HISTORY OF NORTHEASTERN OHIO - 975 entered the mines and two years later became a brakeman on the Pennsylvania Railroad. He served in the latter capacity until 1923, and at that time entered the employ of the Euclid Crane & Hoist Company, at Cleveland. He began his career in the automobile business at Willoughby in 1926 as a salesman for I. M. Crowther, Buick dealer. During the following year he located at Painesville, and since October, 1929, Mr. Merrick has conducted a business of his own in this city. He continued as dealer for the Plymouth and DeSoto automobiles until October, 1932, and has since been Chevrolet agent. He employs 27 people, seven of whom are salesmen. During 1933 Mr. Merrick's agency sold 120 passenger cars and 19 motor trucks. His record for 1934 includes the sale of 181 cars and trucks. In 1932 Mr. Merrick married Miss Molly Masek, a native of Cleveland, and a graduate of Lake County Memorial Hospital. She is a registered nurse. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Masek, who are natives of Czecho-Slovakia, and residents of Kirtland, Ohio. Mr. and Mrs. Merrick have two daughters, Barbara Ann, born June 28, 1933; and Sandra Henrietta, born Sept. 28, 1934. Mr. Merrick is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and belongs to the Elks Lodge, Chamber of Commerce, and American Legion. Politically he is independent. George Bay is among the progressive and capable business men of Painesville, where he is the proprietor of a cabinet making shop at 466 West Jackson Street. He was born in Hungary, May 4, 1870, the son of John B. and Anna (Antolfe) Backosky. John B. Backosky was a millwright by trade, as was his father and grandfather. He was born in Hungary and in 1890 emigrated to the United States. He remained in 976 - HISTORY OF NORTHEASTERN OHIO New York City for six years and then returned to his native land, where he died in 1897. His widow then made a return voyage to the United States, and died at Cleveland, Ohio, in 1913. She is buried there. Their children were: 1. George, subject of this sketch. 2. Joseph, a locksmith, met with an accidental death in 1914. He was a Spanish-American War veteran, and at the time of his death was employed in the Brooklyn Navy Yards as a mechanic. 3. Lila, deceased, was the wife of Steve Uzab. Their children were: Martin, lives in Cleveland; Edward, lives in Oregon; and Helen, deceased. George Bay attended the schools of his native land and when 15 years of age became an apprentice cabinet maker. He has continuously followed that trade to the present time. Mr. Bay went to Boston, Mass., in 1906, later spent almost three years at Amesbury, Mass., three years at Cleveland, Ohio, and since 1913 has been a resident of Painesville. He was employed by the Chickering Piano Company, Voss Piano Company, Jacob Doll Piano Company, and Theodore Kundtz Company. Upon his arrival in Painesville, Mr. Bay was connected with the Wadsworth Cabinet Shop for almost five years, and since 1919 he has conducted his own business. His new factory was erected during 1927. Mr. Bay specializes in general woodwork, store fronts, mirror frames, and store show cases. His modern plant is equipped for all types of woodworking. On Feb. 7, 1897, Mr. Bay was united in marriage with Miss Julia Secor, of Hungary, daughter of Peter and Barbara Secor. The father died at Derby, Conn., and the mother died in Hungary. To Mr. and Mrs. Bay have been born eight children: 1. Edward, born Sept. 8, 1899, lives at Cleveland. He married Miss Mary Hires, and they have three children: Robert, Florence, and William. 2. Anna, born Feb. 18, 1903, married Norbert Murphy, lives at Cleveland, and they have two children, Dorothy and Charles. 4. George, born Feb. 10, 1905, lives at Chardon. He married Louella Hessel, and they have two children: Georgia Lou and Jacqueline. 5. Bertha, born June 19, 1907, married Ted Feuhe, lives at Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. 6. Margaret, born June 29, 1911, married Wayne Myers, lives at Willoughby. They have a son, Jack. 7. Frank, born Oct. 10, 1913, unmarried, lives at home. 8. Albert, born March 16, 1918, lives at home. Mr. Bay is a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, at Painesville, and belongs to the Knights of Columbus. William Pelat. —One of the better known and highly successful business men of Painesville is William Pelat, owner and manager of Pelat's Restaurant, at 152 Main Street. He was born in Greece, Aug. 15, 1897, the son of Antonio and Catherine Pelat. William Pelat emigrated to the United States in 1912. He had been educated in his native land, but attended night school at Monessen, Pa., where he settled shortly upon his arrival in this country. He conducted a restaurant business there and was also interested in the confectionery business for a time. Mr. Pelat went to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1916, and four years later owned his own restaurant in that city. In the spring of 1921 he came to Painesville, and at that time took over the management of the Painesville Dining Hall, located in the Cowles Hotel. In 1924 the Painesville Restaurant Company was organized by Mr. Pelat and in that year the Pelat Restaurant was opened and managed by Mr. Pelat. It is of two story construction, the second floor being reserved for private dinners and parties. Approximately 20 people are employed by Mr. Pelat and the restaurant serves 978 - HISTORY OF NORTHEASTERN OHIO between 700 and 800 meals daily. As many as 1,000 meals have been served daily during the busy season. The Pelat Restaurant is open for 24 hours daily and is headquarters for the Kiwanis Club weekly luncheons, as well as other public functions. On April 7, 1929, Mr. Pelat was united in marriage with Miss Helen Mionou, a native of Greece. They have a daughter, Demetra Fay, born June 15, 1933. Mr. Pelat holds membership in the Greek Orthodox Church of Cleveland, and is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge, Al Koran Shrine, Elks Lodge, Knights of Pythias, Kiwanis Club, and Chamber of Commerce. A sister of Mr. Pelat, Anna, is the wife of George Kiussis, and lives at Cleveland. They have two children, Catherine and Nicholas. Paul Kallay, who is vice president of Kallay Bros. Company, is numbered among the highly successful business men and representative citizens of Painesville. He is a prominent member of the Lake County Nurserymen's Association, and also belongs to the Ohio and American Nurserymen's Associations. Mr. Kallay was born in Hungary, June 26, 1887, the son of Sebastian and Rose (Martin) Kallay. A biography of Sebastian Kallay appears elsewhere in this history in the sketch of his son, Charles Kallay. In 1900 Paul Kallay came to the United States. He had received his education in the public schools of his native land and upon his arrival in the United States he became interested in the nursery business at Painesville as an associate of his father, Sebastian Kallay. In 1905 Mr. Kallay enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps and traveled throughout the world during his enlistment. He subsequently studied law at the American Law School, at Los Angeles, Calif. and was ad- HISTORY OF NORTHEASTERN OHIO - 979 mitted to practice in the Canal Zone. He engaged in government secret service work in the Panama Canal Zone for 16 years, being in charge of the Atlantic end of the Canal Zone, as supervisor of Latin-American enforcement of the white slave and narcotic laws. In 1927 Paul Kallay became identified with the nursery business of his brothers, which had been incorporated in 1926. He is vice president, office manager and sales manager. On May 29, 1915, Mr. Kallay was united in marriage with Miss Mary Kentosh, of Fairport, Ohio, daughter of John and Mary (Masley) Kentosh, both deceased. Mr. Kentosh is buried at Painesville and his wife at Cleveland. To Mr. and Mrs. Kallay were born five children: 1. Pauline, born May 16, 1916. 2. Paul, Jr., born Aug. 12, 1917. 3. Edward, born Oct. 8, 1921. 4. Jeanne, born Feb. 14, 1924. 5. Nancy, born Jan. 1, 1934. Mr. Kallay is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge, being a member of the Blue Chapter, Commandery, Council, and Abou Saad Temple, at the Canal Zone. He also belongs to the Shrine Club, of Painesville, and is a member of the Citizens Culture Club of Fairport. James Kallay. —One of the better known young business men and representative citizens of Lake County is James Kallay, who is a director of Kallay Bros. Company, nurserymen of Painesville. He was born in Hungary, Nov. 25, 1893, the son of Sebastian and Rose (Martin) Kallay. A biography of Sebastian Kallay appears elsewhere in this history in the sketch of his son, Charles Kallay. In 1908 James Kallay emigrated to the United States and immediately came to Painesville, where he was identified with his father's nursery business as manager of the fruit 980 - HISTORY OF NORTHEASTERN OHIO department until 1914. He has since been associated with his brothers as owners of one of the leading nursery businesses in the United States. They own and operate 325 acres of land in Lake County. On July 20, 1912, Mr. Kallay married Miss Mary Szyarko, born in Hungary, daughter of Michael and Mary Szyarko. Both are deceased, and are buried in Painesville and Hungary, respectively. To Mr. and Mrs. Kallay have been born the following children: 1. Margaret, born Aug. 30, 1913. 2. James, born Dec. 17, 1916, a graduate from Harvey High School, class of 1935. 3. He and his family are members of St. Mary's Catholic Church, and he belongs to St. Stephen's Lodge, and Hungarian Men's Civic Club of Fairport. Steve Kallay. —Identified with Kallay Bros. Company, at Painesville, Mr. Kallay is widely and favorably known as one of the successful nurserymen of Lake County. He was born in Hungary, July 1, 1889, the son of Sebastian and Rose (Martin) Kallay. Sebastian Kallay's biography appears in the sketch of his son, Charles Kallay. Following his arrival in the United States in 1904, Steve Kallay became associated with the greenhouse and nursery business of Storres & Harrison, at Painesville, with whom he remained for 12 years. He then spent a year as superintendent of the Frank D. Rockefeller estate at Wickliffe. Mr. Kallay also was gardener on the private estate of E. W. Moore during three years of his residence in Lake County. He has been connected with his brothers' nursery business HISTORY OF NORTHEASTERN OHIO - 981 at Painesville since 1920, and the business was incorporated as Kallay Bros. Company in 1926. He is a director of the organization. On July 24, 1909, Mr. Kallay was united in marriage with Miss Emma Pasztirak, born in Hungary, daughter of John and Mary Pasztirak. They are residents of Hungary. To Mr. and Mrs. Kallay have been born eight children, as follows: 1. He also holds membership in the Lake County, Ohio, and American Nurserymen's Associations. Jennings Kallay. —As a director of Kallay Bros. Company, nurserymen, Mr. Kallay ranks among the progressive and able young business men of Painesville. He was born in Hungary, July 29, 1902, the son of Sebastian and Rose (Martin) Kallay. Following his graduation from the public schools of Painesville, Jennings Kallay was employed by Storres & Harrison, nurserymen, until 1911. He then went to Cleveland, and later located with the Diamond Alkali Corporation, at Fairport Harbor, with whom he remained until 1920. On Nov. 17, 1926, Mr. Kallay married Miss Anna Snorts, daughter of Addison and Estelle (Wynne) Snorts, of Adamsville, Ohio. They reside at Lyerly, Ga. To Mr. and Mrs. Kallay have been born four children: 1. Eugene Wynne, born Oct. 4, 1927. 2. David Hooper, born Aug. 25, 1929. 3. Estelle Rose, born April 18, 1933. 4. Evelyn Jane, born July 21, 1934. Mr. Kallay is an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Politically, he is a Republican. Charles Kallay. —A veteran of the World War, Mr. Kallay is numbered among the representative young business men of Lake County, and is secretary-treasurer of Kallay Bros. Company, nurserymen, with headquarters at Painesville. He was born in Hungary, March 20, 1896, the son of Sebastian and Rose (Martin) Kallay. Sebastian Kallay died in 1931. Both he and his wife were born in Hungary and spent their early lives there. They came to the United States many years ago and located in Lake County, where Mr. Kallay became a successful nurseryman. His widow still resides at Painesville. The children born to Mr. and Mrs. Kallay were : Paul, born in 1887; Steve, born in 1889; James, born in 1893; Charles, subject of this sketch; B. K., born in 1899; and Jennings, born in 1902. All are identified with Kallay Bros. Company, at Painesville, and their biographies may be found elsewhere in this history. Charles Kallay spent his boyhood in Hungary and was educated in the public schools. He came to the United States in 1907 and in that year became associated with his HISTORY OF NORTHEASTERN OHIO - 983 brothers in the nursery business at Painesville. The organization had been founded by B. K. Kallay, who is president of the company. In 1916 Charles Kallay enlisted in the U. S. Army and served on the Mexican border until March, 1917. He was sent to Camp Sheridan, Ala., on June 5, 1917, and on June 15th embarked for France. He participated in numerous engagements of the World War, including the Argonne, Verdun, Alsace-Lorraine, and St. Mihiel offensives, being seriously wounded during the Argonne drive. He subsequently attended the officers training school at Lyons, France, where he received a certificate of merit, and he received his discharge from the service at Camp Sherman, Ohio, April 22, 1919. He then resumed his business activities at Painesville as a nurseryman. The business of Kallay Bros. was incorporated in 1926. Mr. Kallay was married on Aug. 18, 1920, to Miss Theresa Bartish, daughter of Michael and Barbara (Morik) Bartish, natives of Hungary. They are residents of Fairport, Ohio. To Mr. and Mrs. Kallay were born three children: 1. Charles, Jr., born in June, 1921. 2. Marian, born Jan. 26, 1925. 3. Albert, born in 1928. Mr. Kallay is a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Stephen's Club, of Fairport, B. P. 0. Elks, veterans of Foreign Wars, and American Legion. He also holds membership in the Lake County, Ohio, and American Nurserymen's Associations. Don A. Wheeler, who is the capable superintendent of the Madison Home in Lake County, is a veteran of the World War. He was born in Medina County, Ohio, Sept. 7, 1890, the son of Frank H. and Myrtle (Gohman) Wheeler. Frank H. Wheeler is interested in the general insurance business and lives at Painesville. Both he and his wife are 984 - HISTORY OF NORTHEASTERN OHIO natives of Ohio. Their children are: 1. Don A., subject of this sketch. 2. Roy A., married Miss Esther Simon, lives at Seville, Ohio. They have two children, Phyllis and Adrienne. 3. Verne, lives at Painesville, and they have a daughter, Dorothy. 4. Dane, married Catherine Ferguson, lives at Madison, Ohio, where he is the owner of a basket factory. After his graduation from Madison High School in 1909, Don A. Wheeler studied law at Western Reserve University, Cleveland. He also took short courses in the study of agriculture at Ohio State University. In June, 1917, he enlisted in the Ohio National Guard as a member of Company M, 5th Ohio Infantry, and was sent to Camp Sheridan, Alabama, with the 37th Division. In June, 1918, the outfit sailed for France, and Mr. Wheeler served with the rank of captain. Following the close of the war he went to Germany with the Army of Occupation, and received his discharge in July, 1919. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre for valor by the French government. Shortly after his discharge from the service, Mr. Wheeler entered the Cleveland School of Chiropractic, from which he was graduated in 1924. He practiced that profession from 1925 until 1929 in Medina County and at Madison, and in the latter year received his present appointment as superintendent of the Madison Home for wives, widows, and dependent mothers of all wars. The Madison Home owns a 25 acre farm in Lake County and raises all produce used by the institution. A small dairy farm is also maintained. The home was built in 1891 by the National Women's Relief Corps and was given to the state of Ohio in 1904. It has since been under the management and supervision of the State, and is under the direction of the Department of Welfare. Mr. Wheeler has been successful in his management of the Home and is exceedingly popular. He has removed all restrictions placed on visiting hours at the home and thus has built up a more liveable HISTORY OF NORTHEASTERN OHIO - 985 program for the women at the home. At the present time there are 36 members, whose average age is 84 years. Mr. Wheeler was married to Miss Tessie Brintnell, daughter of Thomas and Ellen (Kelly) Brintnall, of Cleveland. They have two children: Arthur, born May 31, 1914, attends Denison University, class of 1935; and Martha, born Jan. 14, 1921, attends Madison High School, class of 1935. Mr. Wheeler is a member of the Congregational Church, at Madison, and belongs to the Kiwanis Club, past president. He also is affiliated with Jay Wilson Post No. 112, American Legion, Past Commander. Mr. Wheeler was one of the organizers of the Madison Glee Club 26 years ago and has served as its president. Jesse C. Behm. —As proprietor of the J. C. Behm Furniture Company, at Madison, Mr. Behm has long been identified with the business and civic interests of Lake County. He was born at Thompson, Geauga County, April 11, 1888, the son of Lewis and Alice (Keener) Behm. Lewis Behm, deceased, was a representative citizen of Geauga County, where he spent his entire life. He was a farmer and owned a well improved farm near Thompson. He and his wife had the following children: 1. Walter C. 2. Julia, died in infancy. 3. Milford, deceased. 4. Jesse C., subject of this sketch. 5. Delbert, lives at Monrovia, Calif. 6. Iva, married Louis Chaffee, lives at Thompson, Ohio. 7. Burton, lives at Denton, Mont. 8. Everett, lives at Painesville. 9. Zila, married William Hordusky, lives at Union City, Pa. Jesse C. Behm grew up on his father's farm in Geauga County and attended the district schools. He also was a student at Thompson High School and Grand River Institute, at Austinburg, Ohio. Mr. Behm followed general farming 986 - HISTORY OF NORTHEASTERN OHIO for six years, and during the past 35 years has been interested in the furniture business. Since 1920 he has owned his store at Madison, where he carries a complete line of house furnishings and high grade furniture. On March 3, 1909, Mr. Behm married Miss Allie Grover, daughter of Josiah J. and Mary M. (Prentice) Grover, the former a native of Green Valley, Ill., and the latter of Harpersfield, Ohio. They reside at Geneva, and Mr. Grover is a well known farmer. To Mr. and Mrs. Behm were born two sons: 1. Dellford, born Sept. 23, 1910. 2. Vincent, born in 1915, died in 1925. He is buried at Thompson. Mr. Behm and his family are members of Park Street Church of Christ, at Geneva, and he is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge and Independent Order of Odd Fellows. His wife belongs to the Order of Eastern Star. Politically, Mr. Behm is a Republican. Willard J. Daniels. —A member of one of the oldest and best known families of Lake County, Willard J. Daniels has a wide acquaintance at Willoughby, where he is identified with Daniels Bros. Coal Company. He is also a veteran of the World War. Mr. Daniels was born at Willoughby, July 8, 1898, the son of Frank Clarence and Alberta (Grover) Daniels. Frank Clarence Daniels was a prominent citizen of Lake County. He was born on the Daniels homestead and spent his entire life there. His birth was on July 22, 1849, and he died April 11, 1932. His widow resides at Mentor. She is the daughter of William 0. and Martha (Hubbard) Grover, natives of Portland, Me. Their marriage took place Feb. 12, 1890, and their children were: 1. Ethlyn, born Feb. 19, 1891, married Benjamin W. McKillen, lives at Willoughby, and they have three children: Marian, Benjamin, Jr., and Frances HISTORY OF NORTHEASTERN OHIO - 987 Elberta. 2. Milo G., born Feb. 28, 1902, lives at Mentor, where he is interested in the coal business. He married Miss Marian Nott, and they have three children: John Nott, Martha, and Phyllis. Frank Clarence Daniels was the son of John Adams and Jane Anne (Haggart) Daniels. John Adams Daniels was born Aug. 28, 1819, and died Jan. 27, 1899. Jane Anne (Haggart) Daniels was born June 12, 1825, and died Aug. 27, 1901. Their children were: 1. Frank Clarence, father of the subject of this sketch. 2. James Haggart, born Feb. 3, 1857, died in April, 1903. 3. Willie John, born May 26, 1856. 4. Anna J., born July 18, 1862. 5. Albert Sheridan, born Nov. 16, 1864. Albert Sheridan Daniels married on Aug. 27, 1890, Miss Lena Upham, who died in December, 1899. Their children were : 1. Gordon, born Aug. 1, 1892. 2. Harold U., born May 22, 1895. 3. Benjamin S., born July 2, 1899. Albert Sheridan Daniels died May 18, 1926. John Adams Daniels was the son of Aaron and Anna (Bassett) Daniels. Aaron Daniels was born Dec. 10, 1765, and died Dec. 28, 1841. His wife was born March 26, 1783, and died March 22, 1849. Willard J. Daniels, subject of this sketch, is a graduate of the Kirtland and Willoughby public schools, and was interested in truck gardening with his brother for a time. On April 26, 1917, he enlisted for service in the World War, and served as a member of Company M, 145th Infantry, being stationed first at Camp Sheridan and later at Camp Lee, Va. He received his discharge July 17, 1918. Until 1922 Mr. Daniels continued truck gardening and in that year he became associated with his brother in the coal business. Daniels. 988 - HISTORY OF NORTHEASTERN OHIO Mr. Daniels was married on Oct. 3, 1925, to Miss Emma Wright, of Xenia, Ohio, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Wright, both deceased. Mrs. Daniels was left an orphan and was reared and educated in the orphanage at Xenia. She also attended Berea College in Kentucky. Mr. and Mrs. Daniels have a son, Frank C., born July 24, 1928. Mr. Daniels is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and belongs to the Masonic Lodge, Knights of Pythias, American Legion, and "40 and 8" society. On Jan. 1, 1934, he was elected as a member of the Mentor Township Board of Education. He is a Republican and has served as precinct committeeman. Charles Christopher Huff. —A prominent figure in public affairs in Lake County is Charles C. Huff, who is secretary-treasurer of the Lake County Farm Bureau Cooperative Association, Inc. He was born at Baltic, Ohio, April 12, 1881, the son of Charles and Catherine (Miller) Huff. Charles Huff, who died in 1919, was a native of Ohio. Both he and his wife were born near Baltic. He is buried at Fresno, Coshocton County, and his widow resides with her children. Throughout his life Mr. Huff was a farmer and carpenter contractor. To Mr. and Mrs. Huff the following children were born: 1. William H., married Laura J. Boyd, lives at Canal Lewisville, Ohio. They have two children, William Boyd Huff, and Margaret (Huff) Radcliffe. 2. Dr. Adam L., married Laura Honabarger, lives at Fresno, and they have two children, Opal and Carl. 3. Charles C., the subject of this sketch. 4. Clayton H., unmarried, lives at Coshocton. He is a graduate of Ohio State University. Following his graduation from the public schools of Coshocton County, Charles C. Huff attended West Lafayette College, a United Presbyterian institution. He then taught HISTORY OF NORTHEASTERN OHIO - 989 in the rural schools for three years, and later took a business course at Oberlin Business College. In February, 1907, Mr. Huff became assistant manager of the Van Cleve Estate at Mentor, and in September of the same year he resigned to assume the duties of manager of the Parmelee Farm, at Painesville. He served in that capacity for 27 years, and resigned Sept. 1, 1933, to become secretary-treasurer of the Lake County Farm Bureau Cooperative Association, Inc. While manager of Parmelee Farm, Mr. Huff was in charge of the complete remodeling of buildings on the estate. He was chosen as one of 66 Master Farmers of Ohio in 1930; member of the "400 Bushel Potato Club" in 1931, with an acre record of 435 bushels; and in 1932 was a member of the "40 Bushel Wheat Club", with a 481/2 bushel yield average on 14 acres. The Lake County Farm Bureau Cooperative Association, Inc., is similar to thirty other cooperative organizations throughout Ohio. It already has 250 share-holder members, and until June 16, 1934, had completed $20,000 worth of business in that year. All net profits are distributed to share-holders by patronage dividend. The Association handles seeds, feeds, fertilizers, spray materials, paints, fencing, coal, and building material, and are agents for casualty automobile insurance and fire and tornado insurance on farm buildings. Lake and Geauga counties have also organized the L. & G. Farm Bureau Cooperative Association, and they handle farm bureau petroleum products. A bulk plant and filling station is located at Chardon and operates five delivery trucks. On June 19, 1907, Mr. Huff was united in marriage with Miss Mabel Leavengood, of Fresno, Ohio, daughter of William H. and Elizabeth (Miller) Leavengood. They are residents of Fresno. To Mr. and Mrs. Huff were born three children: 1. Helen E., born June 29, 1908, employed in the 990 - HISTORY OF NORTHEASTERN OHIO offices of the Painesville Telegraph. 2. Edith K., born Sept. 19, 1910, married Roy Meredith. She is secretary for the law firm of Tuttle and Hubbard. They live at Painesvilleon-the-Lake. 3. Robert, born March 29, 1926. Mr. Huff is a Republican, and in 1934 was a candidate for Representative to the General Assembly. He was a member of the Lake County Fair Board for five years, Painesville Township Board of Education three years, and Lake County Y. M. C. A. He is also a member of the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Painesville, being trustee and member of the official board, as well as Sunday School superintendent for ten years. Mr. Huff is a director of the Educational Supply Company, vice president of the Midland Realty Company, and director of the Painesville Elevator Company. Lyle F. Daniels. —Associated with the Daniels Bros. Coal Company, at Willoughby, Mr. Daniels is numbered among the substantial and well known business men of Lake County. He was born at Mentor, April 13, 1893, the son of Frank C. and Alberta (Grover) Daniels. Frank C. Daniels was a well known farmer of Lake County, and was born in the Daniels homestead near Willoughby, where he spent his entire life. His widow resides there. Mr. Daniels is deceased and is buried at Willoughby. To Mr. and Mrs. Daniels were born the following children: 1. Ethlyn, married Benjamin W. McKillen, lives at Willoughby, and they have three children: Marian, Benjamin, Jr., and Frances Elberta. 2. Lyle F., subject of this sketch. 3. Willard J., a sketch of whom appears elsewhere in this history. 4. Milo G., lives at Mentor, where he is interested in the coal business. He married Miss Marian Nott, and they have three children: John Nott, Martha, and Phyllis. HISTORY OF NORTHEASTERN OHIO - 991 After his graduation from Willoughby High School in 1913, Lyle F. Daniels became interested in truck gardening with his brother, Willard Daniels. Since 1918 he has conducted a coal business and also handles builders' supplies, lumber and paint, his place of business being located one mile east of Willoughby, just off Route 20. Daniels Bros. Coal Company have a well established trade and employ eight men. The firm operates six motor trucks and has six coal silos, each of 250 ton capacity, as well as 4,000 ton open storage capacity. They do bituminous road contracting. On June 2, 1917, Mr. Daniels was united in marriage with Miss Clara Dennis, daughter of Charles A. and Cynthia Dennis. Their children are: 1. Martha Elizabeth, born March 27, 1918. 2. William E., born June 2, 1920. 3. Lyle, Jr., born Nov. 25, 1923. 4. Charles Dennis, born Nov. 30, 1924. 5. Beverly Marguerite, born Dec. 18, 1927. 6. Sally Lou, born May 11, 1930. Mr. Daniels and his family are prominent members of the Methodist Church, and he is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge, Knights of Pythias, Kiwanis Club, Chamber of Commerce, and Board of Trade. He is a Democrat in politics and in 1934 was candidate for Representative from this district of Ohio. Cecil B. Todd. —One of Lake County's most influential citizens is Cecil B. Todd, popular and well liked mayor of Willoughby. He was born here, Dec. 7, 1887, the son of James H. and Amy (Booth) Todd. James H. Todd, deceased, was a native of Canada. His wife was born in Newark, England. She resides in Cleveland. Mr. Todd is buried at Willoughby. For more than 60 years he was a resident of Willoughby. He was a skilled moulder. To Mr. and Mrs. Todd were born the following children. 992 - HISTORY OF NORTHEASTERN OHIO 1. Albert. 2. Percy, who died in 1904 at the age of 21 years. 3. Cecil B., subject of this sketch. 4. Amy, unmarried, lives in Cleveland, where she has a millinery business. Following his graduation from Willoughby High School in 1907, Cecil B. Todd attended Cleveland College, where he specialized in the study of commercial law, accounting, and real estate law. He was employed as a machinist by the old American Clay Machine Company, later the Hadfield-Penfield Company, and he subsequently became their draftsman. During 1909-15 he was identified with the engineering department of the New York Central Railroad as a draftsman, and his next position was in the same capacity with Mills, Rhines, Bellman, & Nordhoff, of Toledo, Ohio, developers and builders of the Willys-Overland motor plant. Mr. Todd returned to Willoughby in 1917 as a mechanical draftsman with the old Ben Hur Motor Company, and in the following year went with the Cleveland Crane & Engineering Company, at Wickliffe, where he continued as a draftsman until 1921. In that year he became identified with the newly organized First National Bank of Willoughby as a teller. He served in that capacity until 1924, and then became assistant cashier. When the institution was merged with the Cleveland Trust Company late in 1931, Mr. Todd became interested in the general insurance business at Willoughby. On Aug. 5, 1913, Mr. Todd was united in marriage with Miss Laura Ryan, daughter of Lawrence E. and Mary (Dunlap) Ryan. Both are deceased and are buried at Willoughby. Mr. Ryan spent 28 years as chief of the Willoughby Fire Department. Mr. and Mrs. Todd have a daughter, Laura Jane, born Feb. 20, 1924. Mr. Todd is a prominent member of Grace Episcopal Church, being junior warden, and he is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge, Master in 1924 and again in 1932. He was chairman of the park board and was instrumental in starting HISTORY OF NORTHEASTERN OHIO - 993 the landscaping of the public park and the churches, library and schools around the park. Mr. Todd was president of the Chamber of Commerce, organizing the Better Business Board, and also started the credit association. Mr. Todd was elected to the office of mayor of Willoughby in November, 1933, by the largest majority ever accorded any aspirant to that office in the city. He has reduced the bonded indebtedness of the village to the amount of $60,000. He has also cooperated with the county, state, and federal government in the project of resurfacing Route No. 20 through the village, and this was accomplished with no cost to the city itself. H. Ward Knowles, who is a dealer for the Graham, Chrysler and Plymouth automobiles at Willoughby, is recognized as one of the progressive and successful business men of the community. He was born at Bradford, Pa., Jan. 8, 1885, the son of William Luther and Maude E. (Ward) Knowles. William Luther Knowles lives at Fostoria, Ohio, where he is the proprietor of a machine shop. Mr. and Mrs. Knowles have two children: H. Ward, subject of this sketch, and Esther, married Fred Stephenson, lives at Cleveland. H. Ward Knowles attended the public schools of Hatton and West Milgrove, Ohio. He was employed in the oil fields for a time near Fostoria, and later operated a tile yard at Hatton in partnership with his father for ten years. In 1909 Mr. Knowles entered the employ of the Hocking Valley Railroad, with whom he spent seven years. He resigned as chief clerk and spent the following three years as a bookkeeper with the Fostoria Creamery Company. Later, he was identified with the machine shops of the National Supply Company at Toledo, Ohio, and General Motors at Pontiac, 994 - HISTORY OF NORTHEASTERN OHIO Mich. A company sent him to the Gisholt Machine Company School, and he then was sent to Pontiac with the General Motors Corporation as a truck builder. He remained there until the plant was closed in 1921, and in that year Mr. Knowles located at Royal Oak, Mich., as a real estate agent and stock broker. During the World War Mr. Knowles was employed in the shops of the American Car & Foundry Company, at Detroit, Mich., where he was employed in making shells. Mr. Knowles spent three years at Royal Oak, Mich., and then located for one year in Toledo, as a real estate dealer. He spent six months subsequently as a sales representative of the Thor Washing Machine Company, and in 1926 came with the Lake County Electric Company, at Painesville, with whom he spent two years. In 1928 Mr. Knowles became local representative at Willoughby for the Graham Motor Car Company. He also took over the Chrysler and Plymouth agencies in 1931. He handles sales exclusively. Mr. Knowles was married on Nov. 22, 1922, to Miss Selma Kreft, daughter of Otto and Martha Kreft. The former is a resident of Toledo, and the latter is deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Knowles have an adopted daughter, Marian Marshall, born Feb. 16, 1919. She attends Willoughby High School. Mr. Knowles is a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, and is affiliated with Fostoria Lodge No. 288 F. & A. M. He also belongs to the Kiwanis Club. John Guraly, who is president of the village council at Fairport Harbor, is numbered among the substantial citizens of Lake County. He was born in Hungary, Oct. 9, 1896, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Beres) Guraly. Joseph Guraly has been in the employ of the P. & L. E. Company since 1896. He and his wife live at Fairport. Their HISTORY OF NORTHEASTERN OHIO - 995 children are : 1. Joseph, married Anna Rindo, lives at Fairport, and they have the following children: Joseph, Matilda, Margaret, Betty Ann, and Julius. 2. John, subject of this sketch. 3. Steve, died in 1929, was a member of the senior class of Miami University. Following his graduation from the public schools of Fairport Harbor, John Guraly spent seven years in the employ of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. In 1912 he entered the shops of the Diamond Alkali. Ile has spent several years as a moving and transfer contractor between Cleveland and Fairport, and during 1923-29 was connected with E. A. Freshwater, as a sub-contractor. Since the latter year Mr. Guraly has been employed by the Diamond Alkali Corporation. He has also been interested in the restaurant business at Fairport since May, 1933. On Oct. 12, 1915, Mr. Guraly was united in marriage with Miss Anna Bodnar, a native of Hungary, daughter of Michael and Mary (Kish) Bodnar. The former is deceased and the latter resides at Fairport. To Mr. and Mrs. Guraly have been born three daughters: 1. Anna, born July 23, 1916. 2. Elizabeth, who died at the age of four years. 3. Helen, born April 25, 1922. Mr. Guraly is a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, and belongs to the Hungarian Citizens Civic Club, and St. Stephen's Society. He has always been a Democrat, and is a member of the Democratic Central Committee, as well as president of the Fairport council. William F. Wright, who is proprietor of a machine shop at Willoughby, is numbered among the enterprising and dependable business men of Lake County. He was born at Cleveland, Ohio, April 24, 1886, the son of John and Mary (Bell) Wright. 996 - HISTORY OF NORTHEASTERN OHIO John Wright was born in Bavaria and his wife is a native of Switzerland. He was a carpenter by trade and is now deceased. His widow resides in Cleveland. Their children were: 1. William F., subject of this sketch. 2. Jennie, the widow of Carl Seith, lives at Willoughby. 3. Ernest, lives at Willoughby. He married Miss Hattie Reeder. 4. Louis. 5. Pauline, married Earl Kinford, lives at Cleveland. The boyhood of William F. Wright was spent at Cleveland, where he attended the public schools. When 11 years of age, he left school and went to work for the Standard Tool Company, at a salary of $2.50 per week. He was in their employ for seven years; spent three years as a machinist with the Cleveland Metal Products Company; one and one-half years with the Long-Arms System Company, a government shop engaged in making water proof doors for battleships; the National Screw & Manufacturing Company for five years as a machinist; the Sabin Machine Company for 12 years, where he was in charge of the tool room and die work; the Economy Engineering Company for one year, Willoughby; also the American Clay Machinery Company; and spent two years in Texas, where he was interested in oil drilling. In 1928 Mr. Wright organized his own business at Willoughby. His shop is in the former C. P. & E. foundry building in the rear of the Terminals building. He does all types of blacksmith and forging work, and grinds approximately 400 lawn mowers annually. His specialty is wrought iron work and he makes many articles in this line from small hand made hinges to large ornamental gates and trellises. Mr. Wright married Miss Jean Neil, and they have two sons: 1. Walton Wright, married and has three sons and a daughter. He lives at Cleveland. 2. Wilbur, unmarried. He lives at Cleveland. Mr. Wright is independent in politics. He is a member of the Baptist Church, and belongs to the Kiwanis Club. HISTORY OF NORTHEASTERN OHIO - 997 His chief hobbies are stamp collecting and gardening, and he has a beautiful rock garden at his home. His home was built entirely by him and is located in Pleasant Valley. John O. Rendrick. —One of the substantial and widely known citizens of Lake County is John 0. Rendrick, who is mayor of Fairport. He was born here July 2, 1896, the son of John and Sophia Rendrick. John Rendrick is a native of Finland. He came to the United States in 1885 and settled at Fairport, where he was employed for half a century as a dockman. He is now retired. His wife is deceased and is buried at Painesville. Their children were: 1. Mathew, lives at Ashtabula. 2. Jack, lives in New York City. 3. John 0., the subject of this sketch. 4. Edward, lives at Fairport. 5. Olga, lives at Cleveland. 6. Bertha, lives at Cleveland. John O. Rendrick is a graduate of the public schools of Fairport and Painesville. He began his business career with the Stern's Dry Goods Company at Fairport, with whom he remained for five years. He later spent four years in the electrical department of the Diamond Alkali Corporation, and in 1929 assumed his present duties as manager of the Lake County Gas Company's office at Fairport. On April 4, 1920, Mr. Rendrick married Miss Alice M. Bailey, of Fairport, daughter of Arthur and Mary Bailey. The former is deceased and the latter resides at Fairport. Mr. and Mrs. Rendrick have a son, Robert, born Feb. 13, 1924. Mr. Rendrick was elected mayor of Fairport in 1931 and reelected in 1933. He has taken a prominent part in the development of a new municipal water works, which doubles the present capacity, and pumps water from the lake to a 250,000 gallon stand pipe. This is successfully being carried 998 - HISTORY OF NORTHEASTERN OHIO forward by a loan of $120,000 from the government under the Public Works Administration, $40,000 of which is a grant to the city. Mr. Rendrick's administration was the first to finance a street lighting system, and the city still maintains a volunteer fire department, as well as a city police department. Mr. Rendrick is especially interested in the St. Lawrence-Great Lakes Deep Waterway project and has attended meetings in Canada and Milwaukee in furtherance of his interest in it. The city of Fairport has a population of 5,000. Mr. Rendrick is a member of the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church and is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge, Knights of Pythias, and International Finnish Lodge. He is also a member of the Fairport Mens Civic Club. Rev. Gabriel Lipsanen. —Outstanding among the influential citizens of Lake County is Reverend Lipsanen, who is pastor of the Suomi Church, at Fairport Harbor. He was born at Juva, Finland, Sept. 29, 1872, the son of Hendrik and Aleksandra (Bagge) Lipsanen. The Lipsanen family engaged in general farming in Finland for many generations. The children born to Hendrik and Aleksandra (Bagge) Lipsanen were, as follows: 1. Rev. Gabriel, subject of this sketch. 2. Antti, deceased. 3. Maria, lives in Finland. 4. Emma, lives in Finland. 5. Jacob, lives at Fairport. 6. Hilda, lives in New York City. After receiving his early education in the schools of Juva, Finland, Gabriel Lipsanen attended high school at Mikkeli, Finland. He is a graduate of the University of Helsingfors, class of 1903. He then came to the United States where he was ordained to the ministry and became a minister of the Suomi Synod, Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church, with headquarters at Hancock, Mich. For many HISTORY OF NORTHEASTERN OHIO - 999 years Reverend Lipsanen had charges in New England, being the only minister of his church in that State at the time. He had charges at Boston, Mass., Quincy, Peabody and Cape Ann and later took charge at Maynard, Mass. He received his present appointment as pastor of Suomi Church, at Fairport, in 1913. Reverend Lipsanen is past member of the consistory of the Suomi Synod, former director of Suomi College, chairman of the Mission Board of the Suomi Synod, chairman of the Ohio-Pennsylvania Conference of the Suomi Synod, chairman of the eastern conference, and past chairman for several years of the Young People's League of the Ohio-Pennsylvania Conference. On Aug. 31, 1910, Reverend Lipsanen was united in marriage with Miss Alma Elina Hinkkanen, daughter of Johan Victor and Elina (Naskali) Hinkkanen, natives of Finland. The former is deceased and the latter still resides in Finland. Mr. Hinkkanen was a general merchant. Their children were : 1. John, was an editor of a weekly newspaper known as the "Valboja", was also a publisher of "Magazine Home", the former was conducted at Calumet, Mich., and Duluth, Minn. He died in Finland in 1927. He also lived in Fairport Harbor, where he started the paper "Amerikan Sanomat" and was also in the real estate business here. 2. Alma E. Lipsanen. 3. Kalle, who is superintendent for the State Fishing Station, and editor of a Finnish fishing magazine in Finland. 4. Impi, lives in Finland. 5. Toivo, a teacher, lives in Finland. 6. Linda, lives in Finland. Alma Elina (Hinkkanen) Lipsanen was born at Saaksmaki, Finland, Sept. 16, 1884. She was educated there and graduated from the high school for girls at Hameenlinna. Following her graduation from Sortavala Seminary, Mrs. Lipsanen attended the University of Helsingfors for one year, and specialized in the study of public speaking, and was public speaker in Finland for two years.
