FAMILY OF SMYTHE, REED AND LINNEL I'm a UK resident researching some American ancestors and have found your site very useful. I have recently inherited family photos and documents regarding the families of Henry P. Smythe and Dr. Calvin Hamilton Reed (who married Emma B Smythe, daughter of Henry). Emma's grandmother, Bethia Hannah Linnel, along with her parents, were some of the original members of the Licking Company who founded Granville, Licking Co, OH. Dr Reed's grandfather, Samuel Reed, settled Milford, Ohio. All these people feature on your site. If you would be interested in copies of these to add to your site, I would be pleased to send you scanned images and/or transcripts so that these can be used and enjoyed by many more people. If you are interested please let me know how to go about making the contributions. Many thanks, Kathryn Brooke Elstead, Surrey, UK |
This photo is of the portrait of Bethia Hannah Linnel painted in the 1830s, which I have in my possession. The information I have from my grandmother, Morelle Reed, is that it was painted in 1839 by Charles Cushing of Etna, Ohio. Bethiah traveled at age 15 from Massachusetts to Ohio with her parents, Joseph & Zerviah Linnell. They were members of The Licking Company, which planned and founded Granville, Ohio. As a curiosity, I also have a small block of wood engraved with the dates 1805 / 1905, which was given to her daughter, Emma (Smythe) Reed with this notation: "This piece of wood is from your Grandparents home, one of the first houses built in Granville, Ohio. |
Here's a photo of Sarah Knowles Harris, wife of Henry P. Smythe, with gr-grandchild Morelle Reed. Sarah appeared in the Smythe family photo as #2. Again, as Morelle was born in March, 1900, this photo must have been taken that year. Sarah was the daughter of Bethiah Hanah Linnel and Rev. Timothy Harris, who were part of the group that founded Granville, Ohio. |
Attached is a picture of Morgan Reed, my great-grandfather. I don't know the date this was done. He appears in the Smythe family photo as a young man, #5. He was the son of Dr. Calvin Reed. In her diary, Morgan's wife says he died suddenly, Tuesday morning August 20, 1912 of a malady that no one suspected and I was faced with four children to raise." I think I remember my mother telling me years ago that his death was caused by diabetes |
Emma Bethiah Smythe, who appears in the Smythe family photo, #3. She's holding her grand-daughter, Morelle Smythe Reed, my grandmother, who was born in March 1900, which means the photo must have been taken that year. Morelle was the daughter of Morgan Reed and Ada Fish, and because their first child was stillborn, his parents (Dr. & Mrs. Reed) insisted that they return to "the big house" at 537 Oliver Street, Toledo, for Morelle to be born. She lived to the ripe old age of 96! |
