PREFATORY NOTE.

In placing this History of Washington County before their patrons, the publishers feel that they have faithfully fulfilled all pledges made at the outset, and that their work will stand the tests of candid criticism.

That a volume containing, as does this, upwards of seven hundred royal quarto pages of printed matter—considerably more than three-quarters of a million words presenting at least ten thousand facts and twice ten thousand names—should be absolutely free from error, no thinking person will expect; and while we do not claim unerring accuracy, we are confident, such has been the conscientious care of our corps of writers and gatherers of facts, that the work we now place before the public does not contain any serious errors of statement, and that the sins of omission are not numerous or great. No pains have been spared to make the history at once comprehensive and correct. The task which confronted the writers when they began the preparation of the History of Washington County was one of arduous responsibility, but having entered upon it we believe that they have labored zealously and judiciously, and the publishers have no hesitancy in resting the result of their labors with the public.

The general history of Washington county, and the history of Marietta were principally prepared by Mr. Alfred Mathews. The history of the origin and doings of the Ohio Land company, and the events which were of chief importance to those who effected the initial settlement at Marietta are vividly narrated by Mr. Mathews. It far surpasses any other narrative extant of the same facts, both as to detail and interesting manner of statement.

Chief among the assistants were Mr. Benjamin S. Grosscup and Clarence G. Reynolds, among whose productions we may mention respectively the chapters devoted to Waterford and Belpre. The Military History, as is elsewhere indicated, is the work of S. J. Hathaway, esq., of Marietta. The History of the Washington

County Bar was written by R. E. Harte, esq. An inter esting chapter appears accredited to. Anselm T. Nye, and a large portion of another, of especial value, is from the pen of William P. Cutler. Miss Mary Cone contributed the biography of General Rufus Putnam. The history of Marietta college was furnished by President Andrews. Other residents of the city of Marietta and Washington county have contributed to various departments and credit is given them, individually, in connection with their work.

The fact that the writers in our employ have availed themselves of every opportunity for research in the original authorities and sources of information, will be patent to every reader. The many valuable manuscripts which have been preserved and gathered into the college library, and others in private possession were generously proffered for their use, and have been advantageously consulted. A large amount of historical lore has been gathered, little by little, through personal interviews with the few living repositories' of old-time memories. With a solitary exception, the people of Marietta and of Washington county have been courteous and cordial in extending to our corps of writers whatever aid was in their power. Of this class, and among those whose position has enabled them to be of especial service, we may mention the Hon. William P. Cutler, Anselm T. Nye, esq., Miss Mary C. Nye, Miss Julia Cutler, Mrs. Sarah Cutler Dawes, Mrs. Dr. Z. D. Walter, President I. W. Andrews, R. M. Stimson, esq., William F. Curtis, Captain C. M. Cole, Hon. Harlow Chapin, Miss Mary Monette, George T. Hovey and Beman Gates, of Marietta; Colonel John Stone and Captain George Dana, of Belpre; Dr. Joseph M. McElHinney, of Newport; E. S. McIntosh, General H. F. Devol and Stephen Powers, of Waterford. To these, to the members of the press, the pastors of the several churches and the obliging county officials, and to hundreds of others, in behalf of the writers engaged on this volume we return most cordial thanks.
