Descendants of John POTTS - Aug 5 1998
COMPILED BY RALPH AND JOYCE FRANKE
FIRST GENERATION
All the above was written by John POTTS' grandson, Dr. George Jerald POTTS.
Again, quoting the book: Dr. POTTS states that two brothers of his grandfather, John POTTS, served in the army under Gen. Washington and that eventually one or both settled at or about Philadelphia, PA.
He was married to Janet TOUGH in , , , England?. Janet TOUGH was christened on Aug 11 1754 in St. Nicholas, Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Scotland. She was born in , , Aberdeen, Scotland. She has reference number 41. From THE POTTS FAMILY, by Thomas Maxwell POTTS, 1901.
While still in the Army, John POTTS married Miss Jeanette TOUGHT or TOUT (Joyce FRANKE's note: probably TOUGH), the daughter of a Presbyterian minister of Dundee or Aberdeen, Scotland.
All the above was written by John POTTS' grandson, Dr. George Jerald POTTS.
10 Aug 1993, Joyce FRANKE checked the IGI for Scotland. Aberdeen had lots of people named TOUGH, while Dundee had none. Therefore, I have changed her place of birth to Aberdeen.
The Scottish Church Records show this Janet TOUGH, daughter of Alexander TOUGH and Christian Matthewson, christened at St. Nicholas' Church. The time is right, and the Scottish naming pattern is right, so I have assigned this information to my Janet.
John POTTS and Janet TOUGH had the following children:
+2 i. William POTTS.

The 1871 Ontario, Canada, census index, found by Joyce Franke on the Internet in April 1996, gives her age as 91, born Ireland. She would have been a 'stray', probably living with William WATT. THE POTTS FAMILY, by Thomas Maxwell POTTS, 1901, pages 645-654. Rev. Alexander POTTS, son of Alexander and Jane (LOVAT) POTTS, was born at Mohr, County Cavan, Ireland. He taught school and studied for the ministry. He became dissatisfied with the unfortunate conditions existing in Ireland, with famine prevailing, and agrarian outrages, frequently accompanied with murder and assassination. He left Ireland, accompanied by his two youngest sisters, Marianne and Eliza Jane and came to Canada. Their letters home and the mother's desire to be near her children, induced the father to remove with his family to Canada. Alexander POTTS took holy order, in Canada, and after serving as curate and missionary, was appointed to the Parishes of Delaware and Lambeth adjoining in the Diocese of Huron, where through his labors a beautiful Brick Church was erected about six miles from London, Ontario. It is alleged that his constant labor and zeal, in connection with the erection of this Church, brought on some trouble with his liver, which eventually caused his death in 1865. He was buried within the Church grounds, at the urgent wishes of his congregation, who erected a handsome monument to his memory. He married Miss Elizabeth COURTNEY, who still survives (written in 1901). They had one child, a son, who died at the age of twenty seven years.
Elizabeth COURTNEY died after 1901. !General Synod Archives of the Anglican Church of Canada. Christ Church, Delaware, Ontario, 1834 to 1984. Shows birth and death dates.

Page 649. William Lovat POTTS, son of Alexander and Jane (LOVAT) POTTS, was born at Mohr, County Cavan, Ireland. He received a fair education, but his taste inclining to farming, his father sent him at the age of 19 years, to the care of Adam LUCAS, an old friend, and a planter in the West Indies. He remained in the West Indies until the rest of the family removed to Canada, when he followed them, and engaged in farming with great success. He married Ann Jane ELLIOTT, daughter of John and Christiana (POTTS) ELLIOTT, a first cousin, by whom he had three children, one son and two daughters. !He retired from farming, entered into mercantile pursuits and failed. He removed with his family to Rochester, New York, where his wife, his son and younger daughter died. He afterward entered the employ of the Pennsylvania Rail Road and removed to Philadelphia, where he died in 1884. His eldest daughter married Mr. ---- Vanever and resides at Omaha, Nebraska. !From the records of the orphanage in Rochester, NY, where his son and younger daughter were placed, I (Joyce FRANKE) learned that he had deserted his wife and children, probably abt 1863. His older daughter, Jane Charlotte POTTS, at about age 12, was probably too old for the orphanage, and was placed with a dressmaker, Miss Margaret FINLEY. Jane (Jenny) and Margaret (Maggie) lived together the rest of Maggie's life, and are buried in the same cemetery in Omaha. Maggie FINLEY took a little boy, Henry Charles VAN EVERY, into her home, and he and Jane married abt 1888. !Ontario Census, 1861, shows the family in Emily Township, Peterborough County, Ontario, Canada. Her mother placed her in the orphanage and was paying board for both of the children. In 1864 she and her brother were both taken by the poormaster. Did the mother die then, and, with the board not being paid the poormaster took them? Joyce (VAN AVERY) FRANKE has not been able to find death records on any of them. His wife Mary Ann, age 39, born Ireland is shown, as are their children, Letty, age 14; Anna E., age 12; William W., age 9; Alexander, age 6; George W., age 2; and Jane SHAW, age 24, servant. Apparently all listed after Letty, born Ontario, are also born Ontario.
He was induced to accept the position of Surgeon to her Britannic Majesty's Consul at Bankok, Siam, with greatly increased pay and emoluments. At the end of eleven months, the mutiny occurred in India, and he, with twelve other Consular Surgeons, were ordered to Calcutta. On arriving at Calcutta, they were organized into an Auxiliary Medical Staff Corps, of which Dr. POTTS was appointed the Chief Medical Officer or Superintendent. After the mutiny had been quelled, the Corps were ordered to China where the Anglo-French War against the Chinese was about to begin active operations. At the close of the Chinese War, Dr. POTTS resigned his position at Hong Kong, and returned to America, arriving in New York early in 1861, and was there when Abraham Lincoln passed through the city on his way to Washington to be inaugurated. The following year, Dr. POTTS applied to Surgeon General HAMMOND, U.S.A., for an appointment as a Surgeon in the U.S. service. He was ordered to report to the Army Medical Board at Boston for examination, and later recommended to the President for appointment. He was sworn in on March 12. He served under General GRANT, in the Army of the Potomac, and was afterward sent to Texas, where he continued until October, 1865. After leaving the U.S. service, he returned to Belleville, Ontario, where he practiced Medicine and Surgery for three years, when he settled at Toronto, where he continued until 1898, and since that time he has resided at Victoria, British Columbia.
Dr. POTTS married Miss Agnes STEWART in 1868. She is a lineal descendant of 'Annie Laurie' of poetic story, and whose family name was FERGUSON of Craig-Darig, Scotland. Their youngest daughter, Jessie, is said to resemble her famous ancestor in features and general appearance. 1871 Canadian census, shows Geo. Jerrold POTTS, age 36 married, born Ireland, Church of England, MD (occupation). His wife Agnes is 27, born Ontario. Their children are shown as Helen age 2 and George A. age 1. With them are Barbara STEWART age 19, servant, and Margaret JOHNSTON, age 59, born Scotland, servant. My copy of this does not show where Helen, George A. and Barbara STEWART were born, but Agnes was born Ontario, and I expect these shown below her also were. Family information from their granddaughter, Mary CLARKE. Marriage date of Agnes STEWART and George J. POTTS in the Hastings County Marriage Register, 1858-69. Says he was of Belleville, born Ireland.
In the 3 July 1863 issue of the Warder, newspaper of Omemee, Emily Twp, near Peterborough, ON, on the front page was a business card for Dr. Geo. Potts. A note in the article from the Lilies and Shamrocks book, by Howard Remmett, page 143, states that Dr. Geo. Potts was also a coroner there.
He was married to Agnes STEWART on Nov 27 1867 in , Hastings, Ontario, Canada. Agnes STEWART was born in 1843 in Stirling, Canada. She died in 1911 in Portland, Washington, Oregon. FOURTH GENERATION
In 1996, among her mother's things, Joyce Van Avery Franke found clippings, including an obituary for Mrs. Jennie C. Van Avery. It follows: Mrs. Jennie C. Van Avery, 71, died Sunday at her home, 2605 Hickory St. She was a resident of Omaha 44 years. Surviving are her husband, Henry, and a son, James. Funeral services will be held at Cole mortuary Wednesday at 2:30 p. m. Burial will be in West Lawn cemetery. A handwritten note says this was Sunday, Sept. 11, 1932. She was married to Henry Charles VAN AVERY (son of H. C. VAN AVERY and Margaret JOHNSON) on Dec 2 1888 in Omaha, Douglas, NE. Henry Charles VAN AVERY was born on May 16 1870 in Dundas, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada. He died on Jul 20 1934 in Omaha, Douglas, NE. He was christened in Rochester, Monroe, NY. He was buried in West Lawn Cem, Omaha, Douglas, NE. He has reference number 4. My mother's information says that he was born in Dundas, Ontario, on 16 May 1869, or in New York State in 1866. My mother's letter to Ruth Lupo 1964 says that a genealogist found that he was baptized in Rochester, NY. Death certificate, has hearsay information on birth. 1880 US Census shows him as 10 years old, Canadian birth, last name VARRAY. Mary Ann LITTLE found him in the 1900 census, birth date given as May 1869, name shown as VAN AVERY. His foster mother is shown as his mother-in-law, which is not correct! As a matter of fact, she was never married, never had children, but took 4 children in as foster children. She did adopt one, Gertrude, because (according to Gertrude) she was illegitimate, and needed a legal name. Two, being legitimate, did not need legal names. I do not know details about the other one, Nellie Roth, found in the 1875 census. In the 1880 Federal census for NY, Vol. 44, E.D. 98, Sheet 40, line 1, he and his wife are shown with their foster mother, Maggie FINLEY, age 47, born Canada, Jennie is shown as age 22, born Canada, and Henry Charles VAN EVERY, is shown as age 10, born in Canada. Both her name and Henry's are garbled. Her name, Jennie, is shown as Jemive, and his surname is shown as VARRAY. She gave her age as 22, when she actually was 27. The dwelling is number 2, Orange St. (Jay is crossed out), Monroe Co., Rochester.
On the death of Osie (DANIELS) VAN AVERY, her daughter, Joyce (VAN AVERY) FRANKE, found the certificate of their marriage. They were married by Pastor T. M. HOUSE, of the First M. E. Church. Family legend has it that both Henry and Jane were orphaned and placed in an orphanage in Rochester, NY, from which they were taken as chldren by the foster mother, Margaret (Maggie) FINLEY. I have been unable to find the orphanage that he was taken from. Jennie was not placed in an orphanage, although her younger brother and sister were, after their father deserted the family. Their mother, Annie, paid their board, according to the orphanage records at the Rush Rheese (sp?) library. On the same day in 1865, the two children were taken from the orphanage by the poormaster, probably because the mother had died. The POTTS book, 1901, states that the father left Rochester after the mother and two younger children died. I have been unable to find death or burial record on these three, or further records of any kind. 1897 Omaha City Directory shows Henry C. VAN AVERY, notions 104 N 10th Str. r. (r for residence) 1710 S. 26th St. 1900 census, NE, shows Henry C. VAN AVERY, white, b May 1869, age 31, born Canada (Eng); citizenship NA (naturalized); city, Omaha, street, Capitol Ave.; house no., 1009; Other members of the family are also shown: wife Jennie C. b July 1868, age 31 b Canada, naturalized; son, James H. (later changed to James Charles); daughter, Margarett; Margarett Finley, ML (mother in law), b July 1828, age 71, b Canada (Eng) also naturalized.
Joyce FRANKE has checked the naturalization papers for Nebraska and does not find any of this family naturalized. Perhaps in another area, Illinois or Rochester?
In 1996, Joyce Van Avery Franke found clippings among her mother's things. One of them was an obituary of Henry C. Van Avery, and included the following: Henry C. Van Avery, 70, father of James C. Van Avery, sporting goods dealer, died Friday in a local hospital of a heart attack hastened by the heat. He lived in a downtown hotel. He was a resident of Omaha since 1888 and served as deputy tax assessor 20 years, and was a paving inspector at one time. Recently he operated an ice business at 19th and Cass Sts. He was born in Canada and lived in Rochester, NY, and Chicago before coming to Omaha. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a. m. at N. P. Swanson mortuary with the Rev. D. J. Gallagher officiating.
Notes of James Charles Van Avery, after a trip to Rochester in 1948: Henry was confirmed the first Sunday after Easter, May 2, 1886 in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Rochester, NY. Henry was age 16 at confirmation. Presented by Dr. Henry Anstice, confirmed by Bishop Cox. First Communion in 1886. No record of baptism. A newspaper article, 8 July 1881, shows that a 12 year old boy has been missing from his home, No. 7 Fitzhugh St. since last Wed. His mother seems to hold the opinion that he went away on a canal boat. 1881 Rochester City Directory shows Margaret Finley and Jennie C. Potts living at #7 Fitzhugh St. Page 57 of the 1875 census (June 1875) made by Wm. E. Lathrop, Margaret Finley, age 42, F, (born) Canada, housekeeper; Jennie C. Potts, 18, niece dressmaker; Nellie Roth, 4, Livingston. Jane Charlotte Jennie POTTS and Henry Charles VAN AVERY had the following children:
96 i. Finley Alexander VAN EVERY was born in 1889 in Omaha, Douglas, NE. He died on Apr 13 1891 in Omaha, Douglas, NE. He was buried on Apr 14 1891 in Forest Lawn Cem, Omaha, Douglas, NE. Death date in Omaha City Directory shows Findlay Van Every. 996, Joyce Van Avery Franke has found a death memorial in her mother's things, which gives his death date, and shows his name as F. A. Van Avery, died April 13, 181. Other information in her files shows his middle name is Alexander. Information from Martin Beerman, gives death date and burial date. Says the family home then was at 1002 Capitol Avenue. Finley died of diptheria and croup. At the cemetery he is indexed as Findley, Van Avery. No stone marks the grave. It's in a very old section of the cemetery.
97 ii. Laura M. VAN AVERY was born on Jun 28 1890 in Chicago, Cook, IL. She died before 1900. 'Aunt' Gertrude BEUTEL told my mother about this child. No other information. 910 Federal Census, NE, shows that Jennie C. VAN AVERY was the mother of 4 children, 2 of whom were then living. This shows that this child had died. She is not shown in the 1900 census. Information in files of Osie Daniels Van Avery show that this child was the 2nd child, and was born and died in Chicago, Cook Co., IL. However, the fiche showing births and deaths in Chicago, IL, shows only her birth. There was another child by the name of George Van Avery who died in Chicago, IL. This will have to be checked out. So far no death date or place has been found, 1998.
+98 iii. James Charles Henry VAN AVERY.
+99 iv. Marguerite Margaret Louise VAN AVERY.

His residence is not shown. 1900 Federal Census, Douglas Co., Omaha, shows him as a lodger in the home of Georg N. SWEETLAND, 1008 So. 29th, Omaha. He was married to Osie Foye DANIELS on Apr 8 1923 in Omaha, Douglas, NE. Osie Foye DANIELS was born on Apr 27 1900 in Jacksonville, Morgan, IL. She died on Sep 22 1996 in Omaha, Douglas, NE. She has reference number 3. Personal knowledge of Joyce English VAN AVERY, her daughter. Birth certificate, marriage certificate. Osie graduated in 1919 from Council Bluffs High School, later called Thomas Jefferson High School. She attended the teachers' college at Kearney, then called Nebraska Normal School (I think). He father did not want her to become a teacher. So, after one year, she enrolled in Kansas State College, Manhattan, Kansas. She had been raised Christian Scientist, and had a great fear of doctors. When she visited relatives in Wichita that fall, she had a goiter. Her relatives were alarmed and insisted that she see a doctor. Osie was sure that the doctor would slit her throat, and was much relieved when he only prescribed iodine. She left the Christian Science Church then, never to return. She is shown in the 1920 census as living in Arthur Co., Nebraska, with her father and mother. Several years after that she lived in Omaha, working for an eye doctor, Dr. MAXWELL. She then worked as the chief accountant at the home office of the Omaha Life Insurance Co. She worked for about five years after her marriage to James VAN AVERY. After that she stayed home, being a housewife and mother to her only child. Osie was active in genealogical organizations, including DAR, Colonial Dames of the 17th Century, DAC, etc. She traveled to various places to do research, including Wichita, Kansas; Nevada, Missouri; and other places. In about 1986, she sold her home at 2311 North 53rd St. in Omaha, where she had lived for more than 40 years. Osie died at Clarkson Hospital on Sunday 22 Sept. 1996, about 3:30 p. m.
