augustine. David Augustine was born in Unity Township, the son of John Augustine, who came to this county from New Jersey during the early days and settled in Unity Township, where he engaged in general farming. His son, David, was one of the prominent men of his time and served as justice of the peace of Unity Township for 21 years. He was a surveyor and also conducted a general mercantile business. He served- as a member of the school board and was one of the founders of Mount (15) V2 818 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY Union College. He died in April, 1865, and is buried in Unity Cemetery. His wife, a native of Pennsylvania, died in 1906. To Mr. and Mrs. Augustine the following children were born: Mary, died in 1923 ; Maud L., died in infancy ; Josephine, lives at Columbiana ; John G., the subject of this sketch ; Lyman lives in Salem ; Mrs. Ida Beck, lives at Columbiana ; Walter L., lives retired at Columbiana ; and Elmer E., lives at Stockton, Cal. John G. Augustine received his education in the district schools and was 14 years old when his father died. He clerked in a general store for a short time and later learned the harness making trade, which he followed for ten years. He then became interested in the carriage manufacturing business with his brother. For the past 35 years Mr. Augustine has been connected with the Deming Manufacturing Company, the largest pump manufacturers in the world. On Dec. 2, 1880, Mr. Augustine was united in marriage with Miss Catherine Carpenter of Columbiana, the daughter of Robert H. and Rebecca Carpenter, both deceased. They have two daughters: Mrs. Robert M. Atchison, of Salem ; and Leila, at home. Mr. Augustine is a Republican and has served as mayor of Columbiana, justice of the peace, and as a member of the township board. At one time held membership in the Unitarian Church and has been affiliated with the Masonic Lodge for 50 years, holding 32nd degree. In September, 1925, at Pittsburgh, Pa., he was elected to receive the 33' and last degree, the highest degree in Masonry. He has been prominent in Masonic circles for many years and is the author of two widely known publications, "Free Masonry" and "Personal Masonic Masonry." Calvin L. Glass, who has been identified with the Deming Company of Salem for the past 33 years, is a member of a prominent pioneer family of Columbiana County. He was born on a farm twelve miles southwest of Salem, Aug. 28, 1874, the son of Frederick and Louisa (Lower) Glass. Frederick Glass was born in West Township, Columbiana County, where his father, Jacob Glass, had settled many years ago. Until his retirement several years ago, Frederick Glass was a leading farmer and stockman of this section. He resides in Salem. His wife is deceased. HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 819 To Mr. and Mrs. Glass were born the following children: Etta M., married James King, lives in Washington, D. C.; William L., has been connected with the Deming Company, Salem, for 30 years; C. L., the subject of this sketch ; Charles F., lives in Washington, D. C.; Alice, married Carl Hoff, lives in Indianapolis, Ind. Frank, died at the age of 37 years, was Ford agent at Salem for a number of years; and Lelah Maude, died at the age of 14 years. C. L. Glass was reared on his father's farm in West Township and attended the schools of West Township. In 1893 he entered the employ of the Deming Company, pump manufacturers, and has remained with that firm most of the time since. Mr. Glass' new home on Ellsworth Avenue is among the finest residences in the city and was built in 1904 by Joseph French. On Dec. 24, 1895, Mr. Glass was united in marriage with Miss Anna B. McCracken, of Salem, also a member of a pioneer family of Columbiana County, her parents, Herbert and Mary (Silver) McCracken, having settled here in 1850. Two sons were born to Mr. and Mrs. Glass: Lloyd Harold, who died of sickness while in service during the World War at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia ; and Roth M., a World War veteran, lives in Chicago. He was married first to Miss Ethel M. Switzer, who died less than two months after their marriage. In March, 1923, he married Miss Mary Ball, of Lisbon, Ohio. C. L. Glass is a Republican and an excellent citizen of Columbiana County. Homer H. Lehman is among the well liked and successful business men of Columbiana, where he is engaged in the hardware business. He was born on a farm near Columbiana, Aug. 29, 1880, and is the son of David and Salinda (Blosser) Lehman. David Lehman, who lives retired, is a substantial and highly esteemed citizen of Mahoning County, where he has spent his entire life. During his active career he was successfully engaged in farming. Mr. and Mrs. Lehman have six children: Homer H., the subject of this sketch ; Alma, Mary, Clarence, Effie, and Elmer. After completing his schooling, Homer H. Lehman entered the employ of Mr. A. Greenmayer, pioneer hardware dealer of Columbiana. 820 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY After several years Mr. Lehman was made a partner in the business and from 1908 until 1922 the firm was known as Lehman & Schaffer. Since 1922 Mr. Lehman has conducted the business alone, which is among the well established businesses of its kind in Columbiana County. Mr. Lehman handles general hardware and oil well supplies and also deals in stoves, household utensils, electrical supplies, radios, radio supplies, paints, glass, auto accessories, steel pipe, pipe fittings, etc. On April 23, 1908, Mr. Lehman was united in marriage with Miss Bertha Beye, the daughter of August and Lydia Beye, of Fredonia, Pa. They have three children: Richard, born March 2, 1911; Eleanor, born Oct. 16, 1913 ; and Maurice, born Dec. 20, 1917. Mr. Lehman and his family hold membership in the Lutheran Church and he belongs to the Rotary Club. John A. Floding is a prominent citizen and successful business man of Leetonia. He was born on the farm where he resides March 16, 1868, and is the son of William and Barbara (Kipp) Floding. William Floding, deceased, was born in Saxony, Germany, and in 1855 came to the United States with his parents. They settled near Salem, Ohio, and in 1860 William Floding purchased the present farm in Salem Township. He died in April, 1907, and is buried in Oakdale Cemetery, Leetonia. Mr. Floding was one of the organizers of the Farmers & Merchants Banking Company, of which he served as vice president and director. He was a Democrat and a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. His wife, a native of Westmoreland County, Pa., was born in 1841, and resides in Leetonia. To Mr. and Mrs. Floding the following children were born : Magdelina, died at the age of 14 years ; John A., the subject of this sketch ; Mary, married E. E. Sitler, lives at Leetonia ; Clara, deceased ; Mrs. Ida Redfoot, lives in Leetonia ; and Frederick W., in the post office at Leetonia. John A. Floding attended the public schools of Leetonia and in 1895 formed a partnership with E. E. Sitler. They are wholesale and retail meat dealers and have a well established business in Leetonia. Mr. Floding is also extensively engaged in general farming and specializes in the raising of fruit. HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 821 On April 16, 1895, Mr. Floding was united in marriage with Miss Anna Wolfgang of Leetonia, the daughter of Noah and Ellen (Duck) Wolfgang. Mr. Wolfgang resides at Leetonia. His wife is deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. Floding three children were born: Carrie, married Clarence Heck, lives at North Lima, Ohio, and they have two daughters, Helen and Mary ; Helen, married Arthur Spatholt, lives at Leetonia ; and William K., who died at the age of ten years. Politically Mr. Floding is a Democrat. He is a member of the Lutheran Church and Masonic Lodge. He stands high in the community and has many friends and acquaintances. Dr. Paul H. Beaver, Leetonia, is among the enterprising and successful young physicians and surgeons of Columbiana County and is a veteran of the World War. He was born at Tiffin, Ohio, March 28, 1897, and is the son of Rev. George W. and Anna (Burrows) Beaver. A complete sketch of Reverend Beaver, pastor of St. Jacob's Reformed Church, Leetonia, appears elsewhere in this history. Dr. Paul H. Beaver attended the public and high schools of Lisbon from which he was graduated in 1915. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Heidelburg University, Tiffin, in 1918, and in 1922 was graduated from the School of Medicine, Western Reserve University, Cleveland. He has since practiced his profession in Leetonia. On Sept. 1, 1922, Doctor Beaver was united in marriage with Miss Dorothy Stackhouse of Greensprings, Ohio, the daughter of John M. and Alice Stackhouse. Mr. Stackhouse is deceased and his wife resides at Greensprings, Ohio. Mrs. Beaver was graduated from Ohio Normal University, Athens, and was a teacher in the public schools of Cleveland for five years before her marriage. Doctor Beaver is a member of St. Jacob's Reformed Church. He is serving as a member of the Columbiana County board of health. During the World War Doctor Beaver served as a member of the Medical Reserve Corps and was attached to the student army training corps at Western Reserve University. He is a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Kiwanis Club. Doctor Beaver has an extensive acquaintance in Columbiana County and is held in the highest esteem. 822 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY Dr. Wm. E. Ward. Ranking among the leading young dentists of Columbiana County is Dr. W. E. Ward of Leetonia. He was born at Atlanta, Ind., Oct. 29, 1897, the son of W. E. and Florence F. (Wilson) Ward. W. E. Ward, who lives retired at Wellsville, Ohio, was born at Warren, Ohio, in 1859. His wife was born at Niles, Ohio, in 1860. In 1909 they removed to Wellsville, where Mr. Ward served as superintendent of the American Sheet & Tin Plate Company until his retirement in 1922. Dr. W. E. Ward was reared and educated at Wellsville and in 1923 completed his course in dentistry at the University of Louisville, Ky. In January, 1925, he established his office at Leetonia. Doctor Ward was married July 12, 1924, to Miss Florence E. Martin of Wellsville, Ohio, the daughter of L. I. and Bessie (Wickline) Martin, residents of Wellsville. Doctor Ward is a Republican, a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Masonic Lodge and Kiwanis Club. John C. Hephner, who ranks among the prominent pioneer merchants of Leetonia, is a native of Columbiana County. He was born at Lisbon, Dec. 15, 1861, and is a son of Henry and Lucretia (Neigh) Hephner. Henry Hephner, deceased, was a veteran of the Civil War. He was born at Lisbon in 1837, the son of John Hephner, who was born at Hephner Hollow, near Lisbon. Henry Hephner was a tailor by trade and for 25 years engaged in business at Lisbon. He removed to Leetonia in 1883, where he died in 1912. His wife, a native of Fairfield Township, Columbiana County, died in 1909. She was the daughter of Lawrence and Nancy Neigh, pioneers of Columbiana County. To Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hephner were born six children as follows : Mary L., the widow of U. S. Nold, lives at Leetonia ; J. C., the subject of this sketch ; Harry L., died in 1917 ; Albert F., lives in Leetonia ; William, died in 1918 ; and Anna F., lives at Leetonia. J. C. Hephner was educated in the schools of Lisbon and Leetonia and was 20 years of age when he established his present business, 44 years ago. Mr. Hephner carries on a general mercantile business and has a well established trade. HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 823 In 1907 Mr. Hephner was married to Miss Anna Shea, the daughter of Flerence and Margaret (Welch) Shea. They have no children. Mr. Hephner is a Republican and has a wide acquaintance in the community where he has spent his entire life. Henry Staley is a progressive and enterprising business man of Columbiana, where he has engaged in the shoe business for more than 40 years. He was born at Columbiana, Oct. 3, 1868, and is the son of Frederick and Elizabeth (Kuegle) Staley. Frederick Staley was born in Germany, the son of Jacob Staley, a pioneer settler of Unity Township, Columbiana County. Frederick Staley was 17 years of age when his family emigrated to the United States. They spent several years in Pittsburgh before settling in this county. Mr. Staley was a cabinet maker by trade. He had two sisters: Caroline, deceased ; and Catherine, the widow of Andrew Harter, lives at Columbiana. To Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Staley, deceased, the following children were born: Henry, the subject of this sketch ; Elizabeth and Lorena, who live at Columbiana ; Frederick, lives at Akron, Ohio ; Ella, married Park D. Holloway, lives at Akron, Ohio; and Matilda, married J. E. Glenn, lives at North Lima, Ohio. Henry Staley has always lived in Columbiana. After completing his schooling he clerked in the shoe store of A. M. Frederick & Son for almost 11 years, when the business was sold to Jeffreys Brothers. This partnership continued until 1913 when Mr. Staley purchased an interest of one of the Jeffreys brothers. In January, 1919, Mr. Staley formed a partnership with Irvin S. Smith. The business is known as Jeffreys-Staley Company. It is the oldest established business of its kind in the county and has a large patronage. In 1905 Mr. Staley was married to Miss Cora Roninger, of Columbiana, the daughter of George and Leah Roninger. Mr. Roninger, a Civil War veteran who is now 94 years of age, resides at Columbiana. His wife is deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Staley have no children. Mr. Staley is a Democrat and has been a member of the school board for 18 years, and has also served as a member of the Columbiana County board of education for six years. He holds membership in the Lutheran 824 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY Church, of which he has been treasurer for 26 years, as well as Sunday School superintendent. He is a member of the Rotary Club and is held in high regard throughout Columbiana County. Dr. C. McCandless, well known veterinary surgeon of Lisbon, is a veteran of the World War. He was born in Butler County, Pa., Nov. 11, 1892, and is the son of J. A. and Sarah (Leyda) McCandless. J. A. McCandless was born at Prospect, Pa., in 1855. He has engaged in the building business at Ellwood City, Pa., for a number of years, where he resides. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Masonic and Elks lodges. His wife, also a native of Pennsylvania, was born in 1858. Mr. and Mrs. McCandless have six children, as follows : Byron J., lives at Ellwood City, Pa., where he is an architect ; C., the subject of this sketch ; Miles, lives at Ellwood City, Pa., and is in business with his father ; Alice, married Joseph Vosler, lives at Slippery Rock, Pa. ; Carlton and Joseph, who are engaged in the building business with their father. Dr. C. McCandless was eight years of age when his family removed to Ellwood City, Pa., where he attended the public school. He was later graduated from the University of Chicago and the Chicago Veterinary College. He has practiced his profession at Lisbon since 1915 and is widely known. During the World War Doctor McCandless enlisted for service in June, 1918, and served. overseas until October, 1919. Until his enlistment he was part owner of the Central Drug Store, Lisbon. Upon his return he purchased the entire business, which he successfully conducted until 1924, when he sold a half interest to T. C. Williams. Doctor McCandless has other extensive land holdings in Lisbon, among them being a fine residence on the Lisbon-Salem Road. On Oct. 11, 1916, Doctor McCandless was married at Lisbon to Miss Esther Ward, the daughter of L. S. and Anna Ward, residents of Lisbon. Doctor and Mrs. McCandless have a daughter, Dorothy Jane, born in 1921. Dr. McCandless is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Ohio State Veterinary Association, The United States Live Stock Sanitary Association, and is Columbiana County veterinarian. In politics Doctor McCandless is identified with the Republican party. He HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 825 is a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Elks Lodge, and is a 32nd degree Mason and member of the Shrine. He is capable in his work and ranks among the leaders of his profession. Elmore E. Sitler, who is successfully engaged in the meat business at Leetonia, is a member of a family that has long been identified with the history of Columbiana County. He was born in Salem Township, July 27, 1864, and is the son of Samuel and Sarah (Halverstadt) Sitler. Samuel Sitler was born on a farm in Salem Township in 1827, the son of Solomon Sitler, who came to Columbiana County from Berks County, Pa., in 1804, being one of the first settlers of Salem. Samuel Sitler engaged in farming during his life and met with success. He died in September, 1920, and his wife, also a native of Salem Township, died in 1923. They were the parents of the following children : Mrs. Elmira Senning, lives in New Jersey ; Mrs. Rebecca Switzer, lives at Taylorsville, Ill. ; Mrs. Clara M. Milligan, deceased ; Arvilla N., lives at Akron, Ohio ; and E. E., the subject of this sketch. E. E. Sitler received his education in the district schools of Salem Township and in early life engaged in farming. He has conducted his present business for a number of years in partnership with John A. Floding, and they are representative business men of this section. Mr. Sitler has a son, Samuel Russell, born July 23, 1900. He is associated in business with his father. Mr. Sitler is a Republican and holds membership in St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He is well and favorably known throughout the community in which he has spent his entire life. David Rankin, president of the Peoples Savings & Loan Company, Leetonia, has been identified with the business development of Columbiana County for a number of years. He was born in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Sept. 16, 1845, and is a son of John and Ann (Gillis) Rankin. John Rankin, deceased, was a native of Scotland, as was his wife. They were married in Canada in 1843 and settled in Pennsylvania many years ago, where Mr. Rankin was interested in mining. He died in 1855 826 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY and his wife died in 1888. They had two sons: Alexander, lives retired in Leetonia; and David, the subject of this sketch. David Rankin spent his boyhood in Pennsylvania and later lived in Canada. He settled in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1871 and followed the machinist's trade there until 1882, when he removed to Leetonia and engaged in the milling business. When Mr. Rankin came to Leetonia he formed the partnership of Randall-Rankin & Company. Mr. Randall retired in 1896 and the firm became Rankin Brothers, which continued until 1922, when David Rankin retired. He has been identified with the Peoples Savings & Loan Company as president for a number of years. On Dec. 24, 1874, Mr. Rankin was married at Boston, Mass., to Miss Flora Campbell, the daughter of Neil Campbell, a native of Nova Scotia. Mr. and Mrs. Rankin have a son, John A., a civil engineer, lives at Leetonia. He married Miss Lydia Jane Humbel, and they have three children: Donald D., born in 1910; Flora, born in 1912 ; and James, born in 1915. John A. Rankin enlisted in a Canadian regiment as first lieutenant and served during the entire war in France and Belgium. He was honorably discharged at Toronto, Canada, at the close of the war, having attained the rank of captain. Mr. Rankin attends the Presbyterian Church and the Masonic Lodge. He is a Republican and has always taken an active interest in the affairs of his community. John McKeefrey, who lives retired at Leetonia, is a well known and highly esteemed pioneer citizen of Columbiana County. He was born in Ireland, March 19, 1837, the son of Patrick and Margaret (McClamons) McKeefrey. Patrick McKeefrey spent his entire life in Ireland and is deceased. His wife died at Leetonia and is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery. They were the parents of the following children: Margaret, died in early life ; John, the subject of this sketch ; Ellen, deceased ; Patrick and James, both deceased; and Thomas, deceased. John McKeefrey was 13 years of age when he came to the United States. He lived in Pittsburgh, where he attended school and later engaged in the oil business. In 1890 he removed to Leetonia, where he HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 827 established the McKeefrey Iron Company in partnership with his son, W. D. McKeefrey. Mr. McKeefrey was identified with the Leetonia Bank as a director until his retirement. In 1860 Mr. McKeefrey was united in marriage with Miss Mary A. McFarland, a native of Ireland, now deceased. They had 13 children: W. D., a sketch of whom appears elsewhere in this history ; and Margaret, who lives at Leetonia. Mr. McKeefrey is a member of the Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He has served as school director and as a member of the board of health and city council. The McKeefrey family is representative of the best citizenship of the community. W. H. Stewart, a leading business man of Columbiana County, who is successfully engaged in the milling business at Homeworth, is a native of Pennsylvania. He was born in Washington County, Oct. 1, 1872, and is a son of W. H. and Sarah (Alexander) Stewart. W. H. Stewart, Sr., was born in Washington County, Pa., in 1839. He engaged in the milling business practically his entire life and died in 1905. His wife was born in 1838 and died in 1922. Mr. and Mrs. Stewart were the parents of the following children : Charles L., lives at Claysville, Pa. ; Blanche, lives at Claysville ; W. H., the subject of this sketch ; Letitia, deceased ; James, lives at Claysville ; Anna, married James Craig, deceased ; Andrew, lives at Claysville ; Susan and Robert, both deceased. W. H. Stewart was reared and educated at Claysville, Pa. He was associated in the milling business with his father at Claysville, Pa., for ten years, and in 1918 removed to Homeworth, where he was associated with the Canton Feed Company until 1920, when the present company was organized. The Homeworth Supply Company, dealers in feeds, flour, grain, and fertilizers, has developed into one of the thriving institutions of this section of Columbiana County. George F. Ramsayer, of Knox Township, is president ; and Mr. Stewart, manager. On July 3, 1895, Mr. Stewart was married at Claysville to Miss Catherine Gruber, a daughter of Jacob and Margaret Gruber. They had the following children : Harold A., an attorney, lives at Latrobe, Pa. ; Gertrude, bookkeeper for the Citizens Trust Company, Latrobe, Pa.; William 828 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY H. Jr., engaged in business with his father ; James G., married Evelyn Schopler, lives at Homeworth ; and Earl, at home. Mrs. Stewart died in 1911, and is buried at Claysville. He later married Miss Viola Gallagher, and they have two daughters, Virginia Mae, and Rosalind Constance, both at home. Mr. Stewart is a Republican and he and his family are members of the Presbyterian Church. Dr. Harry Bookwalter, who is widely known as a successful physician and surgeon of Columbiana County, is a native of Ohio. He was born at Dalton, Feb. 9, 1872, and is a son of Henry and Barbara (Rudy) Bookwalter. Henry Bookwalter was born at Lancaster, Pa., in 1832 and died in 1900. His wife was born in 1832 and died in 1911. They had seven children as follows : Enos, lives in Chicago ; Frank, lives at Austintown, Ohio; Ada, married Scott Fencetumaker, lives at Warren, Ohio ; H. H., the subject of this sketch ; John, an attorney, lives at Warren, Ohio ; Mary, the widow of Stanley Wilson, lives at Warren, Ohio; and George, lives at Warren. Dr. H. Bookwalter attended the public schools of Trumbull County, Ohio. He attended Mount Union College, Hiram College, and received his degree as Doctor of Medicine at Western Reserve University, Cleveland, in 1900. He came to Columbiana in that year, where he has since resided. He has a large practice and is recognized as one of the leading physicians and surgeons of this section. Doctor Bookwalter has extensive land holdings in the county and is vice president of the Union Banking Company, Columbiana. On June 10, 1900, Doctor Bookwalter was united in marriage with Miss Bessie Brownlee, of Mahoning County, the daughter of R. S. and Elizabeth Brownlee. Mr. Brownlee is deceased, and his wife resides in Denver, Colo. Doctor and Mrs. Bookwalter have two sons: Enos Byron, born May 14, 1902, a student in the law school of Ohio State University ; and Henry Lee, born in 1910. Doctor Bookwalter is a Republican, a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Masonic and Elk lodges, and the Salem Country Club and the Shrine. He is a member of the staff of the Salem City Hospital. HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 829 Errwood Slater, a well known business man of Leetonia and substantial citizen of Columbiana County, is a native of England. He was born at Lancashire, June 9, 1872, the son of Thomas and Ann (Andrew) Slater. Both Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Slater were natives of England, where they spent their entire lives. He died in 1897 and his wife died in 1913. They were the parents of 13 children, four of whom are now living, as follows : Lees and Andrew, who live in England ; Lilly, the widow of Jack Savage, lives at Lancaster, Pa. ; and Errwood, the subject of this sketch. Errwood Slater was reared and educated in England and engaged in the meat business with his father until 1893, at which time he came to the United States. He settled in Salem, Ohio, but after a short time moved to Leetonia, where he has successfully engaged in business since 1896. He conducts a meat market at 260 Main Street. On Oct. 8, 1896, Mr. Slater was united in marriage with Miss Janet Bell of Leetonia, a daughter of James and Janet Bell, both deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Slater had two children who died in infancy. Mr. Slater is a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Elks Lodge, and Kiwanis Club. He has always been an energetic man who stands well in the esteem of his neighbors and fellow citizens. Orrin H. McArtor, one of Columbiana County's representative young business men, is a veteran of the World War. He was born in Salem Township, Columbiana County, Feb. 20, 1897, and is a son of Lyman and Millie (Astry) McArtor. Lyman McArtor was born in Fairfield Township, Columbiana County, in 1858, the son of Milton McArtor, a pioneer settler of this section. He engaged in the contracting business in Salem for a number of years and among buildings erected by him are the Salem Opera House and Ohio Mutual Insurance Building. He was also supervising architect of the Fourth Street School, Salem. Mr. McArtor died in 1910 and is buried in Grandview Cemetery. He was a member of the Christian Church and an active church worker. His wife, a member of a prominent pioneer family of Columbiana County, resides in Kansas, with her daughter. Mr. and Mrs. McArtor were the parents of the following children : Bessie, mar- 830 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY ried H. M. Randels, lives at Anthony, Kan.; Dennis, lives at Canton, Ohio; Perry, lives at Salem ; Willis, lives at Salem ; Orrin H., the subject of this sketch ; and William, lives in Pittsburgh. Orrin H. McArtor received his education in the public schools and after his graduation from high school in 1917 he enlisted for service in the army. He served on the Mexican Border for 11 months and throughout the entire period of the World War was an ambulance driver. He participated in four major engagements of the war and was with the army of occupation for nine months. Mr. McArtor was discharged from service in September, 1919. He was then associated with the Victor Stove Company of Salem as a traveling representative for two years, and also spent two years with the Ohio Mutual Insurance Company. He has held his present position as manager of the People's Lumber Company, Columbiana, since 1925. On June 12, 1922, Mr. McArtor was married to Miss Edith E. West of Salem, the daughter of Elmer and Elizabeth West. They have a daughter, Betty Louise McArtor, born Jan. 5, 1924. Mr. McArtor is a member of the Christian Church of Salem and the American Legion. He is a Republican. Dr. W. S. Baker has been a successful and well known dentist of Columbiana since 1902. He was born in Elk Run Township, Columbiana County, April 17, 1872, and is a son of Emmett and Louisa (McMiller) Baker. Emmett Baker, deceased, was born in Elk Run Township, in 1842. He was a farmer and spent his entire life in this section. He died in 1915 and his wife is also deceased. She was the daughter of Dr. Joseph McMiller, who practiced dentistry in Fairfield Township, Columbiana County for 50 years. The Baker family has lived in Columbiana County since 1805, at which time Thomas Baker, grandfather of the subject of this sketch, settled here. To Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Baker the following children were born : George, Nettie, Emerson, Cecile, and Lemoin all deceased ; Dr. W. S., the subject of this sketch ; Ida ; Ira and John E. Dr. W. S. Baker received his education in the district school of Elk Run Township and has been located at Columbiana since 1902. HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 831 On April 5, 1893, Doctor Baker was married to Miss Cora Todd of Elk Run Township, the daughter of John A. and Eliza Todd, both deceased. They have two children: Mrs. Clara Buzard, lives at Lakewood, Ohio, has a son Robert ; and Roy T., married Florence Miller, lives at Columbiana, and they have a son, William. Politically, Doctor Baker is a Republican, and he has served as mayor of Columbiana for one term. He is a member of the Methodist Church and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He ranks among the substantial citizens of the county. Daniel J. Miller is among the well liked and successful young business men of Columbiana. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., Jan. 17, 1890, and is the son of J. J. and Elizabeth (Essenwein) Miller. J. J. Miller, a native of Bedford County, Pa., was born Dec. 4, 1865. He removed to Columbiana from Pittsburgh in 1903. His wife is also a native of Pennsylvania. Mr. and Mrs. Miller had five children: Daniel J., the subject of this sketch ; Ada, died at the age of 18 years; William B., mention of whom is made below; Anna, married L. E. Haggerty, lives at Columbiana ; and Paul, who died at the age of four years. Daniel J. Miller was 12 years old when his family settled in Columbiana County. He attended the public schools of Fairfield Township and began his business career in the employ of the Sitler bakery. After various occupations he organized his present grocery business in 1919 in partnership with his brother, William B. They are dealers in high grade groceries and meats and maintain a delivery service throughout Columbiana and vicinity. The business is located at 155 South Main Street. On June 25, 1914, Mr. Miller was married to Miss Catherine Myers of Columbiana, the daughter of Henry P. and Lydia (Koch) Myers. Mr. Myers resides at Columbiana. His wife is deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Miller have two daughters : LaRue, born on Jan. 2, 1916; and Janet, born May 2, 1920. Politically Mr. Miller is a Democrat and he and his wife are members of the Lutheran Church. William B. Miller was born at Columbiana, Aug. 9, 1894. He was married June 26, 1916, at Chester, W. Va., to Miss Stella McGahan of 832 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY Corapolis, Pa., the daughter of W. G. and Anna McGahan, residents of Chester, W. Va. They have a son, Jack, born Oct. 31, 1918. Both Daniel J. and William B. Miller stand high in the community and have many friends and acquaintances. George C. Walter, owner and manager of the "Smiling Stone Service Station," located on North Main Street, Columbiana, is among the well known young business men of Columbiana. He was born at Evans City, Butler County, Pa., Oct. 14, 1881, and is a son of Christian Gottlieb and Willa (Musser) Walter. Christian Gottlieb Walter, deceased, followed carriage making during his active business career. He died Nov. 29, 1922 and is buried at Rochester, Pa. His widow resides at Nutley, N. J. Mr. and Mrs. Walter were the parents of the following children: W. E., lives in McKees Rocks, Pa.; Emma T., married Raymond A. Vance, lives at Rochester, Pa. ; Mary A., married R. J. McGovern, lives at Nutley, N. J. ; George C., the subject of this sketch ; and John M., who lives in Nutley, N. J. After attending the public schools of Pittsburgh and Rochester, Pa., George C. Walter attended the Indiana Normal School, at Indiana, Pa. While there he was coach of athletics during 1898 and 1899. Mr. Walter began his business career in the employ of R. G. Gamble, wholesale hat manufacturers, Pittsburgh, with whom he remained for five years. He left this firm and entered the employ-of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, Pittsburgh, where he served for one year. He next engaged in business for himself as a certified public accountant, which business he followed for four years. He was with the Standard Life Insurance Company, Pittsburgh, for five years, and was auditor at the Sebring Tire & Rubber Company, Sebring, Ohio, for seven years. On Sept. 20, 1924, Mr. Walter established his present business at Columbiana. He carries a complete line of automobile accessories, as well as Vahey gas and oil. The station which is of stone construction was built in 1924 and is modern in every respect. On May 6, 1903, Mr. Walter was married to Miss Daisy Gertrude Mangus of Pittsburgh, Pa., a daughter of Joseph B. and Mary Emma HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 833 (Martin) Mangus, and they have two children: Gertrude Hope, born Nov. 12, 1905; and George Emerson, born Oct. 1, 1907, died in infancy. In politics Mr. Walter is independent. He is a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Sebring, and belongs to Sebring Lodge 626 F. & A. M. Mr. Walter and his family have a wide circle of friends and are favorably known. C. H. Shontz was born at Columbiana, Sept. 29, 1891, the son of Jerry and Myrtle (Buzar) Shontz. He was educated in the public schools and has been interested in the grocery business since completing his schooling, with the exception of a period of 18 months spent in service during the World War, also being a director of the Union Banking Company of Columbiana, Ohio. Mr. Shontz was married June 15, 1920, to Miss Ruth Keene, of West Salem, the daughter of Lorenzo and Catherine (Berry) Keene. They have a daughter, Anna Mary, born March 27, 1925. Mr. Shontz is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Masonic Lodge, and is a Republican. John G. Ryan, an enterprising business man of Columbiana and substantial citizen of Columbiana County, is a native of Ohio. He was born at Washingtonville, Columbiana County, July 27, 1873, and is the son of J. C. and Emma (Royer) Ryan. J. C. Ryan, deceased, was a prominent attorney of this county for more than 50 years. He was born at Washingtonville, Ohio, in 1831, and lived there during the greater part of his life. He died in 1918 and his wife, who was born at Deerfield, Mich., resides in Miami, Fla. Mr. and Mrs. Ryan were the parents of four children, as follows : John G., the subject of this sketch ; Otis, died at the age of 25 years, was a Spanish War veteran ; Pearl, married Frank Miller, lives in Miami, Fla. ; and Hazel, married Vade Coons, lives at Paulding, Ohio. J. G. Ryan was reared and educated at Hicksville and in 1900 removed to Salem, where he engaged in business for L. Tomlinson. He has lived in Columbiana since 1906 and conducted a farm in Fairfield Township (16)V2 834 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY until 1912. He has since been interested in his present business as proprietor of the local store of the United Cigar Stores. Mr. Ryan has a fine store and handles a good line of merchandise, including cigars, tobaccos, confectionery, etc. He also has a complete news stand. On March 14, 1895, Mr. Ryan was united in marriage with Miss Emma Strohaker, of Fairfield Township, Columbiana County, the daughter of David and Hannah Strohaker, both deceased. They have a son, J. G., Jr., born Jan. 18, 1902. He was married June 1, 1925, to Miss Dorothy Webber, of Salem, the daughter of Frank and Emma Webber, residents of Salem. Mr. Ryan is a Democrat and his family hold membership in the Grace Reform Church. He has held many township offices and has always taken an active interest in the affairs of his community. Wick Fry is a well known business man and leading citizen of Columbiana. He was born in Carroll County, Ohio, June 30, 1887, and is the son of Noah B. and Anna E. (Speaker) Fry. Noah B. Fry was born in Carroll County, Ohio, in 1849, and his wife. also a native of Ohio, was born in 1854. He died in 1923 and his wife in 1911. They had four children : David E., died in 1920 ; Wick, the subject of this sketch ; Garfield, lives at Canton, Ohio ; and Lamar, deceased. Mr. Fry engaged in general farming and specialized in the raising of sheep. He operated 200 acres of land. Wick Fry attended the public schools of Canton, Ohio, and studied embalming at Cleveland. In 1913 he engaged in business in Carroll County, Ohio, at Carrollton, and in 1920, removed to Columbiana, where he had purchased the undertaking establishment of John J. Marks, pioneer funeral director of Columbiana County. Mr. Fry has since conducted the business in a most successful manner. In July, 1910, Mr. Frey was united in marriage with Miss Jennie Rock, of Dellroy, Ohio, the daughter of Henry L. and Martha Rock. Mr. Rock died in 1919 and his wife resides with Mr. and Mrs. Fry. Mr. Fry is a Republican, a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Masonic Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias and Rotary Club. He is a capable business man and an excellent citizen. HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 835 Dr. Friend Trader, one of the well known younger physicians of Columbiana County, who is successfully engaged in the practice of his profession at Columbiana, is a veteran of the World War. He was born at New Martinsville, W. Va., Sept. 18, 1897, and is a son of Wilfred and Adeline (Briggs) Trader. Wilfred Trader, was born at Proctor, W. Va. He engaged in general farming and stock raising during his life and died at New Martinsville, W. Va., in 1921. His wife died in 1918. Friend, the subject of this sketch, was their only child. Doctor Friend Trader was reared and educated at Bellaire, Ohio, and after his graduation from Mount Union College he entered the University of Pittsburgh, where he received his degree as Doctor of Medicine in 1923. He engaged in the practice of his profession at Salem with Doctor Yaggi until Feb. 24, 1925, when he removed to Columbiana, as successor to Doctor J. A. Mellon's practice. On June 18, 1923, Doctor Trader was united in marriage with Miss Genevieve Ann Mannix, of Pittsburgh, a daughter of John and Margaret Mannix. Before her marriage Mrs. Trader was a nurse. She is a graduate of the McKeesport (Pa.) Hospital. During the World War Dr. Trader was commissioned captain in the Reserve Officers Training Corps and was stationed at Fort Sheridan, Ill. He is a Republican and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. As a physician, surgeon and citizen, Doctor Trader ranks high in the community. Dr. W. A. McCommon, who has practiced his profession at East Palestine for the past 26 years, is among the capable physicians and surgeons of Columbiana County. He was born at Plain Grove, Lawrence County, Pa., Jan. 12, 1869, the son of Robert and Rosanna (Magee) McCommon. The McCommon family is of Scotch descent and in 1795 settled in Lawrence County, Pa., where Robert McCommon was born. His father homesteaded a tract of 400 acres. Robert McCommon followed general farming and stock raising during his life and died in 1914. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and active in local politics. His wife died in 1916. She had two brothers, John and George Magee, who served during the Civil War. George was killed during the Battle of 836 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY Bull Run, and John lives retired in Lawrence County, Pa. Mr. and Mrs. McCommon were the parents of the following children: Jennie, married George Patterson. both deceased ; McWatty, lives retired on the home place in Lawrence County, Pa.; John, deceased ; Emma, deceased, was the wife of Henry Scholler ; Martha and Annette live in Lawrence County ; Blanche, married Floyd McClellan, lives at New Castle, Pa.; George, lives at Shadyside, Ohio ; and William, A., the subject of this sketch. Dr. Wm. A. McCommon received his early education in the district school and in 1897 received his degree as Doctor of Medicine at Ohid Medical University. He has been located in East Palestine since 1889, and has a well established practice. In 1901 Doctor McCommon was united in marriage with Gertrude C. Donaldson of New Galilee, Pa., the daughter of Edwin and Mary (Davis) Donaldson. Mr. Donaldson is deceased and his wife resides at East Palestine. They had three children: Charles, lives at New Castle, Pa. ; Byron, a conductor on the Pennsylvania railroad ; and Mrs. McCommon. Doctor and Mrs. McCommon have two children: Donald, lives in East Palestine ; and Mary, married Robert Wolz, lives at Ambridge, Pa. Doctor McCommon is identified with the Columbiana County, Ohio, and American Medical Societies, and the American Medical Association. He has served as a member of the school board and has always taken a keen interest in every movement to benefit East Palestine. He and his family are members of the United Presbyterian Church and he belongs to the Masonic Lodge. Jerry Shontz is among the successful and representative merchants of Columbiana, where he has engaged in the grocery business for 30 years. He was born in Butler County, Pa., Aug. 25, 1862, and is a son of Abraham and Christina (Heckard) Shontz. Abraham Shontz was born in Butler County, Pa., in 1832, and died in 1909. His wife, also a native of that county, was born in 1836, and died in 1904. They were the parents of the following children : Isaac, Julia, and Letitia, all deceased ; Samuel, lives in Detroit, Mich.; Jerry, the subject of this sketch ; Sadie, the wife of M. Hassinist, lives at Scottdale, Pa.; Aaron F., lives near Canfield, Ohio ; Mrs. Hattie Haller, lives in Pitts- HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 837 burgh, Pa.; Mrs. Katie Rockenstein, lives at Freedom, Pa. ; and William, lives at Canton, Ohio. Jerry Shontz attended the public schools of Harmony, Butler County, Pa., and was 17 years old when his family removed to Columbiana. He learned the carriage making trade which he followed about eight years, and in 1896 he established his present business. His son, C. H. Shontz, has been a partner in the business since 1916, which is known as Shontz & Son. They are leading grocers of this section of the county and deal in high grade groceries, meats, and sea foods. Mr. Shontz married Miss Myrtle Buzard, of Columbiana, Ohio, and they have six children as follows: W. B., lives in El Paso, Texas ; Ethel, at home ; C. H., a sketch of whom appears below ; Olive, married Dr. Harry L. Weaver, lives at Alliance, Ohio ; Bertha, at home ; and Irma, deceased. Mr. Shontz is a Republican and has served as a member of the school board and city council. He and his family hold membership in the Methodist Episcopal Church and he belongs to the Masonic Lodge and Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He and his family have a wide acquaintance throughout Columbiana County. Morgan B. Francis, an enterprising and successful business man of East Palestine, was born in Trumbull County, Ohio, Aug. 29, 1871, the son of Benjamin and Margaret (Morgan) Francis. Benjamin Francis, retired, was born near Cardiff, Wales. His family came to the United States about 1867 and settled at Youngstown, Ohio, where he was extensively engaged in coal mining for a number of years. In 1883 the Francis family removed to Wadsworth, Ohio, and in 1888 to Lisbon, where they have since resided. Margaret (Morgan) Francis died Nov. 11, 1923. Mr. and Mrs. Francis were the parents of five children : Thomas, a sketch of whom appears elsewhere in this history ; Edmund, lives at Niles, Ohio ; Charlotte, married Edward Edwards, lives at Niles, Ohio ; Mary, married Joseph Morgan, lives at Canton, Ohio ; and Morgan B., the subject of this sketch. Morgan B. Francis spent his boyhood at Youngstown, Wadsworth and Lisbon, and attended the public schools. For 18 years he was connected with the Card & Prosser Coal Company of Lisbon and since 1908 838 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY has operated a coal mine in partnership with his brother Thomas. They are among the leading coal operators of this section and their mines have a daily output of 200 tons. They are also owners of a clay mine at Darlington, Pa. In 1892 Mr. Francis was married to Miss Sarah Braley, the daughter of Thomas and Mary Braley, the former a native of England and the latter of Wales. Mr. and Mrs. Francis have a daughter, Mary, who lives at home. Mr. Francis attends the Methodist Episcopal Church and is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge. He is one of the substantial citizens of Columbiana County and is well known. C. F. Adamson doing business as Adamson Manufacturing Company, came to East Palestine in 1908 as architect in the construction of The McGraw Tire & Rubber Company plant. Upon its completion he acted as superintendent for a number of years. During this time he developed what is commonly known as the Adamson vulcanizer and later established a plant on Clark Street this city for the manufacture of this device and general foundry work and equipment, since which time he has added the manufacture of steel storage tanks and has become the recognized leader in the manufacture of the latter line. Mr. Adamson was educated as an engineer which largely accounts for his being recognized as one of the most efficient industrial operators in eastern Ohio. Mr. Adamson has the most beautiful country residence in Columbiana County and one of the finest industrial buildings in eastern Ohio and believes that a great essential to industrial success is high class, modern, efficient equipment. His plant employs approximately one hundred men and has become the largest railroad shipper in East Palestine. He plans to double the capacity of this plant within the next ninety days. Mr. Adamson's efficiency as a manufacturer has enabled him to continue his manufacturing operations successfully regardless of competition ; his plant never having had a shutdown from its original beginning of operations. Mr. Adamson takes an active interest in civic affairs and all matters pertaining to development of East Palestine and is very public spirited. HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 839 W. H. Gamble, a prominent druggist of East Liverpool, is a member of one of the old and well established families of Columbiana County. He was born in this city, July 19, 1879, and is a son of John and Mary (Manley) Gamble. John Gamble was born in Canada, the son of Robert Gamble, who came to this country from Belfast, Ireland, in 1830. He spent some time in Canada and died at Canal Dover, Ohio. His son, John, one of East Liverpool's leading business men, learned the brick layer's trade at the age of 13 years and when 17 years old became a building contractor in partnership with Harry Surles, at one time postmaster of East Liverpool. Later he conducted a brick yard with Will Surles on the present site of the china works at Minerva and Huston streets. Mr. Gamble later sold his interest and is at present a member of the firm of J. E. Gamble & Company, brick contractors. They have built more pottery kilns than any other concern in the United States, and Mr. Gamble has also had extensive business interests in Canada. He has also built some of the finest business buildings and residences in this city. Mary (Manley) Gamble was born in East Liverpool and is a daughter of Holland and Mary (Cartwright) Manley, who came to this country from England and settled in East Liverpool, where he worked at his trade as a potter. Later with his brother-in-law, William and Samuel Cartwright, Mr. Manley founded the Manley-Cartwright Pottery Company. Both Mr. and Mrs. Manley are now deceased. To 'Mr. and Mrs. John Gamble were born five children : W. H., the subject of this sketch ; Bessie, resides with her parents ; E. L., a playwright, is also engaged in the drug business with his brother ; Gladys, married Dr. Leon Lemmon, a physician of Cleveland, Ohio ; and Grace, married Ernest Howard, an engineer on the Pennsylvania Railroad, lives at Wellsville, Ohio. W. H. Gamble was graduated from the public schools of East Liverpool and from the School of Pharmacy, University of Pittsburgh, in 1901. He is a registered pharmacist in both Ohio and Pennsylvania. After leaving school he spent some time at Rochester and McKeesport, Pa., later coming to East Liverpool where he was associated with Charles Craig, druggist. In 1904 Mr. Gamble became a member of the drug firm of W. C. Lynch and Laben Wilson. He later became sole owner and the business is known as Gamble's Drug Store, and is located at 401 Market Street. This business was established in 1884 by A. H. Fleming, and 840 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY later sold to W. W. Robinson. It was formerly located on East Fourth Street. In 1905 Mr. Gamble was married to Miss Mary C. Aten, native of Wellsville, Ohio, and a daughter of Henry and Lydia (Dever) Aten, both deceased. They have three children : Marion, deceased; Helen, a student at East Liverpool High School; and Dorothy. Mr. Gamble is a Republican, a member of the First Presbyterian Church, and one of East Liverpool's representative citizens. Ralph W. Hawley, managing editor of the Salem News, is one of the prominent newspaper men of Columbiana County. He was born in Salem, July 10, 1888, and is the son of Warren A. and Minerva (Tomlinson) Hawley. Warren A. Hawley, a highly esteemed citizen of Salem, was born in Columbiana County, Ohio, and his wife was born in Jefferson County, Ohio. In early life he engaged in farming south of Salem, later was a machinist, and is now engaged in the grocery business. Mr. and Mrs. Hawley have three children: Grace M., married E. J. Peek, lives at Redondo Beach, Cal. ; Roy K., lives at Akron, Ohio ; and Ralph W., the subject of this sketch. Ralph W. Hawley received his education in the public schools of Salem and began his newspaper career as a reporter for the Salem News, later becoming its editor. After five years in the latter capacity, he engaged in newspaper work on the Pacific coast, and after his return to Ohio was connected with the Cleveland Plain Dealer. He served as managing editor of the Tribune, East Liverpool, for one year, after which he spent five years with the Youngstown Telegram as telegraph editor, city editor, and assistant managing editor. He returned to Salem in 1921 and purchased an interest in the News, of which he is managing editor. On July 22, 1918, Mr. Hawley was united in marriage with Miss Lora M. Hill, of East Liverpool, the daughter of Robert E. and Carrie (Brockman) Hill, residents of East Liverpool. Mr. Hawley holds membership in the Christian Church and his wife is a member of the Methodist Church. He is a Republican, a 32nd degree Mason, and member of the Shrine and belongs to the Elks Lodge, Salem HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 841 Chamber of Commerce, Salem Golf Club, National Editorial Association, and the American Legion. Mr. Hawley served during the World War in the Field Artillery and was one year in service. He was president of the Salem Rotary Club in 1925 and has been active in Rotary work throughout Ohio, being a charter member and having held the office of first secretary of the local organization. William C. Wallace, deceased, ranked among the leading pioneer business men of Columbiana County. He was born in Elk Run Township, Columbiana County, Dec. 28, 1842, the son of John and Tamer (Williams) Wallace. Ezekiel Wallace, grandfather of William C. Wallace, settled in Washington County, Pa., in 1806, and later removed to Columbiana County where he died in 1812. He purchased a farm in Elk Run Township, which was later owned and operated by his son, John Wallace, who had accompanied him to Ohio. William C. Wallace was left an orphan at the age of six years and was reared by an aunt in St. Clair Township, Columbiana County. He was one of a family of four children, Hamilton Gaston, who lived in California, is now deceased. William C. Wallace received his education in the district school and at the outbreak of the Civil War enlisted in the 101st regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. After the close of the war he went to Iowa, but in March, 1866, returned to Columbiana County, and settled in Unity Township. He became one of the most prosperous farmers in the county and owned 524 acres of well improved land. An unusual circumstance concerning this tract of land is the fact that it was willed to each succeeding owner and was deeded only by Thomas Jefferson, president, and James Madison, Secretary of State, to the original purchaser. Mr. Wallace was identified with many of the leading businesses and industries of East Palestine, being a member of the board of directors of the East Palestine Pottery Company, president of the East Palestine Lumber Company, president of the Stock Raiser's Mutual Live Stock Association, president of the East Palestine Creamery Company, president of the Springfield Mutual Insurance Company, and president of the First National Bank of East Palestine. He died April 18, 1915. 842 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY On Sept. 15, 1870, Mr. Wallace was married to Miss Lucinda Long, the daughter of Israel and Elizabeth Long. Mr. and Mrs. Wallace were the parents of the following children: Charles L., a sketch of whom appears in this history ; Paul and William O. Wallace. Mr. Wallace was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Masonic Lodge and the Grand Army of the Republic. He was well known in the community and a representative citizen. Thomas G. Francis, of East Palestine, is a representative business man of Columbiana County. He was born in Trumbull County, Ohio, July 21, 1870, a son of Benjamin and Margaret (Morgan) Francis. Benjamin Francis, who lives retired in East Palestine, was born near Cardiff, Wales in 1846. Thomas G. Francis attended the public schools of Girard, Ohio, and when a boy became interested in the mining business which his father conducted. He attended Canfield Normal School and later studied mining engineering. In 1900 Mr. Francis engaged in the mining business with his brother, Morgan B., and they now rank among the leading clay miners of this section. They operate mines at East Palestine and Darlington, Pa. Mr. Francis is a director of the Clay Products Company of New Brighton, Pa., and is a director of the Union Commercial Bank of East Palestine. He has served as a member of the city council for two terms and as chairman of the finance committee. In 1890 Mr. Francis was married to Miss Jennie Wood of Cleveland, a daughter of Joseph and Ann Wood. To them were born three children : Joseph Roy, who died March 5, 1915, at the age of 22 years ; Margaret Ann, married Charles Labor, lives at East Palestine and they have two children, Robert and Jean Alice ; and Benjamin, married Miss Carman HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 843 Strause and they have a son, Benjamin T. Francis. Mrs. Thomas G. Francis died Aug. 9, 1920, and is buried in East Palestine. Mr. Francis and his family are members of the Christian Church and he is affiliated with. the Masonic Lodge. Samuel B. McClure, of the McClure Builders Supply Company, East Palestine, is among the successful business men of Columbiana County. He was born on a farm near Clinton, Pa., in 1863, the son of John and Margaret (Battie) McClure. Both John and Margaret (Battie) McClure are deceased. They were natives of Pennsylvania and in 1869 removed to Columbiana County and settled on a farm four miles west of Columbiana. They are buried in New Waterford Cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. McClure had six children as follows : Elizabeth and Ella, both deceased ; Jennie ; Thomas, lives on the home place near Columbiana ; Samuel B., the subject of this sketch ; and Mattie, deceased. Samuel B. McClure spent his boyhood on his father's farm and attended the district school. In early life he followed the carpenter trade and later engaged in the lumber business at East Palestine for 30 years. His present business is among the largest of its kind in the county. Mr. McClure was united in marriage with Miss Siddie A. Boies, the daughter of James and Hannah Boies, pioneers of Columbiana County. Mrs. McClure died in November, 1917. To Mr. and Mrs. McClure a son was born, Ernest H., who is engaged in business with his father. He married Miss Florence Roberts of East Palestine. Mr. McClure is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He has an extensive acquaintance in the community and is favorably known. Ellis Markanton, well known proprietor of the Ohio Lunch Room, ranks among East Liverpool's progressive business men. He was born in Karditza, Greece, July 7, 1892, and is the son of George and Magdeline Markanton. George Markanton, who died in 1920, spent his entire life in Greece and was a commission merchant. His wife resides in the old homestead 844 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY there. They were the parents of four children: Jane, married Louis Liacos ; Ellis, the subject of this sketch ; Mary, married Chris Stam ; and Thomas. All of this family live in Greece, except Ellis Markanton. Ellis Markanton spent his boyhood at Karditza, Greece, and was educated in the public and high schools there. He came here after completing his schooling and settled in Wisconsin, where he remained for 22 months. He then returned to his native land and joined the Greek army, in which he served from 1913 until 1919, being discharged with the rank of first lieutenant. While in the service he participated in 35 battles and was a member of the cavalry, later the heavy artillery, military police and state detective service. Mr. Markanton returned to the United States in 1920 and located in East Liverpool, where he established a restaurant business. He has met with success in his business undertaking and conducts an up-to-date and popular lunch room, which is located on Washington Street. In 1923 Mr. Markanton was married to Miss Evangeline Ioannide, who was born in Ideen, Turkey. They have a daughter, Pearl. Mr. Markanton is a Republican and a member of the Greek Orthodox Church at Cambridge, Pa. Thomas J. Kerr, who lives retired in East Liverpool, is a veteran of the Civil War, and a prominent pioneer citizen of Columbiana County. He was born at Freedom, Beaver County, Pa., Dec. 28, 1845, and is the son of Nathaniel Preston and Isabel (Hall) Kerr. Both Nathaniel Preston Kerr and his wife were natives of Pennsylvania. He was a blacksmith by trade and spent most of his life at Freedom and Vanport, Pa. There were seven children born to Mr. and Mrs. Kerr as follows : Thaddeus, Isabel, Robert, Judson, all deceased ; Edith, lives in Washington, D. C. ; Alice, lives at Vanport, Pa. ; and Thomas J., the subject of this sketch. Thomas J. Kerr received his education in the schools of Beaver County and for a number of years engaged in the pottery business, specializing in stone ware. He served throughout the Civil War in Company F, 140th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and engaged in the following important battles and skirmishes : Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Bristol Sta- HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 845 tion, Mine Run, Wilderness, Spottsylvania, North Anna, Totopotomy, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Reams Station, Appomattox, and Hatcher's Run. In Mr. Kerr's company of 1,132 men, 198 were killed in action, 128 died of wounds, 534 were wounded, 30 died in southern prisons, and 74 died of disease. At the last encampment of this regiment in 1924 only 93 members were present. After the close of the war Mr. Kerr returned to East Liverpool but in 1876 went west to Yanktown, S. D., where he spent 13 years as a marine engineer on the Yellowstone and Missouri rivers. He then spent three years on the Ohio River, serving in this capacity, and in 1892 became connected with the Homer Laughlin China Company of East Liverpool as an engineer. He had complete charge of the installation of machinery in the company's East End plant, and remained in its employ for 30 years. Mr. Kerr was married first to Miss Elvira Russell, of Vanport, Pa. She died, leaving two children, Ralph and Maud. The latter is deceased. Mr. Kerr was later married to Miss Emma L. Burgett, who died in 1913. To this marriage four children were born: N. P., resides in East Liverpool ; Ernest, resides in Alliance, Ohio ; Elsie L., deceased, was the wife of D. H. Crawford of East Liverpool, and they had three children, Margaret, Ada, and Irma; and George, died in infancy. Mr. Kerr holds membership in the Presbyterian Church and belongs to the Grand Army of the Republic. He is a Republican and ranks among the substantial citizens of the community. H. A. Leith, proprietor of the Quality Feed Store, is a native of Wellsville, and a substantial business man of Columbiana County. He was born May 25, 1890, and is the son of James Albert and Rebecca Isabel (Calhoun) Leith. James Albert Leith, who lives retired at Wellsville, was born in Gallia County, Ohio, as was his wife. In 1880 he removed to Wellsville, where he was successfully engaged in the coal business until his retirement. His wife died Feb. 17, 1920, and is buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Wellsville. To Mr. and Mrs. Leith were born two children: Gusta, married Frank Burwick, lives at Hanover, Ohio ; and H. A., the subject of this sketch. 846 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY H. A. Leith grew up in Wellsville and attended the public schools. He became interested in the coal business at an early age and in May, 1911, established the Quality Feed Store, at Fourth Street on the Square. He is associated in business with his brother-in-law, James Heckathorn. The Quality Feed Store handles grain, straw, feed, etc., and have a well established trade. On June 3, 1914, Mr. Leith was united in marriage with Miss Loretta Heckathorn, a native of Pennsylvania, born in 1888, and the daughter of Richard and Rachel (Martin) Heckathorn, residents of Washington County, Pa. Mr. and Mrs. Heckathorn are the parents of the following children: Myrtle, married Hugh Ward, lives at Empire, Ohio ; James, a partner in the Quality Feed Store ; George, lives at Newton Falls, Ohio ; Mrs. Leith ; Ina, married Calvin White, lives at Washington, Pa.; Grace, married Jesse White, lives at Newton Falls, Ohio ; Clarence, lives at Newton Falls, Ohio ; Robert, lives in Pennsylvania ; and Elmer, deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. Leith have been born three children : Howard Albert, born Oct. 7, 1918 ; Robert, died in infancy ; and Harold, born in 1923. Mr. Leith is a stanch Republican, a member of the Christian Church, and is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge. He is an upright and industrious man and held in high regard throughout the community. Monroe Hague, a veteran of the World War, is among the highly esteemed young men of Wellsville. He was born at Wheeling, W. Va., July 19, 1887, and is the son of Sewell and Louise (Patterson) Hague. Sewell Hague was born at Salineville, Ohio, and when a young man settled in East Liverpool, where he became interested in the pottery business. He was one of the organizers of the Wellsville China Company with James Norris, Monroe Patterson, John Patterson, A. W. Weber and Arthur Dodd. Mr. and Mrs. Hague have four children : Myrtle, married Harry Jones, lives at Louisville, Ohio ; Nellie, lives at Mt. Dora, Fla. ; Monroe, the subject of this sketch ; and Bessie, married W. W. Ingram, an attorney, lives at Chester, W. Va. Monroe Hague attended the public schools of Wellsville and started life in the pottery business in this city. He is employed by the Wellsville China Company as a gilder. HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 847 During the World War Mr. Hague enlisted on April 29, 1918, and served in France with Company 324, Battery E. He participated in several major engagements, including the Argonne and Verdun, and was discharged June 4, 1919. Mr. Hague is a Republican and a member of the Elks and Masonic Lodge and Veterans of Foreign Wars. G. F. McCready, now living retired at Wellsville, is a member of an old, substantial family of Columbiana County. He was born in Madison Township, Columbiana County, Aug. 12, 1860, the son of Joseph and Catherine (Boyd) McCready. Joseph McCready was born in the old McCready homestead in Madison Township in 1819. He was a leading citizen of his time and held many township offices. He served as a member of the school board for 37 years. He married Nancy Campbell, who died in 1855: Five children were born to this union, as follows: James, deceased Dr. Joseph, a physician, lives at Perry, Ohio; Dr. Robert, a physician, lives at Pittsburgh; Margaret, deceased, was the wife of Thomas Cameron ; and Cynthia, married Robert Smith, both deceased. He later married Catherine Boyd and they had three children: Averilla, died in 1924, was the wife of H. M. Grafton ; Catherine Elizabeth, died in 1922, was the wife of George Paul ; and G. F., the subject of this sketch. Joseph McCready died in 1892 and his second wife departed this life in 1890. G. F. McCready was educated in the district schools of Madison Township and attended Lisbon Normal School. He was always interested in farming and stock raising and operated the old homestead of 270 acres until the time of his retirement several years ago. He was an extensive feeder and shipper of stock. Mr. McCready is a director of the Peoples National Bank of Wellsville. On Dec. 21, 1893, Mr. McCready was married to Miss Elizabeth Ella Kerr, who was born on the old Kerr homestead in Yellow Creek Township, Columbiana County, July 31, 1867, the daughter of Thomas Barr and Nancy (McBane) Kerr. Mr. Kerr, a Civil War veteran, died Feb. 2, 1900. His wife lives in Yellow Creek Township. They had six children, as follows: Mary Alice, married Samuel Kerr, both deceased ; Mrs. Mc- 848 - HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY Cready ; John McBane, a sketch of whom appears elsewhere in this history ; Catherine, married William Frazier, lives in Pittsburgh ; Jeanette and Christine, at home. To Mr. and Mrs. McCready have been born five children: (1) Dr. Joseph K., born April 15, 1895, a physician, engaged in the practice of his profession at Columbus, Ohio, is a World War veteran, having served in France with the medical department ; (2) Thomas Paul, born Aug. 24, 1896, a druggist, lives at Youngstown, Ohio, married Bessie Rath, and they have three children, Warren, Doris and Helen ; (3) Helen B., born April 18, 1898, died April 3, 1913 ; (4) Ralph C., born March 9, 1900, lives at home ; and (5) Robert George, born March 24, 1909. Mr. McCready is a Republican and he and his family are identified with the Presbyterian Church. He is held in high regard throughout the community and is an excellent citizen of Columbiana County. F. L. Summer, postmaster of Bayard, is well and favorably known in Columbiana County, where he has spent his entire life. He was born in West Township, Columbiana County, Sept. 18, 1858, and is the son of Daniel and Anna (DeHoff) Summer, both deceased. F. L. Summer attended the district schools of West Township and attended Mt. Union College. He engaged in teaching school for 10 years and for the past 20 years has been a member of the board of education and clerk of the board. He was a promoter of the Bayard Electric Company and served as its president for three years. Mr. Summer has been postmaster of Bayard since 1917: On Oct. 11, 1884, Mr. Summer was united in marriage with Miss Mary Catherine Myers. Mrs. Summer was born in Hanover Township, Columbiana County, Jan. 27, 1867, a daughter of James S. and Susanna (Ewing) Myers, natives of Ohio, and both now deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Summer have four children: Georgianna, married M. E. Smeltz, and they have two daughters, Alice and Ruby ; Chester, married Minnie Betz, and they have three children, Orva, Velma and Ivan ; Grace, wife of Ed Taylor, and they have three children, Mary Ellen, Georgianna, and Franklin ; and Carl Howard, at home. Mr. Summer is an independent voter. He holds membership in the Christian Church and is a substantial citizen of the community. HISTORY OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY - 849 James S. McPherson, retired, is a well known and highly esteemed citizen of Columbiana County and a member of one of the oldest families in this section of the state. He was born on the farm where he lives, Dec. 14, 1851, the son of Andrew and Nancy (McBane) McPherson. Andrew McPherson was a native of Madison Township and his wife was born in Yellow Creek Township. Many years ago they settled on the present McPherson farm in Madison Township, where they spent the remainder of their lives. Mr. McPherson died May 18, 1890, and his wife died April 28, 1883. They had eight children, as follows : Nancy, married William Asdell, both deceased ; Andrew, was a Civil War veteran, now deceased ; Elizabeth, married John Patterson, both deceased; Evan, lives in Idaho ; John and Daniel, both deceased ; James S., the subject of this sketch ; Mary Jane, married William Asdell, both deceased ; and Alexander, deceased. James S. McPherson spent his boyhood on the farm, and received his education in the district schools. He operated the farm with his father until the latter's death and has since been the owner. The farm contains 130 acres and is among the well improved places of the township. It is located on the Lincoln Highway and since Mr. McPherson's retirement has been operated by his son, F. C. McPherson. On July 3, 1890, Mr. McPherson was united in marriage with Miss Nancy McPherson, who was born in Madison Township, July 8, 1853, the daughter of Malcolm and Margaret (Noble) McPherson, natives of Columbiana County, both now deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. James S. McPherson two children were born: Margaret, lives at home ; and F. C., at home. Mrs. McPherson died Feb. 16, 1922, and is buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery, Yellow Creek Township. Mr. McPherson is a Republican and holds membership in the Presbyterian Church. E. K. Anderson is a well known and substantial citizen of Wellsville and Columbiana County. He was born in Yellow Creek Township, April 14, 1859, the son of Andrew and Lucy (Knipper) Anderson. Andrew Anderson, deceased, was a veteran of the Civil War. He was born in Yellow Creek Township and spent his entire life in this county, where he was successfully engaged in general farming and stock (17)V2 |
