His maternal great grand-father, David Peter, located in Gnadenhutten in 1797 and was the pioneer merchant of Eastern Ohio ; his account books still preserved show he traded chiefly with the Indians of the surrounding country ; he came as a representative of the Moravian Society which undertook to Christianize the Delaware Indians of the Tuscarawas Valley. Married to Emma B. Parks (daughter of Joseph Parks, a pioneer settler in Cuyahoga County), October 6, 1900; five children (four sons and one daughter). Educated in the common and high schools of Gnadenhutten ; attended Oberlin College, 18901894 ; received A.
