OCCUPATION: Learned to black smithing & plow making business
RESIDED: 1859 moved to West Point MO, where he set up a wagon & plow making business with his brother, Joseph. Just before the Civil War, they went south to dispose of their surplus stock & Quantrell' bunch burned their shops and all their finished goods, which was a great loss to them.
RESIDED: 1861 he went to Leavenworth, where his brother George was located. They went across the plains with a government supply train, going as far as Ft Laramie WY. Returning to Leavenworth, he decided that was all he wanted of that kind of experience.
MILIARY: 1862 Aug enlisted as a pvt in Co E 79th Reg IL Vol Inf & served until June 1865. After the war he returned to IL until the following spring.
RESIDED: 1866 moved to Paola Miami Co KS
OCCUPATION: 1866 Apr 1 began grocery business in Paola in partnership with G S ANDERSON. In 1877 they dissolved partnership, and William continued alone.
TRAVEL: 1884 visited his brother George in Umatilla Co OR.
