For months the preparations for this history have been going forward, a number of people being engaged in the work, gathering biographies of people in seven important counties comprising North Central Ohio, people who have contributed to the advancement of the communities in which they live and the influence of a considerable number of them has gone out—and is still going out—to state and nation, yes, and to foreign lands. Someone has said—Carlyle, wasn't it?—that "history is the essence of innumerable biographies" and the measure of their influence cannot be adequately estimated until their earthly careers have been finished and the lives of the people they have influenced. And even not then can that influence be measured any more than can be measured the influence of all the myriads of the past who have followed noble ideals, have labored persistently, and unselfishly for the advancement of the community in which they have lived and have put inspiration into other lives for "the common deeds of the common day are ringing bells in the Far Away" and the far reaching possibilities of the single deeds of a single day, much less of the service of a lifetime, are not often realized. For many months this editor has been delving in the past, gathering data from every section of the seven counties of North Central Ohio from county histories, biographies, reminiscences, seeking not only interesting and important facts regarding men and women of the past but the influence of their lives on posterity, how they met and grappled with emergencies of their rapidly changing civilization just as we of today have to meet our intricate problems. From data gathered by the writer during more than thirty-two years of newspaper work in North Central Ohio, from reminiscences of great numbers of people long since passed away, from recollections of their personalities and achievements ; from experiences of people of today, materials for this history have been secured. To scores of people for valuable assistance and encouragement his gratitude is due. This history is written not alone for the present generation but for readers still unborn. In the silent watches of the night he has thought of what he should say that might influence them to a deeper appreciation of their heritage from the earliest settlement of this section of Ohio and their responsibilities to generations coming. It has seemed to - v - him as if he were speaking to audiences in the far distant future for he has found that histories such as those by Horace S. Knapp and Dr. George W. Hill in Ashland County ; by Ben Douglass in Wayne County ; A. A. Graham in Richland County and A. Banning Norton in Knox County, histories written fifty, sixty and even seventy years ago, have been bound and rebound and in these days when greater emphasis is being given to community and county history, are used more than ever before by pupils in the public schools, study clubs and people of other organizations. Realizing this, appreciating not only his responsibility but his glorious opportunity, he has put forth every effort to do in his day and generation what they did in theirs. It is impossible of course to chronicle in this history everything worthy of perpetuation in a century and a quarter of North Central Ohio history. Millions of people in these seven counties, as in all the other counties, have lived and wrought since the days of the early settlements and every day contribution to history is being made by the nearly 342,000 people now living in this important area of 3420 square miles with its hundreds of communities and neighborhoods. But some of the most important facts of North Central Ohio history have been presented together with interesting incidents typical of many communities and illustrating the life of the people in the period in which they lived. Particular attention has been given to the octogenarians and nonagenarians, the patriotic spirit of the North Central Ohioans in all the wars of the nation and the activities of peace, the work of churches, schools, colleges, the advancement of this part of Ohio commercially, and along industrial lines. Careful attention has been given to service organizations in the various communities and the achievements of young people in their various organizations such as the Boy Scouts, Girl Reserves, 4-H Clubs and other agencies for enthusiastic work along such beneficial lines.
