PREFATORY NOTE
IN placing this volume in the hands of our patrons, we feel confident we have executed an undertaking which will be appreciated, not only now, by them, but in time, by their children and their children's children, who shall follow them. The task of gathering, writing, and compiling the data for this history has been conscientiously executed, and though we cannot well expect the book will prove to be free from every inaccuracy, yet we confidently believe the mistakes, whether they he of typography or of statement of fact, will be found, upon investigation, to be trivial in kind, and that the book can be relied upon as an authentic and detailed history of the counties of which it treats. The patronage we have received has been greatly inadequate to the scope and character of a work of this kind and the expense attending its publication; yet we have not for this reason, or for any reason, shrunk front executing that which we set out to do, faithfully and honestly. We believe our book will bear thorough investigation and candid criticism. He who gives it but a hasty and casual examination, or believes himself or his family to have been slighted, will be the one, if any, who will prove to be the faultfinder. Let him who undertakes to criticise first ask himself if he could, under like restrictions, have produced a better history, and, when he has examined the book thoroughly, we shall be pleased to know his verdict. We are far from claiming it to be faultless, but, nevertheless, believe it to he a reliable history of Ross and Highland counties; and we are very sure we have fulfilled all pledges we made At the outset.
