MAE RIDER EPLEY was born in Union County June 24, 1891, daughter of Daniel Boone and Jennette (Foos) Rider. On January 23, 1915, she married LeRoy Clinton Epley who was born on the old Epley homestead May 28, 1888, son of George and Mary (Zeigler) Epley. Mr. Epley was a farmer all his life in Claridon Township. He died June 29, 1940. One daughter was born to this marriage, Virginia Mae, a graduate of Marion Business College. She is now a secretary at Marion Power Shovel Co. She is active in church and Sunday School work of Calvary Evangelical United Brethren Church. She married William J. Veness, a Navy veteran of three years during World War II. He is now associated with Ohio Associated Telephone Co. as a draftsman. Mrs. Epley is a member of Calvary Evangelical United Brethren Church and Progressive Grange (charter). She resides on the Epley farm on the Edison Road. WALTER E. MATHIOT, manager of Marion Municipal Airport, was born Aug. 16, 1895, at Portsmouth, son of Merton D. and Callie (Clutts) Mathiot. He attended schools in Portsmouth and served in the U. S. Army during both World War I and II. After the latter, he was released from duty with the rank of captain. He is now serving as commanding officer of Marion, Ohio, Defense Unit. He was manager of King's Beverages from 1938 to 1948. In 1950, he was appointed manager of the new Municipal Airport. He is a member of First Presbyterian Church, Marion Lodge 70 and Scioto Consistory of Masonry, Aladdin Temple Shrine, Marion Shrine Club, American Legion, and V. F. W. On Oct. 1, 1921, Mr. Mathiot married Madaline King who was born in Charlottesville, Va., daughter of Laurence C. and Birdie (Via) King, both natives of Virginia. Mr. King was a 32nd degree Mason and from 1922 until his death in June 1942, he owned and operated King's Beverages, the oldest bottling plant in Marion County. Mrs. Mathiot attended schools in Charlottesville and came to Delaware at the age of nine with her parents. She then went to school in Delaware and later attended Ohio Wesleyan University. Mr. and Mrs. Mathiot are the parents of two children: (1) Virginia, born Dec. 21, 1923, the first child born in Vernon Heights. Virginia Avenue was named in her honor. She attended Ohio University and married Howard H. Diehl, of Marion, a Marine Corps veteran of World War II in which he was awarded the Purple Heart. They have one son, Michael Laurence. (2) Walter K., born Sept. 16, 1925. He graduated from Ohio Military Institute in Cincinnati, attended Ohio State University, and is now in the Army Air Corps. RUTH ELLEN WILSON, co-editor of this volume and owner of The Yarn Shop in Marion, was born in Youngstown, daughter of Roy M. and Sylvia D. Wilson (see Index). Miss Wilson attended schools in Marion and graduated from high school in Hornell, N. Y., and from Ohio State University with a B. A. degree. She was a newspaper reporter for The Evening Tribune in Hornell, an employee in Erie Railroad offices in Newark, N. J., and wrote legal clauses for Prudential Insurance Co. in Newark prior to entering the WAVES Officers Training School in Nov. 1943, for service during World War II. In 1946 she was released from duty as a lieutenant (j. g.) which rank she holds on reserve status. She [350] then became associated with magazine work in New York City in an editorial capacity. She returned to Marion in 1948 and opened The Yarn Shop in October. Her hobbies are art and artcrafts, and she is interested in Y. M. C. A. work, acting as leader of a Girls Gra-Y Club. She participated in Y. broadcasts over WMRN. She is a member of the Presbyterian church, Assn. of University Women, Mid-Century Club (charter), Federation of Women's Clubs, Sales Ad Club, and Marion Chamber of Commerce. ARTHUR E. HABERMAN, Vice President of Prospect Citizens Bank in Prospect and Manager of the Green Camp branch of the bank in Green Camp, was born Jan. 5, 1889, in Green Camp Township, son of John and Catharine (Zieg) Haberman. His parents came from Germany and his father served in the Civil War and was wounded in the second battle of Bull Run. Mr. Haberman attended school in Green Camp and Heidelberg College. He taught school before becoming a farmer, which occupation he pursued until 1927 when he became associated with Peoples Bank of Green Camp. This bank later merged with Prospect Citizens Bank. Mr. Haberman is a member of Evangelical Reformed Church and he was superintendent of the Sunday School for thirty-two years and he has been a, Sunday School teacher most of his life. He is a member of Knights of Pythias Lodge and has been a member of Marion County Farm Bureau since its organization. His hobbies are baseball, football, literature, and looking after his farms. On Mar. 22, 1914, Mr. Haberman married Ruth Naomi Bricker, of Green Camp Township, daughter of J. F. and Louisa (Zieg) Bricker. She taught school a few years prior to her marriage. She is a member of Evangelical Reformed Church, Pythian Sisters, and Mt. Olive Grange. There are two children, both graduates of Green Camp High School and Heidelberg College: (1) Ava Mae, who taught school and was associated with The Ohio Public Service Co. at Elyria prior to her marriage to Dr. Russell Portman, of Amherst, O. Dr. and Mrs. Portman now reside at Lafayette, Ind. (2) John M., who is an assistant professor at Purdue University from which he received his master degree Feb. 6, 1949. DAMON GUTHERY, Superintendent of Maintenance at Marion Engineer Depot, was born Jan. 2, 1893, in Bowling Green Township, son of Isaac S. and Emma (Raub) Guthery. His father, a farmer, was president of Campbell National Bank of LaRue, State Representative (1912-14 and 1916-18), and was Director of Agriculture for Ohio from 1930 until his death in 1933. His grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John D. Guthery, came to Marion County in 1831. His great-grandfather, Joseph Guthery, served in the American Revolution and came to Pike County from Virginia. Damon Guthery graduated from LaRue High School, University School at Cleveland, and College of Agriculture at Cornell University. He farmed with his father from 1916 until his father's death. He then farmed three years with his brother, William Sherman Guthery (see Index). Since 1941 he has been in the employ of the government. He is a [351] member of LaRue Lodge F. & A. M. and Knights of Pythias. On Aug. 12, 1932, Mr. Guthery married Helen Carr who was born in LaRue, daughter of Wilke and Zobedia (Mulvaine) Carr. She is a member of First Presbyterian Church, Mary Lenox Chapter O. E. S. and Pythian Sisters. Mr. and Mrs. Guthery have as their hobby the breeding of English Bull dogs and their dogs have won many awards at shows. VIRGIL F. DYE, Manager of Harding Hotel in Marion, was born in Morrow County Aug. 22, 1906, son of Flint and Pearl (Cox) Dye, natives of Morrow County where Flint Dye was a farmer. Virgil F.'s paternal grandfather was a soldier in the Civil War. Mr. Dye attended grade and high schools in Edison and graduated from Harding High School in 1923. He was employed by Fairfield Engineering Co. for several months before becoming associated with Harding Hotel at the time of its opening in 1924. He left in December 1925, being employed in the following places: Altarep Hotel in Delray, Fla.; Argonne Hotel in Lima; and, Gibbons Hotel in Dayton. He returned to Marion in 1929 to become assistant manager of Harding Hotel. In 1933, he became manager. He served forty-nine months with the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was released to inactive duty with the rank of captain. He is a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, Rotary Club, Marion Chamber of Commerce, Marion Country Club, and Ohio Hotel Assn. On June 20, 1926, he married Mary Ellen Hyde, of Marion, daughter of Gustav and May (Corwin) Hyde. She is a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church. HAROLD F. DENZER, President and Manager of Schaffner-Denzer Co., Inc., in Marion, was born Dec. 25, 1892, in Waldo Township, son of William H. and Margaret H. Denzer. His grandfather, Barnhart Denzer, came to America from Germany about 1840. Mr. Denzer graduated from Marion High School and Marion Business College. He later graduated from Professor Buck's School of Embalming in Columbus, in 1922. He became associated with H. Schaffner Co. in 1913, and, in 1937, the company was reorganized and named the Schaffner-Denzer Co., Inc. He is a member of: Emanuel Lutheran Church; all bodies of Masonry; Aladdin Temple Shrine in Columbus; Kiwanis Club; Marion Chamber of Commerce; I. O. O. F.; Moose; Eagles; Knights of Pythias; and, State and National Funeral Directors associations. On June 11, 1916, Mr. Denzer married Hannah B. Manahan, of Urbana, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Manahan. Mrs. Denzer is an active member of Emanuel Lutheran Church. Mr. and Mrs. Denzer are the parents of three children: Margaret M.; Harold, Jr.; and Roger M. JOHN BARNARD DAVIS, Assistant Fulfillment Manager of Newsweek Magazine, was born Dec. 11, 1919, at Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard Island, Mass., son of Probate Judge Arthur Werner Davis and Harriet B. (Orswell) Davis. Mr. Davis attended Belmont Hill School in Massachusetts and became associated with Newsweek in New York City in 1938. He served in the Army Air Corps ground force for four years during World War II, almost three years of which were spent in the South Pacific. He [352] then returned to Newsweek in New York and later was associated with Fulfillment Corp. of America for a time before accepting his present position. He is a member of the Congregationalist Church. On Mar, 29, 1947, Mr. Davis married Kathleen Marie Henden who was born Dec. 3, 1923, at Viroqua, Wise., daughter of Benjamin I. and Anna Marie (Johnson) Henden. Mrs. Davis is a graduate of Whitewater State Teachers College at Whitewater, Wisc. She taught two years in the Wisconsin high schools and two and one-half years at Washington School for Secretaries in New York City. She is now on the staff of Marion Bus mess College. She is a member of the Lutheran church, Current Topics Club, and Association of University Women. Mr. and Mrs. Davis have one. son, John Barnard Davis, Jr., who was born in Marion Oct. 19, 1948. THEODORE PAUL FRERICKS, attorney in Marion, was born in Cleveland Oct. 20, 1917, son of Theodore J. and Helen (Kunz) Frericks. His father is a structural engineer in Columbus. Mr. Frericks graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1935. He received his A. B. degree in 1939 and his LL.B. degree in 1942 from Notre Dame University. He served three years with the U, S. Navy during World War II and was released from service with the rank of lieutenant (j. g.). In July of 1945, he was admitted to the Ohio Bar. He has practiced law in Marion since September 1945. Mr. Frericks is a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, and Y. M. C. A. Men's Club. On Oct. 26, 1943, he married Dorothy Jane Fetter who was born in Marion, daughter of Paul A. and Faye (Clark) Fetter. Mrs. Frericks graduated from Mt. Carmel School of Nursing and St. Mary's-of-the-Springs in Columbus. Children: (1) Theodore P., born Sept. 29, 1944. (2) Thomas Alfred, born Dec. 13, 1945. (3) Timothy Matthew, born June 5, 1949. WALTER GROVER MALO, partner in Malo Brothers and Sons scrap iron business in Marion, with plants in Marion, Galion, and Mansfield, was born in Morral Apr. 18, 1888, third child in the family of eight children of Philip and Catherine (Spohn) Malo who came to America from Rocheinhauser, Rheinland Pfalz, Germany. They stayed in Columbus for a short time and then moved to Morral where they owned and operated a general store. Philip Malo came to Marion in 1899 and started the scrap iron business with which he was connected until his death. Walter Grover Malo attended schools in Morral and, at an early age, entered business with his father. After the death of their father, Waiter Grover Malo and his two brothers, Otto Malo (see Index) and Hugo Malo (see Index), continued operation of the business. Mr. Malo is affiliated with German Reformed Church. He is a member of I. O. O. F. and Elks Lodge. His hobby is fishing. On Oct. 17, 1906, he married Minnie Klehm, daughter of Conrad and Margaret (Schmidt) Klehm who came to America from Germany and settled in Marion. Mrs. Malo is a member of German Reformed Church, D. of A., and W. B. A. Children: (1) Lillian, born Nov. 28, 1907. She married Elbert J. Smith who is associated with Malo Brothers & Sons in [353] Marion. They have two daughters, Sandra Kay and Linda Carrol. (2) Philip Conrad, born Oct. 29, 1909, partner in Malo Brothers & Sons. He married Clara Marie McGill and they have two daughters, Phyllis Marie and Patricia Corene. (3) Thelma Florence, born Oct. 6, 1911. She graduated from Mt. Carmel Hospital in Columbus as an R. N. and was associated with Marion City Hospital about ten years, three years of which' she served as assistant superintendent. She is now devoting her time to private nursing. JAMES McKAY RANKIN, Vice President and General Manager of White Oldsmobile, Inc., in Marion, was born in Athens Mar. 1, 1912. His father, Peter Rankin, a native of Edinburgh, Scotland, came to America in 1909 and settled in southern Ohio where he was in the coal mining business. His mother, Jean (McKay) Rankin, was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and came to America with her husband and their three oldest children, Alice (Rankin) Olson, of Mansfield, Helen (Rankin) Gross, of Akron, and George, of Gloucester. The two youngest children, Elsie and James, were born in Ohio. Mr. Rankin graduated from Chauncey High School and later took specialized training at Ohio University. He has been in the automobile business since 1929. He came to Marion in 1945 to become associated with White Oldsmobile, Inc. He is a member of: Christian Church; Lancaster Lodge, Marion Chapter, Council, and Commandery of Masonry; Lions Club; and, Marion Chamber of Commerce. His hobbies are hunting and fishing. He has one son, James McKay Rankin, Jr., born Jan. 19, 1940. CURTIS LeROY PACE was born near Caledonia Aug. 12, 1896, son of Charles M. and Anna (Mathias) Pace. Mr. Pace attended schools in Caledonia and learned the machinist trade in the Erie Railroad Co. shops. He has been employed as a machinist by the Erie for the past twenty-seven years. He is a member of Marion Lodge 70 F. & A. M. and the Eagles. On May 18, 1918, Mr. Pace married Marie Elizabeth Gruber who was born Aug. 6, 1898, daughter of Isaac and Emma (Keyes) Gruber (see Index). Mr. and Mrs. Pace are members of Salem Evangelical and Reformed Church. Children: (1) Robert LeRoy, born Feb. 22, 1919. He served with the Marine Corps during World War II and is now associated with Jay Maish Co. He married Dorothy Bailey and they have two sons, Robert Eugene and Gary Lee. (2) Evelyn Louise (Mrs. Oliver M. Johnston) who was born Aug. 16, 1921. She has three daughters, Marie Ann, Claudia Louise, and Phyllis Kay. (3) Virginia Marie (Mrs. Edward C. Thomas) who was born Dec. 31, 1923. She has one son, Stephen Lee. DON ROY BIGGERT, district sales representative for Commercial Motor Freight, Inc., with a branch office in Marion, was born in Andover, Kans., Sept. 26, 1888, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Biggert. Mr. Biggert attended country schools in Franklin County and completed his education in Urbana. He came to Marion in 1916. He served six terms as councilman for the Fourth Ward. He is a charter member of Sojourners Lodge F. & A. M. Mr. and Mrs. Biggert and family are members of First Presbyterian Church. There are four children: (1) Melba Jeane (Mrs. Robert [354] Hochstetter) of Marion, who has two sons, Gregory and Randolph Stephen. (2) Donna Rae (Mrs. I. F. Bishman) of Middletown, who has two sons, Jeffrey and Mark. (3) Thomas Y., of Marion, a U. S. Army Air Corps veteran of two and one-half years of service during World War II, one and one-half years of which were spent in the South Pacific. He married Mary Barbara Hansberger. (4) Polly Ann. LEROY F. SCHNEIDER, owner of Schneider Bros. Sheet Metal Shop in Marion, was born Nov. 11, 1901, in the house where his metal shop is now located, son of John and Alice (Endicott) Schneider. In 1904, his father, with Frank M. Beverly, purchased the J. W. Wren business which had been founded in 1858. In 1914, Mr. Schneider purchased Mr. Beverly's interest in the company and took his four sons, Charles W., Edward J., George 0., and Leroy F., into the business with him. At the time of their father's death in 1932, Leroy F. and Charles W. became owners of the shop. Mr. Schneider attended Greenwood School and Marion High School and learned to be a sheet metal worker with his father. He also was associated with his father in a hardware store until it was sold in 1928. He is a member of Trinity Baptist Church. His hobbies are fishing, woodworking, and photography. On Aug. 24, 1924, he married Maybelle Duffey, of Marion, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Horace G. Duffey. She is a member of Trinity Baptist Church, Lecture Recital Club, and State and National Federated Boards. Her hobby is music. There is one daughter, Sally Irene, born Jan. 14, 1937. LOWELL DWIGHT PARISH, pastor of LaRue Baptist Church, was born in Big Island Township near Meeker May 1, 1916, son of A. A. and Hazel (Frame) Parish. His father is a retired farmer now living in Big Island Township near Meeker on land which Lowell Dwight Parish's maternal grandfather, Smitty Frame, purchased from the government and the Indians. Mr. Parish graduated from Montgomery High School and operated his father's farm thirteen years, after which he became a student of religion at Bob Jones University at Greenville, S. C. He then did evangelistic work prior to coming to LaRue as pastor of the Baptist Church in 1946. He is a member of the LaRue Businessmen's Club. On May 20, 1934, Mr. Parish married Anna Belle Stoll who was born in Marion June 19, 1918, daughter of Albertus M. and Mary (Millisor) Stoll. Mrs. Parish is a member of the Baptist Church. Children (1) Joyce Ann, born May 28, 1935. (2) Lowell Dwight, Jr., born Feb. 18, 1940. (3) Janice Kay, born May 24, 1941. (4) Michael Anson, born July 13, 1945. ROBERT T. BRADLEY, manager of Producers Livestock Cooperative Assn. in Marion, was born in Madison County Apr. 10, 1905, son of F. T. and Effie (Stoner) Bradley. His father is a livestock dealer and auctioneer in Mechanicsburg. Mr. Bradley graduated from Ohio State University College of Agriculture, in 1926. He then farmed for eleven years in Madison County, after which he worked for the U. S. Department of Agriculture five years. In 1942, he became associated with Producers Livestock Cooperative Assn. and worked at the following locations: Findlay; Fos- [355] toria; Vincennes, Ind.; and Washington, Ind. He came to Marion in May 1947. He is a member of Epworth Methodist Church. His hobbies are saddle horses, hunting, and other sports. On July 2, 1927, Mr. Bradley married Harriet McMahill of Woodstock, daughter of Harry F. and Ada (Clark) McMahill. She is a graduate of Oberlin Conservatory of Music. She is a member of Epworth Methodist Church and director of the Junior Choir. Children: (1) John R.., born Feb. 11, 1929, a student at Princeton University. (2) Marilyn, born Oct. 13, 1936. CARRIE FULTON PHILLIPS, widow of James Eaton Phillips, was born in Bucyrus Sept. 22, 1874, only daughter in a family of seven children of Mathew Henry and Kate (Swingley) Fulton. Her father, a native of Pittsburgh, was a direct descendent of Robert Fulton, inventor of the steamboat. Her mother, a native of Bucyrus, lived to be ninety-four years old. Her maternal grandfather, Dr. Frederick Swingley, physician and surgeon in Bucyrus, was a direct descendent of the Swiss reformer, Ulrich Zwingli, who was born in 1484. The Swingley family had several generations of doctors. Mrs. Phillips taught school in Bucyrus for a short time before her marriage to James Eaton Phillips, on June 10, 1896. Mr. Phillips was the son of Samuel and Mary (Ellis) Phillips. His father was a soldier in the Civil War. His great-great-grandfather, Lt. Ellis, served during the American Revolution. Mr. Phillips, who was in the mercantile business all his life, was co-owner of Uhler-Phillips Co. in Marion until his death July 5, 1939. He was very active in civic affairs in Marion and was a Mason and a member of First Presbyterian Church. He served for some time on the City Council. Children: (1) James Fulton Phillips, born May 2, 1902, who died in 1904. (2) Isabelle Phillips, born Mar. 25, 1897, in Marion. She graduated from Dr. Luce's School in Berlin and from Mrs. Dow's School at Briar Cliff Manor-on-the-Hudson. She married William H. Mathee who was born in Aachen,Germany. He was United Stated Consul at Zurich, Switzerland, at the time of the death of President Warren G. Harding. He was invited to represent America at the memorial services which were held in honor of President Harding at Berne. Mr. and Mrs. Mathee are the parents of one son, William H., Jr. He served with the U. S. Army Air Forces during World War II. He married Jane Lou Hoag, daughter of The Very Reverend Victor Hoag and Mrs. Hoag of Eau Claire, Wisc. JOHN HOWARD MOORE, architect in Marion, was born Mar. 25, 1891, oldest child in the family of twelve children of Thomas C. and Susie (Rudolph) Moore. Thomas C. Moore was a farmer in Union County, farming the land which his father, John H. Moore, had settled and cleared. John Howard Moore attended public schools in Union and Marion counties. He graduated from New Bloomington High School and attended Ohio Northern University School of Engineering and Ohio State University School of Architecture. On Dec. 14, 1917, he enlisted for service in the Army Air Corps. After being honorably discharged on Jan. 10, 1919, with the rating of first-class sergeant, he returned to Marion which had been his home since 1913. From 1919 to 1924, he was engaged [356] in the general contracting business. He was then associated with Ronan and Ingleson, architects and engineers in Columbus. Since 1934, he has been an architect in Marion. He designed the first Montgomery Ward store in Marion, the Haberman garage and numerous other buildings, including the design for the First Evangelical United Brethren Church. He also designed the post office and swimming pool in Upper Sandusky and was associate architect for the construction of Galion Post Office in 1935. He is a member of Epworth Methodist Church and Bird McGinnis Post American Legion (commander 1948). He is interested in baseball, football, golf and other sports. On Nov. 25, 1920, Mr. Moore married Ola Knowles who is a native of Marion. She attended Ohio Wesleyan, Bowling Green, and Kent State universities and taught school prior to her marriage. Since 1941, she has been teaching in Marion public schools. She is a member of First Presbyterian Church. JUDSON BUNYAN HOLLOWAY, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church in Marion, was born in Covington County, Ala., Feb. 4, 1897, son of John William and Mary Clara (Halstead) Holloway. His father was a member of Florida State Board of Missions for several years. Prior to studying for the ministry, Mr. Holloway was employed as a railroad office worker and served in the Army during World War I. He received his B. A. degree from Washington and Lee University in 1923, his M. A. degree from Vanderbilt University in 1924, and his Th.M. degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., in 1926. He was licensed to preach by Immanuel Baptist Church of Nashville, Tenn., on Dec. 5, 1923, and was ordained to the ministry at Walnut Street Baptist Church in Louisville, Ky., Apr. 1, 1925. He was pastor of Price Hill Baptist Church in Cincinnati from 1927 to 1937. He then served four and one-half years as pastor of the First Baptist Church at Ironton before coming to Marion Feb. 1, 1942. He served as Chaplain in the Navy during World War II. He is a member of Marion Kiwanis Club, Marion County Council of Churches (past president), Assn. Evangelistic Committee (past chairman and moderator). On Nov. 3, 1923, he married Thelma Celeste Shelton, of Charleston, S. C. Mrs. Holloway attended Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and received a certificate from the Missionary Training School. Mr. and Mrs. Holloway have served on various state committees in the field of religion. There are three children: (1) Arthur Shelton, born Sept. 21, 1925, a graduate of Baldwin Wallace College, who served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. (2) June Celeste, born April 4, 1927, a graduate of Florida State University. (3) William Ronald, born Feb. 6, 1930, a student at Florida State University. ARTHUR F. BUSCH, manager of Marion division of Standard Oil Co. (Ohio), was born Aug. 27, 1894, in Cleveland, son of Arthur H. and Elizabeth (Campbell) Busch. Mr. Busch received his education in Cleveland and served twenty-six months with the 135th Field Artillery, 37th Divn., during World War I, with one year spent overseas. He has been associated with Standard Oil Co. since 1912, having been in Cleveland, [357] Ravenna, and Mansfield, prior to coming to Marion. He is a member of Mansfield Lodge F. & A. M., American Legion, Chamber of Commerce, and Marion Kiwanis Club. He is a lieutenant governor of the Seventh District of Ohio Kiwanis. On Jan. 2, 1918, Mr. Busch married Marion C. Albright who was born in Cleveland, daughter of Herman and Lillian (Reiderbach) Albright. There is one son, Jameson. EDWIN ERNST SMITH, President of Smith Mattress Co., was born Dec. 24, 1865, at Winesburg, O., son of William T. Smith, a native of Winesburg, and Paulina (Yeager) Smith, a native of Germany. Mr. Smith moved to Marion in 1888 and built the company's building on Blaine Ave., when Smith Mattress Co. was transferred here from Winesburg where it had been founded in 1840. by Christian Smith, grandfather of Edwin Ernst Smith. The Smith Mattress Co. is the oldest mattress business in the United States and it has always belonged to members of the Smith family. On Aug. 23, 1904, Edwin Ernst Smith married Laura Hemphill who was born at Rushylvania Sept. 30, 1882, daughter of J. H. and Mary (Routte) Hemphill. Mr. Smith is a Mason and a member of Knights of Pythias. Mrs. Smith is secretary and treasurer of the company and is a member of First Presbyterian Church, Current Topics Club, Green Thumb Garden Club, Lydia Chapter O. E. S., Marion White Shrine of Jerusalem, and Pythian Sisters (charter) . There are two sons: (1) Robert Y. (see Index). (2) Edwin F., who is associated with the company and is married to Lou Leland, of Chicago. He served as a commissioned officer during World War II. MABEL E. WHEATLEY, daughter of Rev. Robert Dombaugh Wheatley and Nancy (Dodds) Wheatley, was born in Montgomery County near Dayton on the estate of her grandfather, Joseph Wheatley, a native of Boston whose parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Wheatley, came from Yorkshire, England, about 1775 and established in Boston the first silk mill in America. Joseph Wheatley later moved to Ohio and settled in Montgomery County. He was apointed second lieutenant governor of Ohio, but, before his inauguration, he resigned to take an active part in the Civil War, in an administrative capacity. Rev. Robert Dombaugh Wheatley was a professor of music and later became a minister of the Presbyterian denomination. He received his education at Ohio Wesleyan University, Wooster College, and Lane Theological Seminary at which institution he was examiner in the Greek and Hebrew languages for twenty years. Miss Wheatley's mother was a native of Nancy, France, and she came to Montgomery County with her parents, Preston and Matilda (Chevrolet) Dodds, while a child. Miss Wheatley attended Dayton public schools and Oxford College and Miami University at Oxford. She studied music with W. L. Blumenshine in Dayton and attended Dayton Art School. The family moved to Cincinnati and Miss Wheatley continued her study of music with Prof. Van Der Stucken and her study of art under the direction of Miss Theobaudt of Cincinnati Art School. While traveling one winter in the Spanish [358] countries, she studied art with Neuave and Gerona. She was. director of Overlook, Chautauqua, N. Y., under the direction of New York University. She later came to Marion to make her home with her uncle and aunt, Dr. and Mrs. Russell Bowdish. Dr. Bowdish was one of Marion's early settlers, living in his father's log cabin which was located on the present site of Lincoln Park. His father owned a tract of land in Big Island Township which has always remained in the family and is now owned Miss Wheatley. Dr. Bowdish was a charter member of Ohio Medical Assn. Miss Wheatley, while in Marion, has been active in church and club work. She is a member of First Presbyterian Church and was counselor for ten years of the young people's group and director of the Sunday School Orchestra three years. She is a member of Marion Art Club (charter, past-president), Three Arts Club, What-So-Ever Circle of Kings Daughters, House and Garden Club (past-president), and she was chairman of art for Ohio Federation of Women's Clubs two years and chairman in the department of fine arts for three years. Her hobbies are giving private instruction in art and music and making artistic decorations. LOUIS DELMAR HAMILTON, Jr., distributor of building and maintenance products with headquarters in Marion, was born in Marion Aug. 8, 1893, son of Dr. L. D. Hamilton and Ida May (David) Hamilton. His father practiced medicine in Marion forty-five years. Louis Delmar, Jr., attended Marion schools and graduated from Marion High School. He then went to Cleveland where he became associated with Addressograph-Multigraph Corp., and he was in the sales division twenty-five years. He opened offices for the firm in Akron and Oklahoma City, Okla. In 1942 he returned to Marion from, Boston, Mass. He is a member of First Presbyterian Church (past president Board of Deacons, and a member of Board of Trustees), Windemere Lodge F. & A. M., and McKinley Chapter R. A. M. His hobbies are gardening and fishing. On Oct. 25, 1916, Mr. Hamilton married Mildred Bain Lippincott, daughter of Christopher S. and Flora (Bain) Lippincott. Her father was in the real estate business in Marion about fifty years. Mrs. Hamilton attended American Conservatory of Music and graduated from Thomas Normal Training School at Detroit. She was supervisor of art in Belleville, N. J., before her marriage. She is a member of First Presbyterian Church, George Washington Chapter of Daughters of American Colonists in Akron, Marion Art Club, Women's Century Club, Marion County Federation of Womens Clubs (past trustee), Town and Country Garden Club and Marion Hospital Board. Her hobby is painting. Children: (1) Louis Delmar 3rd, born Nov. 6, 1918, in Cleveland. He now resides in Dallas, Tex. He attended Cleveland College and University of Akron. He served six years in the Army Air Corps as a pilot with the 9th Fighter Command and flew ninety-six combat missions. He was released from service with the rank of first lieutenant. He married Joyce Latham, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Latham, of Boswell, Okla. They have one daughter, Diana Lynn. (2) Stuart Lippincott, born in Akron Apr. 3, 1924. He is a veteran of World War II, in which he served three years with the 652nd T. D. Division of the Army. He is employed with the Signal Engineering Dept. of Erie R. R., with offices in Cleveland. [359] MYRTLE S. ROBY was born in Grand Township, daughter of Joseph A. and Mary (Hartle) Sanford. Her father was a farmer in Grand Township. Her great-great-great-great-grandfather, Col. Thomas Cresap, of Revolutionary War fame, was Colonel of the Sons of Liberty and active in frontier service for half a century. Her great-great-great-grandfather, Captain Michael Cresap, was First Captain of "Rifle Battalion," a volunteer company of infantrymen. Mrs. Roby received her education in the rural schools and at Mt. Victory High School. On Oct. 8, 1902, she married Otto V. Roby who was born in Hardin County, son of Enoch O. and Wilhelmina (Bower) Roby. Otto V. Roby graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University and was foreman of maintenance for Marion City Water Co. for twenty-six years. He died Sept. 14, 1940. Children: (1) and (2) Twins, Helen and Harold. Harold died in infancy. Helen, now a resident of Perrysburg, graduated from Wooster College and taught school four years. She married Charles A. Braun, Jr., and they have one daughter, Gretchen. (3) Joseph R., who attended Wooster College and is now special agent for John Hancock Life Insurance Co. in Mansfield. At one time, he was a partner in Watrous Roby Insurance Co. in Marion, after which he served three years with the U. S. Navy during World War II. He married Grace Steiner who attended Wooster College, and they have one son, John S. (4) Mary Elizabeth, of Evanston, Ill., who attended Ohio University. She married Kent E. Pool, a graduate of Ohio State University, and they have one daughter, Fairlynn. Mrs. Roby is a member of First Presbyterian Church, Lydia Chapter O. E. S., Marion White Shrine of Jerusalem, Daughters of the American Revolution, Circle-of-Service King's Daughters, Good Earth Garden Club, Sesame Club. Mrs. Roby and her only sister, Effie Sanford Boyd, reside on N. Seffner Avenue in Marion. HAROLD FRANKLIN CASSELL, General Manager and Vice President of Short Ford, Inc., in Marion, was born Nov. 5,1907, in Dayton, son of H. W. and Jeanette (Hinea) Cassell. Mr. Cassell graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University and has been affiliated with the automobile business for the past fifteen years. He came to Marion in 1949. He is a member of First Presbyterian Church, Delta Tau Delta, Kiwanis Club, Marion Chamber of Commerce, Marion Country Club, Masonic Lodge. On June 19, 1937, Mr. Cassell married Charlotte Maxine Hayes, of Bellefontaine, daughter of Lee G. and Edna (Hanaway) Hayes. Mrs. Cassell attended Kinman University in Spokane, Wash. She is a member of First Presbyterian Church, Order of Eastern Star, and Marion Country Club. Children: (1) Thomas H., born July 16, 1940. (2) Richard L., born Nov. 19, 1942. SYLVIA D. WILSON, co-editor of this volume and of Who's Who in Potter County, was born near Lovington, Ill., on the farm of her paternal grandfather, John W. Dixon, a native of Ohio who served with Sherman on his march to the sea during the Civil War and later took his family to Illinois where he entered government land. Her father, Charles E. Dixon, was a farmer and businessman and her mother, Ellen (Apple- [360] man) Dixon was a classmate of Warren G. Harding at Ohio Central College. On Mar. 14, 1915, Mrs. Wilson was married to Roy M. Wilson, who was born in Galion, son of James Wilson, a native of County Donegal, Ireland, and Ora (Lindly) Wilson, a native of Richland County who now resides in Galion. Mr. Wilson was a supervisor in the mechanical depart. ment of the Erie Railroad Co. for more than twenty-five years. He was general foreman of the Erie Roundhouse in Marion from 1918 until 1928 and later was superintendent of the Erie's large repair shop in Hornell, N. Y. He also was an inventor. He died Jan. 15, 1942. There are three children: (1) Ruth Ellen (see Index). (2) June who is a graduate of Barnard College. She was on the instruction staff at Barnard, at Idaho State College, and at the University of Bridgeport, Conn., and is now engaged in doing free lance research. She married Chester A. Bain who is a member of the staff of the University of Bridgeport. They have two sons, Chester Arthur, Jr., and James Robert. (3) James R., a captain in the U. S. Army at Kassel, Germany. He attended Ohio State University and has served in the Army since November 1942. He married Jeanne O'Malley, of Newark, N. J., and they have one daughter, Sharon Ann, who was born in Germany. Mrs. Wilson is a member of the Presbyterian Church, Lydia Chapter O. E. S., and she was president of the Hornell High School P. T. A. from 1937 to 1939. She was a charter member of the Sorosis Club in Marion and was one of the club's early presidents. During World War II, she did volunteer work in St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell as a Red Cross Nurse's Aide. Her hobbies are knitting and needlework.
