MEMOIRS OF LUCAS COUNTY AND THE CITY OF TOLEDO FROM THE EARLIEST HISTORICAL TIMES DOWN TO THE PRESENT, INCLUDING A GENEALOGICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD 0F REPRESENTATIVE FAMILIES HARVEY SCRIBNER EDITOR-IN-CHIEF ILLUSTRATED Volume I MADISON, WISCONSIN WESTERN HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION 1910 PREFACE It has been the aim in the preparation of these volumes to give a faithful account of the early settlements in Lucas county, to note the progress that attended the noble efforts of the pioneer citizens and their worthy descendants, and also to make the reader acquainted, by biographical mention, with many of those to whom we of the present day are indebted in no small measure for the excellent advantages we enjoy. Records of pioneer times are interesting, and they are not without their lessons of instruction. In Toledo and Lucas county only a very few of the early settlers are now living, and those who still survive are the lingering bonds between us and by gone days, transmitting the traditions of early times to the inquiring minds of the present generation. The pioneer fathers laid a foundation upon which they and their successors have erected a magnificent structure ; the marts of trade and traffic and the workshops of the artisans are thronged ; the press is established, whence floods of light may emanate for the instruction and benefit of all ; electricity and gas now illumine the Clark places. where once the torch and the tallow candle were the only lighting agencies ; railroads have been built which bring the products of every clime and the people from afar to the confines of Lucas county, and the telegraph and the telephone, "upon the lightning's wing," carry messages far and near. As some one has said, "Let the records of the pioneers be preserved ; in after years our children and our children's children will look over them with pleasure and profit."
In issuing the "Memoirs of Lucas County and the City of Toledo," the publishers take the preface as a means of acknowledging obligation to many who have so cordially co-operated in their preparation. Whatever of excellence is attained by these volumes may be attributed primarily to Harvey Scribner, whose intelligent direction and courteous suggestions have been unfailing. He has

personally prepared the chapter on the "Bench and Bar," and that department of the work will be of inestimable value to the members of the legal profession and also to laymen, as Mr. Scribner has given to this chapter much thought and research. C. Locke Curtis, who has edited the chapter on "The Press of the County," is a highly esteemed resident of Toledo and has devoted much of his time to journalistic work. Rollin H. Scribner, the genial treasurer of The Security Savings Bank & Trust Company. has revised and edited the chapter on "Banking and Finance," and he gave the work the same careful and intelligent consideration that characterizes his efforts in all matters claiming his attention. The chapter entitled "Agriculture and Allied Interests" has been edited by Henry J. Philipps, Jr., than whom there is none more competent, and he has given to this chapter much thought and research. Gen. Isaac R. Sherwood, than whom no braver soldier responded to his country's call in the "days that tried men's souls," has carefully revised and edited the chapter on "Military History," and last, but by no means least, the chapter on "Industries" has been under the supervision of Edwin C. Law.
Acknowledgments are also due to Willis F. Sewall, librarian of the public library, and his efficient assistants, for their unfailing courtesy ; and to many others are we indebted for numerous acts of kindness.
That the "Memoirs of Lucas County and the City of Toledo.' may prove satisfactory to our patrons is the hope of
