3. Jonas POTTS was born in 1726 in Virginia. He died on Aug 15 1769. Thomas Maxwell Potts, 1901 - The Potts Family in Great Britain and American Page 295

Jonas Potts (David), son of David and Elizabeth (Lane) Potts, was born about 1726, probably in Pennsylvania, and removed with his parents to Virginia. To distinguish him from his uncle Jonas Potts, who lived in the same neighborhood, he was sometimes called Jonas Potts, Junior, and at others, Jonas Potts, Farmer.

On 10 mo, 31, 1748, he was received into the membership of Friends, by Fairfax Monthly Meeting. On 2 mo. 29, 1752, he applied to the Monthly Meeting for a certificate of clearness, in order that he might proceed in marriage with Maryh Stroud, a member of Hopewell Monthly Meeting, which was in due time granted and the marriage regularly consumated.

His father seems to have sttled him upon a farm of 150 acres, and givenhim a one half interest in the grist mill. In 1761 he purchased 122 acres on the north fork of Kittockton from his uncle Jonas Potts, and in 1763 he sold 50 acres, part of this tract, to Thomas Bryant. In 1764, he purchased from Thomas Wilson and Margaret, his wife, 260 acres on the south fork of Kittockton.

He died August 15, 1769, at the age of forty two years, and was buried in the Potts graveyard. His tombstone bears the earliest inscripton in the yard. The monument is a rough Blue Ridge stone, and the lettering is somewhat crudely and quaintly cut. A copy of the inscripton is given below. The first line is curved upward in the form of an arc of a circle. Immediately below this curved line, are cut three inverted hearts, in positions indicated by the three asterisks.

His will bears date of July 31, 1768, and was filed and proven September 12, following. He mentions, "my father David Potts, late deceased," and appoints "my two brothers-in-law, John Vestal and Samuel Person, (Pearson), both of Frederick County," as his executors. He mentions his wife and each of his children by nename, and makes provision for them in the distribution of his estate. John Vestal took out letters of testamentary, with Isreal Thompson and Francis Hague as bondsmen in the sum of L 1000. The inventory of his personality covers four folio pages.

He was married to Mary STROUD in 1752 in Fairfax Monthly Meeting. Jonas POTTS and Mary STROUD had the following children:

5 i. David POTTS3. In 1776, he joined a military Company and was disowned by Friends. No further account.

Eulogy by David Martin

Clay Campbell was my Grandfather ....

All the memories of him are bright warm places.

Grandpa was a Christian. I know this not only by his words, but also by his walk. I never heard him sing; but his life was music for the Master. I never heard him preach a sermon; as a child and teen I watched him live one. I did hear him pray. I remember his prayers in church on Sunday morning. Something in his voice told me he was talking to an old friend.

He was strong yet very gentle. His big hands could do a man's work, yet lightly tousle a boy's hair.

He was kind. He was quiet ... A man of principle and conviction. He did what he could.

Of the many boyhood experiences, I remember this one as indicative of the man he was to me. It's strange what comes to mind.

When I was eight, my family left Illinois for California. We had a little beagle hound named "Specks". We couldn't take the dog, so Grandpa and Grandma gave him a home on the farm. I still think of that dog though he's been dead many years. He was my first. When we'd come back to Illinois, or call the farm, we'd ask Grandpa about Specks.

I really don't know how good a rabbit dog Specks was, but according to Grandpa, he was the best! The pain of separation was eased as Grandpa told how he and Specks would hunt rabbits. The dog I thought of as a pet became useful and somhow better in my eyes. We three Martin boys always thought of Specks as our dog, and Grandpa always talked about him in that way to us. He had a way of making you feel important.

I have two children who only met their Great-Grandpa once as I recall. Before I left this week to come here I sat down with them and told them what they had missed by not knowing Grandpa. And as I told them about him I thanked God for all I had when He gave me Momma's daddy for a Grandfather.

I know more about kindness; I know more about faithfulness; I know more about love; because I knew him.

My journey on earth was eased by his life. My destination is dearer in his death. Heaven's gold shines brighter, its' beauty is more real, its' reunion sweeter because he is there.

I know he was just a man, with mistakes, shortcomings, faults. I just can't remember any of them right now. I know I looked at him with the eyes all grandsons see grandpa's with. But taken as a whole I believe his life was a fit pattern sons and grandsons alike would do well to follow. His strength, honesty, kindness, love, humility and faith in God stand as hallmarks to us all.

The effect of his life cannot be measured by the brief words we say today. It cannot be fathomed by the things we see today. Only enternity is large enough to show the good this man did for all of us who call him husband, father, and grandpa.
